Making a Basket Weave/Ribbon Style Cutting Board Tutorial

- Hi, in this woodworking tutorial video I show you how to make this basket weave/ribbon style cutting board. I show you the steps I take as well as the dimensions that I used for this size board. The board itself is made from Walnut, White Hard Maple, and African Mahogany.
NOTE: For some odd reason the audio for the first half of the video disappeared a few days after uploading. The following text is what was said during the spot the audio was messed up. "This board will consist of three species of wood. I’ll be using walnut, maple, and mahogany, but any three woods of contrasting colors will work. I rip down my mahogany board to just over 37mm , since I will plane it down to size later. I’ll need to cut 24 squares out of the mahogany later on, so you’ll need about 40in in length. I then cross cut my maple to 45 in in length, and cut two, 25 mm strips out of it. Then I cut a 8mm wide walnut strips, totaling 180inches in length. Next I planed my maple strips to exactly 25mm wide, and my walnut strips to 7mm."

I personally think this is one of the most beautiful boards I have seen. Maybe the design is not as complex as some others but I believe this is why it is so beautiful.
Thank you for posting, it inspired me to build one, I used purple heart for the squares, canary wood for the longer pieces and for the skinny I used tropical walnut. It came out beautiful just like the one you did.
Thank you! Sounds like a very pretty board!
This is beautiful! And a well done video too. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
Wow... One of the most beautiful cutting boards I've ever seen.
Beautiful...
Thanks!
Try alternating your clamps. Put half on top and half on opposite side to prevent warping during glue up. Nice piece.
Love the design of this one 👌
Thank you!
A nice slick cutting board. Great stuff!
Thanks!
I made that exact board only its 33x45 centimeters - love it
Beautiful piece ...... Thanks for sharing the video ..
Nice piece and I appreciate the detailed info. I added it to my to do list
Glad it was helpful, hope it goes well!
Just made this. Your video made it so easy. Thank you
That's great, Glad it helped!
Nice job! I learned a lot! Thanks.
Thanks, Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for this video king 👑
GREAT PATTERN, SIMPLE AND VERY NICE

That’s perfect. I'll try to copy it in my home turning workshop. Thank you for your idea.
Glad you liked it! Hope it goes well.
Well done young man.
Thanks!
Looks great, relatively simple and makes a great gift .
Thankyou!
That is amazing.

Bravo!!!
Wonderful work! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🏆
Thanks!
Amazing!
Thanks!
Nice job. We need another cutting board. Getting busy tomorrow.
Good luck!
Great job! I imagine you had to work fast when it came to glueing and assembly. You looked very organized. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. It really does helps to have everything you need laid out when doing a glue up like that.
That looks amazing. Might have to give this a go myself
Good luck!
Nice! Well done.
Thanks!
I'm impressed. Must have been tedious at times.
A beautiful board! Good luck!
Thank you, I appreciate it!
Really beautiful!!!
Thank you!
Eu adorei. Muito obrigada. I loved it. Thank you so much. 👍👏👏

A true craftsman/artist. Inspiring piece of woodworking. My compliments on a great video as well as sharing your art with all of us.
Thank you very much!
Fantástico, parabéns!!!
Obrigada!
Brother as someone who has a degree in wood, fantastic work brother 🙏🙏🙏🤙😃
Thank you, I appreciate it!
A "degree in wood?"
In that case I'd better mention my degree in skepicism
C’est un travail superbement bien réaliser bravo 👍👍👏👏
Merci!
super tare
Very beautiful 😍😍
Thank you!
Nice job!
Thanks!
I absolutely love this, and the board turned out beautiful. I guess patterns like this look nice--and remind me of apple pie! Great tutorial, and I'm so glad that you measured in mm, as the majority of the world uses metric. :)
Thanks so much! I'm glad you liked it.
Very nice work
Thanks!
Loved the video but am just starting to make these and I would have liked to see a bit more on exact measure.ents of wood needed and begin milling instead of music at the start. Thanks.
Thanks! Glad you liked it. Please check the video description where I explained what happened to the audio at the beginning.
Your video is amazing, how long do you leave the cutting board soaking in the mineral oil?
Hermoso!!!quisiera saber donde pones la pieza al final,es aceite, resina...gracias!!!
Gracias! Puse el tablero en aceite mineral.
Well I guess that might be a little better than the one I made in high school.
Puedes mandar medidas por favor... Muy buen trabajo de lujo!!
¡Gracias! Lo siento, no tengo instrucciones escritas, solo las que se proporcionan oralmente en el video.
Great video! Hey, are all of these pieces oriented for "face grain" or is some of it end-grain? was not 100% sure, but looked like it was all face grain, since your cuts for final glue-up were varying lengths (while, for end-grain they'd have to all be the thickness of the board). Thanks!!
It is all face grain!
Why didn't you do multiple glue-ups, instead of one at a time? Also, is there an advantage to using the sled versus using a chop saw?
I do just one glue because even though it's a lot to do, it makes it easier to get everything lined up right. As for the sled verse miter saw, the sled allows me to make the same cut over and over quicker, and more accurately than the miter. Hope this helps!
Hey man is that a thin kerf Diablo saw blade
Beautiful. How long did you soak it in the mineral oil and what bee’s wax product did you apply afterwards? Thank you.
I let it sit for a couple of minutes. He products used to finish the board are linked in the video description .
From the very first cut with the saw, you can see that it is blunt and that it burns the cut. Sharpen!
Beautiful build. I prefer my cutting boards to be 1-1/2” thick.
Why? just curious
@@davidlamb9154 I would assume because it makes the board more stable. more glue area = less chance of cracks and warps developing.
Excelente !!!!
Thanks!
Well done. Question: Do you have any concern about the end grain glue-up failing?
Thanks! Personally I don't think the end grain glue up will give out because it's glued on so many different sides, including the edge grain, which is supposedly just as strong as if there wasn't a joint. As long as treated properly, it should hold up perfectly fine. Hope this helps!
Super excelente
thanks!
How has this held up? With the end grain to face grain glue up, I can foresee problems with the wood expanding and contracting in different directions. That being said, I just built one like this and am con about durability. Most basketweave boards are endgrain, which will be my next one.
It's still holding up fine so far!
It turned out to be a good decorative board. The fibers are directed along and should be across.
What do you mean
This pretty... but I don't see it holding up over time. Cross-grain and long-grain are going to move in opposite directions and pull apart.
It looks great!! What is the type/brand of oil you used for this project? You said mineral oil, but I would like to have the details. Thanks!
Thanks! Here are Amazon affiliate links for the mineral oil and cutting board conditioner I use.

Thanks again for watching!
Im amazed they dont have ariving knife on the saw to stop kickbacks " crazy "
It's an old saw, before riving knives became a standard feature. Definitely plan to upgrade that in the future.
Was wondering how thick the boards are before you start milling. Couldn't see it in the description. Looks like it might be 3/4 inch
The boards were 4/4 lumber which measure roughly 15/16ths of an inch.
Very nice work. Instead of keeping the video superfast avoid multiple repeat of the process and record the video in a way a layman can enjoy and understand the whole process.
Thanks, appreciate the feedback.
I have not made a cutting board yet. Thinking of giving it a try. Folks, what is, in your opinion, the best coating or sealer for a cutting board? Thanks.
Mineral oil, followed by beeswax.
@@tschmath Thanks!
Mineral oil is good, just always make sure it is food grade. The beeswax based cutting board conditioner is great for a little more protection and for re finishing the board every now and then.
@@CalebsFineWoodworking I don't know of mineral oil that isn't food safe. It's sold as a laxative, so it darn well better be. 😀
Not all mineral oil is food grade. There are some kinds designed to be used as a lubricant for metal, these aren't food safe. Most mineral oil may be food safe, but it's always better to double check. Have fun on that board!
The huge, HUGE problem is: this guy makes it look so straightforward and easy.
Then my dumb ass goes out to the garage and end up burning down my table saw!
lolololol :)
Don’t get to worked about it , there isn’t one of us that hasn’t turned some beautiful wood into expensive garbage.
Looks great! I think if you spread your glue evenly it might help with less gaps. Enjoys!
hi Melissa. maybe you can help me. I have a good pile of off cuts and want to make a board. all different thicknesses. can you mix edge grain and face grain?
👍👍😁🇧🇷
I like the taste of glue in my tacos! adds flavor
Came here from TikTok btw
I like your vids but bro you gotta change the music.
Hi I’m trying to do this my self and I’m just wondering what’s the dimensions for the mahogany squares I tried figuring it out but I’m having trouble with all the dimensions
Hi, The audio in the beginning was somehow lost but the missing audio is provided in the video description. Between those dimensions and the ones provided in the video you should have all the dimensions. Hope this helps!
Cool friend very good your work... friend lives in Brazil and in my region does not have these projects. could you please help me Where can I get the program any link that I can do the course for these projects. Thanks in advance
Thank you very much! sorry i don't have any other information other than what's in the video and description, good luck!
What are the length and width of the boards?
hi there excellent job question what cain of oil of water is in the bucket ????
Thank you! I dipped the cutting board in a type of mineral oil. Any mineral oil will work, just make sure that it's rated as food safe.
Ficou lindo a peça, mas poderia ter colocado as medidas de todas as peças utilizadas, parabéns
Obrigado! As medidas de todas as peças foram mencionadas no vídeo, desculpe, mas não tenho nenhuma nota.
Do you have plans or dimensions for to make this ?
Sorry, I don't have any written plans.
How long did it take you to make that beautiful board?
I'm not sure of the exact amount of hours, but it took 3 days working on it off and on. It would have been finished quicker, but you have to wait for the glue to dry thoroughly before moving on to other steps.
What were the final dimensions on the board please.
The board measured approximately 16 inches long by 10 inches wide and 3/4 inches thick.
Very nice job . I would like to make one but in the beginning of the video I do not know the width of the wood you are ripping.can you please let me know thank you very much.
Thanks! When uploading the video, the audio got messed up on the first section. What was said, including the dimensions for the first steps are listed in the video description. Sorry about the confusion. Hope this helps and let me know if you have any other questions!
Talk to me man!
beautiful piece and excellent way to show how the pattern comes together. Do you have a cut list by any chance that you'd be willing to share?
Thanks! Sorry I don't have anything I'm able to share right now. Maybe some point in the future I'll be able to put something like that together. All the dimensions are mentioned in the video, with some in the description, so hopefully you'll be able to figure it out from there. Good luck, and thanks for watching!
How wide are the strips
The walnut strips final dimensions were 7mm.
Would it be possible to download plans? This is the most beautiful thing of this kind that I have ever seen, and being a newbie to woodworking I would love to try and duplicate it
Thanks so much! Sorry, I don't have any plans for download. I hope you can figure it out from the information provided in the video. All the best on your woodworking adventure!
You can sketch out your own with the online cuttingboarddesigner tool
Что было в ëмкости, в которую опустил готовую доску?
How many different kinds of wood do you use ? You do not tell how long each piece needs to be.
i like the video but i have concern for your fingers,
when you used the table sled the whole saw was moving back and forth and your laize faire router use are both finger oopsies...
Its nice but I thought the long grain of wood was soft and would wear easy as a cutting board.
Yes that is true, the face grain of the board will wear quicker than say an end grain board. One like this is meant more for lighter cutting and will still hold up fairly well.
@@CalebsFineWoodworking I was thinking things like fruit or cheese.
Are there plans for this! ?!
Long grain glued to end grain?!?!
180 inches in length ? that's right ?
Yes, That is the total length of wood you will need at that width to have enough to cut up for the board plus a little extra. It doesn't need to be in one board. Hope this helps.
Hallo !
Gluing end grain to face grain will most definitely fail at some point. End grain moves too much to be glued to face grain. It almost always fails at that point.
Yes, It worries me alot to give away as presents and have it fail later. I went to end-grain boards exclusively. Also, end grains offer many other reasons to consider.
Exactly my concern. The board is beautiful, but I can't imagine end to face grain joints not to break. Pinterest and RUclips is full of these beautiful original boards with various cross sections, dividers, etc. and I'm always wondering how these boards look like after 6 months uf use.
Would love to duplicate this. Unfortunately, the first 52 seconds of verbal explanation have been replaced by music only, so no idea of cutting dimensions.
Yeah sorry about that. I had put the missing audio in the description below the video but it's not super obvious it's there. Good luck!
Hİ 👋👍👌
Couldn't you have glued the strips up at the same time?
Do you mean the thin walnut strips on to the maple? because that is what I did. I cut them into shorter lengths before gluing them because it made it easier to manage, and gave me less waste due to the different length pieces I was working.
@@CalebsFineWoodworking I meant why didn't you put them all in the clamps at the same time when you glued the walnut strips to the maple 2:40
The reason I didn't do that is because the pieces were different lengths so I wouldn't have been able to spread the clamps out evenly. If your pieces are the same lengths then yes, that would work!
@@CalebsFineWoodworking just to save time I still would have, with extra clamps on the longer ends. Really nice board, so many guys making them it's good to see some different ones. Great of you to share.
Thanks I appreciate it! Yes that idea for the clamping should work if you have enough clamps
Аху.. Еть
wow ,glue much
Required this board plz
Lovely board but EEEEK no riving knife on you table saw....
Glad you liked the board. It's an old table saw before riving knifes were standard but I do plan to add one.
