It’s not just the fights that accumulate the damage, it’s the sparring. The mayweather gym is famous for its “gym wars” as a boxing fan this is the part I don’t like, but at the same time it’s what makes it, and the men that do it so special. They truly not only risk their lives, but quality of life as well. Ali, Hearns, Roach, Stevenson, Tony, and so many others are, or were walking breathing testaments to this.

I think the bad news was that he woke up the day after retiring realizing that boxing didn't stop for him. Time goes on, new fighters come up and make a name for themselves. For a guy like Floyd who spent the past 20 years in the limelight it must be hard to see that public interest in him is waning, he's gotta stay in the headlines somehow. The instance he was using to suggest he might be suffering from memory loss seemed like he was just passively aggressively insulting that boxer who said he sparred with him.

Even though Mayweather barely got head, he still got hit in the head and repeatedly experienced traumatic brain injury and concussions, which is common in boxing but not normal for the vast majority of the population. When a boxer gets older, there is always going to be a risk of getting dementia and Alzheimer's disease.

Geez like a fighter at his level particularly should remember who the heck he has sparred on any given moment! Imagine the sheer number of people he has sparred going back from the amateurs to the pro’s! On any given pro fight alone you may have 5 different guys in camp

Sometimes things like that are hereditary. Dementia, Alzheimer’s etc can have genetic links. The shots taken in sparring and fights over the course of decades certainly wouldn’t help either. But, my hope is that he does not endure the same condition that his grandmother, uncle, and dad went through/are going through.

I'm certainly hoping Floyd Jr. does not develop dementia but given that his uncle had it and his father is experiencing it, the odds seem to not be in his favor. I doubt Floyd would have made these comments if he didn't feel he has some symptoms with memory already. He only got seriously stunned a handful of times under the lights but he took a lot of blows to the head in fights and sparring over the years. A fighter does not need to get knocked out, it's the cumulative hard blows to the head that do the damage. Some fighters are more susceptible than others.
