I'm fine with Rathian being able to poison without a tail, since the reduced range is reward enough, and shes weak enough that without poison she feels overly gimped. However I wouldn't mind if secering a tail prevented Rathian from poisoning, but not other versions since it would set them apart more
Thing about Rathian's tail is that its the spikes at the very end that poison you. Severing the tail removes them. So when World made that change everyone was like "well that makes so much sense" and then Rise reverted it lol.
@@HeavyWings I agree, it doesn't make logical sense for the tail to still be able to poison you once sliced off. Perhaps they could increase the blugeoning damage or some other aspect. I don't know, I'm just a bit of a stickler for that vague kind of realism. Make it so that you can break Rathalos' claws if you're so inclined.
Rathian and garuga shouldn’t be able to poison you with their tail cut off, rathalos or rathian shouldn’t be able to fly perfectly with holes in both their wings. I don’t care if they’re easier after breaking those parts, because THATS THE POINT! If it’s such a balance concern capcom can just make them harder to break
But that doesn't really make much sense from a lore perspective. The tail is where the poison comes from, why would she still be able to do it if she didn't have the tail? Aditionally, it also teaches new players that breaking and severing parts can reduce the annoying parts of monster's fights, a very imortant lesson for a growing hunter.
My biggest problem with that is that with it reverts back to breaking part being mostly a way to gain material and work as a lifebar of sorts , but I find it way more interesting when breaking parts has an actual effect on the monster outside of reduced range for tail flips . Sure we have some like barioth or lagiacrus that do get weaker from part breaks but I think there is not enough in the game . While we're at it they can do the oposit too with some part breaks basically making some of the monsters attack worst to deal with forcing the player to break parts more strategicaly , but I'm just spitballing .
Like you said , rathian is a great mid-game monster , its not too crazy but you have to understand the fundamentals of the game to fight her and adapt to some of its quirk . But the other thing that make it a great mid game test is that she tests you on your way to adapt to both ailments and elemental blights . Early game monster usually only have one ailment or element but rathian teaches you to be more versatile and be ready for more than one probem per hunt .
I've always preferred Rathian over Rathalos. Something I find a little interesting is that in first and second gen, they were more or less the same difficulty with Rathian being a bit harder if anything, but now she's definitely weaker. Kinda wish they were on the same level again though.
@Rathalomaniac I haven't gotten that far in Freedom Unite, the only quests of them I've seen have been in the same rank. But in terms of the fights themselves I'd say Rathian was still harder.
Rathian and Rathalos are the perfect exemple of à well balanced dificulty, there attacks can be punishing if you re not careful but not à big deal if you stay constantly moving and you attack at the right moment( and this is the same for all their rivals like seregios, tigrex or astalos)They are neither too easy nor too hard . Unless you spam flash pods or use the op insect glaive
Rathian has a very special place in my heart and rates as one of my top favorite monsters because she taught me to understand and appreciate the nuance and attention to detail that's a staple of this franchise. I played through the base game once before, but it was on my second playthrough that I learned something about Rathian which I then applied to the whole series and is responsible for my love of Monster Hunter. I honestly don't remember when exactly it clicked, but at a certain point I started to notice just how telegraphed her tail flip was. I was getting better and better at positioning myself to punish the attack and eventually started looking for similar openings with her other moves - always targeting the tail. Rathian built up a lot of confidence for me, and I would practice on her a lot because I started to learn her moveset very intimately. It made me realize that this level of detail & fight design extends to every monster in the franchise to some extent, and the minute I realized that it went beyond just 'kill big monsters' I fell in love. Rathian's honestly a pretty easy monster because of how telegraphed so many of her attacks are. The biggest issue is being unprepared for her poison, or getting too aggressive and being punished by her charge attacks. However, she's still one of my favorites and that's an easy position for her to hold because Pink, Gold, & Dreadqueen bring so much to the table to spice up what is essentially a 'beginner' fight. And, since she's in every game, she's a very reliable training dummy whenever I want to experiment with a new weapon or try to practice something in particular. She's just a monster of pure nostalgia & comfort for me.

I love to see a channel that only talks about Monster Hunter. I've been a fan for like 10 years even if I'm only 21 lol
That moment when you thought cutting the tail removed the poisoning effect in all games because it's been too long since you've been hit by a backflip with the tail cut off 😅 While Rathian didn't gain much in terms of new moves in 4 (Ultimate), I still feel she's very different from 3rd gen, much more mobile. But maybe that's just my imagination...
Ah yes Rathians most power move..."Run forward" Also interesting enough Dreadqueens Charge Fireball attack was given to Apex Rathalos in Rise which tbh I think it fits him better anyway.
Part breaks on certain monsters barely have an affect anymore in Rise in hampering in some of the monster's moves when compared in World and some of previous games. Those that come specifically to mind are Rathian as you mentioned which can still poison you with her nub of a tail when its cut off. Wroggi's spitting range isn't hampered anymore when you break it throats sack. Rathalos still flies perfectly fine when you breaks it wings even when not in enraged. It only has trouble flying when its bound by silk after a Wyvern Ride Launch. Royal Ludroth seems to not dry up as fast when its sponge mane is broken.
@@marcusaaronliaogo9158 but their gimmicks don't get removed. Their attacks get weakened. You weaken it greatest strength in order to make them an easier target. Rathian can still back flip but she less reach and should not be able to poison you anymore. In W:I Rathalos can still fly when its wings were broken, but would have trouble taking flight in battle when it was not enraged or was it was exausted. I am alright with Apex Rathalos not having that mechanic. In 3U and Portable 3rd breaking Great Wroggi's poison sack severely nerfed the power and range of its poison spitting attack and, I if I remember correctly, also made it so that it couldn't summon Wroggis to help anymore similar to breaking a Blangonga's fangs. Breaking Royal Ludroth's mane was a way to make it get tired quicker while it was on land in order to exploit it before it went back under water or bathed in a waterfall.
I always thought basic rathian was a little too easy and simple, so my favorite has to go to apex/dreadqueen and gold. Gold in iceborne is very hectic and pretty fun, in genu I have quite a few memorable hunts against her. Apex rathian is one of my favorite Apexs, I like the toxic purple/pinkish colour design, and it's just an evolved version of basic rathian, telegraphed but punishing moves makes for a very satisfying hunt. Great analysis video btw!
While she may be annoying to a lot of people, especially her stronger variants which I actually do agree can be annoying; I think Rathian is a perfect mid-tier Monster, as you said. Her basic design and fight mechanics allow her to work in any game's combat style, so she serves as a great test of whether you've come to grips with the new mechanics yet depending on how smooth the fight goes, and in that regard I think she's a much more solid "foundation monster" than Rathalos as far as feeling like the connecting tissue between games (not that Rathalos isn't more deserving of being in every game, rather he's had more changes throughout the years and lacks consistency and familiarity). Honestly my only real issue with her being in every game is that a lot of her weapon designs aren't an aesthetic I personally vibe with, and her armor especially is boring as shit; but obviously as long as I'm not playing world I can just use anything and everything else.
Fun fact Rathian is the only monster to originally be able to be decapitated but this was changed before MH1's release. She still has the hit box thing near her head and neck for it and someone was trying to mod it back in for MHW but I think they abandoned that project.
God Rathian is probably my favorite monster. She's absolutely meant to be a mid-tier monster and I actually adore that, there's enough challenge to where it doesn't feel unfair and enough leeway to test new things out. Whenever I wanna test a new weapon or try a different weapon class I go to Rathian.
Tbh as much as it would take away from the apex fight I hope Rathian ends up keeping some form of the toxic clouds, her swinging her tail around and dropping scales of AoE poison is really fun and makes environmental awareness against her so huge
4:50 actually its a late Highrank Move. Dreadqueen gains it at about Level 8. Also, the Fireballs Rathian spits out can leave Fire on the Ground. Thats not realy something any other Firemonster does, except Lunastra. My Favorit is Gold Rathian. Rathian is a nice Fight, but its a very old Monster and it shows, its very predictable and exploitable, and as such a bit boring and easy, sometimes. Goldian gives her so much aggression and so many different ways of comboing into her Attack it turns the entire Pacing of the Hunt upside down.
I never gave much credit to Rathian, but trying to get an a rank in her arena quest in World with Lance really made me love the fight and I find it extremely satisfying
a bit of a history lesson, rathian was the first monster capcom designed and the original logo is her, not the flagship of that game, if you look closely you can see her shin spike as evidence of this. this is supposedly do to them designing her and deciding later that hee being the classic fantasy wyvern wasn't unique enough to act as the poster child of the game so they mae rathalos to alter her design to something more unique and marketable. i like how in mhw pink rathain's tail will have you bounce unless you hit the tip, before clutch claw existed, when you try to cut it off. it's minor but a nice touch to punish people that want to remove it as fast as possible but rewarding precision. i also love the altered back flip animations pink and gold rathain got later on that are in MHW. oh the tail cut removing the poison was MHW exclusive? bit conflicted on that, i want the tail cut to be more rewarding but it not totally neutering the fight is also nice. nah, i swear rathalos was in MH3, they had the scene with him and lagiacrus meeting as part of the story and marketing. wait, what? you said only rathian appeared, implying rathalos was left out, then you admitted that he was also in. um the fuck?
I find her underrated and I kind of like her more than Rathalos in design, I think itd be interesting if there could be a flip in the mold and make a subspecies where the female is stronger. Like im thinking Raging Brachydios level.
I agree with the point made about the tail. Kind of feels pointless to even attempt part breaks if those don't affect the fight. It also makes no damn sense for her to poison you without a tail
Yeah my favorite monster ! I love World's changes to Rathian, both design wise and the tail cut part. Gold Rathian I find much more dangerous than any Rathalos variant for some reason

I don't think they reverted rathians backflip change. Rise was being developed at basically the same time as world and rathian was probably one of the first monsters programed into the game so they probably just didn't make the change to begin with since they still weren't sure how well world would do its the same reason that rise was originally going to have loading zones like the previous games but because world did really well and they changed it to world more open style
I feel like they should do more with rathian have Rathalos take the back seat and give his wife the spotlight for once make bass rathian an actual threat on par with Rathalos just do something with her

I'm fine with Rathian keeping poison even with her tail cut off I can imagine some poison drooping out and you decrease her range with the attack not like i'm ever getting hit by it anyways.
Next week I shall be releasing a big video on the Apex Monsters, so look out for that!
Heavy Wings, with all do respect is the Apex Monster not lesser Deviants ?
Yes!!!
Apexes from rise were probably made during 2020, that kinda explains why they are a bit undercooked.

I'm fine with Rathian keeping poison even with her tail cut off I can imagine some poison drooping out and you decrease her range with the attack not like i'm ever getting hit by it anyways.
