- Flow State Overlanding - Episode 3 - Goose Lake through Sante Fe, Angel Fire, Eagle Nest, Eagle Nest Lake, Red River, and the moderate to advanced rated 4x4 off-roading trail known as Goose Lake Trail to arrive at Goose Lake. The trail gets its rating due to high water crossings that range anywhere between 12” and 30” depending on the season, the narrowness of the trail itself with 2 way traffic and 500’ drops. The trails duration is about 7.3 miles, reaches an elevation of 11,656 and takes about an hour depending on how much stopping you do to take in the amazing views. Hope you enjoy! - LogOut
Next time you're in the area, when you, just before you enter Embudo Canyon you drive through Velarde. There's a winery called Black Mesa that has a phenomenal local selection. Their dark chocolate red blend, Black Beauty, is awesome! Also, when in Taos, try Orlando's on the north side of town. Best Mexican food in Taos. As for trail driving, uphill drivers should be given the right of way whenever possible. They have a restricted view compared to downhill drivers. Not always possible, but good practice when it is. Wish you had had time to cast a fily or two on Goose Lake. Good Trout fishing up there!
One of my favorite RR-area trails. We just ran it in mid-June 2021, and so many trees have fallen to disease it’s a tragedy to see the trail like that.
I agree it was sad to see. I ran it about 4 years ago in my JK and had a similar thought as a I ran it again. However, it is still a very beautiful trail. Strange how in NM, it takes so long for a forest to regain its energy. There are some trails in the Jemez that haven’t regrown in 10+ years.
Can you camp near Goose Lake ?
Good question! There were a couple dispersed type camping areas on the Goose Lake trail and some people camped out in the parking lot at the top. However, I don’t think it’s really allowed but no one will really say anything. We did some day camping up there but stayed near Jacks creek on our way home to kind of break up the drive a little for the night. But there are some fantastic campgrounds around the Red River area.
