Federico Palacios I thought that the thing feared in little cup was trapinch since it has the highest attack out of any I unevolved Pokémon due to it being the same as it’s final evolution.
That's actually not true, Cranidos is the unevolved Pokémon with the highest Attack. Trapinch's problem is that it's horrifically slow and not even bulky.
@@shawnjavery not really. Onix is allowed in LC. And it gained an evolution in the same generation as Scyther. Scyther and Sneasel are banned because they're just too dangerous.
I remember using Scyther and Sneasel in Battle Revolution's Little Cup, and they're BEASTS! As soon as they're on the field, they sweep pretty much anything.
And now it's got a base 40 physical Flying move that hits twice. Scyther's only just returned to the competitive scene and it's already been banned from NU.
Since its primary STAB was 90 BP, that's basically like stacking a free Life Orb on its Flying STAB, which is pretty awesome. Though I wonder if Scizor would still use it?
UU is my favorite tier hands down when it comes to usage. Monotype is still my overall favorite but based on usage UU is the most fun for me. Can only play against wish killer so many times before ya go insane.
I personally play NU, mainly because I'm new to competitive and I heard it was a good place to start out, but also because it has some of my favorite Pokemon (Incineroar, Sceptile, and Gallade in borderline)
In LC Stadium 2, Scyther's stats are 'too' good. Something like Magnemite or Onix could be squashed by a switched-in Baton Pass by Scyther which probably has a Gold Berry on it. Elekid and Houndour's Defences are too weak and require luck to survive long enough, assuming they don't Pass or switch Scyther before they could cripple the status. There's a reason why the Round 2 Final Battle trainer has one in his party.
Also, not speaking of just that fight in general, Scyther in general is only truly checked by the rocks, and then it could always baton pass something else. What should be counters, such as houndour or elekid just dies to it because its stats are too good.
Just wanted to say, I really love your videos, Kellen. I've been watching for over a year now, and seeing this channel grow and mature has been an utter joy. I love each and every one of these break downs, and it's even inspiring me to get into VGC when the next year's format comes around (I'm just training up for now!) Thanks for putting a smile on this Pokemon lover's face.
Yeah, Scyther is one of the most epic bug types alongside its evolution Scizor and I think it is about good enough as it is today. Sure Scyther isn’t that good in competetive but it at least has decent stats. And hey, I won the oras Battle Maison Super Multi Battles with Scyther and I think Gardevoir and Steven as companion which is something to be proud of right?
Hp and the specials are the same for both Pokemon. Scizor just has better Attack and Defense while Scyther has drastically better speed. But Scizor is a major upgrade because it not only hits better, but it's typing is drastically better... If it weren't for the typing, Scyther might actually have been the better one since it has eviolite.
That was cool, I really enjoyed looking at a loved but unevolved pokemon who falls through the tiers but still has a story to tell. Thank you for the video!
ZubatMan _ oh people underestimate a lot of things. But it’s definitely understandable why they wouldn’t go for a base 110 attack mon in ou in gens where you have ou mons with 170 attack.
Yes my friend he was my clean up sweeper bc of that, didnt that super aerial ace and brick break feel amazing, i used it in XY and ORAS, never disappoints
@@adamtheriault6743 How does that matter? Scyther already gets Aerial Ace, which is 5 more BP than Acrobatics and is still in Technician range. You'd have to run a consumable item (or no item) for Acrobatics to double in power, which means no Eviolite. Most of Scizor's raw lethality comes from its STAB 90BP Bullet Punch, which Scyther can't yet replicate. You're not making much sense.
@@ForeverLaxx heres my reasoning Every eviolite Pokemon hates, with a burning passion, knock off Scyther is able to take knock off, and turn it into a mindgame 55 is the second best to 60 with base power, and with swords dance the difference is negligible However, should your opponent knock off your eviolite, suddenly your acrobatics becomes a big red button But even if they don't, Scyther can learn reversal, giving great coverage, benefitting eviolite scythers bulk immensely, as well as complimenting acrobatics for a knock off mindgame set To summarize: Knock off: spam acrobatics No knock off: tank and abuse reversal Stall: swords dance and knock off Revenge killer: quick attack Does my point make a little more sense now?
@@adamtheriault6743 That's a lot of maybes, so not really. You'd also need a bunch of support to make it work, and Scyther is still frail. "Abusing Reversal" is something people are already prepared for and that goes double for Scyther. If you ever use Acrobatics before the "trap" is sprung, the ruse is up and you're stuck with a weaker STAB. But because Scyther is so frail, they may not even care about a powered up Acrobatics because it'll be in range to fall to a priority move. A 110 BP move with no priority won't save you in that situation and suffers the same sort of "counter" that Reversal-abuse falls victim do. It really just looks like you're putting together a moveset with two plans that are both countered by the same counter-strategy.
I agree 100%. Its also why the (very similar) "Slifer the sky dragon" was my favourite of the egyptian god cards as a kid. The name sounds so damn cool.
Scythers return in gen 8 was huge. Even if after the crown turndra has come back it returns to RU. Being an NFE mon that shared a tier with jirachi (til it was banned), keldeo, and sylveon while holding GENUINE viability is huge. Welcome back scyther, if you fall from UU again here, just remember you’ve done good
Gengarzilla I don’t think it was a mistake, I just think it should only do more damage to flying types. The point of SR was to hit flying types since they were immune to spikes but doing extra damage to ice, fire or bug is just overkill IMO. Dunno if 12.5% for base damage is too much either but it’s certainly dumb that Pokémon like volcarona take half health.
@@gengarzilla1685 A lot of the determinations are used for balance. The Dark-type was employed to curb the power of the Psychic Type...who didn't worry about Ghost-type moves (Nightshade did specific damage, unaltered by type match-up or STAB) or Bug-type moves (both the Pokemon and the attacks were pretty weak and pretty frail). Spikes was intended to hinder Pokemon switching every other turn, and Stealth Rock and Toxic Spikes are designed to employ against the types that are immune or resistant to Spikes. And once a thing exists, it tends to continue existing. So Stealth Rock, affecting the types that can shrug off Spikes, was perfectly fine as a solution and something that 90% of people wanted...until it turned out that this meant Flying-type Pokemon would be weak to an entry hazard and some otherwise-useful Pokemon would face a 4x weakness. After a baby is born, it can no longer be aborted.
Personally I'd be fine if it just did more than its usual damage on anything immune to Ground, like Flying types and Levitate users, since it would complement the other entry hazards more neatly especially Spikes. The way it also tears apart Fire, Bug, and Ice types has always felt a bit excessive and suffocating.
I've always thought that the metal coat on Scyther specifically was more like a trade-off "evolution" where it essentially just gained a literal metal coat, making it heavier and slower but able to take hits better. If the rumors about Gen 8 "Armor Evolutions" has any credence to it, we might see some similar styles of "evolution" in the upcoming Generation.
@@MorganKing95 yeah but the Armor Evolution thing is just a rumor, since it fits both the motifs of "Sword + Shield" as well as being a counterpart region to Kalos, origin of Mega Evolutions. Plus the region seems much more industrial and if they were at war with Kalos at some point, the Pokemon could serve as armed forces similar to how we see in the past of the Lucario Movie.
@@JulianimeIsAmazing Why do they keep making up new evolutions instead of finishing megas? In my opinion, they should have just given pokemon another evolution rather than creating "megas", but I'd rather them give every pokemone one before starting another half-assed evolution that will only affect a handful of pokemon.
Agreed! Scizor looks cool but Scyther is a way better design. I think it's the one evolution I don't buy in the whole franchise. Scyther is one of my favourite Pokémon, even if it is mediocre in the games.
@@shirshanyaroy287 congrats fellow Scyther lover, Scyther is receiving acrobatics when it returns in gen 8, read the comment I left for why we should celebrate and toast it
Gotta admit though, Scyther was popular and known enough that it was even recognized in some other games or referenced. I remember Danganronpa V3 having Tsumugi making a Scyther joke during one of the class trials.
@Christian Gibson although i'm pretty sure he was just referring to the base stat total (both Scyther and Scizor have a base stat total of 500), the individual stats do differ as you said
I love Scyther far more than i do Scizor, that Animalistic design mixing aspects from both bugs and Reptiles together is probably the best i've ever seen also Scyther had one of the most memorable anime cries.
Man I love this bug. It was one of the mvps of my first draft league team where it just about single handedly won my third game and played a major part in the championship match.
Scyther got a major boost in Gen 8, with a new STAB move in Dual Wingbeat to break substitutes and a new tool in Heavy-Duty Boots with lets it overcome Stealth Rock. Scyther soared all the way up to UU, and stayed there as a powerful threat. Until the Pokedex expanded with Isle and Crown Tundra. Scyther couldn't keep up with the new threats and plummeted all the way down into PU. But it destroyed PU and got banned from the tier. Gen 9 Scyther lost Knock Off, but currently resides in NU due to one crucial addition: Close Combat. Yes, Scyther got a major upgrade from Brick Break and can blast through the Rocks and Steels with no trouble.
Honestly, I've stated this before, But as long as the Pokemon is useful in terms of their Tier or Anywhere really, Then i'm satisfied. Something being OU Nowadays isn't interesting to me because of Power Creep, so seeing RU or NU Coverages is nice
I have been waiting for this one. It was always a good in lower tiers but suffered from terrible movepool early on. Later on it remained good due to roost and eviolite. It should been a better pokemon considering it's design and roles in the anime
Would it be possible, in future videos, to cover the pokemon's pre-evo if it is excelent in LC? Like how Rapidash is one of the worst Fire types as is untiered, while Ponyta is a top-tier thread in LC. Afaik LC was only played in Gen 4 and onwards. This could be interesting on shorter videos when you cover more recent mons
It got acrobatics instead, which is better, consider this Eviolite buffs defenses by 1.5 Mathematically, that makes Scyther have only one regular weakness, rock. Ice, electric and fire are made neutral, everything else is resisted So eviolite Scyther has essentially better typing than scizor As for acrobatics, read my comment for why that's significant
@@adamtheriault6743 your comment is totally incorrect... Type effectiveness doesn't work like that + Aerial Ace is better than acrobatics because of technician. Acrobatics would be only 55 base power if you had eviolite as well duh
@@glaciveestudios6170 true, acrobatics is only 55, but, consider this If they knock off your eviolite, then it's 110 base power, so they give you a big red button, and it deals more damage than aerial Ace Plus, with swords dance, the 5 less base power is negligible On top of that, you can run knock off and reversal to turn Scyther into a terrifyingly flexible setup sweeper
@@glaciveestudios6170 very true, thats why countermeasures are needed I use a taunt weavile with swords dance, knock off, and ice shard to deal with hazards myself, otherwise, I use it as a free damage buff to reversal, hence why I use it over brick break
It did for me in XY honestly, sometime i would switch to life orb, but he was my 2nd or 3rd best sweeper under charX, and crit king kindra. Long as i stayed far away from all fire and rocks scyther all ways took out at least 2.5 pokemon at LEAST. Thats with no swords dance , just technician and super effective needed, fkn top 5 abilities ever maybe top 3
SCYTHER @ Eviolite Ability: Aerilate Movepool options Fake out Extreme Speed U-Turn Sacred Sword Swords Dance Double Team Throat Chop Smart Strike ... And all its usual pool
@@CyberchaoX That would be impossible with power creep and Stealth Rocks. As was said numerous times, Gen 5 UU closely resembled Gen 4 OU. Only reason Nidoking got to stay in UU was because of its better typing and gaining Sheer Force.
@@joegreen3802 Sheer Force did have a lot to do with it. Heck, it always tripped me up thinking it was a physical mon, but nope, special attacks for days.
Fun Fact: Scyther has a higher BST than Bisharp. It's not saying much since Scizor has the same BST and it's only a 10 BST Difference but it's still there.
Early gen 9 update: took away dual wingbeat and didnt add anything of note, it does carve a bit of a niche with a distinct lack of de foggers and being one of two mons with defog U-turn sadly having no roost is absolutely abysmal
I can't wait for when he starts to cover gen 8. "As you all know, the anti-power creep caused this gens UU to look like gen 7s PU. They also buffed basically everything."
Slight nitpick, it was kinda hard to catch on to when you switched generations when I was just listening to your video. Maybe go back to saying "In Gen X" when you first talk about how a pokemon fared. Edit: noticed you did it later in the video, so just keeping that consistent will help fans who are just listening while working on stuff.
Honestly, Dual Wingbeat is one of the best buffs it could’ve received. No one’s gawking at an attack with more power than Fire Blast, coming off of 110 attack, AND STAB.
That terrifying moment when you realize you are a permanent member of the void. The UUBL void. Always too good for high tier, but never good enough for top tier. Just hanging in limbo, knowing you could be the best in some meta somewhere that doesn't exist. Just because tiers arbitrarily arranged themselves so your power level won the reverse lottery. Yeah, that's tough. Love Staraptor though.
@@user-pp6pr5fg8w because it's better, what do you mean Acrobatics is 5 base power less than aerial ace with an item, so it gets a technician boost, then it turns to 110 if it gets it's eviolite removed
@@BlueAizu_ Meh, GameFreak has real issues with a ton of things - Game balancing being one of them. Sword/Shield will be obsolete within a year as they'll announce either Gen 4 remakes or an UltraSun/UltraMoon variation of Sword/Shield sometime next May/Pre-E3 June - giving us updated Egg Moves, Move Tutors, and extra Pokemon and/or forms that won't be compatible with Vanilla Sword/Shield... A rival who isn't so much a rival but a friend who "tests" your team, serving really nothing more than a road block... Cutscenes that stop you every five minutes to deliver a dump of exposition and various camera change angles... Including a lengthy tutorial sequence... Disappointing Post-game because Matsuda believes people have low attention spans due to mobile games, etc.
Honestly Pokemon's biggest problem can be summed up as, they chase the young and casual crowd at the expense of their hardcore fanbase. I don't see why they can't have both? Why not make a game geared towards an older and more knowledgeable player? Pokemon Crystal Clear is exactly what we need. If Gamefreak made an official game just like it, the world would be saved.
@@MrIronJustice Because they would waste time, resources, and money making a game dedicated merely a section of the fanbase when they could maximize profits creating a game for the entire fanbase to enjoy. I mean, from GameFreak's perspective, the Hardcore fanbase are already buying the games anyway - so why put the effort when it could be used elsewhere? I think the issues I've stated are more alerting: People just want to play the game, not be bored to death as they have to sit through speech bubble after speech bubble, stopping the dialogue only to showcase another cinematic angle. A Rival should encourage the player to keep playing the game to be strong enough to surpass them and move forward ready for the next challenge, not basically have another info dump character to slow the process down further. And they need to stop making the games obsolete by the following year. It's not just the technical battle things either, they've been adding new Pokemon that can't be caught in the previous titles in the same generation! And they expect people to PAY full price for what is essentially the same game again.
Didn't Scyther's move also inspire your channel name? (well, yeah I know other Pokémon can learn the move too, but I always used Scyther with False Swipe back in the day, to help catch Pokémon by bringing them down to 1HP) ;D
Get a Jolly Technician Schyther, give it Eviolite, move set include Swords Dance, Knock Off or Roost, Aerial Ace and either X Scissor or U turn. EV investment HP 6, Attack 252, Speed 252
Are you drunk? First of all; you only invest 4 EV in the remaining stat and first and foremost not in HP. That'd make Scyther's HP even, meaning it can't switch in on Stealth Rock twice, which it can if the HP stat is odd. Then you don't really want U-Turn on that set; you're a setup sweeper, if you start, you want to wreak havoc so switching out is whack, leaving you with not X-Scissor but Bug Bite, as that gets the Technician boost and outdamages X-Scissor. Oh and you may want Life Orb > Eviolite, as you actually need the damage if you want to sweep. Scaring something out or living a hit Scyther can do without the Eviolite boost.
@@billquinton5565 Its simple actually, Adamant nature would work fine as well. All you need to get is one Sword dance, nothing except an Uber will kill Eviolite Schyther in one hit. Then just go for sweep. U turn is with Knock off, if you pick Roost then X scissor is better, no need to get any technician boost, anything neutral or weak against flying and bug will die in one hit anyway. Except the super bulky ones, who can't OHKO Schyther anyway either and will be always slower.

Scyther still can be happy knowing it is the equivalent of an Uber Legendary for Litlle Cup, since its stats are just too gigantic for the tier.
I thought pokemon that gained an evolution but were single staged before weren't allowed in LC.
It's uu currently

I personally play NU, mainly because I'm new to competitive and I heard it was a good place to start out, but also because it has some of my favorite Pokemon (Incineroar, Sceptile, and Gallade in borderline)

Remember the times Scyther wasnt banned in LC?
Ah, great times, trying to kill scyther in stadium 2 was ridiculous, it just killed everything.
Martin Anderson Onix, Elekid, Houndour? Magnemite? Can all check it?
In LC Stadium 2, Scyther's stats are 'too' good. Something like Magnemite or Onix could be squashed by a switched-in Baton Pass by Scyther which probably has a Gold Berry on it. Elekid and Houndour's Defences are too weak and require luck to survive long enough, assuming they don't Pass or switch Scyther before they could cripple the status. There's a reason why the Round 2 Final Battle trainer has one in his party.
Elekid cant check it 1v1, scyther kills Elekid with no more than two hits, and im pretty sure its tanky enough to live a thunderbolt.
Also, not speaking of just that fight in general, Scyther in general is only truly checked by the rocks, and then it could always baton pass something else.
What should be counters, such as houndour or elekid just dies to it because its stats are too good.
Yeah 500 base stat total in little cup is uh not okay.

@@petercross1879 damn someone didn't get past the the third gym leader
The funny thing about Scyther is that it has the same base stat as Scizor. The base stats are only divided differently.
@@TheDeathmailscizor also has a much stronger priority than scyther

I loved using Eviolite Technician Scyther in the ORAS Battle Resort! He reaped so many souls!
Yes my friend he was my clean up sweeper bc of that, didnt that super aerial ace and brick break feel amazing, i used it in XY and ORAS, never disappoints
Congrats, Scyther is getting acrobatics, making eviolite Scyther a rival to choice band scizor in lethality
@@ForeverLaxx heres my reasoning
Every eviolite Pokemon hates, with a burning passion, knock off
Scyther is able to take knock off, and turn it into a mindgame
55 is the second best to 60 with base power, and with swords dance the difference is negligible
However, should your opponent knock off your eviolite, suddenly your acrobatics becomes a big red button
But even if they don't, Scyther can learn reversal, giving great coverage, benefitting eviolite scythers bulk immensely, as well as complimenting acrobatics for a knock off mindgame set
To summarize:
Knock off: spam acrobatics
No knock off: tank and abuse reversal
Stall: swords dance and knock off
Revenge killer: quick attack
Does my point make a little more sense now?
The name scyther is so much fun to say. It sounds so Ninja like, kinda like scyther

Stealth Rocks: 50% health taken away

Stealth Rock was a mistake.
@@gengarzilla1685
A lot of the determinations are used for balance.
I think it is so weird that Scizor and Scyther share the same base stat total
I've always thought that the metal coat on Scyther specifically was more like a trade-off "evolution" where it essentially just gained a literal metal coat, making it heavier and slower but able to take hits better. If the rumors about Gen 8 "Armor Evolutions" has any credence to it, we might see some similar styles of "evolution" in the upcoming Generation.
@@JulianimeIsAmazing
Armor evolutions? First they borrow Mega-Evolution from Digimon and now this?
@@MorganKing95 yeah but the Armor Evolution thing is just a rumor, since it fits both the motifs of "Sword + Shield" as well as being a counterpart region to Kalos, origin of Mega Evolutions. Plus the region seems much more industrial and if they were at war with Kalos at some point, the Pokemon could serve as armed forces similar to how we see in the past of the Lucario Movie.
Henry B That's why I see them more as counterparts than I do the same evolution line
@@JulianimeIsAmazing
Why do they keep making up new evolutions instead of finishing megas? Scyther got a major boost in Gen 8, with a new STAB move in Dual Wingbeat to break substitutes and a new tool in Heavy-Duty Boots with lets it overcome Stealth Rock. Scyther soared all the way up to UU, and stayed there as a powerful threat. Until the Pokedex expanded with Isle and Crown Tundra. Scyther couldn't keep up with the new threats and plummeted all the way down into PU. But it destroyed PU and got banned from the tier.

Nice finally covered it and with good timing since it's shiny form is out in pokemon go's bug out event.
I think Scyther would want y'all to vote for Miltank next.
Scyther, give Gary a hug!
Would you ever make a video on how much a certain move influenced competitive? Because entry hazards seem to be a big influence.
I always thought Syther is the coolest looking gen 1 Pokemon
Love Scyther! Ever since Gen 2 (when I first saw it).
I hope it sticks around for Sword/Shield (and Scizor as a whole).
And then Dual Wingbeat appeared
Even if it's only a cameo, seeing my favourite pokemon turn up in this video was really satisfying to see.
And before people ask, it's Cinccino
Chincinno. SUCCS
