Fred, never a waste of time when you give thise great history lessons. Its one of the reasons I watch your channel. Also, i just finished reading Pappyland by your friend Wright and all these talk sounded very fresh in my brain. Thanks again for all you do and the honest reviews. Cheers!
Always love the history lessons, that’s what brought me to whiskey/bourbon in the first place. Also, completely agree about how alcohol-forward some lower proofs can be which I rarely get with barrel-proofs bourbons. Larceny is consistently in my top 10 whiskeys every year - maybe though because I can’t ever get my hands on much harder to find bourbons, but I’m ok with that if I can keep getting my Larceny and EC BPs.
Thank you for the history lessons! I am still fairly new to the bourbon scene (less than a year) and new to the channel but enjoy hearing the back story on some of these companies.
I always appreciate the knowledge Fred. Thank you. Blind flight vs bardstown.
Nice background history! Never had any Old Fitzgerald but the Larceny BP’s(521,522,922,&123) I’ve had are very nice!
Great honest review Fred and I love the historical segment. I wish Bourbon+ magazine would have a historical segment anything relating to the past.
The history lesson that you give is one of the biggest reasons I love bourbon and your channel and also being part of club marzipan.
Enjoyed the history refresher and backstory Fred , thanks for the review !
The Fred Minnick palate is stuff of legends... But I still want that Old Fits because that decanter is epic, even if the juice falls flat.
Fred, how long has that Larceny A123 been open tho? Shouldn’t the OF10 have some time to open up to be fair to both? I’ve found quite a few bottles that were terrible at open that get way better after a month or two after opening.
Absolutely agree, and commented something similar. You dont just open a bottle, sip it, review it, compare it to a bottle thats been open for awhile. I never understood why reviews do this. Spirits need some air/to oxidize before you get the true flavor. Its usually always going to sip hotter, and the flavor jus needs more time. I get it that they have so many reviews to do and want to be the first or as close to the first to get the review out there, but that does no justice for the juice or the ppl watching because they arent getting a real review of the juice they are going to taste 90-95% of the bottle. But to then compare it to a bottle thats been open awhile just isnt right. Granted the larceny could still be better, but at least give the new bottle a chance to open up a bit.
I like the special/limited release Jack Daniel’s bottles. JD12’s bottle is solid
Thanks Fred.
Odd that the Old Fitz 17 and 19 were not as oak forward as the 10yr.
New to the channel but always enjoy your above the char segment on Bourbon Pursuit Podcast. Love the history behind the whiskey. I’ve got your Bourbon book on my to-read list, hoping to get to it soon
Welcome
I’m knew to the channel… enjoyed it very much. I have been hunting old Fitzgerald for quite some time with no luck. I did however try the Larceny A123 a few weeks ago and absolutely loved it.
Thanks for the history lesson, that is how I learned of "Larceny 1870 Small Batch" which I was able to purchase for $26.00 and absolutely love it!
After all the hype I've heard over Old Fitzgerald, I would have never expected this result! I guess having shallow pockets can be a blessing at times! Great show as always! Cheers!
I recently opened a bottle of 4 year old Willett Family Estate Rye and along with the spearmint/wintergreen mint note, I discovered a bacon note for the first time. This bacon note was a good one, not like a bad thing, but when I told people about it, they stared at me in disbelief. Anyway thanks for redeeming my opinion, that yes indeed, bacon is a legit tasting note. Also thanks for this review because I won't chase this bottle. Personally I can handle a pretty strong oak influence, but at some point that note becomes bitter and especially strong with oak + wheated bourbon for some reason. Cheers Fred!
It’s def the best bottle in bourbon. And it’s one of my favorite pours as well. I have three of them at home, but they are just so hard to get.
Appreciate you opening honest opinion, I already have two Larceny A523’s that were $60 each I came across a OF 10 that the store wanted $450 for but I will save that money for other bottles (future K. Luke batches)
Best bottles in the game:
1. Remus Gatsby
2a. Wild Turkey Master’s Keep
2b. Old Fitzgerald
4. Blanton’s (credit where credit is due)
5. Smoke Wagon SmB & UCUF (I know you hate the tinted glass, but it is sexy)
Best boxes:
1. Remus Volstead
2. Heaven Hill Heritage
3. Wild Turkey Master’s Keep
4. Wild Turkey 101/ 12yr
5. Hardin’s Creek
Drinking the 11 year from fall 21 at the moment. Very different from the 10 yr you just reviewed. But the Larceny BP has become so much more available around here in the last year or two. I've got 4 different batches including the A123.
Dang Fred!! Looking good brother. Gonna have to get a new wardrobe here soon. Keep it up! 🇺🇸💪🏻💪🏻🥃🥃
New and love your content. Appreciate your honest reviews and the history lesson.
Thanks so much for the kind words and welcome to the channel!
Question: what is it about oak flavours that you are not keen on? I only ask coz you mention astringency, which is something I’m actually fond of, especially in ryes. Also, does the dislike of oak notes apply only to bourbons or does it apply to other products too? (eg: rye, scotch, even wine)
Going from a 17/19 that I found spectacular to a 10 year that seems to hit heavy on tannic oak...Just one for the shelf to be pretty I guess is all I need 🤣
birthday bourbon has a great bottle as well. Blantons has to be up there.
It's fun to see you hype up LBP A123 as I watch this, knowing that in your top-100 this year you ended up having B523 and C923 as top-3 bourbons. LBP is killing it
The Derringer has a beautiful bottle
New, got referred to this by a best friend.. finally got around to it.
I agree with you on the packaging. The only one I like more is the Eagle Rare Double Very Rare that has the glass eagle in the bottle.
Might have to finally pull the trigger on the A123. The $69 plus tax seems steep for it's stats but I guess it always comes down to the juice inside.
Very interesting!
Just started drinking Bourbon 2 years GOOD show Love your education
Hi Fred, I am Ted.
Cleaning out my late Mom's, 10 y ago, there was a 375 Old Fitzgerald, probably from the mid 1960s, and I thought it was amazing. I am 25% Irish and I like Tullimore Dew; I am 10-12% Scot and I much prefer Glenmorangie! Here in stupid Wyoming, I can't buy a gosh dang thing. Can you help me???
Best bottling top five but in no particular order. Blanton’s, Old Fitzgerald, Very Eagle Double Rare, Michters 10 year (and 20,25) and Willet Pot Still
Fred, could you expand upon or point me to where you've already expanded upon the idea that the presence of the taste of alcohol isn't necessarily related to proof? Very interesting point that has me thinking 🤔
Definitely one of the top five bottle designs, I agree. Blanton’s design as well. But the whiskey in Old Fitz I think is better than Blanton’s.
Wild Turkey Master Keep & 12yr 101 are pretty sexy packages. Something classic about BTAC. But OF is definitely a Top 5.
I want that bottle of Voyage badly!
IMO the Old Fitzgerald Bottle in Bond decanters are the best bottle design in bourbon.
Of course, the first Old Fitz decanter I was able to buy sucks. Well, at least the bottle is cool 🤣🥃
Do you get these bottles sent to as being part of the media or know the owner of the local liquor store?
Agree, it’s one of the best bottles out there?
Def the best bottle but it's unattainable. Out of the products I can get, the entire line of smoke wagon is great. The bottles are beautiful.
Haven’t had either. I am finding reviews for Old Fitz 2023 10 year BIB that are very much the opposite of this review. I guess it’s sort of like asking, “ Do you like steak or fish better…?”
Best bottle design is obviously subjective, but if you think about which design adds the most market value to the bourbon that’s inside it’s hard to beat Blanton’s.
Larceny A123 is a hitter 🤗
I compared the 8 year Fitz vs Larceny A123. A123 was a longer finish and more complex on the nose. I did not get the alcohol forward on the nose. A123 wins today!
I want to see Larceny 12 - 19 year... at that proof.. it would be nutz
Best bottle. Hands down. Probably 50-100 of the cost lol.
Great history lesson, but all these fancy bottles..... you need to do an episode of the cheapest swill you can find and blind them.... but i don't want you to go blind so scratch that.... Have a Great Day Everyone
A123 vs B523, whatcha think Fred? If I'm gonna buy one...
123... so good
I'm not Fred, not even close, but if you can, buy both. If I could only buy one, it would be B523. The finish is superior to A123.
Larceny C922 vs A123??
Buy Rebel 10 year SiB instead for less than $100. It’s likely HH juice and very good imo. I would like to own a decanter bottle just once in my life, but the higher age stated ones 15+ years old. Thanks Fred!
You can find rebel 10yr SiB for less than $100? Ive seen it quite a few places, never less than $100. Usually 100-110
@@jacksmith2315 My last bottle was $95 in the Chicago area.
I dont know. Double Eagle Very Rare has a pretty 🔥package.
The only bottle of fitz I have seen was $600.
I really don’t care about what the bottle looks like. I don’t need a tube or a box or really anything but a plan bottle after I’m done with it it’s going in the trash. It is only about what’s in the bottle that matters. May help keep cost down but then again probably not..
Old Raleigh
Fred it's not the same. We can still buy PRIME in KY and Larceny is not bottled in bond. HH killed the bottled in bond Old Fitz and then pushed Larceny out everywhere in the US.
My Rebel 10 is probably just as good, just not in a decanter
After your review, I know the Rebel kicks this thing’s ass
Blanton’s has the best marketing bottle IMO. Cool bottle and you can spell out the company name with the corks.
I dont understand how someone that knows so much about whiskey/bourbon opens the bottle and sips it within 1min, gives a review, then compares it to a bottle thats been opened for awhile and had its time to open up. Judging a whiskey by its first sip when didnt even give it time to open up jus isnt right. Everyone knows that bottle is going to change after a week-couple weeks and the real flavor is going to come through. It does no justice for the juice or anyone watchin to judge/review a bottle that got no time to oxidize/open up. Especially when you go and compare it to a bottle that did. I do absolutely love the history lessons though.
Right. Because you know better, and it didn't oxidize for the 10 years.
Also, "juice"
@@themcmc ummm...it says juice. And i never said it has to oxidize for 10yrs. But a fresh crack is never going to be the same as the rest of the bottle, and which do you drink more of? What are you going to base you experience with the bottle on? The first pour the next 98%? Especially when comparing a fresh crack to one that has had the time to open up. At least with a fresh crack give it some time to open up and dont just jump right into it. This is all common sense stuff that anyone who drinks whiskey knows. Or at least should know.
Heaven Hill should just discontinue the Old Fitzgerald line and make Larceny a 12 year product.
man, that would break my heart if they did that. an old bourbon historian buddy like me would likely cry. haha
@@FredMinnick me too! Old Fitz is a legend!
Uhhhh No
Most years, Old Fitzgerald is significantly older...
