Great video, thank you for posting. It’s been many years since I have visited Toton and what amazed me in your video was the lack of 08’s, when I was there I managed to see about a dozen, how the times have changed .
I adore Toton, cant wait to visit it again, first time I have seen a steamer! So much to see, could stand there all day long and not be bored! Awesome footage from you Kev, love your Toton jaunts, and the background sounds of Redsheds happily ticking over! Thanks for sharing, regards Nick.
What a video, brings back happy memories of my youth. Surely someone should be held responsible for such a large amount of loco's parked like that just rotting away. There must be about 6 or 7 Million sitting there and they wonder why the railways are losing money. They should be sold to preservationists or underdeveloped countries .
Sad to see all those locos just idle, but the problem is their owner DB Cargo is loosing contracts left, right and centre so unless DB intend on selling them, they wont be moving for a long time yet.
Disgraceful neglect of perfectly good locos. DB are to blame. Why does a German state owned railway company operate over the British Network when we were forced to privatise British Rail by EU rules ? DB as it is now is supposedly a private company but its sole shareholder is the German state. They gained lots of motive power and rolling stock for peanuts and simply let it rot. Why not transfer these locos to areas that could use them or, bare minimum, keep them in a state where they could be brought back into service if needed. The whole railway setup here is not fit for purpose. Brexit should mean that foreign state companies like DB should be forced out and British firms given the franchise instead. All that said, thanks for the video. Atleast this is one area that still exists and hasn't been lifted and built on.
@MirVids: Liberalisation of many branches of business was a British (Thatcherite) contribution to the EU! It did hurt many people and it did destroy quite some assets, but it provided transparency of public spending - and that spending may have become more adequate. The aim is a level playing field. DB was due to be privatised, and in the run-up they neglected their public duties in Germany trying to become profitable and attractive to shareholders. Now they're trying to reduce their many billions (of euros) of debt by preparing to float their British public transport subsidiary Arriva (that is quite successful in attracting passengers in secondary lines here in the Netherlands) and by trying to sell off their loss-leaving cargo division (that may well include former EWS and Toton). DB has a division for managing surplus rolling stock. There must be a yard full of motive power near Leipzig, looking sad like Toton. Many diesel locomotives aren't needed anymore anyway: the shunters due to the change to container shuttles and bulk, the main-line locos due to the influx of multi-systems electric ones (like the Traxx family by Bombardier, the Vectron family by Siemens, and rising star Stadler). These are powerful enough to haul heavy cargo trains amidst busy passenger traffic, crossing from Rotterdam (NL) to Genua (I) if needed. (Look at the cab view videos here on RUclips of the heavy goods trains speeding up and down the Brenner Pass.) Here in the Netherlands, many good and young electric locomotives (NS series 1700) are being scrapped due to the transition to EMUs. No buyer found. Hardly any loco-hauled passenger trains have remained here, even the international ones are due to be phased out in some three years. Funny note aside: at Arnhem Centraal (NL) the Dutch trains of DB subsidiary Arriva meet the German trains of NS subsidiary Abellio (yes, the company that makes a loss in Scotland).
The railways were sold off under the railways act 1993 by John Major, the EU did not force the sale, no need for false claims unless you have proof, as Brexit is getting done, as for foreign ownership only this week Boris sold of Cobham a major British defence company to an American Equity company, so much for taking back control, when hand it over the pond.
It's not false claims. The act you mention was created to accommodate legislation by the EU. Check out EU directive 91/440. Obviously its a heavy read but this wiki gives a breakdown. www.thefullwiki.org/EU_Directive_91/440 There might well have been better ways to achieve it but that's history now. What we ended up with is a mish-mash of fake independent railway companies being payed millions in subsidies to operate over the network. The freight we see is also subsidised to the hilt. Had we retained a state owned network and given it the same resources the new system gets, it would have been a far better service. I used to travel extensively in the late 70s and 80s. Yes, there were bad areas but there were also very good areas too. The BREL side of the network was an extremely capable business. Now we import all our motive power instead. Crazy. There have even been continued imports of locomotives while capacity sat idle. Also crazy. I make all these points, not to bash the EU or side with Brexit but to highlight the state of our railways and why I believe they have reached that state. I can't comment on the sale of "Cobham", I know nothing about it but I am against the sale of any important national asset or utility. I'm not a fan of what Boris seems to be aiming for. It's certainly not a clean break but a load of compromise and false claims.
Those dying class 60s. So sad makes you want to cry. Let's hope they make it to preservation! Or even better revenue earning duties. I always saw them as my special favourites.
@James Aston I've watched Class 60s shifting limestone at Peakdale, Buxton. There were quite a number to be seen at one time until Class 66s took over. It was after this they started to disappear and be neglected.
Early Class 60s are 30 years old now and in accountancy terms probably fully depreciated. It's probably difficult to get spares for them as well and they don't have dedicated maintenance arrangements like the new fleets have. Whilst it may be sad there's probably no enthusiasm or financial case to restore them to service.
Didn't know much about the Class 60 until these days. It's sad to see such a big locos out of service at its age. There were any kind of upgrade while in service?
With the rate of decline In the UK It probably won't be long now before Toton goes the same way as Tinsley and closes. Give It 15 years and this will be a housing estate.
They keeping all the 60`s there until the 66`s break down enough so that they reinstate the 60`s again...good thing is they aint gone to scrap heaps...a lot of the 60`s are being refurbished. in my opinion a 60 looks far better than any 66...and they are just as tough and powerful... one other point...a lot of our old stock goes to live on abroad...
All those decrying the 60s....simple economics...EWS leases a truck load of 66s they had to pay for each month, when they lost business guess what they stored ? The ones that cost them nothing to have ...
I find it incredible how the railways waste their resources and money not using their rail stock to the right life cycle. If they maintained them correctly they should easily reach 20-30 yrs. very wasteful but that’s the world we live in today folks
That's what I was just thinking, they are only about 30 years old, considering HST's and class 37s are still working up and down the rail network. Sad times, I'm not particularly interested in the American/Canadian built locos.
Not all 37s still operate, comparative to the number built in fact very few still run. The 60s are the same in a way, quite a few still in operation but also a lot just left to rot in storage and some being scrapped soon. It's still very sad!
@@ILikeTransport Yeah sad times indeed, but I suppose we have to move with the times, but when I think, if I had millions I would have my own rail company I would run Scotrail Push-pull services from Glasgow - Edinburgh, Have HST's run up and down east and west coast main lines with original blue/ Gray and intercity swallow liveries with valeta engine, Class 60's and 58s on freight duties..Oh the list is endless.

looks like barry at the end of steam
Does much happen here or is it a mainly inactive freight yard?
I remember my first glimpse of Toton with scrap 20s, now it's 60s and 66s..I feel old
We use to work 45 16ton mineral wagons plus brake van into Toton from shirebrook, Then return with 60 empties those were the days mid seventies.
Tony Robinson sadly it's not just a reflection of Toton it's a reflection of the country as a whole.

Great video, but it's sad the state of the british rail freight industry with even rows off 66s and 67s sitting idle beside the redundant class 60s.
I always like depot videos👍👍👍
Is that steam loco looking at the rusty relics in the yard thinking 'that could've been me?'
And the diesel locos are all looking at the passing steam loco saying ' please take me with you!'
Brian 😂😂🙈
If they held an open day they could make so much money
the stock behind the kettle is lovely and especially the 47 beast at the back...shame about the TT green "livery" though lol

Fantastic video! so sad to see so many 60s in storage, left to rot/not in use. Are there any plans to revive any of the non-DB Red ones?
Another great video rather spoilt by the constant wind noise, please buy a windsock for your mic!
Will be a lot more in the line as freight traffic declines. Very sad . 60's over a million quid each
The last time I was there all you could hear was Class 20's.
