Differential Fluid Performance in RC vehicles

  • There are typically 3 differentials that can be found on most RC vehicles. The most common differential type in RC is the spider gear type.
    The differential operates differently with different weighted oils. An open differential or one that has no viscous fluid in it will allow all motor or engine power to be routed to the tire with the least resistance. This means all the power potential you have will travel to the wrong wheel. In most RC applications, this is not desired.
    My recommendation based on my personal driving style in light 1/8 and 1/10 RC cars is to use:
    7k cSt in the front differential.
    10k cSt in the center differential
    5k cSt in the rear differential
    Divide by 9 to convert from cSt to wt.

    Thanks for this video. I juts got my daughter a Team Corally Sketer for bashing around with me in my EXB Kraton and my mate with a V5 Kraton and the diffs are so aggressive. On gravel it just spins out even with mild throttle the rear acting like a locker with its 20K fluid causing it to spin out on her. The base set up you suggested is exactly what the Team Corally support said to use. Hopefully these changes will make it way easier to drive.. Keep up the great videos..

    Extremely well delivered video, your competence is awesome, I just purchased the New Arrma Kraton EXB with the Castle 1717 8S 1650KV setup, with a Futaba HPS-CB700 servo and I’ll use a 17th pinion. What Front/Center/Rear Diff oil weights would you start with as well as the shocks front and rear also. I’ll run it as an 8S so it may be a bit heavier than expected. BTW I’m not s huge basher or jumper I just like having the capabilities if I so chose.

    • @RCexplained
      @RCexplained  4 года назад +1

      Hey Cleveland Coleman, I'm not sure what the stock weights used in the new Kraton are. Typically I prefer to have the front and center differential heavier than stock. What I would do in your case is run the Kraton with the stock fluids to see how it performs and adjust from there.
      As for the suspension setup, here too I prefer to have a higher weight oil in the struts with stiffer spring rates. My setups are usually heavier than stock requiring stiffer springs with heavier oil. For jumping, heavier weighted oil and spring rates will help absorb the large jumps otherwise it will be easy to bottom the Kraton out on these larger jumps.

    A video about ball diff vs gear diff might be also interesting! There are many threads about what is the effective/dynamic difference about those, and nobody seems to agree on the why, but tends to agree that ball diff is better at low grip conditions than a gear diff (even with low viscosity silicone oil). Maybe it's the left-right power transfer that it might be inherently faster in a ball diff? or maybe the gear diff oil changes propierties the faster the gears rotate, compared to the ball friction? I don't know why.

    • @RCexplained
      @RCexplained  3 года назад

      I think it would be a challenging video to make. I don't really see any advantage a ball diff has over a gear diff. Maybe it being lighter? There's a reason these are fading away and not really used in anything other then small RC's.

    • @marinearmeni
      @marinearmeni 3 года назад

      @@RCexplained One small advantage is the lack of gear backlash. Since it's just plates pressing on balls there's no play like a gear diff can have. A bigger advantage in my opinion is that when a gear diff starts to unload is becomes easier for it to continue to unload. A ball diff unloads at more or less linear rate. Last advantage I can think of is that ball diffs won't fade or change during a race unless you set it too loose and it slips.

      10-15k weight in the center differential
      5k weight in the rear differential

    Awesome info thanks! I’m not into racing, just have an old truggy that I rip around in the woods, would you say 5000 weight diff oil will be good for front and rear? I don’t have a central diff. I’m not trying to stick it to the ground for ultimate traction, rather like swinging the tail out and drifting round trees in the dirt. Thanks for any info!

    • @RCexplained
      @RCexplained  4 года назад +1

      Hey Eiren, thanks for the comment. 5000 weight in a 1/10 scale truggy can get the rear end loose. However, if looking to be able to swing the rear end out on demand, you may want to go heavier in the rear then in the front. Going with 8000 and up will help you get there. It's just a matter of a trade off between stability and reducing the one wheel peel action.

      Hi RocknRidin, Heavy Duty Grease is still way too thin. Use a minimum of 15-20 K weight fluid in the center differential. If you are looking for even more power sent to the rear end, experiment with 30K or higher.

      Yes it does, it all comes down to the desired stock performance Axial is after. If you don't like it, it's easy to change.

    I've never really gotten in to tuning my diffs and have always been the type to adjust to my RC rather than trying to adjust my RC to me. I've blown a few front tires and have realized that I need to put thicker differential fluid in the center.
    I have a few questions about differential fluid / grease. What is the difference between diff fluid / grease? I'm assuming that diff fluid actually goes inside of the diff, and grease goes in side of the diff box.
    Is diff fluid and diff oil the same thing and are two words that get used interchangeably?
    Also, you mentioned that 7k-8k is a good setup for starters on the center, but yet I've heard of people crazy numbers like 1,000,000 in the center. Why is there such a huge gap with those numbers? I can only assume that there is no universal rating system, where a number directly correlates to the thickness.
    Not every RC manufacture makes their own diff fluid, which means you could be running a Redcat RC with Team Associated, an Arrma with Losi fluid and so on. So with that being said, are differential fluids the same across all brands (similarly to car oil) in terms of the number to viscosity ratings? Or would 8k from one brand be thicker / thinner than another brand?

      This guy is referring to small 1/10 scale buggies on a race track. I use 50k front, 20k rear, 200k middle however my RC is 1/8 Kraton EXB and has a HUGE 6th scale esc/motor combo turning HUGE monster truck tires. With the thicker middle fluid it allows me to wheelie easy.
      The brand of silicone diff fluid is of no worry if it is labeled as 10k it is 10k just like auto oil rating.
      Cheers~

    So lighter fluid equals easier to drive and not as hard on your motor to a point, heavier equals a lot of acceleration but less control and less sharp turning, heavier in front , I have a truggy with no center diff or slipper clutch , do I just re open my diffs they were nearly locked and miserable

    I have a 1/12 scale truck and it isn’t the fastest but I mainly use it in moderate off-roady terrain. It only has front and rear diffs and I’m planning to put 15k in the fronts and 7k in the back. I wanted to know if that seemed logical for what I want to do with my truck.

    You should really try first with factory setup, because oil weight can really change A LOT between cars. Like in a E Revo 2 its about 30k and 20M in the center so with 8k in the center the front tires are going to explode lol. Anyway good video for begginners it's always useful

    @RCexplained this is a good video. I own an Infraction v1 and the new Felony. I have the Infraction dialed correctly where its a 60/100/30 f/c/r and all I do is drift no speed runs and on that one, the front pulls me out the drift in the direction I want to go...it's wonderful. The Felony...I am struggling to get this the same it has the larger tires on the rear and a different diff ratio so front and rear spin differently and more mass in the rear. The felony will swing the rear end around in turn and drift so it over spins. I tried a 60/100/30 on the Felony that was worse...and for me, I never drive it at OEM 10/100/10 setting I changed it right away since Arrma has 1/3 filled diffs. Now I have it at 30/100/60 and that seems to be better for more front pull and control but the rear swings a little still...still not where I want it like the Infraction. Maybe I need to go 20 or 10 in front diff which I may try to get more frontal spin to pull more forward to counteract the rear. Felony is a bit different for newbie any suggestions Sir?

    • @RCexplained
      @RCexplained  3 года назад +1

      Hello, I would suggest trying a thicker weight oil in the front and a thinner weight oil in the rear. As you continue to increase / decrease the oil weightings in the direction as suggested, you will continue to add more power to both of the front wheels and reduce the power going to both of the rear wheels. This will help pull the vehicle through the drift.

    • @ParcoUpchurch
      @ParcoUpchurch 3 года назад

      @@RCexplained Thx sorry for my delay....So I will switch it around since I like how the Infraction pulls on the 60/100/30...based on your suggestion I will do 60/100/30 for the Felony. The Felony has larger 107mm tires in the rear that spin slower than the 100mm tires in the front...so sound like you are saying as I increase in the direction I am going the tire sizing and difference in their spinning is a lower priority and having heavier oil upfront for what I want to achieve (the pulling) is best?

    What do you think is a good starting point for my 1/8 scale buggy with brushless motor power? Right now I have 5k front, 10k center. 3k rear. It's alright but still shreds the front wheels on accel.
    Thinking about going up to 7k front and maybe 15 or 20k center and leave 3k in the rear.

    • @RCexplained
      @RCexplained  3 года назад

      Front sounds good. If you want to get more acceleration 20k in the center will definitely help get you there. What I like doing is experimenting with multiple weights to figure out what works best for me. I also change my weighting as my driving style changes or skills for a specific rc improves.

    What happens when you use million weight in the center, front and rear 10k in a typhon v4 6s?

    • @RCexplained
      @RCexplained  4 года назад +1

      The power distribution front vs rear will be more balanced which means you will be able to get a significant amount of power to the rear wheels. 10k in the front will allow for more stability in the turns but will also allow more power to go to the wheel with less traction. Same idea with the rear however more power going to the wheel with no traction will keep you out of trouble. If it was heavier in the rear, the typhon could be more unstable under heavier acceleration. Diff oil is all about personal preference. I prefer to go light in the rear, heavy in the center and mid weight in the front.

    What if you r drag racing do you want all diffs the same ?

    • @RCexplained
      @RCexplained  4 года назад

      It depends on your setup and how much power deliver you can get from the rear wheels to the ground. It takes a bunch of testing to get to the setup you are comfortable with.
      I typical like to lock the diffs and use throttle management to accelerate in a controlled manner. However, locking the front and center diff while using a lighter weight oil in the rear diff can increase acceleration stability at a potential cost of acceleration. For even further stability under aggressive acceleration at a further cost of acceleration, lighten the fluid in the center diff.
