I just got an hourglass dulcimer off of facebook to practice on and learn on before I go to uni next fall and hearing hymns gives me confidence to go forward with it. Obsessed with the sound these make, and excited to get my hands on it.
In the sweet by and by We shall meet on that beautiful shore In the sweet by and by Oh, we shall meet on that beautiful shore There's a land that is fairer than day And by faith we can see it a-far For the Father waits over the way To prepare us a dwelling place there In the sweet by and by We shall meet on that beautiful shore In the sweet by and by We shall meet on that beautiful shore We shall sing on that beautiful shore The melodious songs of the blessed And their spirits shall sorrow no more Not a sigh for the blessings of rest To our bountiful Father above We will offer our tribute of praise For the glorious gift of His love And the blessings that hallow our days In the sweet by and by We shall meet on that beautiful shore In the sweet by and by We shall…
I also discovered the dulcimer on RUclips and had to wait several months to get my hands on one. Good luck on your dulcimer journey. I hope you'll be playing soon.
This video just co firmed that my dulcimer will be converted to baritone. Its got plenty of size for sound, and a longer body. I just love the mellow sound of a baritone. I like both, but baritone is just smoother IMHO. Thanks for this!
Glad to hear this video inspired you to play a baritone. This instrument was built as a baritone, but I converted my Rick Probst dulcimer from a standard to a baritone and it sounds great!
Heather, in this video I am playing a baritone dulcimer made by Ron Gibson. It is tuned AEa. But you could play the same arrangement on a standard dulcimer tuned DAd. And thanks for your encouragement.
+Nicholas Rickford Pavlović-Grant Thanks for listening, Nicholas. No amp. I am recording directly into my webcam using a Zoom H4N as the audio interface.
+Dusty Turtle Thanks. I was not familiar with the Zoom H4N, so I just looked it up. So you are just using the mics on the Zoom H4N and then a line from that into your camera? Just curious because the recording is great. Not the usual string jangle dominating.
+Nicholas Rickford Pavlović-Grant That's basically it. The H4N makes great recordings, but in this case I am recording on my computer and just using the H4N as a microphone. It plugs into the computer's USB port. If you want to hear what the H4N sounds like for recording, check out some of my latest SoundCloud postings.
+Dusty Turtle Checking them out right now. I think I have to get one of those Zooms H4Ns. Great. I rather like the look and sound of that dulcimer too. :) Thanks, Dusty.
Hi Deborah. I am playing a baritone dulcimer here tuned AEa. The intervals between the strings are the same as DAd, so all the fingering is the same, but the notes are in a lower register and in the key of A instead of D. And yes, I give online lessons using Zoom. You can find me at www.rivercitydulcimers.com.
@@DustyThorburn TY so much for your kind reply. I am so bad at figuring out resulting sounds of my choices and fear an outcome I wound not be happy with..so I would like to hear something to be sure I liked it. And every instrument can sound different. My hubby was lucky enough to be able to play 3 "identical" Martins to find one that fit his voice.( I couldn't see if you had the 1 1/2 fret, but I could get that added) Let me know if you change your mind.
I'm not sure how to define a "real" chord, but I prefer to think of partial chords as the melody with some harmony added. There are plenty of great noter/drone players if that's what you're looking for. One of my favorites is birdrockdulcimers; check him out here and on SoundCloud. Oh, and by the way, I already own multiple guitars. I think I don't need any more. :-)
Are you serious? Instruments aren't limited to the style you play them. This is the most ridiculous comment I have ever heard. Not to mention, guitars are played like this too. Why are some of you noter/droner people so intimidated by musicians with real talent? It takes virtually no skill to noter/drone. Noter/drone playing is so limited and restrictive. This is way more beautiful than just the bore of strumming alone. A song needs dimension, such as this one right here. What a beautiful gift this video is Dusty. LOVE it!!

Good luck on your dulcimer journey. Hymns sound especially nice these special instruments.
That's just lovely. Need more sounds like that in this noise soaked world.
Thanks so much for your sweet comments.
Chet Hines was my father. Thank you for honoring him even if you don't know that you are. Rock on bro

Wonderful stuff! This would be great for a 4th of July playlist
Most beautiful rendition of "Battle Cry of Freedom" I think I have ever heard.
Wow, thanks for such a compliment. My rendition of that tune is based on an arrangement by Neal Hellman.
I'm not aware of this instrument's existence till now, 😍
Ah yes, I remember the first time I saw a mountain dulcimer, too. Beware! Your life may never be the same again! :-)
❤ Thank you.
and the HARMONICS TOO? Wow! You really make that thing sing, Dusty.
Thanks so much, WWW. I really appreciate your comments.
Simple beautiful I can’t wait until I get one

Very Very Nice!
Thanks so much, Brett. I appreciate your taking the time to listen and comment.

Thanks for listening and taking the time to comment.
This is really beautiful.
well, yeah! that is what I was hoping. just ordered one very similar to this from Ron this week.
It's hard to believe you did that all on 3-4 strings. Amazing!
Thanks, @craniifer. Just three strings and a diatonic fretboard.
excellent
Thanks!
Thank you, very nice
Tallon Chalmers Thanks for listening.

So pretty!
Beautiful
Thanks so much!
It sounds very good in the key of A-major.
Thanks, MtM. I like these tunes in this lower register, too.
@@DustyThorburn it brings me to my happy place.
That was amazing
Thanks. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Thank you 🙏😊
Thanks for listening and taking the time to comment. Much appreciated.
Awesome playing! Keep it up. Very inspirational.
Thanks so much!
Very nice Dusty!
Thanks, Brian. I hope you're doing well.
I loved this
Thanks so much. It's been a while; I hope I can still play these tunes!
I love the mellow sound of this dulcimer can you please tell me what type of dulcimer it is and what you have it tuned to. Thanks it's beautiful.

Loved this version...what is the tuning for the baritone please?
SORRY! Just saw AEA. I'm old please forgive me! LOL!
No problem, Nancy. You could just as easily play either of these tunes in DAd. But tuning to G or A for a baritone is pretty standard practice.
thanks dusty
No, thank YOU, Denise.
Is this being played through an amp or is it just via a mic? Nice sound, nice playing.

I can play one a little but not like that. I got mine in Mountain View Arkansas in the late 70’s. It was totally restored two years ago.
Is that a McSpadden then? I'm sure the two of you can make sweet music.
Nice dulcimer, who is maker
The dulcimer is made by Ron Gibson of Ohio.
Mr Thorburn are those DADD? Do you give lessons on RUclips?

This is far too beautiful for me.
Thanks so much.
call me a godless red but i cant hear the tune of the sweet by and by without singing the lyrics to the preacher and the slave. god bless
Looks like a real dulcimer for once.
Would you like to find that pretty thing a new home? hint hint...lol
Rebecca, Rob Gibson makes dulcimers that are just as affordable as they are beautiful. You might consider contacting him to get one of your own.

Doesn't anybody strum these things anymore? Buy a guitar if you want real chords, not partial ones.
