      Your video looks very good but you clearly haven't played the game, atleast not within the past year or 2.You have missed the 2 largest contributing factors to why the game is dying.I have made 2 videos with more coming soon covering the real reasons the game is dying and im someone that's played it every day for 3 years, ive killed every damn boss and was a castle lord for over a year. I wish the game wasn't so poorly updated but its given me a good insight into the thoughts, feelings and mentality of the playerbase, a lot more so than reading reddit / forums will give you since only a small amount post on those places.Your video is fine but shows only small damages. Only tiny percentages of players really quit because of all the early stuff / exploits etc and its simple. only a small number of people even bother to read forums and updates regularly. The biggest reasons are more broad and effect way more people. These are things like only 1 or 2 guilds on every server taking 99% of all the content because of how the nation / pvp systems function or the game having no catch up system for gear, leaving new players unable to compete or participate.

      Just something I feel you could have added. The founder pack included a discount on the store that at launch they claimed wasn't working then a few months later edited the founder pack page to not include and tried to claim it was never there. www.reddit.com/r/archeage/comments/2gx5vr/no_more_10_discount_on_marketplace_purchases/
      relevant reddit post.
      I personally feel the game was killed beyond repair on Auroria launch when they did not first fix the rampant hacks before releasing and all the top guilds who spent weeks/months preparing their fleets/resources to hold and claim the Auroria specific resources needed to then claim a castle were spit on when within 5 minutes of launch bots had simply warped all over and claimed it all.

    Great video. ArcheAge had so much potential. The time I spent in the Alpha was one of my favorite MMO experiences ever. Great world, systems, soundtrack, exploration, pvp. All squandered by poor business decisions. Thanks for putting this together, made me very nostalgic for the great times I had.

      I remember watching you play Archeage, but I never got into it 1. I didn't like that kind of game, and 2. I wasn't buying the hype... after I bought the hype on Rift and was let down severely. Glad I didn't buy the hype... but i'm also mad that I was right in my opinion here, I really wanted the game to be good.
      Then, Trion goes on to make both Rift and Trove P2W... so sad, I really liked those games.

It makes me sad that so many people just on the p2w bandwagon. I think it deters people who may have tried it from giving it a fair shot. This is still in my top 5 MMOs, and much better than BDO. Me and my friends used our wagons and horses to create a roadblock on a bridge that so many botters used on their trading route.

I've been a mmorpg player for almost 20 years, being a big part of my life, and still i can count 2 or 3 almost perfect games, where i could invest my time and be amazed at the gameplay. Archeage was one of them, and it didn't even lasted many years. Made so many friends, and had so many good memories it hurts really bad to a game like this to end because of the greed of some publisher (not even the devs!!!). Let's hope sandparks get attention from more developers and publishers so we can get games as good as Archeage was at it's peak. Great video btw, thanks for the memories.

      @@Mylada You're right, however you have to understand that the publishers dont know whether or not the game will be sucessful for 10 years.
      What they did know is that they had a hype going on around the game, and if they were to implement a p2w cashshop, people /will/ spend money on it.
      Basically, they made a gamble, like all other games.

    • @siveonfarcloud4190
      @siveonfarcloud4190 7 лет назад +6

      That wasn't the only problem, the game in it self had severe design problems. The concept of AA is good, but the implementation is just bad at nearly every corner.

    • @siveonfarcloud4190
      @siveonfarcloud4190 7 лет назад +6

      Schwert_2015: Sure those didn't help, but many of the problems where due to poor implementation and design. For example:
      -They allowed players to open multiple clients at the same time, which allowed players to multiply earning in the main gold making activities (farm cart follow trains, family fishing).
      -They made the credits to be account bound on a global level, so you could just make a character in the other continent and either sell your labor/loyalty tokens or do some quick and safe family fishing, buy and use Apex which would give credits you can use in your main server.
      -Trading pack was a cool idea but due to the inflation being limited to 120% price, only 2-3 of the packs were worth crafting. Some packs where so badly balanced that they always made a profit.
      -Since only 2-3 packs being worth trading and each pack only requires about 2-3 materials, it also ruins the prices on all the other materials not used in those packs. This means they are not worth farming, and also means everyone is gathering the same few materials which makes competition so high, its not even worth gathering since the price is low.
      -Class variation is a joke, there are hundreds of possible combination but they are not balanced so the same 4-5 are always used and they usually use the use the same trees and focus on the same skills.
      There are more problems but you get the gist of it. The economy is completely garbage, having a house/farm is pointless, classes are pretty much the same. Everything that makes this game standout from other games is broken.

      Because F2P combined with Publishers is a Doom Spiral.
      WoW uses a subscription model and the money that comes in with that is a lot more consistent I imagine. So there is less opportunity for greed to blind anyone.
      With F2P there is much more urgency to get people to pay and when Publishers hear Devs say they want to give things to players for free they lose their minds.
      I'm also sure F2P can work in theory but it's kinda like communism, without the core incentives put in place the whole thing just falls apart under greed and laziness.
      People just want to get as much as they can for as little as possible. So exploits and corruption need to be handled consistently without fail or else it spreads and falls apart entirely.

    The most sad thing is there was a early point even after launch where you could engage in pvp with hundreds of players , at sea too over a kraken, a lot of the people still playing are playing because of those memories of the early days. I login every few months just too look at my sweet ayanad gear just for the memories and the character i loved. such a waste of a great game

    Archeage was one of those games that had everything and still somehow flopped,
    it was AMAZING, one of the most fun experiences i've had in an MMO was in Archeage,
    summoning my grapple hook boat and making it drag itself to the bottom of the sea to then be blasted into the air, or "driving" it to the main farm over land using the grappling hook to pull it, everyone would jump on top for my land boat adventure and dance :D

      Nah i repeated it countless times... 90% of korean mmo's are pay to win... In 90% of korean mmo's once you use visa da power you are 10x better than other players problem of this + archeage is... That in archeage you can affect most of activities done by normal players. In grind korean mmo's like rappelz etc even if you used visa da power and were 100x better than others it only ment that you farmed mobs at placed where normal player couldn't access unless with party, farmed that place faster than entire party, flooding market with alot of shit BUT normal player couldn't really see it from his playstyle perspective so it didin't affect him that much... In archeage guild drives packs and one VDP (visa da power) player goes rampage on them and steals all... That's only problem of P2W in Archeage and why it was so harmful for game.

    The main reason ArcheAge died was because of the ThunderStruck Log market crash. Basicly a Thunderstruck Log is a very rare item that was used for crafting Ship and Wagons for trading, amongs other things. For every 5000 - 8000 Trees you planted, 1 of them could be struck by lightning and turned into a Thunderstruck tree, that's where you got it. This item was very expensive, ranging from 100-120g each which would take some time to farm up. People would stockpile the logs in their stashes and use them as a major currency in trades, when buying expensive items. Even though all of the other RNG and item crafting/upgrading, the game was thriving. Until one day, Trion decided to introduce Loot Boxes, which you guessed it, had Thunderstruck logs in it. And if my memory doesnt fail, it could give you multiple like 1-3 per box if you didnt get other drops. One day to the other, the market crashed, chat was on fire and everyone who stockpiled thunderstruck logs in their storages, were basicly poor because the price dropped from 120g each to around 10g per piece. That was the day that marked the major community backlash and was the biggest Leave Wave this game has seen. From what was the potential to be a AAA title, was consumed by greed and ignorance. It was fun while it lasted, one of the best mmorpgs I've ever played.

    • @kuvenpred
      @kuvenpred 5 лет назад +2

      Not to mention the trade crash. I and my brother farmed up for a trade ship that took literally 2 weeks when bots arrived and broke the percentage of the trade packs below 40% every single port... that made us quit really fast because trino did fkin nothing to solve this. OHHH and they later fked up the trade run system for good.
      Fuck Trion Wolrds.

    The problem with P2W from a business stand point is that it is short sighted. Games often start off with hype or building up previous fan base. Then they put in some pay to win stuff and sure people complain but they stick around in hopes things will improve or they can manage to compete without needing them.
    Eventually though time and frustration set in as they realize they can't compete against people paying tons of money so they begin to leave and then over time the people forking over tons of money have no one to lord over and only but heads with other big spenders but even then there is always a bigger spender so they too feel the crunch on their wallet and end up leaving. At which point the game pretty much dies.
    But the saddest part is the Companies don't really care, they just wanna take the money and run, they don't care about having a quality experience as long as the money is flowing into their pockets. And they want to milk it as much as they can before it dies.

      Same. It was good when it started (aside from bugs), but then the developers slowly started going the mindless co-op route rather than having a RPG shooter with large, persistent events. And not many games were able to get that many people together without performance issues or crashing, so the fact that Defiance could do that, especially on consoles, was a feat on it's own.

    Great video. You definitely presented more researched facts than iiii was aware of. As someone who went into Archeage from launch, I would like to point out a.... bit of an emphasis on some points you made, and the connotations. The P2W aspects of the game were definitely visible, but... I feel would almost fly under the radar more if there were not other things at play.
    Let me explain:
    It's a little bit of a cascade effect. For a CHANCE to upgrade your gear, you needed a large amount of mats. This meant a sustained income of goods. Even more so, because it was just a slight chance of upgrade (at the time I played, about a 1/8 i believe). This meant either large (as they were called) "illegal" plantations had to be planted that literally ANYONE could loot in the open world, or... plots of reserved land. This is where we get into trouble and its ALL Trion's fault.
    You couldn't understand the feelings of futility and defeat of having scoped out a property that was about to expire a week ahead of time. Showing up 15-30 min till the time of to see about 20 other players there. Shoot the shit with them about who will be the "first to click" the property as it becomes available. Only to have it INSTANTLY claimed by "fiwwfe". At one point, I even made a probably frowned upon keyboard macro (I was a bit done with the game at that point) just to see if I could score my 2nd piece of land that way. NOPE! Granted mine was probably not the best one. But.... shame to anyone ELSE trying to do that w/o one. Trion did NOTHING.
    The crazy thing to me is..... in Korea, trolls and botting is naturally curbed because of the ties to their SSN. Since that was definitely not the case in US.... it's baffling Trion did nothing to remedy the shitshow that insued.

    Please, if you play MMO's, do not take advantage of the Pay 2 Win aspects of it(If there are any). There's never going to be a WOW killer if people don't stop supporting Pay 2 Win MMO's. Great MMO's can be made if we stop supporting this business model.

    • @shrike6243

      There will never be a WoW killer anyway. Not because WoW is the best MMO ever, but because WoW's success was as much timing as it was quality. WoW caught lightning, and their doing so changed both the industry and the consumers forever. It's kinda like the Beatles, there hasn't been another band with that kind of almost universal acclaim since, and there probably never will be.

      The publisher is the one who controls monetization of the product, in this case Trion. The developer makes the product and licenses it out to publishers and get royalties as a revenue source, in this case, XL games.
      Therefore, the cash shop ( a montization) decision, is usually controlled by the publisher, with the help of the developer or in house development team.

The thing is though there is no pvp or other forms of domination against people though if there was a chance it would have happened and trove wouldn't even be here today it would have ended a long long time ago. Luckly that didn't happen and the game could continue which shows pay to win is never the answer.

    I used to play this, i played from the very start. So, me and my friends started really strong, we were ahead of the curve because we played like 18 hours a day (or close to). We had ships before we saw anyone else get them by pooling our resources. When the cash shop went pay to win, we were disgruntled. We did keep up tough because we spent so much time and got some really good spots. Then the new continent came and we tried to get over there, unfortunately it was filled before we even got to a zone, one of my friends did get to put down a house. So that was one nail because we were avid traders. Unfortunately the next problem happened then, because we were a decent sized group that didn't use the pay to win stuff, we were constantly outperformed by other players. We could go up against a group a fifth our size and they would roll over us, and we had decent gear and all of us were veteran mmo'ers. Eventually it was just pointless to try to trade because it was impossible to gauge if a tiny group was a massive threat or not. I remember this one guy i met trying to do a land route, at this point i had the best gear i ever had, i raided and traded for so long, he wrecked me like i was nothing then proceeded to kill the rest of the group i was with along with his two friends.
    I was just done... So were my friends, so we went to black desert instead, which sort of didn't last too long either because we were all burned out of mmo's at that point, hell, i barely got to the big city before it was over, so we transitioned to a strategy game group instead, its more fun and we don't have to compete with the spoiled rich kids, the people who spend money on p2w features are the most insufferable little shits i have ever had the "joy" of playing with.

    So many failed MMOs from Korea that had so much potential to be great: AioN, TERA, Vindictus, ArcheAge, Black Desert. Bless failed before it even launched. When will we finally get a successful one?

    • @aeden8008
      @aeden8008 7 лет назад +25

      Same for Black Desert. People like to rail on these games but from what I've seen they are still quite alive. Though TERA's community has changed a bit, my last visit was spent solo in one of the old hangout towns, on the Celestial Hills server.

    • @XKobe

      When people say a game is dead or was a failure they don't mean it literally. They just mean the game is not as successful as it was supposed to be. It just didn't live up to the hype. For eg. this video is about the death of ArcheAge, but obviously we all know AA is still running just fine.

    • @FNLNFNLN

    • @XKobe
      @XKobe 7 лет назад +19

      I think the problem is that developers are trying to replicate WoW's success by trying to be WoW. Especially all these Korean MMOs are basically WoW clones. You can't succeed being the imitator, you need to innovate. In order for an MMO to "succeed" it needs to be done without using any ideas from older games. It needs to break new ground. I think we are all so sick of starting a new MMO and seeing an exclamation mark over an NPCs head at a quest hub telling us to go kill 10 wild boars. That's been done to the death, yet developers keep doing it.

    Trion also played a role with the population decrease in their other 3rd party published game, Devilian (developed by Bluehole Ginno) that went live in December 2015. I've written extensively about that since some of the blame does belong to Bluehole Ginno. But the business facing aspects mentioned in this video regarding Trion rings true for what happened in Devilian where it has less than a thousand unique individuals playing today (this is based on in-game ranking data) on each regional server.
    It didn't start with a very large population either (isometric style MMO's are a niche to begin with but Trion's reputation from how they handled ArcheAge an year earlier didn;t help) when there were two separate servers for each region. They ended up merging to one megaserver for each region but that came several months too late as many moved on. The game has some technical issues that remain unaddressed by Bluehole Ginno (which itself, is a long story as to why they are part of the problem) which has caused even long time players like myself to stop (I also played ArcheAge but Patron-less as a potato farming lemon trees and what not).
    ArcheAge's original producer (Firecait aka Victoria Voss) ended up overseeing Devilian as it's product manager. She still oversees the business aspects of Trion's 3rd party published properties though (so both ArcheAge and Devilian). She's great in her area of expertise (large scale IT data management) but I won't comment on everything else. The game has no actual producers since July 2016 when the team was downsized (Rick White was moved to Atlas Reactor and now is a producer for Trove while Andrew Sipotz who oversaw things from the start, took the option to resign as opposed to being terminated; he is now at Ubisoft).
    That game really has the future possibility of closure once the publishing contract gets closer to expiration because Bluehole Ginno itself, has long been refocused on mobile (after service closure of the PC version in Korea back in September 2015) development and has a minimal team dealing with the PC version.
    Trion Worlds for their part has continued driving players away because of their earlier flippant disregard of the many issues brought up before, made worse now given there is no full time community manager assigned to it (often times, it is Brasse who has to go find an answer from Firecait to relay back weeks later).

    I would like to point out that AA was NOT a F2P game. The original game was subscription based, hence why the labor point system existed - giving limitations to everyone who played, only after July 2013 did they change to F2P.
    As someone who played AA for a couple of months earlier this year, I can tell you that what ruined the game was the overall poor implementation of what would otherwise be a sound game and some horrible decision-making. As an example, its the first game I've played where the developers actually when out of their way to incentivize players to multi-box.

    Im gonna just say it, most of us played MMOs like crazy when we were kids and we loved it. Now we desperately try to get the same feeling but we cant, the nostalgia factor last a few hours, and then quickly fades as reality fades in. The truth is, as we grow up we value the time we spent more and more as we often are busier. And unfortely 99% of MMOs are time sinkers. Grindy, repetetive, and just not that fun when you acutaly ask the question "whats the point". I remember spending hours grinding the same mobs in the same area, spending the entire day there and somehow having fun. Maplestory, flyff, wow, 4story, metin, and so many other mmorpgs and i cant remember, and i enjoyed them all.... when i was 14. Its not that they are kid games, its just that this days i cant play a game that has an horrific grind loop and pretend im having fun, it gets to me. The last MMO i enjoyed was guild wars 2, the only mmo i remember i got to max level and wasnt even triying cause i was having fun exploring, but once that magic ran out i too got tired, though it was the bext experience i had in the last few years. I dont blame the games realy, i just think my taste has changed, and MMOs are just no good anymore for me

    You missed the biggest factor the main population of vets left and helped it die.. The castles and end game content. Once a player gets to the end game content or wants to claim land with a guild those castles are locked off by the guilds owning. Which also includes the same guilds owning them soaking all players and being untouchable which allows them to also hold and control all end game content just by shear numbers so hitting level cap meant any player not wanting to be in a hardcore guild had no chance to experience end game content. that was it. end of the line. All because of the Land claim and castle systems.

    ArcheAge had sooo much potential. I knew pretty fast I'd never be able to catch up with the gear race and so I turned my attention to something in the game that seemed I found fun, music composition. So I had a bard named Panyu on Tahyang. For some odd reason though all the pirates wanted me to join them as they ironically saw them as the most mature of the player base. OT was a pretty huge guild held up by it's leaders huge ego, but they gave the game little more than more mobs to hunt and a common enemy. Though after they died off West and East turned inward and pretty much it was each side fighting itself. Or just troll vs troll. At least with a common enemy there was some camaraderie, but it was never the same after. I feel much of the actual real pirates in the game (and not the ones too fearful to commit to the cause) just got sick of it and distanced themselves from the rest. And I oddly found them some of the most enjoyable people in the game to hang around with and play music.
    Much of my friends moved on over time and I played less and less, only hopping on to play a few songs here and there. And each time there was just less and less people. The ship combat in the game was pretty fun, and I'm sure it'd of been a great game if I was rich. I did make the mistake of being a founder, just to be slapped in the face by those future packs that offered even better stuff. Now I'm a little more careful of what I spend money on (though I may have spent $60 on a guitar I really liked the sound of in game :3).
    Finally though I found a creative outlet in MapleStory 2 where I can get back into the music composition, but I hear that game might not be doing so well itself XD. I guess there's always Mabinogi if it doesn't work out.. maybe. XD I do miss my skateboard, and my Zebra (who in fact had better gear than I did).

    I bought the $150 pack too. This one was super nostalgic for me, and honestly I think I got my money's worth. The first few weeks in general were so much fun. I got into so many roberries, murders with a small group of friends. I especially loved the creative approach they made to character building. I was really hoping they'd go the GW1 route and have top-end gear somewhat easy to come across, with only great looking ones or ones with super special stats being a bit more expensive. Instead they did the whole "RNG Craft" thing. I'll always remember that sinking feeling when we calculated the average amount of money necessary to craft one piece of top end gear. But the actual point was when someone said it'd be almost a full week of crafting bars in time to hit that point when I finally gave up on the game. I could even look past the rampant hacking and duping early on, as they'd inherited a system with known exploits. Then the cash shop came out, and we pretty much all immediately ditched. I've never had that whole group of players back and dedicated to a single experience again. It was really a fantastic experience and I'm glad I went hard on it. I just wish they'd fixed the problems with the game, rather than created more. The core experience of ArcheAge should have been such a beautiful thing.

We had a few PvPers, but most of us were only into PVE and Gold making. I myself liked to run my lumber yards, go deep sea diving for treasure, and of course bait fishing when I needed to spend my labour. My god bait fishing was so rewarding back in alpha, and was so nice to come back and see all you boxes full of loot. Archeage alpha was one of my best gaming experiences.
    Now with beta I just kinda ignored since I didn't want to spend all my time making a new character just to have to do it again, so I just waited for launch. When launch came, my friends and I hit it hard using all our knowledge from alpha. We were welcomed with a much much different game. PVE was basically non existent, land was impossible to find after like a week, gear was much harder to craft (broke so much more), many features we loved were gone, and the dreaded cash shop made an appearance...
