  • These 7 bourbons are ones I always want to have. "can't live" is obviously overstating it, but these are ones I will always restock and buy when I get low. They are all exceptional values and can be usually found with some effort from time to time.

My grandpa used to go to the liquor store every once in a while and buy a case of four roses. Every night he and my grandma would take a shot of the whiskey. They did this for decades. Both lived into their 90's.

    1. Russel’s Single Barrel
    2. Weller Full Proof (I can get it once or twice a year through established relationships)
    3. 1792 Full Proof store picks
    4. Four Roses Single Barrel (or barrel proof)
    5. Woodford Double Oak or OF 1910. They fill the same niche, so one or the other is fine.
    6. JD Single Barrel Barrel Proof
    7. Rare Breed

I like that Wild Turkey Rare Breed! It was the first one I had tried at 115 proof, put one huge, square ice cube in it, sipped at it for an hour 🤷🏻 and it didn’t seem to lose its taste!

Oh, I have also had JD Single Barrel (think it was Barrel Proof - it was black label). I think my normal “go-to’s” would be Buffalo Trace and Elijah Craig.

Wild Turkey Rare Breed and Woodford Reserve Double Oaked are my normal go-tos... straight or mixed.
      - Rare Breed straight up neat.
      - Woodford either neat, or as a Manhatten. Good stuff.

That's a great list. I just found a bottle of Knobb Creek 12 and John J Bowman Single Barrel at my local beverage store. They had 2 of each left. I left 1 of each for someone else to enjoy. I can't wait to try them. 🎉🎉
I have 2 Blue label Old Forester Single Barrel and just got another that's from warehouse k, which I hear is where all their good stuff comes from. My first 2 are from warehouse 6. I'm almost done with 1st bottle and it's delicious.

    1) Buffalo Trace

    3) Eagle Rare
    4) Makers 46
    5) OF 1920, feels weird to put two such similar bourbons on the list, but I drink a lot while smoking cigars and sometimes you just want that familiarity of tastes with your favorite cigars and bourbons.

I like my coffee black, and my bourbon dark and a little bitter. Any suggestions? Currently stocking Woodford Reserve.

    • @theonerow
      @theonerow  6 месяцев назад

That is a tough one! If you like Woodford Reserve, I think you'd probably enjoy an Old Forester 1920. It is dark, rich, 115 proof, and in the neighborhood of WR since they are both made by BrownForeman. Wild Turkey Rare Breed is a little less sweet than the 1920, so if you like more of the bitter and wood, WTRB is a good option

Thank you. Availability in Central New York is a problem. Only shelf stock. Can't get Buffalo Trace or Rare Breed. I have WT101.

I can’t live knowing I don’t have a Belle Meade 108 on hand. That just does it for me as a great special sipper at a fair price. Luckily I can usually replace it without a big worry at my local shop.

Mytmouse - I've migrated from scotch to rum, now Bourbon, and a frugal friend had recommended Bulleit Bourbon as my first Bourbon, and at $65 for 1.75 liter I am more than happy with it and I am on my third bottle. I noticed Bulleit Rye on the liquor store shelf next to the Bourbon, and I see the Bulleit Rye on your list but not the Bourbon. I'm looking for a little stronger taste once in a while. I'm curious about why you have Bulleit Rye, but not the Bourbon on your list. Also, I see you and many others have the Four Roses at the top of your list. Is Four Roses really that much better than Bulleit Bourbon to be worth the extra money? I am frugal also, so I don't want to overpay, or end up with a bottle on my small shelf that will just sit around.

@cmans79tr7 Well there is no wrong or right answer since taste us subjective and unique to each individual but there are trends. Like how Buffalo Trace is almost universally loved or how Willet pot still is universally disliked. I have some pretty expensive bottles but I appreciate a great value in whiskey as do most. I save the higher tier stuff for more special occasion and prefer a more budget sip most of the time. Nothing wrong with Bulliet bourbon, I do have a bottle of it, great classic flavors & notes from it. I prefer higher proof stuff most of the time with 100 proof usually my baseline. Higher proof generally has more complexity & flavors but if you wish, it leaves room to proof it down or experiment with it. For me 99% of the time, I drink whiskey neat as I want the full experience. Bulliet rye holds a little bit of a special place to me since it got me back into whiskey. I do like most genres of American whiskey and a few outside of it. I tend to lean towards ryes or high rye bourbons. Bulliet's 12yr rye is exceptional for the price and has some wonderful classic rye notes & complexity. I prefer Bulliet's ryes to their bourbon is all. Four roses just does a great job with their single barrel product. Its consistently good, its 100 proof, its available just about everywhere, and a good price. You get some variations with single barrel products with their mash bills and tier of the rickhouse and they are all good! I would prefer their barrel strength SB's but they are uncommon here. Its just a staple product for me. If you like the Bulliet products and around that proof point and want to explore bolder flavors, I can't recommend enough, Ben Holladay bib and Woodford Double Oaked.

@mytmousemalibu - Hey, thanks for the enlightening, detailed answer. Your hint about proof level probably is my answer. I really enjoy the flavors and mouth feel of the Bulleit Bourbon, and if the Bulleit Rye was a stepping stone to somewhere else, I don't want that. So, I'm getting the impression that my next step should be to step up to 100 proof, and continue with the Bulleit for "when I am having more than one."😛

Store picks mean the store is picking specific barrels that have been tasted and assigned. It’s a general rule that you usually select the store pick over the general label.
