For all of its esoteric imagery and production value-driven presentation, the video for Closer just doesn’t quite tap into the heart of our generation the same way March Of The Pigs does. This was so impactful to watch, Trent made being a rock star cool again after the grunge boom made everyone dress down in t-shirts and flannelette, and look at their shoes while playing for a few years.
2 styles of directing, I agree with all you said, this might be more representantive of that era, but Romanek's "closer" itself has a lot of value on it's own. I watched that video as a kid (2004) and it certainly made an impression in me, I didn't know any about NIN back then but I never saw anything like that on TV. The second time I knew about Nin was Ghosts, and that was a big shock (the same guy that did Closer did Ghosts? I have to check this guy out). I've been a fan since then.I really like Peter's works, both musical (Coil) and cinematographical (he directed this video and also directed Gave Up).
Oddly, I think this is the ONLY video recorded actually live with no edits, you can hear every drop of every mic, stand, him hitting the keyboard, etc. all live...sounds great.

I already was madly in love/obsessed with Nin and loved this video, and the excitement of seeing it in school where it felt taboo and forbidden was exhilarating. Plus everyone looked to me, as the leading expert on all things goth/industrial as I was the first extreme edgy 90s goth in the area. Those that didn't know me were afraid of me, especially teachers. _I learned from another teacher that a group of teachers (That didn't know me at my school) had a meeting about me because they thought I was a CULT LEADER._ Hahaha This video was a peek at the man behind the curtain of the mysterious underground world I was privy too, shedding some insight into whatever my peers had thought thus far about my life/interests. All I have to say is THANK GODS I GRADUATED THE YEAR BEFORE THE TRAGIC EVENTS AT COLUMBINE.
I remember discovering NIN through my oldest brother when I was like 11-12, subsequently becoming obsessed with them, and I'm now heavily getting back into them after playing Quake Remastered. Such good music, man.
