Seeing as I’m surrounded by some fantastic monitors, namely a collection of 1440p and 4K panels, I thought it’d be a good idea to talk through what your options are at the start of 2024 - should you get a 4K monitor, or is 1440p the better choice? Let’s find out! Now, it should be pretty clear that 4K monitors are just outright better. More pixels means a sharper, more crispy image, and that means you get a generally better image quality. Everyone would love to be running 8K 1000Hz monitors if they could, but sadly we have to snap back to reality. In this often bleak reality, we have a few key constraints, namely the horsepower required to render all those millions of pixels.

Yeah 1440P is the sweet spot for fidelity and performance right now. And when factoring in consoles performance and overall GPU prices it just makes sense for those who can't afford to step up to 4K.
When AMD finally catches up with Nvidia with FSR to DLSS (in upscaling quality) and we have 4080-7900XTX performance in the mid range at $400-500.. I think 4K will be a much more approachable target for a lot of people. We also have Sony's PS5 Pro to look forward to but thats more of a 4K 30 machine; that's rumored to be coming the end of the year.

No matter what 240hz IPS panel you present, IMO an LG 120hz OLED panel will be a better experience due to pixel latency. It feels like 120hz OLED doesnt have the pixel smear that happens with non OLED panels. I would mention you can get a new older LG C series for quite a reasonable price when a new one is released. I do agree that a monitor is half of the experience, having the best hardware with no way to experience it... like being dressed up with nowhere to go.

Im currently on an RTX 3070 and not only wanting to make the bump to a 4k oled monitor but also a new gpu. It seems any gpu outside a 4090 or 7900XTX is really just for 1440p. Im almost thinking Ill wait until next gen on the GPU and get one of the oleds soon.

I’m leaning more towards keeping the M28U because I feel like I may keep it longer since it has HDMI 2.1, but at the same time my brain is telling me maybe the LG is enough for me plus I would save the $160. Any advice?

    • @allendorcoodo9305

Anyways it is the 4k one because 144 at 4k is like a monitor at 1440p with 240 fps and even if you got that your gpu might only get 160 fps so that would be a huge waste. I would recommend the MSI MAG 323UPF 32.0" 3840 x 2160 160 Hz Monitor it is 600 dollars if you really want to get a new monitor but I cannot recommend any new monitor unless you have a 7900 xt or xtx or 4080 or 4090 because any other gpu won’t be able to keep up with the 160 hz at 4k. Because if you have a 144 hz 4k monitor and you usually get around 140 or 150 frames per second it is good if you are also under it you definitely don’t need to buy another monitor. But if you are getting higher than that look for around hz. Remember 4k gets 2x less than 1440p so 144 fps at 4k is equal to around 288 fps at 1440p so when looking for a monitor do that math to see how many hz you should get. Also the panel type is also a big factor all Lowe’s are the best but most expensive even though sometime va panels are ok they are basically just the panels in a tv like the one in your living room or something, they are really dark so if you have to get one make sure it has a very bright display. Ips are the most common and are pretty versatile usually they are pretty good.
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh you have a ps5??? Just use that money to save up for a pc. Because with a ps5 you might not even get 100 fps at 4k. Just stay with your monitor right now it is really good

Thanks for the video, on my end i am running a 32 inch 1440 165hz gsync monitor with a 4090 and really enjoying it. However i am wondering how it would be with a 4k monitor. Also wondering how it would be with an ultrawide 1440p display. I do have my reservations in changing however, because when running cyberpunk at max settings with Ray tracing (no DLSS) the frame rate is 80-90 fps on the 1440p so its still quite taxing on the gpu. Paired it with a ryzen 7800x3d.

If your monitor isn't HDR, I would look into an HDR monitor. Going from 1080p to 4k is definitely noticeable(not as much with supersampling and AI upsampling with DLSS though), but I reckon that 1080P HDR probably looks better than 4k SDR content.

ALLM is not needed on gaming monitors because they are already optimised for lowest latency out of the box, the only thing that that you might want to consider is how good the response time is and how good the overdrive settings are. ALLM is a thing on TVs because they have things like auto super resolution, motion smoothing i.e. rudimentary frame gen and other tech like that. This all adds latency and moreover it is designed to work with video, where you have a predetermined stream of frames and would only add latency in gaming applications. So ALLM then is basically an API for the console to tell the tv to bulk disable all these features when it detects input video signal from the console.

I really liked your video and agree on many of the things you said. Having said this I would like to share my own opinion.
I own a PS5 and have it connected to a 1080p Monitor. But why you'd ask?
Regarding movies, at least 60% of my movies are 480p DVDs and about 39.99% are your average 1080p Blu-ray discs. I also own a very small number of 4K UHD disks like the original Star Wars trilogy. The thing here is that although a 4K Monitor would make my 4K UHD disk look crispy clear, my rather large collection of DVDs would look very washed up.
Regarding gaming on the PS5 now. Every generation of consoles is much more powerful than the previous one. But every generation of AAA titles will always push the consoles hardware to it's very limits. Practically this means that if you want to play theatest AAA games at 60FPS and not called at 30FPS you gotta set the settings to Performance (similar to gaming where one sets FSR to performance and lowers the rendered resolution in order to increase frame rate).
Last but not least, retro games and retro inspired games... How will they look better on a 4K screen given that they have such a low number of colours? Maybe my phrasing here is incorrect but you get the point.
Really respect you as a RUclipsr and I honestly love watching your content. So yeah, dont take this as "criticism" or anything like that 😅😊

How much inch was your 1440p monitor, and how much inch is your 4k monitor? btw: both your monitors have the same 144 hz output. Even if you could make it to 200+fps on the 1440p monitor, the maximum they can show is 144 fps. So If you hit the same 144fps in a game, the smoothness should be the same. If you lock the fps to 144 your gpu won't have to work extra for those ''invisible'' frames. So it will run a bit more quiet/cool because it still has some headroom left.:)

The most important aspect of gaming at 4K has been completely avoided in the video, but I don't blame you as very few people know this, more people will be made aware of as time goes on. But right now modern games are being **PLAGUED** by TAA which **DESTROYS** the image quality so absolutely, you actually NEED a full blown 4K panel to render the game properly and have it look simillar to a 1080p or 1440p panel without TAA.
Remember the old days when games looked clear and crisp on 1080p? Your eyes didn't deteriorate, no, you don't need glasses. It's TAA, so much it destroys the image that a 1080p panel looks like a 540p/720p panel with TAA enabled. And a 4K panel looks like a 1080p/1440p panel. TAA also cannot be disabled and IF you do disable it the game turns into a shimmery disaster as TAA is so crucially implemented in the engine it simply breaks without it.
This is perhaps **THE** most important aspect to discuss when you talk about upgrading to a 4K monitor. TAA is a plague upon games, and it must be rooted out.

    • @noidsuper
      @noidsuper 5 месяцев назад

1440p really would be the sweet spot if TAA weren't so pervasive on most modern games. However, I don't think buying a 4K monitor is necessarily the solution for everyone with lower res screens. DLDSR to upscale to higher resolutions and then downscale it to native res manages to reduce aliasing significantly and for some games with a bad TAA implementation can really clear up the image. It's a bigger performance hog than native 4K (DLSS helps), but its potentially better than having to fork over $500+ for a good 4K monitor just to beat TAA.

TAA does have it's downsides, but IMO it's a massive improvement over what we had in the Xbox 360/PS3 era (either no AA at all or garbage FXAA).
TAA does blur the image, but unlike the previous post process AA solutions (FXAA, MLAA, SMAA), it's at least very effective at combatting all types of aliasing.
MSAA isn't coming back, it simply doesn't work well with modern game engines. It simultaneously has a huge performance hit, and also isn't very effective in deferred rendering engines.
There are some exceptions like RDR2 which have a poor TAA/DLSS implementation, but DLSS looks really good in most games at 1440p IMO.
That said, I do use a 4k monitor as I have little interest in fast paced multi-player games these days. I mostly play single player games and am perfectly happy with 60 fps and want the best fidelity possible.

@@deionsmith6322 yes. In my opinion if you are in position to give extra money, buy 1440p monitor OLED, you will not regret it. But if you want to stay on budget to say under 400-500 which 4k monitors are, buy a normal 2k with 144hz and you will be fine.

For a monitor this size you don't need 4K. You need 4K when you're playing on big screens 45inch +. For 27inch screen 1440p is more than enough.

4k does make a noticable difference at 27 inches. The difference isn't always huge in games, but things like text rendering will be much sharper.
Also, with 4k you can use 200% scaling which works better than fractional scaling (even non-dpi aware apps will look sharp)

I think for desktop use, 1440p is still the most viable option. You need at least a 32'' before 4K even starts to make any sense, but when you start hitting the 40'' range, it's just too large for most uses or desktop spaces. If you really want to game on a huge screen, and the game plays fine with a controller, just play it on a 65'' or 77'' TV in your living room.
1440p on desktop (PC use) allows you to hit higher frame rates easier as well and usually the pixel density is still pretty high on something like a 27''. Was really happy to hear that there will be 27'' 1440p OLED monitors finally. Easier to run and due to the simple fact that they will be OLED, they will still look better than the previous non OLED 4K screens. So no, it's not an "objective fact" that more pixels = better looking. A 4K TN panel looks like dog shit compared to a 1440p OLED screen.
1440p OLED vs 4K OLED is another matter, but again, before 4K even starts to make sense on a desktop monitor you need to be on at least a 32'' screen. Otherwise, you aren't really going to see more of an improvement than what Antialiasing can already give and you're going to be draining resources for no good reason.
Also, frame times and input lag are grossly overrated after a point. While you might notice a difference between a stable 60fps and 120fps, most people won't actually notice much beyond 100fps, and those who claim otherwise are living in placebo land. Those claiming they "need" a 240hz++ screen for gaming, claiming it really makes a difference for them are full of it unless they're some elite "e-sports" player. And everyone knows those kinds of players only play at 720p anyway. 🙂
You realize that 16.66ms at 60fps is one frame right? As long as you are below that, and your frame times are completely stable you aren't going to be able to notice a difference. Most of the human population are not cyborgs. If you spent your time gaming on a 120hz screen for weeks and then suddenly dropped down to 60hz you'd notice a big difference, but that's primarily due to the frame rate, not the input lag. It's been proven time and time again in blind tests that the majority of people can't tell a difference in input lag after a certain threshold and that those who claim that they can are usually lying.

    For 4080 shall i go for 4k 60 hz?

    • @Robin-ou1gg
      @Robin-ou1gg 5 месяцев назад

      NOOOOO NOT 60 HZ 😢
watch some benchmarks of the games you want to play and check the different resolutions and what fps you'll get at them with what settings. if you get below 120 fps at 4k with upscaling and frame gen it is usually better to go for 1440p. there are tons of monitors coming out in 2024 and many great ones are out already, i would recommend the oled 1440p 360hz from alienware as the price is good, if you go with 4k make sure you get AT LEAST 144hz. obviously it depends on your usecases what is best.
      hope this helps :)
