    This was REALLY a good video!!!
    I originally stopped by briefly to see what the buzz was about this pedal and ended up watching the entire thing!
    Tremendous playing BTW!!!
    I'm a Yamaha Motif XF player/owner and the fine people on the motifator website have had a lot to say regarding this pedal recently and the lack of a good B3 sound within the mMotif itself.
    A lot of people consider this to be the answer to their prayers and I now see why...!
    This is definitely going to be on my short list for the studio!
    Once again, thanks for the fine demo and playing!
    Hope to see/hear more!
    Regards

      Hey Nick, what power supply problems have your experienced?

    • @nickbobaymusic8691
      @nickbobaymusic8691 7 лет назад

      The problem I have ran into has been noise. It seems that under certain circumstances I get a great deal of noise. It tends to be a very high pitched digital sounding noise and it is fairly unpredictable when it happens or what causes it. Sometimes, If I just unplug and plug it back in, its fine. There are some gigs where it is perfectly quiet and others where it really acts up. I have considered getting a power conditioner for my rig.

    • @JimAlfredson
      @JimAlfredson  7 лет назад

      Interesting. I've only had that happen once and the same thing resolved it (rebooting via unplugging and plugging it back in). I wonder if the PSU you have is faulty? Or under powered? Or not stable enough for certain situations?
      I always travel with a line conditioner for my digital gear, including my SK2. Everything these days uses switch-mode power supplies which can be very susceptible to AC line problems. I use a TrippLite LC1200. The one time I forgot it, I played an outdoor patio gig with my SK2 and the power was so bad (low AC voltage on the patio) that it fried my PSU. Never again!

    • @nickbobaymusic8691
      @nickbobaymusic8691 7 лет назад

      Yes, I figured I need to get a conditioner, I have just been putting it off. I actually have the original PSU as well as an aftermarket that was suggested in a forum as a more stable option for the Vent. Both give me the same result.
      I will look into the TrippLite LC1200. Does it help with dirty/noisy power situations? Many of the venues I play at have pretty nasty power...

    • @JimAlfredson
      @JimAlfredson  7 лет назад +1

      Yes, the TrippLite helps a lot. I never leave home without it.
      You may want to make sure the PSU connector is mating properly with the jack on the Ventilator. Maybe it's loose and thus not getting a solid connection?

      Yes, after using a 147 for nearly 20 years, I too was bit skeptical. But, I purchased the "original" Vent 3 years ago and immediately SOLD the Leslie. I was able to take the cash from the sell and purchase the Vent + 2 monitors.
      The only way I have found to maintain the "feel" of the sound-motion and doppler effect being thrown around the proximity of my keyboard setup as well as around the room is to religiously run the Vent in Stereo.
      For my keyboard monitors, I'm running in stereo using (2) QSC K10's positioned L/R on either side of me. Although the low-end is not exceptionally good on the QSC' by themselves, I can easily hear/feel the hugeness of the organ coming from the FOH subs.

    Why do you need the Neo Vent with these modern organs? Isn’t the built in rotary affect just as good and easier to use?

  • @justdandavies
    @justdandavies 9 лет назад

    Jim you would be great at giving some organ tuition, mayby with a bit of jazz theory thrown in. the ideal lesley software would be something that actually shows the models in question with the mic placements, a lot of us newbies just dont know whay were really looking for for an authentic 50's leslie or 60's leslie. i guess they probably do, but in a VST. Part of me wishes I held out of buying the SK2, and bought the XKC1, but then the immidiacy I get with the SK2 is great. That said, the build quality of the SK2 is rather poor in my oppinion, sent it back to my dealer twice for repairs of velocity broken keys and the screws fell out. It feels very clangy to play as if the 2nd manual really shouldn't be there - as if it was an after thought to just glue a 2nd midi keyboard on the SK1 shell. Never did see any of them limited edition SK2's about??

    I have a Hammond XB1 and I'am very unhappy with the Leslie
    effect onboard.
    I tested also the Neo Vent I but this was also not the solution for me ...
    Now I think the Neo Vent II is a really good ability ... exspecially the
    fine tuning of the Leslie speed you explained here very well make me curious.
    Have a good time!

    I’m just wondering...in all the Leslie sim demos, the pedal is always on the keyboard. Is that just for demo purposes? It seems to me you’d want the pedal on the floor and free up the hands?

      It depends if one wants to make many knob adjustments...I expect once the fav settings are found, this pedal would go on the floor.
      Remember, many Hammonds had hand switching (half moon switch), because people played foot pedals too!
      But they were placed closer to our left hand.
      cheers

    Jim I love the videos! Jim I have a Roland Atelier that I really like and gets some really good organ sounds and I am wanting to add some distortion without it sounding lousy. I have tried some distortion pedals and I am leaning toward purchasing the ventilator. Any thoughts on what may be the best?

    • @JimAlfredson
      @JimAlfredson  6 месяцев назад

      The overdrive in the Ventilator is so good. It sounds like tube overdrive from a Leslie. They do make a pedal that just has the overdrive in it. I'm not familiar with the Atelier so I can't comment on how good it's rotary simulation is, but it's really hard to beat the Ventilator in that department.

    don,t seem to have any phasing of the sound on slow Leslie, the animated horn on a Leslie turning in the four corners of a wooden cabinet causes a phase shift in the sound , this in my mined is a massive and overlooked effect on most Leslie sim's, if any of you reading this can get your hands on a oberhiem 32 squared clone configured for stereo ,and listen to how its done you will see were i'm coming form

  • @ChristianSchonbergerMusic
    @ChristianSchonbergerMusic 9 лет назад

    Well I got the original Vent and it sounds great with my (old) customized (Mullard tubes and tweaking) XK-3. I don't use it in the studio. I have an inexpensive 1982 Elkatone rotary speaker (solid state - I use the overdrive of the original Vernt - stop and guitar mode by simply inserting a headphone jack adaptor - and I have that creamy overdrive) which very closely emulates the far more complex tone of a real Leslie speaker. I am talking about that slightly dirty but prescious, throaty sound, that shimmering, pumping and that "grinding". I love your playing and your knowledge but the gear (XK-1 + Vent II) still sounds clearly like a hammond clone. It's too simplified, too clean, too synthetic. It lacks the complexity of the analog circuits, the air, the "tumbling" tonewheels, the truly breathy leakage (it's there, especially when you push-in the upper drawbars so it isn't drowned out, but somehow it sounds like what it is: an emulation). As I said: great playing, great demo, nice sim - soesn't sound like a vintage console Hammond it tries to emulate - not at all. I am age 53 and I grew up with Hammonds all around - there is a distinctive quality which very likely still is too complex to emulate - or it evades the guys trying...... your playing rem ains impeccable though! Thanks for uploading.

    Jim, when you play that lovely melody from 10:06 for us RUclips watchers, are we hearing the output of your amp & speakers via the video camera, or is it a direct output into a recording device (eg, computer) and you've mixed it into the final video?

    This a great sounding pedal. But it has one drawback.: it's a pedal. Traditional organists will find it very inconvenient to operate.
    If Neo were to add a remote switch that could be wired to a two position or a three position switch mounted in the traditional half-moon style, then they would have something.

    Hey Jim, if you had a Leslie 3300 and a Hammond C3 would you use a 1/4 jack output and use the Leslie 3300 instead of the NEO or would you use the NEO VENT 2.????? Are they both the same sound ? I am betting there is some difference........I know the Neo Vent is for easy load, but just wandering your thoughts on the sound of EACH, which do you think is better?

    • @JimAlfredson
      @JimAlfredson  9 лет назад

      Nothing beats a real Leslie. I use the 3300 live a lot, especially for gigs where I'm kicking bass because those tend to be small combos, usually trios, and the Leslie really fills up the acoustic space. For recording, the Vent is great and for larger gigs where you're going to be playing through a PA anyway.

    I play layered sounds like strings and voice along with Organ and accompaniment (drums bass) and I tried a Vent but it affected all the sounds not just the organ and sounded terrible. You mentioned there is a way to bypass the other sounds. I tried bypass but it just turned it completely off.

    • @JimAlfredson
      @JimAlfredson  5 месяцев назад

      What keyboard are you using?

    • @sglynn
      @sglynn 5 месяцев назад

      @@JimAlfredson I use two. For band I use a Roland Fantom 07. The other is a midi accordion with Roland BK-7M backing module. On that the Style accompaniment plays 8 sounds plus 2 sounds on left hand and 2 more sounds on right hand. It has organs but rotary sim isn’t very good so I tried Neo Vent. But too many sounds are coming out and rotary affects on them sounds bad. On Fantom the built in rotary seems pretty good. When I connected Vent to it I really need to stop the sim on the Fantom so it doesn’t interfere with the Vent. Plus I sometimes use layers so same problem as midi accompaniment. I’ve concluded Vent or Leslie speaker is for a dedicated organ keyboard. Good learning.

    • @JimAlfredson
      @JimAlfredson  5 месяцев назад

      @@sglynn The Roland Fantom 07 appears to have two sets of stereo outputs; the MAIN left and right output and a SUB left and right output. I am not familiar with the Fantom but my guess is you can assign a sound to one stereo output or another. So you would need to remove the internal Leslie sim from your organ patch in the Fantom, then set it to output through the SUB outputs, then connect the Ventilator to that output so that only the organ sounds go through it. Then your MAIN outputs would be for all the other, non-organ sounds.

    • @sglynn
      @sglynn 5 месяцев назад

      @@JimAlfredson Thank you for your ideas and reply. I really appreciate your extra efforts. Yes that’s viable idea but I’ve got hundreds of saved scenes with several sounds per scene that would need editing and that’s too much editing and not worth it. Plus that ruins the stereo and the on board rotary sim is good enough. Plus the band environment is noisy and the B3 sound gets drowned out a bunch by electric guitars. If I was a pure organ player without all the other noise I’d use a Vent.

      That's a good idea and it's something I'll probably do.
      I have to disagree that the tone of the new Hammonds is (not "are") terrible. They sound very good with a little tweaking and especially through a real Leslie. The onboard Leslie sim in the new XK1c is quite good as well.

      Jim Alfredson sorry but i have to agree ;. Apostolic pentecostal people are stuck on a real b3 thru a leslie. the new organs sound to electronic yes you can tweak but you will never get the sound of the real old school hammond b3 with a leslie on it. sorry. The Vent II does a perfect job to me on a Real Hammond Organ ,

      Terrible as compared to a B3 or A100 with Leslies? I'm writing this in year 2018 so much has improved beginning with the Xk3-c, SK-1, XK5 [aka the new B3]. if one plays these 'flat' thru a stationary keyboard speaker, then I hear your point. The Motion of a moving cabinet 'doppler effect' is at minimal 50% of the sound enhancement. One needs the Leslies or a simulator to move the sound waves around the room.

    I listening to these various 'vent' demos. i... do not.. hear a huge tectonic, dramatic difference betw the Vent and my SK onboard leslie sim. There is some. Sure. Others here have claimed the opposite when actually using a vent with their SK, so they spent the $500. So there must be [SOME] difference. Then I am thinking...in a performance it is the musician's inner self that brings any Instrument to life. It is 99% artist physical performing that gets heard. No one onstage highlights the Doppler Effect as the focus of their performance... Evidendenced by the multitude of SK Organists that just simply 'perform with what the Instrument came with and dedicated years to develop their skill set: the HUMAN doppler effect. Best Regards Hammond Lovers

      Since i have not actually auditioned live a 'Vent' but rather use JBL Gen 2 15'' powered cabinets with my SK-1 73 and its onboard Sim...I could be missing something important. The VID is not suggesting [to me] that I am. The truth perhaps is found in a room with my own rig and a real 'Vent". Am I spending $500 to put on my Sk-1 73 and my XK5? I just not feeling it. Intrigued? Yes. Yet I certainly know I have a lot more work to do on my own chops before I delude myself into thinking $500 and pressing more buttons is a magical answer.
      Respectfully Yours.
