  • comparison of differeng slang shaders in retroarch with mgba core
    other settings:
retro arch bilinear filtering off/video filter off/ audio filter: LowPassCPS.dsp (help decrease the courseness of the low sample gba audio)
I also set the scaling to interger and the ratio to 1.47 (its supposed to be 1.5 on gba, but circles look rounder for me at 1.47)
    mgba core settings:
    color correction: gba
Make sure to change the game to stereo at profile selection screen (select headphones instead of gba)
    my preferred shader: RetroArch\shaders\shaders_slang\crt\crt-royale.slangp

I'm not entirely sure what the point of a CRT shader for a GBA emulator is. These games weren't made to be output to a CRT, but on the GBAs tiny LCD screen. Completely different technologies that are nothing alike. Have a look at the LCD display shaders, they do a decent job if you combine them with some color correction. The CRT shaders just make the games look very odd.

It's already using gba palette color correction, that's built-in to the emulator core in retroarch.
It's a preference, there are shaders that emulate that GBA lcd screen, but I preferred the crt look.

You could use the Game Boy Player attachment for the GameCube to play GBA games on a CRT back in the day. I much prefer the CRT look. To each their own, though!

For that exact reason some prefer a CRT filter over an LCD filter in some cases: In a small screen it make sense, the LCD dots are small, the lack of details is not noticeable and its just absurd to try to put a CRT filter because it will look almost the same, but when you are playing on a 27'' screen its fucking uncomfortable to have LCD filters because dots are so big they make the game look bad, and CRT just looks better.

      Who cares it look better

@@wingedhussar1453 Yes but there are shaders that emulate the look of LCD screens, which try to approximate what the developers intended it to look like, which IMO looks better
Of course, I can't argue with taste. But you have to admit it's a tiny bit weird.

The perfect shader is *no* shader at all. However, if I had to pick one, it would be vt220. Yeah.
