Really like the support for trapping. I wish people would see the value in trapping and if they don’t wanna get there hands dirty see the value in paying someone like me to come take the numbers down. In the past would be happy to do it for free but fur prices in the dirt would need gas money if it’s not for my land and my benefit.

Excellent presentation. We live on six acres, and this past year I chose to let it grow. No cutting. The 5 acre field is now dense with underbrush, blackberries, thistle, mostly Poplar saplings, multi-flora rose, and a lot more species which I am not familiar with. We had a mama turkey last year lay her eggs in the dense undergrowth. I think she had 15, and I believe they all survived. However, she is the only turkey I have seen nearby for a couple of years. Our property is bordered on all sides by mixed age hardwood forest. We have plenty of deer, possum, raccoons and the usual suspects. But not as many turkeys as I would expect. I have my trail camera on duty, and over the past two years have only caught turkeys two times. What do you recommend I plant to augment the existing landscape to attract more turkeys? Thanks for the very good lecture!

Thank you for your comment. I would say that having a lot of opossums and raccoons could be a reason you're not seeing a lot of turkeys, as they are pretty heavy nest predators. As far as what to plant for attracting turkeys, you can have a plot of clover, wheat, or even something specific to turkeys like chufa. I would prefer the clover and wheat over something like chufa because it would also benefit your deer population. Also, work on your habitat. Consider some timber stand improvement to let more sunlight hit the forest floor, and get trained to use prescribed fire. There are a lot of times where turkeys will flock to a recently burned wooded area looking for bugs to eat. This will also promote better habitat for nesting. Hopefully this helps!

I second the raccoon deal. Buy some DP traps and try to cut back on the opossum and raccoon populations. We've seen a jump in our turkeys in 2 years by trapping.

@informedoutdoors Please expand upon Tip number two. I have a full canopy of trees on my property or goes right up to the creek that runs the length of my 113 acres. So I will not be messing around with planting the bushes or shrubs. However I’m assuming if I do some hinge cutting in open up the canopy if some brush close the longest creek in multiple locations that would do the job?

Yes, opening up the canopy would help promote the understory along the creek edge. Be sure to check for any invasives first. Get them under control first and then open the canopy, otherwise you may create a new problem.

Most of the time they’ll do it themselves. Just be patient and they’ll provide you the opportunity.

Will they nest near black berries? I have hens that roost on the pine trees. And then they go near the blackberries. I hear and see them all the time when I’m not hunting but can rarely call them over to me😂
