I was at the race and got to meet Rich for the first time. He was insanely nice and took the time to chat and take a picture with me though I'm sure he had a million things to do. I did this race in 2018 and knew how hard it was, so to see him go sub 9 was truly impressive! Rich is the GOAT!
As good as Rich is there is a huge lesson here, he surrounds himself with great people and continues to learn and take guidance on becoming even better, this is just awesome to see. Matt Chan is an absolute Legend, and to see how motivated he is too help Rich be successful, speaks so much as to who he is. All round just a motivating, humbling and yes AWESOME!! Go Mayhem!!
From watching Rich in the early days of crossfit in carson as an indie, to teams, become the sports greatest ambassador, building the mayhem empire, a family, a farm, mayhem hunt and now pushing his fitness to accomplish leadville is nothing short of amazing. Honoured to be able to wear the mayhem brand and be a part of this absolute ledgendary group of individuals and athletes. Congrates to Rich and your team; everything you put your heart into is truely inspring. the Mayhem media is hands down the best in the buiz! cherry on top...legendary OG's Matt and Cherie Chan! Epic Mayhem...just epic!
I was preparing for my first Leadville last summer and found your videos about doing it as well. Gotta be honest, I thought you were nuts trying to go sub 9 as a non-cyclist, but you killed it. Very impressive. There were so many things that could've messed you up. Cycling fitness, mechanicals/flats, the altitude, the nutrition and fueling of an event that long. I have no doubt you could go sub 8 if you dialed in the fueling part and now that you have experience on the course, if you wanted to. I started in the purple corral and you passed me right as we entered the singletrack between pipeline and twin lakes. I was like, oh crap, he just made up X amount of minutes on me already and we're not even 40 miles in. Great job! Will be curious to see if this gave you the bug or you move on to another type of challenge.
IT WAS WORTH THE WAIT!!! Wow!!! There are many thousands of seasoned MTB’s that have failed to go sub-9 at Leadville despite devoting years of training to the sub-9 dream. Especially inspiring to see a muscular athlete go so fast! Proved you don’t need to be rail-thin to race XC on a MTB!!!!
Rich you crushed it. Been riding for 40 yrs and raced for 17. It was emotional watching this. Only endurance athletes even slightly understand the burn and suffering. Fuckin' proud of you brother!
👏👏👏👏 Media Team you did outstanding with this!! Rich as always inspiring people to keep digging deep and to keep accomplishing hard things!! Thank you!! Well done sir!!
Great Job Mayhem Media Team of documenting the Leadville experience!!! Thank You to all Team that supported adventure/ opportunity!!! Oh, and Great Job Son!!
Just an amazing athlete!! Loved watching you from the beginning in CrossFit through the years. In my opinion you were a major contributing factor to the growth of CrossFit! The first to win 4 times in a row, dominating the team division of CrossFit, one of the first athletes to create a successful RUclips channel devoted to CrossFit and interacting with the community through the channel. One of the most successful athletes to create a CrossFit empire. One of the major contributors in the CrossFit community to give back through charity. One of the first CrossFit games athletes to hold CrossFit competitions. One of the first CrossFit athletes to have a shoe designed. One of the first CrossFit athletes to grow a hugely successful online CrossFit membership. One of the most successful athletes to start their own coaching arena for athletes both in the US and around the world. On top of bringing Glory to God. I could go on. You are the Goat. Now you are starting a new journey and it is exciting to see that. Thank you for motivating me! Nice to see you and Matt Chan together again! How nice to have all those people in your “pit crew” helping you.
This is nothing but impressive to the quality of the editing and capturing content, voice overs, seeing the Chans support Rich, and Rich’s just grit to get it done! Huge accomplishment! Congrats! I’ve never been so motivated go to a buffet and hit my own goals
& just like that watching this is still more inspiring and fun than anything these current CrossFit athletes/“influencers” put out. Congrats brother! -13 year affiliate owner
Wow! I was impressed when he did it at the time, but seeing this made me understand just the scope and magnitude of this task..so inspired by RF! To the media team for capturing this - what an amazing feat… congrats on this… This media team should be tasked with the games doco, it would be brilliant!
Video was amazing quality! Thoroughly enjoyed watching it. Everything has already been said. Rich and those around him continue to shine the light of Jesus wherever they go.
This was your best video yet guys! Really cool to watch. Proud to know you all. Rich, Scott, Ben, Bennett… this was just awesome. Is Matt Chan an awesome pit man or what!? How he served was some of my favorite parts. And hearing those bike treds screaming on the pavement was intense.
Rich shows no signs of even wanting to slow down. The man’s drive and ambition is inspiring. God’s given him a gift. Love that he uses his platform and life to glorify him.
Got this recommended and honestly wasnt expecting to get pulled into the story like I did. From a cyclists perspective, that was one hell of an effort. Congrats!!
Loved this video and it only fired me up to get out and bike more. Any chance the upcoming Leadville winners training schedule/plan could be made available on the mayhem app? Would love to follow along with them.
any plans to do more? should check out the home race in Michigan, coast to coast race ! from lake Huron to lake Michigan but awesome work on this one!!! true motivation
Awesome video and congratulations on the big buckle! I was the guy drafting you at 17:10 min. I was on pace for sub 9 until that damn Columbine climb.😅 I started cramping bad but finished in 10hr 27 min. It was my first attempt too. 👍🏻
Everything Rich goes through in this race is really how it is. Two time finisher - one race went exactly according to plan, the other I barely squeaked in under the 12 hours. The only trick to Leadville is never stop moving forward. I saw his Whoop was 20.7 and mine was the same - I think you actually have to die to get 2. Recovery the next day was 1%. Rich might have benefited from an ultra high carb drink mix in a camelbak vs hauling all of those gummies and gels around.
FANTASTIC EXECUTION!! Great video as well. I say the next one should be The Marji Gesick, a sub 12hr gets you a buckle...only about 10 people a year do it sub 12. Its 90 % singletrack and technical. The Marji is touted as the Hardest Single day 100 mtb race in America!!
Rich, amazing accomplishment dude. You are the OG GOAT. Leadville is definitely a bucket list item. Next year, or in future, you gotta get the Mayhem crew together and come to AZ and do the 24 hours of Old Pueblo. We finished it this weekend, so you have an entire year to train for it. GREAT JOB DUDE!
@@CFProjectMayhem 2 Things...Love your Specialized! Very cool paint-job - Specialized do it or you had someone else do it for you? And - next Adventure planned? Cheers from Virginia!
This is hella impressive. I follow and watch professional road cycling (Tour de France and all the other races) and to see a man of Froning's build get on a bike WITH a fanny pack full of food and gels to race is not what I'm used to seeing. One of the biggest guys in the professional road peloton stands at 1.90m/6'2" and weighs 80kg/176lbs. Froning definitely fills out a cycling kit in ways I've never seen before as well. Lots of muscle! I was wondering how this would turn out for him with the extra weight he carries (compared to a pro cyclist in general), the weight of the fanny pack, eating all the calories and carbs, this not being his specialty, etc., and I have to say he knocked it out if the park....or in this case, off the mountain. I loved watching him in CrossFit and this was a joy to watch as well. Congratulations Mayhem! And if you have never been to Leadville you should go. It's a really cool town with a vibe all it's own.
Lived in Leadville for a year and finished top 20 in the Leadville 100 Run 3 times. Would love to have Rich on a episode of the podcast to chat about Leadville!

Avid mountain biker here. This is an insane accomplishment. 8:32 at Leadville is incredible. Congrats Rich!

I’ve been looking forward to this since Leadville. Thanks Mayhem team especially Scott!
Happy you enjoyed it! Hopefully it was worth the wait 😅
So cool to see another OG, Matt Chan, helping out!
long time cyclist, not a cross fitter... really enjoyed your perspective on this iconic race from a VERY fit everyman. thank you for sharing.
