I really appreciate the time taken to make these comparison videos. I'm still waiting to find the perfect SP kit. The good ones I've had all needed cuts to the shell. The drop in one I tried was the Hispeedido kit but the lighting is really uneven on there. For the price, I was disappointed. So for now I'm still searching and this video was very helpful!
This is a great video! Good that there's tons of options though. I wish you had mentioned resolution of each display, cuz I know some of them display at 2x which can make pixels look extra blocky
lol the hate for the ITA kit Poor little guy, he is not that bad. I have it on my GBA and I love it!!! Viewing angles not the best. Not the brightest but the best battery life and natural pixel grade is perfect for some of us.
Hot take: i actually like playing gba games on my ds lite more than on my ips modded gba because of the authentic pixel grid and your Video made me want to buy the ita kit because i didn‘t know that ita is just a dsi screen
Like scanlines it does have that soothing look to the eyes, similar to the effect of M.C. Etcher's art :-) but it's good there's smooth and there's pixel grid (and scanlines) to choose from, depending on one's mood- I'm glad both exists, two artful flavors.
Those comparison is pretty clear and fast, as you said i'm quite with you w/ the fact that it's cool to keep it original if the console is usable that way !
I have an AGS-001 and AGS-101. How much of an upgrade are the IPS mods over the AGS-101 for overall image quality and motion clarity? I'm wondering if I should mod the 001 model and make it my default Pokemon handheld for GBA games.
You could use an original AGS-101 to mod the AGS-001 since, sir Jake said you're not missing out if you have the 101, perhaps that's more cost-effective and it's still all Nintendo part for the purist, or semi-purist (I'm a purist for the most part, I keep even the original plastic bag and wires that came with the original cables when I buy my gadgets most of the time).
I ended up with 2 AGS-101 SP's from auctions, and one of them had some kid named Matt's name carved into the top of the shell. Big sad face. What I think I'm going to do with it though is get one of the Boxy Pixel aluminum SP shells, and just put the 101 screen in there. I prefer the 101 screen over all of the IPS screens anyway, and I think it would be super cool to have one in an aluminum shell. Haven't seen many people do that.
That would probably explain why I haven't seen it. Thanks for the heads up. I'll have to look into it. Just don't wanna be stuck with a shell that has "Matt" carved into it, and really don't want to compromise on the quality of the new shell.
That could be a blessing in disguise, adding a story and personality to the that SP. I guess his dad was looking out for him when Mark was a kid and etched 'Mark' on there so nobody can steal it :-).
I got the V5 then decided I wanted the HDMI adapter mod and they don't work together you need the V2 ips for the boards to match up and fit. Two options now, downgrade to the V2(not much of a downgrade it seems) or wait to see if they come out with a V6 and HDMI integration
I am curious, when you do these tests: do you use the same GBA SP motherboard model? because I think i remember that AGS-001 and AGS/AGT-101 use different current levels.
I have a v2 modded SP from 2020 and am considering the 3.0. is there any screen size difference between the two? how about color saturation? these things are the most important to me and i cant seem to find any resources online comparing them
Cool, this sums it all up. Ask the mod makers, use your influence sir Jake to create a good OLED version w/ lag that's as good as good IPS for true blacks :-) God bless summations.
I'm waiting till they make screens that don't oversaturate all the colours and try to replicate the original look. (unless there is one now) I did that on GBI on my Gamecube and its so much better.
I currently own an AGS-001 frontlit GBA SP that I had since 2003 and I don't have an IPS screen installed into it yet. I'm not good at modding and I don't know anybody in my area who has modding skills. I want an AGS-101 backlit GBA SP, but they are hard to find and collect.
translucent/frosty is for me too, I like the Atomic Purple translucent cases but hopefully they make a matte version so it's more frosty which would be good with frosty transparent (not all the transparent like the Nintnedo transparent, ice Game Boy Color which could look cheap but still cool coz' seeing the insides is it's texture and graphics art)
The real best modkit is the friends we made along the way. Wait, is this just the same comment as last time?
👏🏼👏🏼

LOVE the video but i wish youd tell us which one to buy still! im prolly gonna buy v2. where is that mega man shell??
Is the power draw you mentioned for the whole system or just the screen’s consumption?
Trying to find out how much a gba sp uses.
Everything
8:01 ... The answer I have been looking for, for several days now.
I got you

I think the next SP model ima get is the slate because it doesn’t have hinges. 😱
Missed out on the GBA when it was released. Better snag one to go back and binge the games I missed!
Great video as usual. Finally I can send this to my friends so they stop asking me 🤣

I have that exact question..???
He addresses this in the video: Leave the 101 unmodded, you're not missing out.

I have never tried the boxy pixel shells but i'm not sure if they fit the original screens. 001s and 101s are much thicker than the ips kits

What about input lag? My main concern about ips screen is worsening the playability of rithym games or hardcore platformers
I don't see why there would be any input lag
the purple one is so clean, what shell and buttons were used?
Are you sure I do t have to cut for a 3.0? I've read elsewhere that you do need to. Also why are touchpads bad?
I ordered a V5 now I’m not sure after seeing the v4. It just looks a lot better for some reason.
What about lag?
Awsome video and alot of work went into this one love it
Ghosting and input lag would be nice if there is ever a revision to the video.
I personally hate the mats variant cause if you get a lighter color shell, it will leave stains all around.
I have a v2 modded SP from 2020 and am considering the 3.0. is there any screen size difference between the two? how about color saturation? these things are the most important to me and i cant seem to find any resources online comparing them
About the same on colors and the v2 is 3.2 inches compared to 3 inches diagonal
Oh dang so the V2 really is the goat @@JakeSimmons

Just a make it clear. Any kit is viable even if the SP motherboard is an 001?
Yes. All kits work with all SP motherboards. I just think it’s silly to do it to a 101 model
@@JakeSimmons HAHA yeah that'd be dumb...thanks!
IPS V2 !
You didnt mention extrenerate shells. I would like to se video comparing all gameboy shell types / vendors.

Hey, can you do make How to install New 3DS Loopy Capture Card?
Your SP shade never fails to make me laugh. There wasn't a whole lot toward the end so I'm glad you could fit in a bit more in the blooper.
Great video and v great hat
I want to do a Slate in the future.
It’s clean but I do wish it had the brightness button
I think the v4 would fit me best
I don’t think the v4 is sold anymore
