- Instead of a Halloween video, I think I would rather just take time to appreciate the beauty of the fall season. It’s different for me this year but the Creator’s paint brush never ceases to awe and humble, right? I find it impossible to look around me and not hear the song “How Great Thou Art”. I hope I am able to adequately express some of the reverence I feel so that I may share my wonderment with you, my friends. Wishing you a marvelous Autumn…oh yes, and a Happy Halloween too!
This is beautiful. If this were a vinyl record I would have worn it out in three days. I play baritone ukulele and chromatic harmonica by ear and recently took interest in the dulcimer. I found this searching for dulcimer music on RUclips. I've about decided to get a dulcimer. I'm 84 but if God lets me live a few more years I'll enjoy the dulcimer. I live about two hours drive from McSpadden's shop in Mountain View, Arkansas.
Awww...that is so nice! Thank you very much! 😊 How wonderful that you live close enough to try out some mountain dulcimers. You can't go wrong with a McSpadden. I am willing to bet that you will quickly master this instrument. Enjoy the journey, my new friend!
Beautiful dulcimer
Beautiful!!
I really appreciate that - thank you, Kent! 😊🎶
Chris; my husband Terry was taken to the hospital this afternoon. i just watched this again, i cannot count the times i have watched this. it is a blessing to me. wish i could play half that good. i love my new baritone ;but, it doesn't sound as good as yours. thank you again for such a beautiful version. Very lovely. I am a new dulcimer player but a relatively fearless and impatient one. I think I’ll try to learn How Great Thou Art pretty soon, and you will be the inspiration for it. Thank you.
Thank you, Dr. Shea! Welcome to the wonderful world of dulcimers! I hope you find it as fun, challenging, and captivating as a lot of us do. I am happy and humbled to be an inspiration to you on this song. 😊 I wish you much fun and satisfaction on your musical journey. 🫡🎶
Hi Christine, do you have an album of this style of music? This is some of the most beautiful music, filled with peace and beauty, that I have ever heard. It's hard to believe that you play by ear. How one, "by ear," can learn all the chords, fretboard, nuances, and blend to create such beautiful chord melodies is a "divine mystery" to me. What a gift for your own soul and that of so many others. I lost my 24-yr-old son some years ago, my mom 3 months ago, and presently illness in my immediate family greatly impacting my life and lifestyle from perhaps here on out. Listening to your music is like a warm blanket and sunshine on my heart and mind. Thank you so much, and God bless you in your own life and all your heart needs, as you extend the same to so many. I am grateful for you.
Mary, your comment moved and humbled me deeply. 😌 Thank you so much for your kind and too generous words. 💗 I am so very sorry for your immense loss of your loved ones, and for your recent life altering challenges. Please know that you are not alone and that I am sending hugs and supporting you with light & prayers. I am greatly flattered by you asking, but no, I do not have an album. If you would like, I would be more than happy to send you an MP3 audio file of this. And Mary? I am grateful for YOU as well. Your timing couldn't have been more perfect. 🤗
Wonderful and relaxing. Thank you.
It makes me happy that you enjoyed it - thank you, Jerrel! 😊🎶
This is one of my favorite hymns, I love the backdrop it is something I don't get to see living in Florida. God Bless you my friend.
Thank you, Carolyn! No, I guess you would not see much of that in Florida. But on the plus side, you don't see any snow either, so... ;-)
Beautiful, thank you for sharing!
Thanks so much, Valerie!
BEAUTIFUL THANK YOU FOR SHARING
Thanks so much, Teresa! I sure do appreciate you listening and your kind comment! 😊🎶
❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ There’s not enough hearts to show how beautiful this is Chris. Thank you!
Awww....thank you, Mandy! 💞
I sure did think about you when doing this vid! Huh...I wonder why? Lol! Happy Halloween to you and yours! 🎃 👻
Nah Chris, you are the wonder here! Soooo gooooood. Gonna put this on saved so I can listen to it a ton. That electrified sound you have there is so soothing. Happy Halloween.
Just beautiful.
Hello, Uwe - and thank you!!! :-)
So glad that I found your channel and subscribed. Very beautiful and peaceful music

Very Nice, and one of my favorite hymns. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for watching and for your kind comment! Both things are greatly appreciated. :-)
wish my dad could have heard this...wow
Thank you, Jane...I wish he could have too. I am very sorry for your loss. 😔
Won't be playin anytime shortly. But I have listen to the Angels singing.
I'm late to the party but none the less overwhelmed by this sound. Thank you for the post.
One question I did not see asked is what is the pick you are using ?
I appreciate you watching - thank you! It is a thin triangle acrylic pick by V-Picks. The Bing Ultra Lite. 🎶🙂
Chirs i adore this; i know you play by ear and from your heart. i have listened to this so many times God has blessed you with a great talent xoxo
What a wonderfully kind & generous thing to say! Thank you so much, Sheila! 😊❤️
Oh, so beautiful!!!
Thank you very much, Sharon! 😊
Always sooo good, Chris! I never know whether to just quit or admit I won’t get there.....but enjoy the journey I’m given. Thank you!
You are so kind - thank you, Don! Honestly, I feel that way a lot too. But I've come to the same conclusion as you about simply enjoying the journey. Maybe playing an instrument is a little like fishing? You never know if your efforts will bring the desired result but you do it anyway because it feels good and right, like it fills something deep inside of you. Just a thought, my friend! :-)
Christine Shoemaker Thank you!
A favorite, beautifully played. Many thanks Chris!
Hi Jack! Aww...thanks so much!!!
Very well done Chris.
this is wonderful thanks
Thank you very much, Denise! :-)
Beautifully played with so much sensitivity, Chris...and at the end I had tears in my eyes
I really appreciate your lovely comment and your understanding, Ariane! Thank you!!!
What kind of dulcimer are you using?!? Sounds amazing
It's a Folkcraft baritone.
WOW! Thanks for sharing. As a former hammered dulcimer player with a bad back I've been thinking about getting a lap dulcimer. After listening to many different oneS I think I like this one best. What make/model is it? Thanks again.
Thank you, John - for watching and for subscribing! Sorry to hear about your bad back. :-( This dulcimer is a custom baritone made by Richard and Jim Ash of Folkcraft Instruments in Woodburn, Indiana. If you let Richard know that it's the one he made for me, he might remember it due to the difficult compass inlay he did on the headstock. Fantastic work! When you talk to him, tell him I said hi!
So very beautiful 👏👏👏
Thank you so much, Ingrid! 😊
One year later; one of my very favorites. What is the beautiful water behind you?
Aww...thanks so much, Don! It is a small private no-wake lake in mid Michigan. It's very peaceful. 😌 I hear that the fishing is pretty good too. 🐟
Beatiful
Thank you, Peggy Lee!
I love your playing. 25 years ago I made a dulcimer from a kit but started to play it at Age 83. I am now playing How Great Thou Art in dad. Are you playing in cgc? Can I tune my dulcimer to baritone or would I have to have a different dulcimer? I have a friend who plays a C Harmonica - could we play a duet if I play in cgc? Also, do you have an amp and pickup? May I ask what kind? I am trying to make up for lost time. I'll never sound like you but maybe I can pretend in my own room. If you don't have time to answer, that's ok. I really want you to know how much I enjoy listening to you. Thank you so much.
Hi Betty - it makes me very happy that you like my playing. Thank you so much! I am surprised that you built a dulcimer and then waited for 25 years before playing it. Wow - I couldn't have resisted the temptation for a day, and certainly not for over a week. Haha! For this one I am playing in common baritone tuning of A-e-a. My standard, non-baritone dulcimers really can't handle being tuned that low. The action is floppy and the sound is sloppy. ;-) My baritones have heavier gauge strings with nuts and bridges slotted to accommodate that. The VSLs are a little longer and the body is about 1/4" to 1/2" deeper. You and your harmonica friend should be able to play together as you described. Myself...I adore playing with a Blues harp player! Yes...I have a pick up and prefer to play through an amp. I like the Fishman amp for my dulcimers. To my ear, they hold true to the acoustic sonic qualities. Welcome to the dulcimer club and enjoy the journey, Betty!
@@ChrisShoemaker Thanks so much for answering all my questions. After I made the kit dulcimer I devoted my time rearing 5 boys and 1 girl and encouraged them to play music. So now it's my turn. lol Thanks again for your music and your answers to my questions.
I was raving about your playing to my son and he and his wife surprised me yesterday with a baritone dulcimer. It needs strings and I wonder if you would tell me what kind of the heavier gauge strings you use. Could I still finger pick with them? Thanks.
Wow! What a thoughtful and generous gift! Congrats Betty! Each dulcimer builder has their own specs for string gauges and slot the nut and bridge accordingly. If you know who built yours you could ask their recommendation. For me, I use a .34 on the bass, .24 on the middle, and .12’s on the melody. (Yes, you can still play Fingerstyle with heavier strings but it will take a bit more strength.). McSpadden has baritone strings like these. I like their “squeak less” ones but that is just a personal preference. Either type should work just fine for you. You can order them online from mcspaddendulcimers.com - wishing you much enjoyment with your new baritone, Betty! 🙂 🎶
I love your dulcimer journey. I received a dulcimer kit 40 years ago. Like you raised a family, had a career. Now retired and starting to learn at 61.
Beautiful and inspirational. How long have you been playing and what kind of dulcimer are you playing? Thank you for sharing
Thank you so much, George! I had to really stop and think about that...turns out it's been around 7 years now. Wow! Where did all that time go? The dulcimer in this vid is a baritone made by Folkcraft Instruments in Woodburn, Indiana. I appreciate you watching, George! :-)
hi Chris what do you have this song set to?
Can you share some tabs for the music you played? Where can someone find them?
Being an ear player I do not have tab for this, George. Free tab does exist for "How Great Thou Art" - and many other songs, archived from now defunct Everything Dulcimer website. It can be found at: duclimertab.com
Thanks so much, Sea Wolf! 😊
@@ChrisShoemaker THANK YOU CHRISTINE! This has always been one of my favorite hymns, and your version....all the more beautiful
I see you already said this is a folkcraft dulcimer, can you add a little more detail to that? type of wood, vsl, etc?
Walnut and Butternut. 28" VSL
How's a baritone dulcimer tuned?
A-e-a. Thank you for watching, Wilhelm! 😊🎶
I had to see what got over 11k listens...don't know how I missed it. Just gorgeous, so warm and full. What a beautiful arrangement, and that dulcimer...well....that's a BARITONE!! This is PERFECT Chris.
Hello Janene! 👋 Thanks so much for your kind and encouraging words. I sure do appreciate that! 🥰 The baritone...oh yeah! 🎶
Beautiful dulcimer
