If you check out more videos on her channel, she explains it. There's also a great history of the instrument on Fredrik Knudsen's channel (Down the Rabbit Hole).
The Hurdey Gurdy, It's like a violin but uses a wheel and crank instead of a bow to rub the strings, a key chest instead of manually pressing strings... A really interesting instrument

I came to this channel because I made a Bard in D&D for a game, but I had no idea what instrument they should play. My DM suggested on a whim that he should play a Hurdy Gurdy. I thought that was super cool when I looked it up. Long Story short, the bard went back to his home to save it from his Tyrant uncle. I wanted a song to have for the celebration of his defeat for when my character would have to leave again. I choose this one and I loved every second of it. The campaign didn't work out after a while but I will never forget that character because of this song.
One of the oldest complicated instruments in existence. Obviously sticks and drums and wind instruments are older but for as complicated as it is it’s actually ancient. And has an absolutely beautiful sound.

I'll be on my way
I'm all set to veer away
and I'm all set to go astray
All burdens I will leave ashore
to find what I've been longing for
Don‘t tell anyone
that this night I'll be gone
Greeting the eternal blue
right at the break of dawn
Sailing t‘wards the unknown
with my crew on the sea
And the day that I return
a hero I shall be
I'm all set to veer away
and I'm all set to go astray
All burdens I will leave ashore
to find what I've been longing for
Thanks for this!

"Greeting the eternal blue
Right at the break of morn"
I know that even the lyrics web site says dawn. But every version sounds like morn.

I was right. @1:32
Do one for Over the Hills and Far Away.
@Ken Weser or you could just search google for either the nightwish or the gary moore version, since the lyrics are the same, as the patty gurdy version is a cover of those. :)
Brian David Gilbert's laptop video made me search for what a Hurdy Gurdy is on RUclips. This is the tale of how I reach here...
what laptop, you dont have one?
@@vexvalentine5689 it is kind of a long story...
The same path led me here. Through the vagaries of RUclips our paths now lie linked
@@Thomas.Wright I'm sorry a what?
I cam from this: ruclips.net/video/AdCU75EMqh4/видео.html The Gurdy is my favorite instrument now. XD
I just found this song, 4 years later and Its more than amazing!
I like how the instrument can play from single sound to the combination of the octave per notes.
I like it, it's cool.
Yeah, I've listened to it
again, it still sounds amazing.
Incredibly loud and to the point.
Awesome job too..
And for that, thank you.
You sure have an ear for your instrument.
Most of the harmonies are done by recording melodies separately. The hurdy gurdy isn't quite as capable as, say, the accordion for that stuff.
They both have their own strengths. I wish I could play the accordion.
One of the BEST performance i ever seen, Thank you Miss Patty Gurdy (from Italy)
I love when I discover a little bit more of that infinite thing we call music.
Simply beautiful!
I still come back to this video at least once a month.
dieses lied, diese stimme, dieses instrument ~
sie sitzen in meinem kopf, ich muss es mir immer wieder anhören. ~

Sailing toward the unknown with my crew on the sea.
Patty, the vocal talent in your voice is amazing.
I gat enough of it. Keep making great songs!
Anyone here from Brian David Gilbert because they wrote "hurdy gurdy" into youtube? Also sick song btw
@@Thomas.Wright he he he he he i just searched hurdy gurdgy cause hurdry gurd gdurgur gdurgdgudgdgd
Absolutely!
Watching on my book forged in chrome right now.
Yep
Yes haha!
I tried to find gameplay to "the longing" but honestly this is fine.
the way it happened exactly the opposite to me lmao
Just fall in love with your amazing voice, please don't even think to stop singing! Thx for that feelings.
Wow such a beautiful! Thanks to insomnia, I found this great voice and music
Mayari Arusha insomnia rocks!!!
insomnia sometimes pays off
Normal sleep is nice, no doubt, insomnia does have it's moments however.
Mayari Arusha fucking same dude. Also sea of thieves
Such a beautiful?
I got introduced to the hurdy gurdy in college music history. And this lady made it one of my favorite stringed instruments, next to my guitar!
This is is my favourite European folk song, and I've heard hundreds, if not a thousand.
I literally discovered the instrument 10 minutes ago. I NEED SOMETHING STRONGER THAN A LIKE BUTTON!!!
Smash it with your face :)
unless you watched the polar express in theaters
@@aarontrupiano9328 I found out about the instrument from the game Sea of Thieves.
@@VegetaLF7 SAME :D
But this comment is 9 months old
I am at a loss for words, that instrument looks extremely difficult to play ( I have no clue about how it should work ) but you played so incredibly good. I had to make a huge effort to close my mouth or it would have remained opened in awe for 4 minutes. Still trying to process the beauty of what I have just experienced, much respect and appreciation from Italy.
Thank you for your warm words :)
Ansemthewise94 I agree so like this hit chick plays Viking music mixed with folk music it's very cool
here is a performance with an open hurdy gurdy: ruclips.net/video/ypuaJLHK_LQ/видео.html
To me it looks like a very easy to play instrument :) Turn the wheel and press the buttons... :)
it's a celtic instrument
She struck gold with this song man. It hits so hard!
Definitely one of the best chorus's ive ever heard.
The moment you realize all of the instrumental sounds are coming from Patty's Hurdy Gurdy... and she's singing too!
Wow instrument make noise *cave man noise
@@ms.kittycat599 They were commenting on the variety of sounds that come from one instrument. What do you call it when a smart ass isn't smart?
I'm sorry, I do not know English well ... I still want to write that it's a beautiful song and an amazing musical instrument ... I really like it ... Thank you for the beautiful experience and wish me the most songs.
If it helps you, Patty is German, she also speaks English.
Your English is fine my friend, practice is the key. Keep up the good work ^_^
I don't really see any problems with your english.
You wright better English than me! Lol

I keep coming back to listen to the longing, the range of expression blows my mind, in a good way.

Agreed
Imagine duo with Michalina Malisz on two hurdy gurdy's!

No hate towards the new members at all, they're also great...
*Imagine duo with Michalina Malisz on two hurdy gurdy's!*
I did. Now I'm in the hospital with a condition called "permanent orgasm".
don't you mean permanent eargasm
Here's the lyrics:
I've seen many men wandering
All strong and brave and keen
Seen them growing into rulers
But I long for the sea
Heard a ship came from North
To our harbor for a day
And before misfortune knows
I'll be on my way
I'm all set to veer away
And I'm all set to go astray
All burdens I will leave ashore
To find what I've been longing for
Don't tell anyone
That this night I'll be gone
Greeting the eternal blue
Right at the break of dawn
Sailing t'wards the unknown
With my crew on the sea
And the day that I return
A hero I shall be
I'm all set to veer away
And I'm all set to go astray
All burdens I will leave ashore
To find what I've been longing for

Beautiful face, beautiful voice. I love listening to your stuff, Patty.
The song that you need to see in ever epic-music-playlist-of-all-time
Just recently discovered you, Patty, and I'm totally in love now. I had never heard of the hurdy gurdy before, but it is now my favorite instrument, thanks to you!
Fantastic instrument
Hurdy Gurdy = medieval analogue keytar.
cygil1
Yes
Its more of a mechanical violin 🤷
@@Yes-gu2wn Technically, but it plays much more like a keytar than a violin. Well, I assume, I've never been able to afford one myself.
Me: I wanna play a bard. My DM: okay. Me: my instrument will be a Hurdy Gurdy. My DM: the fuck is that? Me: links this video. DM: very well, carry on.
yo a bard with this instrument would be awesome!
Bard is best class in 5.0. Way too much fun. Nothing like fucking with DM with your reckless moves and unexpected charisma rolls.
My Bard has been using a hurdy gurdy for sessions!
i actually found this while telling my dm what a hurdy gurdy is! Im new to dnd and he was helping me make my character.
And then you whip out this: ruclips.net/video/66IM7Pb6JYc/видео.html
Any plans to come to the USA?
I'm glad BDG showed this beautiful instrument to the ones that didn't know it yet.
I see a bunch of people talking about BDG here, but I found her from a folksy sounding playlist someone else had made, and now I wanna know which BDG video talks about a hurdy gurdy.
@@LadyLee13 Look at his video "have you seen my laptop" you will see how we ended up here :)
@@xDari14 Thank.
Love the sound of that instrument!! I don’t know what it is but it stirs the soul. Beautiful woman beautiful music! Thank you for making a day so much better.
If you check out more videos on her channel, she explains it. There's also a great history of the instrument on Fredrik Knudsen's channel (Down the Rabbit Hole).
Incredible.
missclicked on this video, no regret, just made my day randomly
Why am I just discovering this now? This is incredible!
What is this????
I love it!
I'm in love!
Seriously!
It sounds so cool.
Darren Diaz oh hi mark
The Hurdey Gurdy, It's like a violin but uses a wheel and crank instead of a bow to rub the strings, a key chest instead of manually pressing strings...
A really interesting instrument
I mostly listen to this when im quite drunk. Patty, your voice is ...emotionally powerful. Your songs are moving. Youre a talented human, and i respect you more than you realize
I don't know what I just stumbled upon, but holy hell I need more of it!
I came here just because her instrument is something Ive never seen before.
Im not disappointed.
Der Wikipedia zu urteilen bist du Deutsche. Ich hab mir das eh schon gedacht. Wunderbar, was du tust, wie du singst, wie du spielst. Einmalig. Weiter so. Ich liebe das.
Lovely, talented, and a beautiful accent. She’s the whole package
Her and CDW OML
Never knew that this instrument even existed
The Hurdy Gurdy needs to be used in more music and songs!!
heard that shit's been used since the 9th century
One of the oldest complicated instruments in existence. Obviously sticks and drums and wind instruments are older but for as complicated as it is it’s actually ancient. And has an absolutely beautiful sound.
@@buckbundy8642 and to think metal riffs sound great on them too o_O
