Are you obsessed with BANH MI sandwichs yet?? They are too good! Banh Mi's are a Vietnamese sandwich that consists of a Vietnamese baguette (which is the part thats called BANH MI) and loaded with ingredients like pate, mayo, pickled veg, and cilantro along with any number of protein fillings.
As a reddit poster said, you can toss an egg in a baguette with cilantro and it's a BANH MI.
BUT I wanted to make a more traditional BANH MI but make it vegan.
So im going to make a vegan pate, pickled carrot and diakon or what is called sour vegetables along with vegan meat to stuff into this sandwich and it's REALLY good!
Check out the @marystestkitchen for her Baguette recipe • How to Make BANH MI (V...

you're my fav. / love the work.
Bro: Do yourself a fav and get to New Saigon Deli in Denver... get the No. 1 vegan (but if you can, get a double portion of the 'real' garlic aoli.) will change your life
soap lettuce 😂 your killing me. i love that you use the pre marinated tofu. i love it
I received my Stur package yesterday. I only tried the Fruit Punch. It tastes like artificial sweetener that's too sweet. I gave up soda over two months ago, and I bought this as an alternative to buying flavored SmartWater, which is expensive if you can find it. Stur contains stevia, which I didn't want. I thought these were unsweetened flavors. I guess I should have paid more attention.
Vietnamese food and veganism work well together from what I know. They have a long buddhist tradition.
The Vietnamese also have a type of coarse salt covered with chili and garlic called Moui Ot, which you should try if you haven't already.
Oh I have never tried that!! I need too!! Thank you
Ooooh that sounds good
This is really not the case, lol. Many Vietnamese are Buddhist, but there's a difference between the lifestyles of Buddhist monks (who have to follow the ascetic traditions of not just vegan diet, but also no "seggs" or marriage, no possessions, etc.) and a Buddhist layperson, who still believe in Buddhism but don't have to follow those rules. So in traditional Vietnamese food (pho, chao, bahn cuon, bahn bo hue, bo luc lac, etc) there's actually a lot of meat and seafood, and a whole cooked pig is a very common thing in special occasions (weddings, tet). But you can "veganize" Vietnamese food like most other cuisines by using the same flavors but with tofu or gluten. Sometimes you can get vegan food at Vietnamese Buddhist temples (I honestly don't know if they sell it, we got it as payment for performing for their temple), but it is plain and not very flavorful, because they need to abstain from harsh flavors (onion and garlic is also forbidden in Buddhist asceticism). But a lot of Viet people don't regularly cook vegan food, so if you say you eat "chay" a common dish they will cook you is rice or vermicelli, soy sauce, cucumber and rau ram if you're lucky lol. Tofu is traditionally not as common in Viet food as in other cuisines like Chinese or Japanese (in Chinese cuisine especially tofu is common but not as a meat "substitute," they traditionally cook tofu WITH meat, like mapo tofu or duo jiao yu (fish and tofu)).
hey!! thanks for the shout, man!
Also can co-sign on how good stur is. I use it with sparkling water to feel **fancyy**
haha thanks for always making awesome stuff!!!
And yeah im a little too nuts with Stur!! its really good!
thank you!!!
Yum! You definitely need the Maggi Seasoning Sauce… aka MSG!!! It was an essential from our local Vietnamese bakery. Yours looks amazing though and loved you included a pate option. Thank you 🙏
I really am mad at myself for not keeping it in my pantry!! I need to get it!!
Thank you!!!
I am obsessed with Banh Mi
ME tooooo!!
My top 5 favorite sandwiches
Thank you, banh mi have been my favorites for a long time. If there's any way in the future you could recreate a Cuban, that would be awesome.
Ohhh thats a great idea!! I'll get on the Cuban!!!
I eat one to two banh mis every week. Maybe I really should just start making my own lol....... they're just the most perfect sandwich ever, I'm convinced.
I too have been obsessed with Banh Mi this year! My mouth has been watering the whole time watching this. Can't wait to make it!
I have never had a Banh Mi and now I really feel like I am missing out :D Such a lovely combination of textures and flavors! Even the tofu version sounds bomb but the second, leveled-up one... just wow!
OMG! You need to try Banh Mi!!! The combination of flavors is just perfect!
The added value of your videos is amazing. Many useful recipes that come from one single sandwich...and serve so many other purposes! Bravo🎉 ..and thank you for sharing your passion❤
Mushroom pate for the base, Char siu-ish tofu, pickle, cucumber, jalapeno, cilantro (some kinda basil, if available), spicy mayo, dashes of Maggi everywhere. Whew. What a great sandwich.
I need to get Maggi!! Im ashamed I dont have it in my pantry!
@@SauceStache I add it to the mushroom pate, too.
Looks really good!!! Love these sandwiches too - it just has all the elements
Soooo Good!!! I get into BANH MI ruts where I eat them for like a week straight hahaha
I agree about rice vinegar. I found some Asian root vegetable salads with jicama. I'm going to try this soon.
yeah jicama would work great here!!
You are glowing, Stache! Keep up the good work, and thank you for a delicious recipe!
Thank you too much!!!
❤thank you! My partner’s indian and vegetarian , and i want to introduce him to the vietnamese foods i grew up with, so I appreciate this.
That's great! I bet he will enjoy it!! too good not too!! and thank you
OMG Yum! I hope these videos are as fun to make as they are for us to watch out here in internet-land! Great sandwiches!!! So versatile… and the pâté idea was really creative! Kudos! 🎉
Omfg Sauceeeeeee u just keep on raising the Barrrrrr 😢❤ this is Gold
Wow! thank you!! I appreciate that!
Love the approach of showing a quick and a more thorough recipe in one vid
Amazing! Maggi and mint would be great! Love you idea with chickpeas❤
Thank you!!! I need to pick up some Maggi seasoning!!!!
If you're ever in Long Island, Witches Brew Tea House makes a KILLER vegan tofu Banh Mi
Nice I will remember that!!!
When I was in Vietnam they had some kind of sausage/cold cuts in their Banh Mi and that was incredible. If I remember correctly you have done this plantbased sausage out of soy skin before
Yeah! I've done a few sausages, and Ive actually made the cha Lua chay which is one of the meats that would get used traditionally in a veggie BANH MI!!
Definitely needs the Maggi Seasoning Sauce aka MSG!!! We also used to have ours from the Vietnamese bakery with sliced spring onion and fresh HOT red chilli… YUM! This looks amazing though. But seriously, if you haven’t used the Maggi Seasoning Sauce, it’s dangerous but so good.
Cilantro definitely tastes like soap to me 😭
ahhh what a bummer!! You could totally use some green onion, maybe even parsley here and it'll be good!!
Same here. But i still like a little bit of it lol
Same! And I didn’t know about that genetic difference until I was 50. 😂 I just thought my taste buds were broken. 🤷♀️
☹️ I'm sorry. Does that mean coriander seed tastes funny too? So sorry for the soap gene😞
Mark's *_"soap lettuce"_* is my new favourite term for that devils weed! 🤢🤣
I definitely want to make these!
Oh you definitely should!! they are soooo good!
I will definitely make that pate! Thanks!
Love your stuff, would love to try that pate! God bless 💜
Thank you sooo much!!! the Pate was outa this world, im still using it hahah
Omg ive ordered vegan bhan mi many times and loved it. I made this today and dang this is awesome. Thank you
A vegan banh mi is one of my favorite sandwiches of all time.
It really is an incredible sandwich!!
Literally my favorite sand which shop went out of business and I was so sad but that was ultimately what was keeping me from being vegan. Now I’m slowly building my vegan version of what they made but with Homade baguette instead.
Great video!
I got to try this ❤❤ and try stur … thank you !!
You are so welcome! You will love the sandwich and Stur!!!
Never heard of this type of sandwich before but they look amazing!
I love the classic thit nguoi/dac biet.
Boom! indeed! great work on these!
Thank you sooo much!!!
@@SauceStache have you tried any of the eastern European vegetarian pate? Both Eastern European and Vietnamese grocers carry them.
Looks good! Thank you.
Coming from a Vietnamese add vegan pate its going to give it another depth of flavor and soy sauce/Maggi seasoning sauce like someone else mentioned. Banh Mi is definitely my favorite Viet food.
the vietnamese place by me has a tofu banh mi and its the only thing my wife orders from them
Thats awesome!! a good tofu BANH MI can be really good!
Yum those Sandwiches look delicious 😋
Thank you 😋
I like the use of Garbanzo beans in the pate. Most other recipes I had seen before use walnuts. This just sounds so much lighter.
It might be a little hard to find if there isn't a spanish or asian market around, but Culantro might be a good substitute for cilantro for the people who taste soap.
Mock chopped liver recipes use canned peas or green beans. They work well.
I haven't seen that marinated pressed tofu before. Wish my grocery store sold it. I buy smoked tofu and love making sandwiches with it.
Loved your recipes. You should soak the dry mushrooms in warm water for 1/2 hours or more until softer before you cook. Use mushrooms water to cook will give you a delicious flavor. Thank you for sharing.😁😁 🥰🥰.
bahn mi is the best. I make a mushroom pate and spicy tofu. Looks yummy
Dr. Stache you did it again. I will be making that, when is your next book coming out
Thank you so much!!! Enjoy!! I need to start working on one hahaha Ive had a few ideas but haven't got it to pen yet!
Waiting in anticipation@@SauceStache
Could you please do a "seafood" series?
Sounds good!! I havnt tackled seafood in a while!
My wife and I will be so excited! I've attempted most of your recipes and they all turn out amazing. Appreciate you and all that you do for the community! @@SauceStache
Not a vegan but always enjoy your alternative gastronomy
Thank you!!
Banh mi can definitely be vegan. You can order the best banh mi chay at the banh mi shop at my local Asian centre. Any OG Vietnamese who says otherwise can fight this OG Vietnamese. 😂
Also those picked carrots (no daikon for me) are the best. Try them on veggie hot dogs! You will find a jar in my fridge at all times. Same for everyone in my family.
Thank you!! Could you recreate a pork banh mi with Seitan too? I used to have a similar one almost every day in Seattle till I moved and cant find any recipes online.
I'm lucky in California, we have vegan options for our Banh Mi as well.
Yeah thats also a great place for a lot of options!!!!
Been a while since I baked a li'l baguette for a banh mi, I should do this again.
Do it!!! You can't beat it when they are fresh!!
Its interesting how putting raw vegetables in something tricks people into thinking something is not greasy, you can see countless examples of this in both restaurants and home cooked meals and recipes
GOOD AFTERNOON SAUCYMAN!!!
Bahn mi? Not me lol! Only because I've never heard of it.
GOOOOD Morning Christopher!!! How's it going?!!
You've gotta try a BANH MI!! the combination of flavors is outa this world! You can stick any protein in there and it'll be good!
That Paté sounds so delicious!
How long do you think it stays good in the fridge?
I wouldn't do longer than 4 days. But you can freeze it in ice cube trays for individual uses or jar it!
@@SauceStache Thanks for the advice!
I live in Gainesville and am visiting Orlando in a couple weeks... could you list the locations in Orlando where you get your vegan food?
There are so many great spots!
Market on south/Main house Market -Great sandwiches, ice cream, kombucha and coffee!
Winter Park Biscuit Co. - Amazing ChickN and Biscuits
Dharma Southern Chick'n/Valhalla Bakery -Chicken Sandwich/Vegan Bakery Donuts
Winter Park Collective - has a great burger spot and vegan pizzas
Marios pizza - Lots of vegan pizza and Italian options
V's Vegan Diner - Vegan Diner food and bakery!
And for Bahn Mi I personally Like Paris Bahn Mi, their vegetarian is vegan but you have to ask for no mayo.. I always order them to go and I bring it home and add my own.
Planties Burgers
Greenery Creamery - awesome ice cream
There are so many great places im probably forgetting!
Is there a recipe for the mushroom pate?
There's an great banh mi place I go to whenever I get the chance. I prefer their satay tofu banh mi is over any meat banh mi I've ever had.
I bet its really good!! I love satay tofu!!
I love banh Mi!!!
oh perfect timing, I just pickled some daikon and carrot and I wasn't sure what the heck to put as the meat😅
Could honey be used for the seitan?
Haha, *"soap lettuce"* is my new favourite term for that devils weed (yep, I have the cursed gene… 😏)
I love bahn mi sandwiches!
So good!!
The 5 spice tofu at the asian market on bumby would be great in this i think.
Thats where I got mine from!! iFresh! I almost got the 5 spice...I love that stuff
@SauceStache love that place, too. I used the five spice recently in my tacos.
How does it go again?… MY MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!!!
YES!!!! MY MAAAAAAAANNN!!!!
pps. that pressed marinated tofu looks so much like giò, I wonder if it's similar in taste and texture?
ahhh I wonder, I think I know what that is and this is a little different... this is just super firm tofu pressed extra firm. then marinated
I want to taste a banh mi ngl
Yeah Im outa baguettes now and I just posted this and want one for lunch hahaha
Some places I have been to know how to make tofu banh mi and oh boy is it delicious (hint: yes 😋)
Soooo good right!!
I love Tofu Banh Mi sandwiches.. 😋😋😋
ME TTOO!!
I WILL ADVISE YOU TO DECHLORINE THE COLD WATER BEFORE YOU USE THEM TO WASH VEGETABLE OR DRINK THEM.
You forgot to spread some hot as chilli paste on the bun. It's my fave part
also I just had one outside my school that was $0.85 and I was like dang that's steep
hahahah thats amazing!!
we have a place that does a big range of vegan versions
I make mine with Panelle
ahhh I bet thats good!!!
Where's the link to the baguette?
Thanks for the catch!! just added the link and threw a card at the end of the video for it! ruclips.net/video/o5WHfwuO3II/видео.htmlsi=4ESFbmI1QeMvZIfp
I love adding Maggi too.
You know thats the one thing NOT in my pantry!!! I need to pick some up
@@SauceStacheYou should. Many people will say it's as essential to classic Bahn Mi as the pickled daikon and carrot.
Chicago's Nhu Lan Bakery has a Lemon Grass Tofu Bum Me' that kicks azzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz etc etc etc
ahhh wild that sounds good!!! Need to try it
Oh wow that sounds amazing
unrelated to the video but I live here and bánh mì is basically pronounced "bang me", don't be afraid
like, this "bonn me" just doesn't sound like anything
oh wow ive never heard that!! Even in our little Vietnam area of town!! I'll ask around so I can hear what it sounds like and next time say it better!! Thank you for this and sorry for mispronouncing it!!
@@SauceStache don't feel bad! I literally had Lisa (The Viet Vegan) coach me on how to say it properly and I still say it wrong lol
Also you look awesome right now
Thank you too much!!!
Ha ha, yes soap lettuce. Until onion and other sandwich stuff
👍👍👍
Is Stur sweet? Many stevia based water enhancers taste like disappointment.
Yeah, sweet ish.. It doesn't feel overly sweet. I know what you are talking about with the "off" taste. This has a more natural taste over some other powdered water flavors ive tried
Soap lettuce 😅🥲
hahahah!! YES!
👍👍👍👍
Thank you!!
your not steak sauce looks fire ! in which store can i find it ?
It's soooo good!! not yet! You can pick it up at Notsteaksauce.com for now! But if you get a chance and you are around a sprouts or Whole Foods make sure you ask the manager to stock it!
@@SauceStache will do thank u sm !
I tried to order your Not Steak Sauce and the order page bricked my phone.
wait what??? Can you explain more please? It's simply a Shopify page so nothing like that should have happened.
@@SauceStache I went to your website. Tried to order the sauce and everything froze. I couldn't do anything, but I was able to exit everything. I tried again and once again everything froze before I could order, but this time I couldn't just quit out and I hard to hard reboot. I tried a third time and I got to the point where I could click buy, but then everything froze again and before I could reboot my phone just shut off. It didn't charge me tho, so that's ok. My phone was able to turn back on but it's not a good sign for the order page. I have a really good phone too mind you.
I really want that sauce... ☹️
Why do you say seitan like that?
seitan- SAY-TAN not SAY-TAHN
Challenge - include gluten free options or substitutions. Gluten intolerance is no fun 😢
Come 👏 to 👏 my 👏 house 👏 and 👏 cook 👏 for 👏 me 👏
hahahaha I need 2 of me! or 10
You’re going way too fast. Can’t follow you at all.
show the ingredients list of your baguette, please. i can't trust that it's made without animal products. no thumbs up for you.
hahaha wild! So im not going to spend my time proving to you I buy plant based products. Please just move on to another creator to hassle.
BTW almost all Baguettes are just flour, water, salt and yeast ;) it's one of the breads you can almost be certain is going to be plant based.
Even with being rude I still gave you a thumbs up, it's not hard to be kind.
@@SauceStache you have a problem with facts so you made a personal attack while simultaneously painting yourself as "kind". i just want you to ensure you prove your claims next time, although I did expect a pathetic excuse from you. unsubbed.
