    This instrument is called "hurdy gurdy" and has its roots in the medieval times. It works like a mechanical violin with a wheel bow, that can play bass, melody and rhythm all at once. This song is recorded using ONLY the hurdy gurdy.

      Agreed! We need more solo hurdy gurdy music. I think the hurdy gurdy having a stupid name has inhibited its potential popularity quite a bit, because it sounds awesome.

    • @DennisGr
      @DennisGr 4 года назад +15

      the percussive clacking sound of the keys is one of the distinct characteristics by which you can clearly identify the sound of a hurdy gurdy.

      🤐

    • @peterhormell1511
      @peterhormell1511 3 года назад +2

      That percussive clicking noise is actually not from the keys or the keyboard, but intentionally done by lifting the main string cover and rapping it sharply against the fame of the hurdy gurdy. You can see it in this video of Guilhem Desq!
      BTW, I love Patty’s H/G playing and her lovely voice! 💚

    • @Hodoss
      @Hodoss 3 года назад +8

      @@peterhormell1511 You can make percussions by tapping the instrument and clapping the string cover, but there is also the inherent click-clack of the keys.
      Many such medieval instruments have "parasitic noises", which add to their rustic charm.

      It is because of her extensive piano experience, which translates very well to the hurdy gurdy. I play the violin, cello, viola de gamba, jouhikko, and tagelharpa, but I am afraid to start the hurdy gurdy because skill with bowed instruments does not translate to keyed instruments. *sigh*

      Even still, the names of certain keys from the keyboard do translate to the Hurdy Gurdy. Learning one would not be too difficult. Kind of like learning Spanish. English and Spanish share similarities but are not exact. Learning one to the other would not be an extreme...Like learning Russian..If you only speak English.

      You'd probably do better to order one from an established maker and work overtime for 2 or 3 years to raise the money. That's probably how long it would take you to produce a gurdy that worked properly, and it would cut out a lot of the hassle - apart from which you'd have the after sales service thrown in.
      The hurdy gurdy is a complex and frustrating instrument to tangle with and many instruments are unstable. They'll go out of tune (and stay out of tune) if the weather's too dry, or too damp, too hot or too cold, or if the strings are too old or too new. Knowing how much rosin to put on the wheel and how to adjust tangents and cotton the strings and adjust string pressure against the wheel is an occult art. It's like looking after an ornery cat with Alzheimer's.

    • @hurdygurdy9606
      @hurdygurdy9606 7 лет назад +2

      Not exactly true. It is possible to make your own instrument very easily with the cheapest of materials (plywood, drillrods, pine,etc) while making sound quality a priority. A symphonie takes very little materials, and can be easily made to sound great.

      I was first introduced to the existence of the Hurdy Gurdy thanks to sea of thieves! I began looking around for hurdy gurdy music immediately but most of the music is kinda boring... then I came across Patty gurdy and this amazing song! The way she plays the Hurdy Gurdy is so different and much more amazing from anything I’ve heard before! I am now picking up piano simply so I can get a head start on the Hurdy Gurdy as soon as I can afford one! Mark my words, Patty Gurdy will revolutionize the Hurdy Gurdy and I’m so glad to have found her channel during a somewhat early phase!
