    Contrary to what I say in the video, we HAVE played as the Byzantine Empire before -- but it was last year. Byzantium feels like they have some really strong bonuses, but at the same time it's pulling you in two different directions simultaneously (religion and military), which can be a bit awkward to balance. Can we survive Deity while rushing for a religion?

      @DonBeuBeu 3 года назад +10

      Byzance is military, you just need crusade and a couple of holy sites.

      Hey Quill, great content as always!
      I don't think it's necessary two different directions, in the end Byzantium is a domination victory civ upon which religion is completely synergistic (and thus necessary) considering that it makes it that much easier for units to attack walls with no penalty (you avoid the -85% reduction damage and helps reduce all those usual necessary siege units to break them), makes it easy to retain newly conquered ones (loyalty swing form -3 to +3), grants a nice small combat bonus and you can have the crusade policy active which helps so much (+10 combat strength). So with a religion and taking the effort to convert enemy cities with missionaries and killing enemy units you'll be steam rolling your enemies.
      Also, being able to print cost free units with the hippodrome helps mitigate all those extra resources spent earlier building this district and the holy sites (it helps you catch up), plus it makes it so you have extra amenities which definitely helps retaining those conquered cities.
      BTW, even though you'll need to spend time and resources for a religion (and it's not 100% guaranteed in deity even if you do holy site prayers), I find it much more interesting adapting the domination gameplay to the civ's strength rather than following the usual domination recipe, so to say, which gives Civ 6 much more replayability.
      Anyway, I find it a great opportunity to tag along this let's play and start a Byzantium run!!
      BTW: Something that really improved my gameplay is being more aware on planning newly funded cities (specially the first ones), I try to look for a couple few great tiles (eg. 2food & 2prod, 1food & 3prod, etc) for the first ring (or even second). In hindsight you could've settled you second city one tile towards the left and your 3rd city over the salt at the beginning of the river that Antioch is settled and I believe would give you a much better starting position. This would've given you extra gold and allowed an early selling of a luxury, which is always nice. Though hindsight is 20/20 plus you had the barbarian problem going on.

      Byzantium is balanced to spread your religion ahead of your conquests to weaken your enemies.

    • @nevilleneville6518
      @nevilleneville6518 3 года назад +5

      Byzantium are designed to be a religious and military civ. Getting a religion and choosing Crusade as one of your beliefs is absolutely essential. Then spam entertainment complexes everywhere for the free cavalry.

    • @nevilleneville6518
      @nevilleneville6518 3 года назад

      Also, I know it's almost a meme at this point that you speed read the first half of every description and ignore the second half, but ***please*** take the time to read ALL of your leader, civ and UU/UB descriptions. Right now it's like you only have an idea of half of what Byzantium actually does.

  • @mortuos557
    @mortuos557 3 года назад +47

    Byzantium with crusader is bonkers.
    you convert via conquest and conquer via converting. and the free cavalry for entertainment complexes makes taking care of your amenities way more worthwhile

      @ZanZanDK 3 года назад +1

      Yeah, exactly. When I saw he didn't pick Crusade the entire game fell to the floor for me. Byzantium can get some insane bonuses later on in the game. With six religions, you can get up to +18, which is really sick, and coupled with +10 from crusade, you just steamroll the enemy.

    Spreading your religion combined with the Crusade belief can make Byzantium one of the strongest domination civs. They’re quite fun to play. You can also get super easy golden ages by spreading your religion to enemies you’re at war with.

    I was surprised when you played them back in November that you avoided war the whole game even though they're a great military civ.

  • @willbrolley262
    @willbrolley262 3 года назад +14

    Oh Quill. You meet Sumeria and don't immediately declare friendship? Gilgabro is so disappointed.
    Byzantium religion isn't actually too hard to get, compared to some of the other civs. You get a free Great Prophet point after building the Holy Site, so while you won't get the first or maybe even the second religion, you should be able to get a religion fairly easily, especially considering that you're on a Large Map, which brings the total number of religions available up.
    That last update actually reduced the desire for a religion overall among the AI, but you still have to try (with either a shrine or holy site prayers). You're just much more likely to succeed these days.
    EDIT: No, Quill! Always, Always grab the Crusader belief when playing as Byzantium. ALWAYS. Hopefully you can still nab it when you evangelize your religion.

    29:33 🎶THAT'S WHY YOU PAY ATTENTION...
    TO WHAT YOU'RE CIV DOES🎶
    You are a civ that pushes with military to push your religion to better push militaristically and you make people so happy with your Hippodromes that they join your army(get free tagmas!) to enhance your militaristic push!
    Yes, I know this is 18 months late and Quill is HIGHLY unlikely to see it(not really for him, it's to make me feel better about him pushing religion way to hard with a military civ... AGAIN(I just watch the game he streamed of this about 8 months before this where he did the same thing))!

      I know he likes to play quickly to keep things interesting and that's his style, but when he's playing a civ he doesn't really know very well and only skim reads how the uniques work, he's never going to get the best out of them. At least when he's streaming he has chat telling him this stuff.

      It's best if streaming anything to youtube to avoid having any music in it. The rights to listen to it while playing the game do not extend to uploading on streams. That also applies to rights to listen to music from a radio station don't extend to being on a stream either.

    One thing I'd recommend is watching PotatoMcWhiskey. Not that you're bad at Civ, you're playing on deity of course not, but I've learned a lot since I started watching him and he really shows that just about any strategy, including religion, can work, and even be really strong, even on deity. He taught me a lot of other tactics and strategies to use that really allow you to have much greater control over the game and even dominate the AI. One of the big things he does is micromanage a lot, which I know you don't like doing, but I think you could learn a lot watching his LPs. All that said, this start was kind of ass cheeks.

      You don't need to have found a religion for the leader ability to work (the one where your cavalry doesn't take penalties for attacking same religion cities) but you do need to have found a religion for the civ ability to work (bonus military strength for every holy site converted to your religion.)

    • @jayhenry2197
      @jayhenry2197 3 года назад +3

      Thanks, that's probably how I got confused. I know once you get the the mechanics rolling, this is a powerful conquest civ. Just seems like their early game isn't balanced for Deity at all.

    • @heatth1474
      @heatth1474 3 года назад +2

      @@jayhenry2197 I have the feeling that a lot of Civ is not balanced for Deity at all. I always found it to be mostly a frustrating difficulty as what it mostly does is to "disable" a bunch of different game mechanics and force you down to a very specific path early on. Civ could really use a "scaling difficulty" like Stellaris or otherwise better catch up mechanics for the AI. Something to make the overall game more challenging without making the early game broken.

      It probably doesn't matter at all which Civ VI series you watch in as long as within the series you stay in order (episode 1 then 2, etc.) Of course the older ones were produced first - and there's also been patches so if you watch an old stream there's a chance that things have changed.

    Just leaving some feedback, maybe it's just me, but I do not care to watch Civ 6 content that doesn't have the Secret Society and/or Heroes and/or Monopolies modes enabled.
    The game does not feel complete with at least one, if not all three, of those modes in my opinion.
