15 Skin Conditions CAUSED by Hashimoto's

  • There is a big connection between your skin and thyroid diseases like Hashimoto's thyroiditis.
Your skin can be considered an outward manifestation of your inward health. In other words, if there is a problem with your skin it usually indicates some problem inside of your body!
For many patients with Hashimoto's, this usually means something is wrong with their thyroid but it can also be their immune system.
Here are 15 skin conditions associated with Hashimoto's either directly caused by low thyroid function, immune dysfunction, or indirectly related to the thyroid:
#1. Dry skin - seen in up to 65% of thyroid patients. Also known as xerosis.
#2. Thickening of the skin. Also referred to as hyperkeratosis.
#3. Hives, also referred to as urticaria, seen in 6% of patients with Hashimoto's.
#4. Large or thickened tongue. More rare than other conditions but does occur.
#5. Acne. Hashimoto's can either cause deep cystic acne or hormonal related acne on the jawline.
#6. Hair loss. This occurs in up to 70% of patients with Hashimoto's and is usually diffuse over the entire scalp.
#7. Eyebrow hair loss. Different from diffuse hair loss, this type of hair loss occurs on the outer 1/3 of the eyebrow.
#8. Pale or blue colored skin in the extremities. Usually caused by decreased blood flow.
#9. Facial swelling, especially around the eyes.
#10. Dermatitis herpetiformis. Not caused directly by the thyroid but instead a manifestation of Celiac disease.
#11. Vitiligo. Another autoimmune disease seen in up to 6% of patients with Hashimoto's.
#12. Weak or atrophied fingernails. Usually caused by nutrient deficiencies.
#13. Decreased propensity to sweat. Caused by decreased thyroid function. This can impair detoxification efforts!
#14. Fungal infections of the skin. Usually found in the folds of the skin.
#15. Psoriasis. This isn't caused by the thyroid but can be associated with it.

I’m a 27 year old female. Hives is how I got diagnosed with hashimotos last year. I started breaking out in seriously chronic hives almost 2 years ago for 6-8 months until I had proper testing done. Literally covered in hives that got the worst at night. I would wake up with a swollen mouth, hives around my eyes, etc. I was constantly loading up on Benadryl and Zyrtec. I finally had a full thyroid panel done and found my TPO antibodies were 490 when they should be under 9. Going gluten free/dairy free, cutting out foods I tested sensitive to, and getting on proper supplements made my hives go away.

I have Hives only at nite started this last February and yes my TPO is high. I have been taking natural Thyroid. What supplements did you get on? I am on quite a few and some are anti inflammatory. Been off and on taking Lymphatic drops to help with the Lymphatic system knowing this is also called Chronic Lymphocytic Thyroiditis. I am 62yr old female.

@@beckiwildeman600 I would also recommend doing a ultrasound of your thyroid to see if there are any nodules or damage to the thyroid. If not, there’s no reason to take thyroid medication. My hives would also flare up only at night and fade fully by noon the next day. They would start again every evening. My TPO was high, but my thyroid was fine. So I started on an EPA/DHA supplement, digestive enzymes, gluten/dairy digest in case I consumed those things, and a strong probiotic. Also had to cut out gluten and dairy. It was truly the dietary changes that stopped the hives. If I eat gluten now, I will start to get hives again.
I would do research on autoimmune protocol for hashimotos.

TSH was only tested and of course normal. What do you think about Botox for people who have Hashimoto’s? I’ve got something scheduled, but I’m considering canceling. I’m afraid the closer I’m getting, albeit less so because it is performed by the surgeon. Still concerned enough that I’m having second thoughts . My looks have really gone downhill in the past few years, and was thinking the most noninvasive approach would just be to smooth out my stress lines on my forehead.

Yes - I’ve had several occurrences of Keratitis as well as Dry Eye Syndrome. It’s the immune system attacking the lining to your corneas. I’ve been seeing an eye doctor who specializes in Dry Eye and I’m now on eye drops for people who have an autoimmune disease.

I seriously have never met a woman on thyroid meds who improved. Never. Are their ANY case studies that actually show improvement? Im almost 60. None of my friends, relatives, my mother's friends, and co-workers with hypothyroidism saw improvement. It seems to be a money pit. I want confidence that the meds my doctor is insisting I go works. But I've never seen it so I'm refusing.
