    I want to apologize about the loudness of the music. I realize it can be quite overwhelming at points due to it's style of cinematic music, and is something we will fix in the future. I really appreciate the kind comments about increase in production and delivery however, thank you for that guys. I have a new mini-series planned as well, that will detail why I don't play certain games and in my usual fashion provide a timeline of events and a litany of reasons outlined including examples. As the channel grows more and more we have 2 major series planned, one will target singleplayer games and the other a hybrid of MMO content and journalism together (live content :) ). Thank you for joining me on my journey, make no mistake...it's a long one and one we will constantly be creating new stuff on. :)

    Ugh, just hearing that theme again bums me out, man.
    Thanks for making this video. None of your content has hit this close to home for me. I played from the invite-only beta on my friend’s computer up until the announcement that the game was to close. I still have a few clips from cool plays up on my channel.
    It really does seem to be a mix of reasons why the game ultimately failed. Even the speculation about Tencent’s stock acquisition and Steve Superville’s departure have their place at the table here. Those reasons as well as EPIC consistently ignoring the player base on the forums and Fortnite’s unexpected success all led up to the disappointing closure of the game.
    While I would like to see Visionary Games create the spiritual successor to Paragon I’m worried that they won’t have the capital to create the world in the high fidelity I appreciate from Paragon. There are also other companies trying to do the same as the assets are free to be used. It makes me wonder how it’s all going to work out once these companies try to monetize their products.
    RIP Paragon.

  • @vincentdesun

    As a beta player with the $99 founder package, after spending hundreds of hours into this game and once ranked top 0.02%, I'd like to point out a few of my opinions:
    The conspiracy of Tencent's involvement seems exaggerated, people are leaving paragon because the game which was once perfect, slowly morphed into a much less interesting game over all.
    1. People complained the map being too large and each game takes too long, Epic could've simply shrunk the map while keeping everything the same. Instead, they spend MONTHS to make a new map--Monolith-- which was 100 times inferior to the original map due to path design and unfinished texture. Adding to that is increased movement speed, which makes a once medium-paced game feels like an Overwatch clone. There was once a lot of 1v1 opportunities which forces players to dodge opponents' shots and predict spell cast, after the update, it's 5 man death-ball the whole game. The game loses it's micro potential simply because the number of players scrambling together plus the speed everything moves and dies.
    Most people I know dropped the game soon after the release of Monolith.
    2. The fucking card system is the core of every game. It's a good idea to patch the balance of cards while gradually add new cards. However Epic decide to scrape the whole system a year after beta and build another one from scratch, which i would't say is better or worse than the original but many people who have spent hundreds of hours on the original system doesn't feel like learning a new system all over again.
    3. Match making is a nightmare. A lot of people complained the lack of ELO based matchmaking from the beginning, I was okay with it for a while because there were so few players on this game that the default matchmaking sometimes take 20+ minutes, if they start ranking players then sometimes you'll never find a game. But what's worse is the game never separates group players with single players, which every other MOBA game does. What happens in Paragon is single players often team up against 5 player streaks (usually with voice communication or may even be sitting in the same room), in which cases single players will almost always lose in a very painful, pathetic way. the top ELO players are those who always player in 5 player streaks and have a winning rate high than 90%. Individual player can hardly get above 70% because every once a while you meet a 5-streak and lose the game hopefully, no matter how cooperative your teammates are.

    • @kyotheman69
      @kyotheman69 5 лет назад +10

      card system was just bad system from the beginning they should just added item shop and you go back and buy items, this would made everything balance and not put pay to win aspects, plus progression in moba is just stupid everyone should have access to any items in the game during the match.
      map shouldn't of been that big to begin with, but reason monolith failed they forgot they added speed boost or made characters faster if this was present before they didn't have to make new map.
      match making can be effect by number reasons, game might had MMR, maybe enough people even though there were 800k playing system might not able to properly add people together, there's tons of factors

    • @Noobie2k7
      @Noobie2k7 4 года назад +3

      I mean saying that scrapping the card system for something else was terrible because players don't want to learn something new, League of Legends changed it's runes and mastery system what felt like every year until they reached where it's at now, which personally i think it's worse and too over simplified. Changing things isn't bad, and constantly changing things until you arrive at something that works is good, especialy since the game was in beta, that's a beta's job. Though i do agree the changes to the pacing of the games themselves was all terrible.

    • @meszarosandras7040
      @meszarosandras7040 4 года назад +11

      In my opinion the first card system was good. You had a choice to build a deck with possible sidestep to counter enemy builds. You had the chance to adapt to the enemys playstyle while building your own. Some stats scaled WAY faster than other stats especially on melee heroes and that was the core problem with the card system. A jungler/ganker had too much freedom in the jungle and could allow himself to not return to base until lvl10 to cash in the xp for cards. I had multiple games where I got lvl10 with 8-9 kills and 0 deaths still rocking the base cards while my opponents were already building their decks out.

    • @TheCosmicAstro-
      @TheCosmicAstro- 4 года назад +2

      The new card system they created towards the end i would say was absolutely inferior. I believe if they had built upon/improved the existing card system from the beginning that would have been MUCH better received and better for the health of the game. as for the rest of your points, I agree. In short. Epic spent way too long obsessed with Revamping the game instead of moving forward. Which turned away existing players as well as new players due to the lack of any real explanation alongside actually making the game worse as a whole.

      As someone from the top 1% of players ("Juggernaut575" on "Agora.gg" if interested in proof) I loved the game. But it had SOOO many flaws. And as I commented to Nerd Slayer, there was a LOT of bugs, that for whatever reason he didnt cover, but was a MAJOR pain in the ass for the entire community. For instance, anyone interested, go to "Aylit WTF" here on RUclips, and there are exactly 100 WTF Paragon videos, full of bugs, outplays, pentakills, etc. The funniest ones are "What Does Rhino Dude Do?", and "What does AT-AT Dude Do??", but they also show EXACTLY what frustrated players; GAME BREAKING BUGS. If anyone from Epic sees this, know I appreciate all the hard work. The game was brilliant. But whoever your superior was that was ignoring the community, especially us competitive players who knew how to play the game RIGHT, they were inept, and needed replaced. I wish Paragon was still here today. It was such an amazing game. I will never be as hooked to another game like I was with Paragon. Ever.

    Paragon is what happens when you replace a games designer with a mobile games designer and then proceed to change the gameplay only in ways that the playerbase didn't ask for and ignore everything that the playerbase suggests. I'm posting this before watching so lets see how right you get it :D
    edit: pretty spot on. game alienated it's core playerbase too much with simplifications

I miss the moment of the final push and an all out war with powerful abilities being blasted by every character. I miss the announcer's voice after the end of a match. But I think I miss most of all is the music. It's kind of true but it's always about money. Why epic was bought by tencent ? they were sucessful and rich as fuck. Dont they want to keep there ambitions, colors and indentity for themself ? I know it's more complicated than that but it's sad to see all these huge rich ass company forget where they come from. they dont want to innovate anymore. They want less risk and high rewards . Blizzard, Ea, activision, epic, ubisoft. All those studio and publishers could take huge fucking risk. Diablo is the perfect exemple of risk that change the market and created is own type of game. A fuck masterpiece by 30 guys in a basement. Paragon was an amazing calculated risk thrown away by chinese who were afraid to auto cannibilzed there own monopole of the oversatured moba market.

    For those who played paragon or wanted to play it, there are several remakes by different companies being made. I'm personally most excited for predecessor, which has Steve superville acting as advisor and felt just like paragon when I played a game in their server stress test weekend. Some negatives are that they have changed out the card system for an item shop and during the stress test weekend, the servers fail because of too many players wanting to play. However, I still think they are worth paying attention to when they release predecessor in future.

I even voiced my opinions when Feng Mao could solo carry High elo games(75% win rate in solo queue before draft) and they said "Overall he is around 52% win rate" and dismissed the claims. Great video as always man, well done. Long time player of Paragon here, since early access days and I have to say I still rank it as my fave MOBA ever. The original map design, the awesome character design and the awesome sense of weight the combat had a e just a few highlights. Saying that the issues you raised are spot on as I saw it first hand sadly, used to play everyday when I could but REFUSED to pay for cards and gems, grinded it out and it was as tedious as it sounds. Couple that with the fact that here in Australia on the oceanic servers PvP was virtually non existent outside of organised scrims from within Discord groups etc. Most of my time at the end was spent playing PvE, which when queued for would pop instantly but PvP you could wait 2+hrs or more. One of my mains was Countess and I was literally a day or two away from reaching mastery rank 10 when the game shut down, that's how slow it could be (Also I would fill any role that other players wouldn't take so I couldn't always play her) By the end a lot of the players just had no idea what they were doing you would have a whole team of carrys or a whole team of mid landers then they would all be in the same lane.. It was just a train wreck sadly. The card system became a HUGE issue and you hit the nail on the head that it turned people off the game. Alas, was truly saddened it ended this way though I am very keen to see what Phoenix Rising and some of the other projects can do with the assets. I just want to play Paragon with a decent community as I still think after all it's issues it has the potential to rival LoL, Smite and any other MOBA. Again, great video mate, thoroughly enjoyed it 👍👌

      I played a few matches back in the early access games. The card system was super opaque, and matches dragged on. It was still fun an interesting until all of friends and I got traumatized by a match that went on for over an hour an forty-five minutes until the least satisfying ending as we got ratted and our towers chipped down at torturous speed as we were unable to finish. Add serious mobility problems (every attempt to disengage was just go around a corner and start sprinting and they'll never catch you lollllll) and all my friend unanimously agreed we liked our other mobas better. Still, the art was gorgeous and I hope someone does something cool with the assets. Too bad it didn't do better as as game.

    3 years later, here we are. Omeda studios have made a lot of progress with "Predecessor" which is a revisited version of Paragon, and, as what we see, with a classic item shop for a MOBA. Dunno how it will go, but as far as I'm concerned, the video we have access to are really promising even tho it's still in closed alpha.

    You got it in exactly same words me and tons of players think. to make it shorter, they just started as a GREAT game on legacy map they start ruining the game with every next update. I am really missing this game, it was so unique and so addictive and satysfying. hope someone will make remake of this game so we can play it again.

    17:20 They said "grow Paragon into a moba THAT CAN BE MONETIZED". They did not say "Make Paragon into a moba." There is clearly a difference there. They planned to make it free to play meaning they had to monetize it to keep it running. They couldn't get enough players and find out how to make those players pay for server upkeep.
    I miss Paragon as much as the next guy who put 600 hours into it but please don't mislead people.

      old ass comment but they didnt need paragon to make enough money to pay for server upkeep. They make billions off of fortnite, they could have kept servers running forever if they wanted. Like Hirez, for all their faults theyve kept their dead games servers running for a long time so people can still play while Smite makes them money.

    Great video. It probably should be mentioned that VG aren't the only ones trying to create a Paragon "sequal". There are also Unleased Games, who are actually using the assets Epic has distributed, and also shown a teaser trailer last month. There's also RocketMania, an individual doing the same, and also project "Predecessor" (I forgot the name of its creator) also throwing the hat to the ring.

    Monolith felt like an arrow to the shoulder, the New Dawn card system felt like a 50 BGM straight to the heart, will miss this game forever. It was the best MOBA ever, Legacy was amazing, all the heroes where fun and well designed and i'll say that i feel like the card system was far superior than an item shop, if we forget about the fact that it was progression based and assume we had access to all the cards, the card system was amazing, in LoL, you take your Blade of The Ruined King, your Kraken Slayer and you can't really change anything, the power of the card system is that you basically could customize your items yourself, i remember spending nights with a friend trying to figure out the best builds for our mains, i rememeber that nasty Sevarog Build i made, you could 1v5 easily with it lmao, i miss those times ...

      yes please please please nerdSlayer, your content is good but before you upload, have a buddy act as an editor and have a listen. Then do what they say with regard to sound balance, the background music and SFX are loud as hell and absolutely relentless. You can do some louder segments if you need to demonstrate some gameplay, but you want it like, HALF as loud when you are talking over it especially when it's just generic BGM from the game

  • @venrisulven

    I played the game a lot with friends and we were pretty competitive but not near the best. At the start we just wanted light changes to cards so it was easier few new players but they gave a whole rework. Then when we were feeling ok with how the game was (we all enjoyed the 40-50min games) they decided to make a harsh rework again. Then again when we were all finally used to the changes and accepting it they did an overhaul of so many systems.
    It felt like all epic knew was to make reworks and overhauls not knowing how to make balance changes or tweaks. Every 2ish months we basically played a new game with a different map and a new shop. 'Paragon' was a moba. 'Overhaul' was whatever this game was at the end of its cycle.

  • @robertmerideth9345

    I think the biggest issue was when the monolith update came out and they axed the main map for a smaller, more chaotic map. They should’ve just added monolith as a separate game mode like clash in smite, and continued to fix bugs and match making.

  • @UItro
    @UItro 6 лет назад +24

    This was an amazing video. Kudos to the editor. You must have covered all the content through this game's life cycle. Great job! 👍
    I have still not gotten over this. I joined this game when Steve Superville was still leading and Legacy (original map) was up. That was my favorite version of this game, despite its shortcomings. Once Monolith (new map) launched and they overhauled *EVERYTHING* it was all downhill.
    I stayed and played and followed the development zealously ... waiting and hoping for an update to make the game fun again. A year and a half later it was declared dead. I remember reading every blog post, every patch note update and I adapted to all the reworks. I couldn't help it ... the original vision left *that* much of an impression and I just knew I could relive that with just a few more updates. What a fool I was.
    After this heartbreak I vowed 2 things:
    1) I will never buy an Epic Games video game *EVER* . I was there for all of their BS and I have lost all faith in them
    2) I will never play an Early Access/Open Beta game again. I can't begin to describe how frustrating it is to watch something you love morph and deteriorate into something you hate. Never again.
    Like you said in the video, the art team fucking out did themselves. So many memorable characters. My favorite design wise was Sevarog (Grim Reaper looking dude). Gonna miss him and the rest 💔
    Again, great video! I'm flooded with all sorts of feels. I'm gonna go watch the reveal Paragon trailer while scrolling through my screenshots folder. This game may be dead, but at least the memories of good times had will live on.

      Dude I was gonna type all this out but you said it perfectly. My friends and I noticed how they started dumbing down the card system back in legacy, like getting rid of some stats like cooldown and such. Eventually we realized they were just ruining the game after monilith (although monolith did have its pros). But man was cam winston a moron, and they absolutely no clear direction or even and understanding of what a MOBA should consist of. Then fortnite was the final nail in the coffin dude. Legacy version of the game was my absolute favorite game of all time. And it really hurts not having it. Like my friends and I still talk about it and how they messed it up.

      UItros you aren't the only one, I genuinely loved this game. It felt great, it looked great, it was very strategic and so satisfying to play. The characters were all unique and cool. It was the best in legacy and they just made worse and worse with each update. I honestly hate epic at this point. I'll never support them again

    • @UItro
      @UItro 6 лет назад

      @robbinbanks they were all over the place after Monolith. Removed too many core features and added several bad ones. I'm not a MOBA try-hard or anything, but when they announced the removal of harvesters because players didn't *get* *it* I couldn't believe how low they were willing to stoop to try be more _appealing_ to casuals. All they needed was Monolith movement and character reworks (I liked the faster animations and low cooldowns, though disliked how easy it was to die) and shrink Legacy a bit. Also Orb Prime dunk because that shit ruled.

    5:30 Tencent actually dont give a fk about inside competition. Inside their own company(base in China) different software development team have to compete(some time they make software team make different software/app that have similar function or targets same market, and yes they do pubulish all of them to see who come out top).

    The card system was hands down the worst thing about Paragon. It locked you into a role and didn't allow you to change things up mid match like you from say an Item Shop. Where if you specked damage and needed more defense you were allowed the freedom to do so...not in Paragon though.
