I just brought a 2021 Toyota fortuner gxl and i am EXTREMELY impressed we LOVE it. I got it from Brisbane and drove it back up home to cairns and it was incredible, very very smooth ride and I can’t wait to take it off road

The whole point of the Fortuner is to be tough and not another mazda soft roader, all proper 4x4 has a ladder frame dont complain if the vehicle is not for your purpose, people who needs a tough suv 7 seater this is for you, not for city slicker who needs a pansy soft car
WRONG!!! prado and lc200 are both LADDER CHASIS too, and they are NOT stiff! the fortuner counterparts have made their way to have better suspension but STILL LADDER FRAME especially pajero sport! just accept the fact that fortuner has the least love from toyota (decades have past and they still havent improved the suspension for the love of gods)

I actually like the sweeping line towards the rear end of the car. Great for off-roading and towing with its high ground clearance. I don’t mind the firm ride at all. Spacious, good looking, great engine, safety features, etc. This SUV can actually go real off road where others like Sorento can’t! They are called SUVs but their ground clearance is minimal. It’s a great allrounder. Not popular therefore you won’t see too many on the road ad nausea. With a bull bar and roof rack and tow bar it becomes a great touring vehicle!
Before I would consider the Fortuner I need to know if Toyota has properly sorted out the DPF problem which has plagued their diesels for years.I have read that the Pajero Sport diesel has no such problem so no matter how good Fortuner may be in other respects,Pajero Sport is at the top of my list,until such time it is clear that Toyota has resolved the DPF issue.I have read a lot about it recently and I remain unconvinced that it has been.I hope someone can persuade me differently.

With No MUX and Pajero sport available in my country (Pakistan) Fortuner is definitely the sole player in the market and it does exceptionally well here. So much so that slightly used cars are sold at a higher than brand new car’s price because there is months of waiting on new ones ! The top spec fortuner is 15000 USD more then the top spec Hilux.
The Fortuner has always been a great car, i just don't understand how you guys keep complaining about the 3rd row Seats... I just removed mine completely, then they aren't in the way and you almost never need them in any case. Its a really good vehicle for touring. I try to take mine out every weekend when i can! :)
Agree. I took the 3rd row seats out of my 2001 Prado 3 years ago to cart a big boxy load. They haven't been back. Saves 40kg and better visibility. Of course, will have to put them back in when I ever sell it to be compliant.
These are very popular in SE Asia (Vietnam/Thailand) as they are ideal during monsoon season when the roads get flooded due to poor infrastructure. High ground clearance etc.

Basically here in the Philippines, the Fortuner is the best selling SUV while the Innova and Hilux are the best selling MPV and pickup respectively last year. The PH and VN roads are very similar though.
definitely, there's some 600-800$ suspension upgrades in my country that make the fortuner ride softly, although at the expense of cornering speed since its gonna be wallowy

I live in Thailand where the Toyota Hilux and Toyota Fortuner are manufactured for the Australian market. I only need 4 seats; maybe 5 seats so 7 seats is not necessary. There is a massive difference in priice between the Hilux and Fortuner so it makes sense to buy the Hilux and keep luggage in plastic boxes or even a caddy for carrying things.

Tossing up between a Fortuner and Prado. Hopefully the Tuner is a good tow vehicle as I will be towing a mid size caravan on the big lap. I am leaning towards the Tuner as it seems to be more of a tuff vehicle than the prado and much less price. Plenty of time as I need to order and wait wait wait for delivery.
Of course it isn't as smooth, is a ute frame. It's mean to be tougher. I looked at this and other similar SUVs and several utes and settled on the Hilux which has better room. I'm also tall and love the ride position and steering.
One thing I found that was left out is ground clearance. What is the ground clearance and entry exit angles. Sorry if this was asked already there were a lot of comments
The Fortuner looks better and more powerful now compared to the pre-updated model. Luckily it didn't recieved a sunroof as it would increase the weight of the vehicle and considering it is a heavy vehicle.
Soooooooooo old school, and those rear side folding seats are sooooooooo annoying. The interior is seriously lacking in this modern age. In isolation not a bad vehicle but put it up against the competition and then let’s see how well it does......
Yes, the rear seats can be removed, but not easily. There are some RUclips videos that show how. A much better idea would have been if Toyota offered them as a option as per Mitsubishi and the Pajero Sport.

Tight race between this and Pajero Sport. We need these for space for beach and kayak gear more than off-road and don’t like the utes for their tighter rear seats and constrained cabin space. Much closer comparison to a PS now that the Fortuner has Apple car play. I like the additional power, but where is the hybrid? Sliding rear seat are great too. I don’t like the 10k service intervals.
The only downside to a Fortuner is the rear extra seats, and the rigid suspension. I would pick it any day over any other toyota out there. A tough, nice, reliable SUV. I rate it 90/10
Base model means less features, no push start, no climate control, no power tailgate, etc... It is fine if the base model still uses the old traditional key.
I think you have imported this car from india or other country because driving staring is on the right side nd in western countries staring is on left side??
Was going to buy one because a wagon hilux was perfect but the deal breaker was the third row seats; they are a nuisance. Can’t believe they didn’t provide a 5 seat option. Didn’t want the hassle to take them out and risk compliance plus have to store them and for 10 years or so. Ah well.
Great review I have a 2017 GXL Fortuner and love it. It is more expensive that the MUX or Pajero Sport but nothing g beats a Toyota for reliability and resale value. The Fortuner is a brilliant car. I have actually just ordered a new fortuner Crusade due for delivery mid October and the trade in on the 2017 was fantastic
One advice for all car buyers: Don't spend such awful lot of money on a car. Instead invest it in buying real estate (flat). Invest in a home. That will give you the returns. You will be happy and prosperous by this investment ☺️👍
I wish to respectfully disagree regarding your sentiments about power tailgates, I love being able to pull up at places and deploy the dog out the back at the push of a button.

It's not the ladder frame chassis that makes the ride stiff over bumps.
Adding a quality suspension lift can usually make it ride much better than factory

Agree, the rear 1/3 of the Pajero Sport is way uglier
I've heard they come out 40-42 psi in the tyres out of factory which is very high, drop it to 32-34 psi and have far better ride comfort

I have a 2017 GXL Fortuner and love it. It is more expensive that the MUX or Pajero Sport but nothing g beats a Toyota for reliability and resale value.
The Fortuner is a brilliant car.
I have actually just ordered a new fortuner Crusade due for delivery mid October and the trade in on the 2017 was fantastic
I've said to so many Nissan Mitsubishi owners over the years. Mine has one thing you'll never have. A Toyota badge.
One advice for all car buyers: Don't spend such awful lot of money on a car. Instead invest it in buying real estate (flat). Invest in a home. That will give you the returns. You will be happy and prosperous by this investment ☺️👍

I wish to respectfully disagree regarding your sentiments about power tailgates, I love being able to pull up at places and deploy the dog out the back at the push of a button.
"deploy the dog out the back". Hilarious. Good for a neighbour you don't like. Reminds me of "two and a half men - release the dogs".
Or, you could be like James Bond deploying an oil slick when being chased by bad guys. Open the tailgate and the dog "deploys" all over the bad guys' windscreen.
Thanks again Richard for a very entertaining review , as you always do . As a Toyota lover, I am looking at trading my old Lexus 250 for a Hilux/Fortuna . In your opinion, and I do not have a young family , which would you choose as a daily driver/ get away all rounder ? :)
