- Testing the Saxon Scieldweall!
Formation of a shield wall is a military tactic that was common in many cultures in the age before early modern warfare. There were slight variations of the tactic by culture, but in general a “wall of shields" was formed by soldiers standing shoulder-to-shoulder, holding their shields so that they would abut or overlap. Each soldier benefited from the protection of the shields of his neighbours and his own.
Short clip from an episode of Instruments of Death documentary series, investigating how military tactics and technology have helped shape the history of battlefield combat throughout the centuries.

Bear stopped when he hit that wall, he only used 0,02 percent of his manliness
They need an NFL line backer to try it
Bear needs Berzerker shrooms
That was a common problem when useing untrained/inexperienced troops they didnt have the confidence to use everything in the charge or the fear of causeing themselves harm would stop them. After they felt a real charge a time or two that went away and then they could be used to punch holes in sheilf walls

Mr Bear hit the brakes right before collision
Aye... And thank goodness, for the sake of the folks in the wall. hah
Cause he didn't want a concussion. You wouldn't go full force in a real battle either
Right? I think he would have easily broken through either the shields or the people behind them... 😂
Want to be fair you wouldn’t run into basically a wall of people by yourself at full speed with no helmet that’s just plain dumb
@@Heavy42786you dont run alone you got dudes aswell and first shock liners usually equipped with the heaviest armor

if that man wanted to break the wall he absolutely could
I don’t doubt that; but the other part of a shield wall are the weapons.
He would’ve been dropped well before he broke the wall on his own
I recommend you to read a bit about the history of rome.
The assumption that big tough man can chaotically charge at a shield wall and win is the mother of most military defeats of the northern neighbors of Rome.
With that said... The guys holding the wall are doing a very poor job. If they had been serious the shield wall wouldn't have flinched on that hit.
@@jmmh1313 I think what he meant is that bear did a pussy ass charge... We're not saying a legit shield wall would break... Just in this scenario if the dude actually tried to throw his whole bodyweight behind that hit he would have dropped at least one or two of those dudes...
It takes more training to keep men in a shield wall actively supporting one another at risk of their own lives than it does some BARBARIAN charging forward. Shield wall as a tactic obviously works, but these guys aren't disciplined or trained enough to take even a mock charge from this big SoB.
Hard to blame them, there's no benefit to actually demonstrating this and someone could get hurt pretty bad.
@@stillmetal760rider5 assuming the guy is 100 kg and that your average 60kg guy can withstand the weight of 50 kg i would call your comment unfounded. Teamwork really does matter way more than any individual's skill or strength.
Bear didn't wanna kill someone so he only used .005% of his charge strength.
The anglo saxon line at hastings was (according to some sources) so strong the dead didn’t fall
Eventually they fell. Mustve been tired from all that marching too. Poor Harald. 👑
Not quite, most of the men were freshly recruited on the way down
Many people think of a shieldwall as a single line, but often times a shieldwall's strength came from several to many rows of men, all locked together and pushing eachother forward. This is both why charges were so powerful and the formation was so strong at the same time. I've participated in several reenactment and recreation battles where this was the case, and on several occasions was literally lifted off the ground by the men to the front, side, and behind me as the shieldwall pressed against another. So it's not surprising at all that the dead didn't fall in the Battle of Hastings. Several times when I was "killed", I had literally nowhere to go and couldn't move an inch until the formation either moved out of position or broke apart.
@@RogerTheilsounds like a hell of a time lol
@@RogerTheilNobody thinks a shieldwall is a single line of people.
Weakest charge I've seen since Total War Rome 2
The only thing weaker is a unit of Pretorian guard fighting surrounded.
Fr 😭😭, that shieldwall looked flimsy as hell as well
jesus christ that hit right in the feels
Actually laughed with that one lol
Loll
Haha bollocks he slowed right down before hitting the wall 🤣🤣
He didn't
Yeah that was weak tbh
It was all cock mate, the way the camera changed to a closer angle for a SLOW MOTION shot indicates very clearly that he did slow down just before. Not to mention his footwork. There was nothing stopping these people from just letting him actually fully charge them.
@@GyroGarrison cock?
It was a poor charge regardless. I weigh half that dude and I could knock that weak wall over like ninepins
Ngl when I read the title I thought a real bear will come and charge the shield wall.
Not far off
Bear was not giving it his best
Weak ass charge. Make them sign wavers next time. Go full hog like that beast of a man could do
Bro chill it’s just a documentary
"bear, time to "charge" another shield wall"
"yes honey"
Ah yes, it was totally for the safety of the dudes behind shields and holding weapons and not the dude who would have to run full speed into a solid shield wall of said people holding weapons, who im sure would totally have no issue keeping a steady grip if someone twice their size sprinted into them at full speed.
Modern History TV had an episode about shield walls, as well as the boar snout formation (ala infantry wedge) to break through it.
That charge had someone almost fly into the air

Sir Levi Strauss of House Denim.
Looks like a long forgotten episode of Quantum Leap.
...and thousands more bears.
It would be easier to break the wall without hitting the brakes just before the collision
Bear walked into the wall lmao
This has a distinct "the Office" feel to it.
Bear was awfully generous to not nuke their shield wall with his full power and ruin the special. You can tell he hit them with like 40% power.
Well we know who the weakest link is
The German? 🇩🇪
Well not bad but...
First, those shields are way too low. Gonna get piked in your face. Second, bend the knees and put the shoulder behind the shield to brace. This will make your legs a less inviting target and also help stabilize for a charge. Finally, when receiving a charge you want to lower your center of gravity, push you weight forward and shove back at the moment of contact.
If you're the one charging , again shield should be high so you don't get skewered on your way in. Find the weak point in the line, the guy peeking over the top of his shelf and looking shaky and aim between him and his partner. Don't go straight on, charge at an angle so you break the formation. Finally, lower your center of gravity right before contact and lift up when you hit.
How do u know all this
Correct
@@kanyenorth2605 Pretty basic kinesiology and physics. Extremely similar principles to an (American) football defensive linemen trying to get past an offensive linemen.

Pov you thought he was actually gonna run into the shield wall and not just give it a little bump
I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought Bear lost his momentum right before hitting the shield wall
Archers were so much more OP in battle back in the day than TV or games reveal. Good archers could annihilate almost any formation. Even the shield wall wasn't completely immune.
Good archer requires a lot of equipment and training, most archers were levied only 1 on 20-30 houses.
They were certainly effective throughout history till late middle ages.
This is fucking facts bruh. When doing defenses in Rome 1, I literally just set up a phalanx of 2 units, and ROWS of archers behind them and one time I finished with 1000 casualties to only 20.
Archers are insanely good. They can break up formations, tear town a shield wall bit by bit(once 1 weakness is exposed it's over), take out strays, and even take out cavalry units by going for the horses. Totally decimating an entire unit, by rendering their main thing unusable. The horses.
They can do A LOT.
Bear knew what to do, he didn't want to start a diplomatic incident
"Bear" was NOT committed to that charge whatsoever 😂
That was just the gentlest little tap from Bear. 😅😅😅
Poor teddy bear didn’t want to hurt himself.
Bro pulled his punch
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
That UNIT of a man could have ABSOLUTELY DESTROYED that wall with minimal effort
he definitely pulls back a bit you can see it
The combined strength of a a lot of people in an interlocked shield wall is incredibly impressive. With the right equipment and training, I'd say that they probably could push back against an actual bear.
depends on which bear
@@delanovanraalte3646 Shield walls were able to push back entire armies, cavalry charges, and in the case of the Romans, they were able to hold back entire war elephants.
Personally, I think that if 100 people with years of training equipped with steel shields in a testudo formation or a phalanx could easily push back a few grizzlies or a polar bear. Depending on how strong the shield bearers are they could potentially force the bears into a tight space and force them to fight each other. After all, the Romans and the Greeks were able to do the exact same thing to entire armies that had cavalry, war elephants, siege machines etc, so a few bears wouldn't stand much of a chance.
Plus in the real shield wall you’d have people behind you helping you keep balance and supporting you if you did fall
@@lukesimmons897 Yep. Many people underestimate how truly powerful a shield wall is. Even if you fell in battle, there's a good chance that the shield bearers behind you would still be keeping your body standing and pushing you forwards.
@@paudiedaly22 exactly! And if you fall in battle you got someone else to take your place

I can see why his parents named him Bear.
The way he almost swallows his own head when he says "but to test it's effectiveness, we need somebody bigger"

Mr. Bear knew he would have wiped their bloodline out if he used full strength, so he had to dial it back. STAY HUMBLE KINGS

They can't move their arms in that formation, they can't protect their legs with that formation. They would be doomed.
Do you actually think you've managed to figure out a better battle strategy than the dudes who were actually there fighting back then? You're probably covered in cheetos dust and cum my guy lmao get the fuck outta here
Ah yes. The formation was used for a thousand years because it was so ineffective.
@@boustrophedon5750 I don't have a problem with the fact that they form a shieldwall. I have a problem with the way they form a shieldwall. You need space. You need space to be able to attack and more important, to defend. A tight formation like that would be doomed.
@@jarlnils435 You do not need space in shieldwall or it will be useless. First line holds shields and swings weapons, while all the job of defeating enemy is done by second and third rows who attack from behind.
Just like the other tight formations that was used around the world. Like Phalanx, Tercio and such.
@@Neo2Rus ever fought in a shieldwall?
Shout out to Bear for really giving it his all. Lol
Ok with exercise and better trainning and focus and spirit warrior mind ok you can stand your ground against thousand foes that charge against you if you are in the middle but the all end right and left guys would be a real great danger for them from the monent always they are the easier target
The problem is - there will be no thousand foes. It would be almost equal amount.
As you can see the shield wall demoralized the combatant before he reaches it, changing his mind he now doesn’t want to run into it full speed
