Fun fact: the black prince was so impressed with the king of bohemia bravery, that he adopted his personal badge, the ostrich feather, as his own. Its been the badge of the princess of wales ever since
I see a great future for this channel. Keep it going and keep them comming. I've been expecting something like this for a while now, the time of squares and rectangles standing in for armies is coming to an end. The time of 3rd animated battles is upon us. What a time to be alive.
Now this is a great idea for a series, i’ve watched many history videos and the battles are always simulated with circles and squares from a bird’s eye views. This gives us a more 3D view of the battle and I look forward to seeing more videos from you
So your plan is to rush a tired army of knights uphill and frontally into a well-prepared position of spearmen? King of France: "Yes! It will be glorious! And I want it to be done piece-meal to decrease the effectiveness even more!"
"I don't know, something is wrong about this, something is missing ... ah, now I remember: On your way up the hill, don't forget to ride through and trample down our retreating crossbowmen. Thanks.
Unfortunately, like all these animated recreations, you've missed the most important part of the battlefield, which determined the disposition and movements of both armies. From the Route de Fontaine in the south almost to Wadicourt in the north, the Vallee des Clercs is lined to the west with a 45-degree overgrown bank ranging from 2 to 6 metres deep, over which an armoured man-at-arms would have trouble passing, and a mounted knight had no chance at all. It's a geological feature that was there in 1346, and if you look for it, you can still follow its line on Google maps after nearly 7 centuries of ploughing the surrounding fields. I doubt the French knew of its existence until their scouts stumbled across it, but one would imagine Edward did when he chose to defend the ridge to the west. It's presence meant the French army had to march in close formation up the Fontaine road under the arrows of the English and Welsh archers on the ridge, and then deploy across the Black Prince's battle-front, all the while being shot at distances of around 200 yards before they even began to advance. It's for this reason that the Prince's Battle bore the brunt of the fighting. The huge disproportion in dead between the two armies suggests very few of the French charges even closed with the ranks of English men-at-arms and archers, or the Welsh archers and spearmen. But however many actually did, they didn't come in long lines stretching across the valley north to south between Wadicourt and Crecy. Edward's choice of battlefield, like Wellington's 470 years later, was one of the key determinants in deciding the outcome of the battle.
@@mhovar101 Said King Philip VI as his knights tumbled down the bank. Happy to stick a shaft of goose-feathered steel in your ignorance at 200 yards, Herr Maximilian von Hovar.
I've heard other sources which say the crossbowmen didn't leave their shields behind due to overconfidence, the luggage cart carrying the shields was further back in the convoy and hadn't made it to the battlefield in time
That's the truth, and also much of their ammunition. They were far from over-confident and (wisely) made barely a token effort at engaging the archers without the cover of their pavise.
@M The chance of them prevailing in an exchange with longbowmen was pretty much zero but that doesn't mean it wouldn't have affected the battle's outcome.
Holy heck yes! I LOVE that the epic history documetaries are making their way to RUclips now and more ppl are having their own take on the genre! I can already see this channel gaining millions of subs and the battles being more and more epic! the 3d nature of it is also extremely original and you can actually realize the full SCALE of these battles instead of just seeing squares move on a background
I LOVE your animation, really gives perspective to the size of the battle that you don’t get elsewhere. The narration is fantastic as well - 1 new sub here!
Great presentation of one ugly battle in a nasty war. The conflicts between my country & France have been brutal to say the least. I take more inspiration from the channel tunnel & concorde. Two great nations working in collaboration. That's what we need more of nowadays.
Yes I agree The trouble too with accounts of the Hundred Years War is that English history books pump up Crecy Poitiers and Agincourt while domplaying Du Guesclin and Jeanne Darc while French ones do the precise opposite! My favourite character from the late mediaeval age was Margaret of Anjou a French queen of England! Vive La France et Vive L'Angleterre!!
This is one of the best productions of battle i've ever seen. I really really really like this. Would love Napolean campaigns in this sort of production style.
That would be amazing , Waterloo maybe could be possible but the numbers were huge at around 210'000 men on the battlefield so that could be a challenge. Also some of the Napoleonic battles were spread across massive areas ,Vitoria for instance was spread across 20 miles so they may be very tricky if its even possible. Personally I think these style animations at this scale are perfect for Rome battles , Viking battles and Byzantine battles , the crusades would be great too , basically the whole classical and medieval period , oh and pike and shot period would fit perfectly also!
excellent idea , excellent performance . if you continue like that you will be one of best historical channels to ever exist . subscribed and waiting for more 👏

On a motoring holiday in France a few years ago I was surprised to see road signs on the outskirts of Crecy announcing that the town was " Twinned " with Llantrisant .
Nice historical representation, well done. If I could make one suggestion: It would be great if the video was considerably brightened - I had to put my screen up to maximum, which burns my eyes with any other content.
Hmm - when I hear "Count of Valeus" (2:43) or some such instead of the proper pronunciation of Valois as "Valwa," I wonder what robots are behind all this...
First I’d say thanks this is a great presentation, just as a bit of constructive criticism and as mentioned earlier the Crecy ridge or sometimes referred to as the Crecy Bank was ignored in almost all the source material at the time of the battle but was critical to Edward the III’s choice of defensive position as Edward’s enemies were “funneled” to an expected route where the English archers could reek havoc, chaos and death upon the enemy. Again great video and thank you!
Neat. I'm such a fan of animated battles, and I wanted to do some in 3D during the gunpowder age. Thanks for the inspiration, I'll be following you to see how things go.
Wow i feel lucky to of stumbled upon this brand new channel , i really enjoyed the battle animation and expect this channel to grow huge if you keep the quality this high. As one of your first subscribers i'm looking forward to the journey as you grow , good luck!
I enjoyed this very much. Yes, English not British (this term only came in the early 18th century with the union of England and Scotland) although to be very accurate you could say Anglo-Welsh, because many of the archers were Welsh.
The reference to "British" is anachronistic - if there were any Scots present they would have been in the French king's guard, although some of the bowmen fighting for Edward were probably Welsh.
I watched a program recently about crossbows where the presenter mentioned that you can't unstring a crossbow without the aid of forge tools because the arms are under too much tension, much greater than a bow. Not sure if this would be the reason they couldn't just unstring the crossbows in this battle while it rained.
@@I_Don_t_want_a_handle they were not stupider than you and me, they were professional solders, I'm shure they knew how to cover their weapons and keep it actionable
After doing a bit more reading, turns out that's only true of crossbows with metal prods, which were a later innovation and the crossbows at this battle would have used a composite wood/horn material for the prods. They could actually unstring them by hand using what was called a "bastard string" which you would nock to take tension off the firing string and could then remove it. Some more research indicates that it was actually the composite material of the crossbows that didn't fare so well getting wet, and probably not the strings that were the issue.
@@SStojThe crossbow strings were made from leather which posed no issue when getting wet hence why they didn't remove the strings as the English Longbowmen did, probably the biggest issue is that they ditched their Pavise Shields.
Love the soldiers eye view, the topography and the likely spot of casualties as they charged in. Personally if I came up against a well defended position and being able to use mobility, I would of moved around to the right and charged in. With the river at their backs, the English would have no escape route.
