Thank you so much for comparing with the 35mm F2! So many comparison videos when the 33mm f1.4 initially came out were just between it and the 35 f1.4 and it made me so disappointed xD
Hey - awesome! I'm glad you enjoyed. Yes - I wanted to compare all three since all three are in the same category, so thanks for letting me know you liked it!
I've owned the 35 f1.4 since I first got into the Fuji system back in 2014 and it's one of my favorites. One of the positive things about this lens (for me) is that it doesn't have a "hot spot" when shooting on my infrared camera. But I have to say that the 33 f1.4 is very intriguing and looks great (I wonder how it does on infrared?). My first SLR camera was also a Pentax K1000. I had a 50mm and a 135mm lens. Sometimes I think I should try limiting myself to those two lenses (35mm and 90mm Fuji lenses) and see what I can create. Great video, Jerred!
Thanks, Terry. I hear you on all of that. Does the lack of hot spot work even with an R73 filter, or only with your converted stuff? And... I really really love the 33 if you can't tell. I'm taking it out tomorrow for a big photo trip in Nebraska, and I can't wait to get more out of it.
I just got the 33mm f1.4. I know some street photographers say it's too zoomed-in/tight for street stuff. But I'm so glad I got it and not a wider lens. I feel like wider lenses (18mm etc) can create bad habits because they give a dynamic feel to boring scenes. I'd rather have to work a bit harder to find each composition but then have it feel more natural, and the basically distortion-less 33mm gives me that. (And that's not just me theory-crafting. The 16-55mm has been my main lens for two years, so I know when going wide got lazy.)
When I bought my XF35 f1.4 in 2014 it was the only game in town. It was my first Fuji lens & one I'll never part with. I love that lens, oh man that crushed beer can hood is neat. Since I've moved to current model bodies the focus has improved a lot. I have shot with the f2 & it's nice, but since I have the f1.4 I figure I'm good. The 33mm looks to be a winner, but that price hurts this old guy in the wallet. ;-) Nice video Jerred keep up the good work.
Thanks, Chuck! I appreciate your support. I love that you'll never part with that lens... I totally get it. I have the Canon 50 1.4 because I have such fond memories of it... probably will never sell it just because having it with my old original 5D was such a foundational part of my photography journey!
Great video 👌 all my new 1.4 lenses are eerily quiet and have such amazing instant focusing speed and it’s a real upgrade from older lenses and it’s double the speed to focus even from the Fuji cron lenses
Agree. Having come from the original 23 and 35mm f/1.4 the newest versions just seem a lot more confidence building when using AF-C I’m noticing. Became a lot more important to me since focusing more on family day in the life photogrpahy including fast moving toddlers.
Hi Jerred, thanks for all of the sample pics in the Fuji X Passion article. Really appreciate your different use cases which help justify my situation...I first bought the 35 f/2 with my first Fuji XT-20 which I continue to love as a walk around lens....and then later on the 1.4 to check out the "magic", especially with portraits and then fairly recently finally the newest 33 which I shot for a live event and agree the focus was dead on. I too love the 50mm focal length and don't think I'll let any of them go. Cheers,
Thanks, David! I appreciate your comment! The 50mm is such a versatile focal length.... I continue to use it all the time. Again - thank you - comments like this keep me motivated to continue!
I have the 33mm 1.4 (with an xt2) and I do enjoy the fast focus and the sharpness to a degree. I think this video helped me to decide which to get actually. Focus is important to me for pictures of my daughter and fleeting street moments and I do like sharp. However, I’d say the sharpness of the 33mm is a bit too clinical and the bokeh is not as smooth as I’d like (you notice it, it’s almost distracting), so now I find myself hankering after the 35mm 1.4. Have a quick look on the Flickr groups for each of these lenses; I think the differences in IQ are apparent there.
I have the 35mm 1.4, my only lens with an Xpro 2 body. Will only buy more glass, once I've "mastered" that focal length.... It's lush man! I like to take my time when taking shots and the autofocus sound doesn't bother me now.
That's awesome, Mashud! Honestly, the sound isn't as big of a deal as maybe I made it out, right? And when I go through images, those 35 1.4 just look fantastic, and that's what matters!
@@JerredZ Well, the noise of the lens can be an issue for some, for sure. The new 33mm 1.4, like you said is both lenses together, I wish mine was WR not sure I need it though. I have subscribed! Are you going to create videos on gear or a mixture of theory and finding your style etc... or workflows on finding the right exposure etc
Hey, Gary! Thanks for the comment - I appreciate the reinforcement! I get bored watching other videos do really deep dives, and I just want to see what real people can do with the stuff, so that's what I try to do too. Again - thank you!
@@JerredZ Totally agree. A fresh approach always keeps my interest. I've been struggling going back to a 23 but I am now convinced a 33 would be a better choice for me. Thanks agin. Looking forward to more "authentic" reviews and commentary. Best, Gary
Thanks for this - I was looking for something just like it (found it via your blog). Unfortunately, it seems that you've confirmed what I've been fearing: gotta get both the 35mm f2 and the 33. :)
I couldn't decide which of the 35mm lenses to keep for myself. F/2 or F/1.4. And decided to keep both :). They are really different in the picture for me
Tks for your video. I am going to make the big jump and switch from my phone to...xt30 ii. I am a beginner in photography and i want to buy my first lense ( prime ).For my budget (350-400 $) i need a polyvalent ( a kind of all purposes) and compact (which will encourage me to use). I am hesitating between between 35 mm f2 or 27mm f2.8 (or pehaps a 3rd option i did not think about). I will be very hapoy to hear your advises and recomnandation
Hey! I'd go with the 35mm f/2 - it focuses much quicker than the 27 and has the ability to get you some extra light. Definitely worth it if you ask me. CONGRATS on getting the XT30ii - you are going to do amazing things with it!!!!!
I bounce back and forth between the X100v and an xt3 with the 35mmf2. The focal lengths seem way more different than you'd think. Or at least, I'd think lol. That 33mm looks so good! It will be mine, oh yes, it will be mine.
Well, Lee - the Xt3 with the 23mm f/2 would be the next best bet, right? Then you'd be set! :). not that you need a reason to buy anything, right? Lol!
Thanks for the great comparison. I would love that 33 f1.4, but it's not in my budget as an amateur. I'm in the f2 league. Question: Of the 35mm f2 and the 50mm f2, which would you say is the sharpest? Thanks again for this video, have a great week.
Charlie - my gut tells me the 50 might be sharper, but I just went and reviewed some images. That might just be that I shoot the 50 much closer - the 50 has impressive close-focus distance, and I don't shoot the 35 quite as close. So honestly it's probably a wash between the two. Maybe I'll do a video comparing the two? :) I just dotted it down for an idea!
the XF35 f/2 has a problem ; heavy barrel distortion that can ruin many a portrait ; I would recommend either of the other two, especially the XF33 which I don't have. I do have the XF23 f/1.4 LM, the original 23 f/1.4 and the 23 f/2 ; all 3 are stellar
