As with all the pros and cons of each of those transmissions - the one people should choose is the one which fits the most their needs, driving style and location they drive in. I live in Switzerland and as an Alpine country it has a LOT of hilly bending roads. Actually I spent around 70-80% of my driving time on such roads. Previously I had Mazda CX-5 with classic Automatic Transmission. I loved that car for its responsiveness and the fact that such a compact AWD car was pulling me out of deep snow every time I needed (thanks to 21cm of ground clearance and good AWD). At the same time its "choppy" automatic transmission was driving me crazy so often on those hilly windy roads that I used MT most of the time - which I loved, as it gave me always a feeling that i have control over car which, as you can imagine is super important on "serpentines". Then we bought a car with DCT (DSG) and boy it made such a huge difference! No more chopping while changing the gears, it always knows when to increase or decrease them. The comfort of driving with DCT in such places is incomparable (I drove cars with CVT too). But I do realise that risk of something getting wrong with this type of transmission is much higher due to its complexity... Oh well... that's the risk we have to take to drive far more comfortably and that's why I always ask for additional checks of my transmission every year.
Wonderful finally explained well.. im into fuel efficient cars since i live in a traffic country... Got a city CVT. YEAH And i notice it is really fuel efficient unlike my other automatic cars.
Additional pointer, DCTs are not smooth at a lower speed such as congested city speed/car park etc. They tend to roll back as they lack vehicle creep function like the traditional autos with a torque converter. DCT I feel are more suited for endless highways but not city drive.
I have a toyota vitz CVT 1000cc. Eventhough car weigh over 970kg It delivers 12.5kmpl in traffic and 20+ kmpl in Highways! Yes Acceleration is slow and rubber band effect hurts at times but in overall Its a great reliable car
I'd pick AMT. But I never heard of seen them in the US at all and think they might never come here to be honest. But thank you for the informative video.
I am using torque converter, the only issue with AT is a bit more fuel conception than others. I love the smooth gear shift and heaviness when you give more gas. However, I cannot drive a CVT without paddle shift as it gives me the rubber band effect, DCT on the other hand kills me with the performance and its sportiness but it is costly in terms of price of the vehicle and maintenance.
Have owned dct, cvt and traditional tc auto. On congested roads, dct will make you pull your hair out though, its wonderful on uncongested highways. Cvt is okay for your day-to-day errand run but not suitable, if you're in a hurry or are someone who enjoys a little enthusiastic driving. In my view, tc auto is the way to go in any type of traffic situation or drive style. It does consume a tad more fuel but its so so much worth driving this all rounder transmission.
DCG is the smoothest for sure but beware, if they go bad then either it’s curtains for your car or a very very hefty repair cost. A piece of advice will be stay away from VW DSG‘s. They are notorious for getting damaged without any prior warning. Rest, everyone has his own personal opinions. Anyways, a very informative video.

Cvt- fuel and smooth Auto- for social norms Manual- to feel engaged with the car Dct- for fuel efficiency and for performance. (Basically a manual 2.0)
DCT is lighter than AT in term of weight and also compact means it saves more space in engine bay. The cost of manufacturing is not as expensive as AT with same number of gears (6AT is expensive than 6DCT). The downside of DCT is the freaking high maintenance cost. The gearbox is robust but the clutch pack is wear and tear item which designed to last about 250k km. When the clutch slipped it need a replacement. Cost is about USD 600-1000. AMT is the least applied by car manufacturer as it is the least comfort while shifting and cost is slightly cheaper than DCT. DCT is considered 2 sets of AMT (same machinism) in 1 box which overcome the shifting smoothiness problem meanwhile provides greater fuel efficient and faster gearshift than AMT. Among AT, CVT, AMT and DCT the best gearbox is AT as it is extremely reliable and smooth. DCT comes second as it is fastest shifting and most fuel efficient but high maintenance and less reliable. Third place is CVT, a gearbox designed for ultimate smooth riding, very fuel efficient and least components applied but accelerating is horrible. AMT is last place, it is cheap for manufacturing, compact size but it is least comfort and most car manufacturers move on to add a set of gear to become DCT. With exist of DCT it almost have no reason for AMT to stay on.
I love the CVT on the Lancer Ralliart, it handles track days with no issue, just be on top of your maintenance at all times(Plus installing a reputable aftermarket intercooler will help prevent overheating).
Dct transmissions tend to get in alot of problems in time and fixing them means emptying your bank a/c. Cvt is best in my opinion never felt slow in acceleration maybe depends on different vehicle models or makers.
New high tech torque converter systems from Aisin (toyota) and Mazda are quite fuel efficient. And considering the inherent problem free nature and smoothness of this approach I think the classical autos are currently the best choice. Apart from the electric vehicles of course.. "No transmission" is the actually the best choice.
Modern torque converter automatics almost always come with lockup clutches which locks the 2 parts of the torque converter together to prevent power loss. It only opens during gear changes making torque converters just as or even more efficient than manuals due to keeping the car in the optimal gear.
@Tony King I drive 99% in City Conditions in Delhi NCR , so big relief for me. Getting an average of 13.5 kmpl in moderate City Conditions with A/C On.

I don't want a computer to shift gears in my driving. Standard Manual Transmission is always the best. It is cheap, reliable, fuel efficient and easy to repair.
Conventional automatic transmission have gone a long way from previous makes. Sure its "less efficient" but the fuel consumption numbers compared to manual transmission has gotten closer and closer with each advancement made. Moreover, AT are more practical than MT nowadays and manufacturers are focusing their R&D more towards automatic transmission.

DCT and CVT are notoriously problematic...they are not robust enough and are costly to repair. If you want reliability then traditional torque converter automatics are the best. The problem is many car producers no longer offer them.
The summary did not mention the conventional AT. It’s reliability makes it the lower standard cost option over the life of the vehicle. Modern ATs with 6, 8, or even 10 speeds and torque converter lockup can equal or exceed the fuel economy of manuals, AMTs, and CVTs.
I'm not very happy with the choices that are available in cars nowadays. I don't find the options presented in this video appealing at all. There's nothing else to choose from. Guess I just stick with my automatic with low mileage for now.

Have an AGS(ATM) Suzuki. It had an expensive repair after just 16,000km. When it works, it is very good. Fortunately it was within warranty. Is this a fluke? Is CVT better? Or perhaps back to old style Manual transmission?!
AM it’s because you’re not suppose to inch forward in stop and go traffic with a dct. You have to essentially drive it like a manual with no clutch pedal. So as you go to inch forward the clutch can’t fully engage the 1st gear which leads to clutch slip which can destroy your transmission.

If you get a car with a regular AT and program the PCM/ECM to lock up the torque converter clutch as soon as the car shifts into 2nd gear fuel economy will be much better.
@@Automowheels Well I am a tech savvy person for my part and would like to see a video about 4 wheel drive and All wheel drive vehicles and related jargon like differentials, etc.
I have one query about CVT transmission, During halt of the car at Red signal, do need to change to P mode from D mode and apply hand brake till we are at halt or We need to only press the hand brake at Red signal, without changing any mode(i.e.D to continue). What is ideal option for CVT engine to last MORE.
I own honda. If its a small halt, press break while in D mode. If it's long halt, put it to Neutral, N. P mode is for parking only, even doors gets unlocked by default in my car at P mode.
Soon DCT getting more common and the complexity of it lessens gradually due to more advanced technology in the future. Thus it will become more economical to maintain.
DCT is the future but the design must be improved further. The DCT cars break more often and fixing them cost a fortune but performance wise, they are the best.
In DCT, there is something called as dry DCT...like in Venue or Seltos, whereas engine heating problem in heavy slow moving traffic is seen frequently. Can you comment on that please ?
yes, but it´s not a problem anymore, cars in Europe is mostly Dry DCT( cheaper end of the cars like hyundai i30 1.4 turbo and skoda aswall as VW) and there are almost no maintinance on them through the 10 years we have the cars..
I agree, but weather conditions in India is different. We are a Hot country, hence already facing heating problems in Hyundai Venue as well as Kia Seltos.
Nice presentation but in the end you don't recommend the classic automatic gearbox for any condition. In my opinion it's the best all-around option. It has the most advantages (smooth, reliable) and with the latest technology advances almost none of its former disadvantages. It's much quicker now and with good fuel efficiency. Sure, it's not as fast as dual clutch but it's still fast. Not to mention that dual clutch are quite unreliable and very expensive to fix if something goes wrong. Personally I'd choose classic automatic for all scenarios unless I wanted top performance. In such case it would mean that I could afford a very expensive car in the first place so I wouldn't mind for high maintenance costs of the gearbox (or any part of the car).
All of the above i have a BMW with ZF8hp auto which is reguarded as 1 of the best gear boxes ie fast manual change , smooth auto and good fuel efficiency over a manual.
The problem with some modern planetary transmissions are mechatronics, needing a TCM reflash for changing a solenoid, it's just too much for me. CVT : no thanks, knowing Nissan (and other brands) history is enough for me. DCT and AMT transmissions are close related in control principles, nevertheless I prefer AMT because the mechanic systems are so simple (like manual transmissions) and AMTs have been used in heavy trucks since some years ago. Well, but honestly, I will choose an AMT only in heavy trucks with a lot of speeds, because in all light cars and trucks, definitely my choice are manual transmissions. Most of the fatigue driving a manual is because the clutch, but when clutch is soft is ok for me, ooh, and a high first gear ratio is really helpful, because you can crawl in traffic jams.
Can someone tell from all of these which one is like a scooter, like there isnt any clutch and you dont neend to shift any gear at all just power start accelration and brakes

Crazy what a sporty car is in India vs North America !
Good video sir about different mechanisms.... Got some knowledge about from u r video.. Thank you sir
Most welcome! 🙏🏻
Thank you. Great info explained in one place.
Happy to help!
CVT's for daily driver and DCT's for sports cars 👌🏼
Great video which explains the types of automatic gear box. DO IT IN HINDI ALSO
I always go for only manual
MT (Manual transmission ) is all time best with our own control and the best savings of fuel consumption
Bmw zf8 is more economical than the manual version
If you get a car with a regular AT and program the PCM/ECM to lock up the torque converter clutch as soon as the car shifts into 2nd gear fuel economy will be much better.
Great video Brother keet up the good work❤
Thank you! :)
Keep.your self motivated❤
Thanks for the useful, to the point info which is easy to understand for the not so tech savvy fellows as well.
Thank you :)
@@Automowheels Well I am a tech savvy person for my part and would like to see a video about 4 wheel drive and All wheel drive vehicles and related jargon like differentials, etc.
Excellent - simple and clear!
I have one query about CVT transmission,
During halt of the car at Red signal, do need to change to P mode from D mode and apply hand brake till we are at halt or
We need to only press the hand brake at Red signal, without changing any mode(i.e.D to continue).
What is ideal option for CVT engine to last MORE.
I own honda. If its a small halt, press break while in D mode. If it's long halt, put it to Neutral, N.
P mode is for parking only, even doors gets unlocked by default in my car at P mode.
Thanks for your reply
Soon DCT getting more common and the complexity of it lessens gradually due to more advanced technology in the future. Thus it will become more economical to maintain.
I own DCT
DCT is the future but the design must be improved further. The DCT cars break more often and fixing them cost a fortune but performance wise, they are the best.
Very expensive to replace the clutches as main dealer only due to need for specialist equipment.
I prefer direct shift cvt

Exquisite explanation, You don't do it any better than that!
This is very useful information 👏👏👏
I am choosing DCT model
What about iMT. Is it reliable in terms of mileage and maintenance cost.
I choose cvt
4k to replace
Tata Altroz with DCA is a good option. Just it's average is a bit matter of concern
WET DCT is DSG. It has an oil cooled DCT. There are many variants of DCT which are dry and they do suffer from friction and heating based damages.
@@robertebob3596 ZF8HP is such a transmission. You can literally go 200 km/h and have your car be quiet, or accelerate quickly on gears 1-6

Durability and reliability for Common AT
Can someone tell from all of these which one is like a scooter, like there isnt any clutch and you dont neend to shift any gear at all just power start accelration and brakes
CVT
@@KeygaLP i found put that AMT is the best, when you put it on D it goes automatic and when you put on M it goes Manual so its both automatic and manual
