  • Instead of a Halloween video, I think I would rather just take time to appreciate the beauty of the fall season. It’s different for me this year but the Creator’s paint brush never ceases to awe and humble, right? I find it impossible to look around me and not hear the song “How Great Thou Art”. I hope I am able to adequately express some of the reverence I feel so that I may share my wonderment with you, my friends. Wishing you a marvelous Autumn…oh yes, and a Happy Halloween too!

    This is beautiful. If this were a vinyl record I would have worn it out in three days. I play baritone ukulele and chromatic harmonica by ear and recently took interest in the dulcimer. I found this searching for dulcimer music on RUclips. I've about decided to get a dulcimer. I'm 84 but if God lets me live a few more years I'll enjoy the dulcimer. I live about two hours drive from McSpadden's shop in Mountain View, Arkansas.

      Awww...that is so nice! Thank you very much! 😊 How wonderful that you live close enough to try out some mountain dulcimers. You can't go wrong with a McSpadden. I am willing to bet that you will quickly master this instrument. Enjoy the journey, my new friend!

    Hi Christine, do you have an album of this style of music? This is some of the most beautiful music, filled with peace and beauty, that I have ever heard. It's hard to believe that you play by ear. How one, "by ear," can learn all the chords, fretboard, nuances, and blend to create such beautiful chord melodies is a "divine mystery" to me. What a gift for your own soul and that of so many others. I lost my 24-yr-old son some years ago, my mom 3 months ago, and presently illness in my immediate family greatly impacting my life and lifestyle from perhaps here on out. Listening to your music is like a warm blanket and sunshine on my heart and mind. Thank you so much, and God bless you in your own life and all your heart needs, as you extend the same to so many. I am grateful for you.

      Mary, your comment moved and humbled me deeply. 😌 Thank you so much for your kind and too generous words. 💗 I am so very sorry for your immense loss of your loved ones, and for your recent life altering challenges. Please know that you are not alone and that I am sending hugs and supporting you with light & prayers. I am greatly flattered by you asking, but no, I do not have an album. If you would like, I would be more than happy to send you an MP3 audio file of this. And Mary? I am grateful for YOU as well. Your timing couldn't have been more perfect. 🤗

      Thank you, John - for watching and for subscribing! Sorry to hear about your bad back. :-( This dulcimer is a custom baritone made by Richard and Jim Ash of Folkcraft Instruments in Woodburn, Indiana. If you let Richard know that it's the one he made for me, he might remember it due to the difficult compass inlay he did on the headstock. Fantastic work! When you talk to him, tell him I said hi!

    I love your playing. 25 years ago I made a dulcimer from a kit but started to play it at Age 83. I am now playing How Great Thou Art in dad. Are you playing in cgc? Can I tune my dulcimer to baritone or would I have to have a different dulcimer? I have a friend who plays a C Harmonica - could we play a duet if I play in cgc? Also, do you have an amp and pickup? May I ask what kind? I am trying to make up for lost time. I'll never sound like you but maybe I can pretend in my own room. If you don't have time to answer, that's ok. I really want you to know how much I enjoy listening to you. Thank you so much.

    • @ChrisShoemaker
      @ChrisShoemaker  4 года назад +4

      Hi Betty - it makes me very happy that you like my playing. Thank you so much! I am surprised that you built a dulcimer and then waited for 25 years before playing it. Wow - I couldn't have resisted the temptation for a day, and certainly not for over a week. Haha! For this one I am playing in common baritone tuning of A-e-a. My standard, non-baritone dulcimers really can't handle being tuned that low. The action is floppy and the sound is sloppy. ;-) My baritones have heavier gauge strings with nuts and bridges slotted to accommodate that. The VSLs are a little longer and the body is about 1/4" to 1/2" deeper. You and your harmonica friend should be able to play together as you described. Myself...I adore playing with a Blues harp player! Yes...I have a pick up and prefer to play through an amp. I like the Fishman amp for my dulcimers. To my ear, they hold true to the acoustic sonic qualities. Welcome to the dulcimer club and enjoy the journey, Betty!

      I was raving about your playing to my son and he and his wife surprised me yesterday with a baritone dulcimer. It needs strings and I wonder if you would tell me what kind of the heavier gauge strings you use. Could I still finger pick with them? Thanks.

    • @ChrisShoemaker
      @ChrisShoemaker  4 года назад +2

      Wow! What a thoughtful and generous gift! Congrats Betty! Each dulcimer builder has their own specs for string gauges and slot the nut and bridge accordingly. If you know who built yours you could ask their recommendation. For me, I use a .34 on the bass, .24 on the middle, and .12’s on the melody. (Yes, you can still play Fingerstyle with heavier strings but it will take a bit more strength.). McSpadden has baritone strings like these. I like their “squeak less” ones but that is just a personal preference. Either type should work just fine for you. You can order them online from mcspaddendulcimers.com - wishing you much enjoyment with your new baritone, Betty! 🙂 🎶
