I started practicing meditation on a daily basis about six months ago and I have recently come to realize that most of the people around me are often times hasty, hurried, reactive, distracted, agitated, and impatient. I used to be very much like them.

If you keep and intensify the practice you will be able to regain the perception of your own flaws. Then compassion grows. That initial phase is the most delicate to the ego, who tend to misjudge the first improvements as a change in character. But that will take years.

I know what you mean. The struggle, for me at least, is to not view myself as "above" them. I sometimes notice serious meditators can be a bit "holier-than-thou" about people that don't do it and have less control over their emotions.

I started practicing meditation because I have morning anxiety and sometimes it gets extremely hard to survive the rest of the day because of it. I really got some amazing results after a few days only.. Like throughout the day I feel full of energy and there's a sense of positivity everyday, I feel happy. Also there is one thing I noticed that earlier my head used to feel heavy as if there's some load up there but now it feels like that load is gone.... Consistency is the key to get maximum results from meditation and yoga. I'm gonna make them part of my lifestyle.

I’m 42 and just started meditating trying to keep my attention on my breath. So far I have to say it’s not hard, but not as easy as it may sound. Right now I do on average probably 10 minute sessions. My stress response in many ways is poor so I’m hoping meditation can help me manage stress and perhaps increase my stress threshold. My favorite part so far is when I slowly open my eyes and the feeling of relaxation I feel. I’m from the US and our culture as a whole doesn’t seem to value slowing down. I think we could all benefit from slowing down. In some ways I think Covid introduced the idea here because we had too slow down. It gave us time to think and value some things that we weren’t before. Just my thoughts. Peace

I'v been meditating.. on and off for almost 50 years.. My experience with meditation.. over the years is.. it never fails to surprise me.. but I have no control whatsoever on how it effects me.. I just let it happen.. Lucid dreams and visions.. Out of the body experiences.. Glimpses of the future.. Intuitive insights.. Creativity.. Wisdom.. Feeling completely intoxicated while out walking.. comparable to being on drugs. Seeing a strange pure light.. that does not originate from the sun.. but comes from somewhere deep inside me.. Levels of consciousness that I didn’t know existed.. that overwhelm me with their beauty and feelings of bliss.. etc.
This is not something that the human-race should ignore.. IT’S A HIDDEN TREASURE.. inside us all. Just like the iceberg.. there is so much more to every one of us.. than what meets the eye.. what Jung referred to as - THE UNDISCOVERED SELF .
"That which the dream shows is the shadow of such wisdom as exists in man, even if during his waking state he may know nothing about it... We do not know it because we are fooling away our time with outward and perishing things, and are asleep in regard to that which is real within ourself."

I teach mindfulness meditation online as part of a mindfulness therapy program that I offer. In essence, mindfulness meditation is learning to embrace experience directly without reducing it through labeling and judgement or prejudice. When you can fully embrace anxiety or depression in this way you create the exact conditions that promote healing and transformation, which is why it can be so effective in promoting well-being.

I absolutely love meditation, it has drastically changed my life for the better, but this is false. Life intends for us to be mindlessly striving and anticipating for the future. The two natural things are to focus on something that you are highly motivated to focus on or, alternatively, let your mind wander. Meditation is, by definition, unnatural.

is mindfulness meditation more beneficial than concentration meditation (focusing on breathing and refocusing every time your mind wanders, instead of focusing on arising thoughts)?

I think it's more a question of what kind of benefits you're looking to obtain, and then selecting the meditation according to that criteria. In fact, if you're like most people, you will probably find that you can benefit from practicing both types of meditation (i.e., *open monitoring/vipassana/inclusive*, and *focused attention/shamatha/exclusive*)

How does one not fall asleep? The guided group meditations I experienced daily for 2 months were more like a group nap time.
Solo attempts since then result the same.
Is the sitting posture the key to not falling out into dreams?
I haven't attempted it for years.
I often fall asleep without realizing I have done so until I wake up.

I used to do 10-20mins for a long time and it did nothing for me too. I'd almost given up. But 30mins+ a day is the real game changer. I personally experienced a huge difference in my anxiety, depression, mood and concentration in as little as 2-3 weeks.

Maybe what you're talking about is an experience entailing advanced stages of meditation. People usually start with sitting in silence and being mindful. As far as ordinary folks like me are concerned, this itself has yielded huge benefits in a matter of a few weeks and will suffice. Not everyone's purpose of meditation is undertaking an intense spiritual journey, right?

There is no way to start. Simply go to a quiet room. I prefer to take a sheet and fold it, place it on the floor and assume the criss-crossed legs position. Meditation isn't one of those disciplines that you have to have a structure to. Some days you can just go. But if you're a busy person, 20-30 minutes a night is sufficient. If you can put in an hour, great.
