According to observers, Ukrainian troops have taken control of more towns as they advance in the Russian region of Kursk. The Ukrainian military blog DeepState attributed the towns of Snagost and Apanassovka to the Ukrainian side on its map of the front. Ukrainian troops have advanced near Olgovka, it said. These villages are located on the western edge of the zone that the Ukrainian military has captured in its offensive across the border since August 6. The district town of Korenjewo is the base of the Russian troops there.
The US Institute for War Studies (ISW) also confirmed fighting in this very region in its report on Sunday evening. Such analyses are not official. They are based on photos and short videos published by both warring parties on social networks. The location of the photos and their significance must be precisely determined in each case.
Attacks on bridges on the Sejm River
There were also reports of another attempted advance by the Ukrainians across the Russian border into the Kursk region a little further west. There, Russian troops can only defend the Glushkovo district across the Sejm River. However, the Ukrainian Air Force says it has already destroyed one of the three bridges over the river and at least severely damaged a second. There was no confirmation of further unofficial reports that the third bridge had also been destroyed. According to Russian and Ukrainian military bloggers, there were battles near the small town of Tyotkino on the Sejm near the border. DeepState saw the village of Otruba on the other bank of the river under the control of Ukrainian troops.
With the offensive at Kursk, which has been going on for two weeks, Ukraine has for the first time shifted the war against the Russian invasion to the enemy's territory. It is also the first time since the Second World War that foreign troops have been stationed on Russian territory. Nevertheless, the Russian army and security authorities are slow to fight back.
The Ukrainian defenders are still under heavy pressure on their own territory. The General Staff in Kiev reported 145 Russian assaults along the front on Sunday. Of these, 45 attacks were directed against the Pokrovsk front in the eastern Ukrainian region of Donetsk. These figures cannot be verified in detail, but they do provide an indication of the intensity of the fighting.
The Ukrainian Air Force said it repelled all eleven combat drones used by the Russian army during the night. The Russian Defense Ministry reported that several Ukrainian drones had been shot down.
