- It's the knife sharpener that can do it all, turning dull knives into cutting machines. Inside Edition went to the Urbani Truffle Kitchen in New York City with Chef Celeste Rogers, the winner of Food Network’s cooking competition ‘Chopped,’ to put a Bavarian Edge to the test. In its commercial, with two quick flicks of the wrist, a pineapple is sliced up. For the first couple of tests, it seemed to work, but once we got into some of the more outrageous tests, it didn’t live up to the hype. #InsideEdition

It does not matter what type of sharpener you've got. What matters is the quality of the blade.

1:55 in the commercial they thawed the meat a little bit (like almost everyone does) but the meat that Inside Edition brung out is frozen rock solid.
The Bavarian edge uses tungsten carbide inserts to rapidly strip metal from the knife. It works but is very aggressive and will greatly reduce the longevity of the knife. The credit card test actually should work as well. It is much easier to remove plastic than metal to create an edge. You will be able to get a couple of cuts out of the plastic but it won’t last long after that as it doesn’t have the hardness needed to sustain an edge.

50+ years in the food industry. Back in the 80's I found the ideal sharpener in the UK. Light, cheap, easily cleaned plus super sharp edge on any knife. Any quality metal .The 90's came around and it walked. I bought several very similar sharpeners but none came anywhere as close. I saw the Bavarian and immediately bought one. It was possibly a cheap knock off (I live and work in the Philippines where nigh on everything is rubbish), anyway, within 2 days I'd binned it. I'll continue looking for my favourite. You've all seen them , 3 or 4 wheels sitting on the end of a handle which you draw the blade through. Possibly the one I had was just the one off perfection?

To be fair, in the commercial, they only used the non-razor side of the butter knife, not the razor side. So it might look like the chef is holding it upside down.

Always check the company before buying.

I'm never going to need that sharpener, but this review bugs me.
They didn't sharpen more than 2 swipes, they probly used walmart knives, dude in the commercial had more arm strength and the meat wasnt the same.
I mean, in the commercial they did 3 swipes in it and said it was "razor sharp". Which is stupidly false. I agree, their testing was far from perfect. But this product is some ass, ive used it. It doesnt do all that much. Learn the proper way to sharpen a knife and youll get 100 times the result. This thing couldnt get a butter knife to be able to shave hair, actually knife sharpening with a whetstone can quite easily do just that. Ive done that with a butter knife. Warning though, if someone puts that butter knife back in with the other ones, youre in for a surprise.
For the frozen meat it probably didn’t work because the knife was backwards

I worked at a poultry plant and I had to use these same type of sharpeners. Not the exact brand but the style. They definitely work.

Cute cat Maham you'd think a professional chef that won a high-expectation cooking game would know which way to face it.
I have to wonder if they were given instructions on how to use this sharpener. When the knife is run through the unit with the knife tip angled upwards it is Honing the knife, not sharpening it. To Sharpen the knife the tip needs to be angled downward when it is run through the unit. Also if the knife is held level to the unit when passed through it is polishing the knife's edge. I have used the Brod and Taylor model and it has worked well. They even put the instructions for use on the bottom of the unit.
