Tommy was in Black N Blue before KISS. If anyone here are fans of 80's rock Black N; Blue are cream of the crop. I believe Gene produced an album or two of theirs back in the day.
Bought recently, perfect in everything, and plays like a God. The fretboard isn't bad either, but if they made it in rosewood or ebony, I would have spent a few dollars more without problems.
I recently bought my first “high end” guitar vs the several 200-300 ones Ive bought over the years. It was between the Tommy Thayer Epiphone, the Phil Demmel Demmelition Jackson and the Wylde Audio Barbarian (that you reviewed and kinda gave a bad review on). I very fortunately went with the Wylde Audio and absolutely have zero complaints. The most beautiful guitar Ive ever played and the best feel I’ve ever played. @@ryanfulldark2775 It's such a dumb debate. The clowns say they wouldn't have taken the gig if Paul and Gene offered it to them. Ace is amazing and so is Tommy. It's just like the stupid Sammy vs Dave debate.
So just got one of these last week. After seeing one in person I had have it. I was really shocked at how good this thing actually is. My only complaint I've had is the truss rod adjustment. It's a little bit tricky compared to my gibsons, PRS's, and fenders. It does use a 4mm allen key but needs to hit just right. The color is intense and you're right some mirror backplate and new pots would be the only improvements needed.
Loved the EVH licks you threw into your playing demo on this video. idk if this was made before or after he passed but it was cool hearing the tribute either way. Also that guitar looks insane. Everyone in the crowd would be lookin at you for sure. That also assumes we will be able to play stage shows again someday.
I owned the Thayer Explorer. I agree with what he said about the sound of the pick ups. They just sound like boring old man rock to me. I just never liked them. Also, the nut just fell apart lol, it was cheap plastic so I replaced it with a tusq. The wiring or the switch sometimes wouldn't engage the neck pick up, and the thing that spooked me into trading it back in to the dealer, was the truss rod allen wrench receiver was soft metal. The first adjustment (as the neck was bowed) took some reefing, and with the wrench firmly in slightly rounded the nut. The body, neck shape, and finish was dynamite. It was the first and last Epiphone I'll ever buy. I was disappointed as I loved the look and feel of that guitar.
Great vid Austin! I really love my Tommy Thayer White Lightning LP. It plays well and sounds really nice. The white case fits great and yes, the guitar is very sparkly and looks almost pearlescent.
I agree it definitely looks purple in certain lighting and you really do need to see it in person to get the full image. That along with the green and pink metal flake mixed with the blue really gives it that galaxy look. I have one by the way. I got to see him play it on stage once at my final stop on The End of the Road Tour and it looked amazing under stage lights.

Hi Trogs....welp....I received my Blue Sparkle the other day from Sweetwater..I waited about 7/8 months....and I must say....Epiphone is really stepping it up...this is my third Epiphone Les Paul and I love them....they play great right out of the box and feel great and sound AWESOME...I'll be getting several more Epi's....I wish this had the scooped heel like Modern Les Paul Guitars...but it's ok....still plays perfectly after Conditioning the neck and changing the strings to 9's.....love your vids man....take care!
Can you review the old Ace Frehley Custom , the one with his face on the headstock please. Nothing against Thayer personally ,but there's only one Space Ace ! In a '93 interview with Ace he said " Even a bad Gibson Les Paul is better than any other guitar to me" .
You have to be careful with those Ace signature guitars, many of them were absolute junk! They charged a premium price for a single pickup guitar that most of them were horrible. I think it was the second run of his Budokan models that were bad. Ace also has a blue sparkle one and then he has his one that lights up with the big round lights, not the one with all the small lights, that guitar is awesome!!
@@shaunw9270 Yeah I know what you're talking about, the cherry sunburst ones? They "looked" like they had 3 pups but the ones I saw people reviewing had only the bridge pup wired up! One guy said the other two are only covers to make it look like 3. Now some have said that theirs did have all 3 wired up so maybe there are several versions one can get?
@@alabamahebrew Ah right yeah . I know what you're referring to now . I thought you meant that vile heavy Metal shaped thing he had . I knew someone here in England back in the day had one that had 3 Super Distortion pickups but only came with bridge wired up as Ace's own guitar at the time. I have also seen ones where they had a DiMarzio bridge but the other pickups were regular Gibson.
The first thing I thought when I saw the blue Epi was it would be a great stage guitar. I bet it would look great with stage lighting. I think I’d swap knobs for silver to match the guard but it’s definitely a cool stage guitar.
Yeah ace is my favourite guitarist but i still respect thayer for all he has done for kiss before he put on the makeup and while, him using the same gimmick as ace is not ideal and im sure he would rather have his own but he is a great musician who gets hate for something out of his control. I dont love the idea of someone else in aces costume but there are lot worse people who could be doing it so i respect him for keeping kiss gling for younger fans but for also stepping up and filling some big shoes while carrying on aces legacy, he may not be as good but he respects the legacy behind the makeup and is great at what he does
So I guess Gene and Paul can't continue a band since Ace decided he didn't want to be in the band twice? He chose not to be in the band. It's such a silly debate. Ace hasn't been in the band in almost 20 years. You would think people would be over it by now.
Strangely enough, I like the dirty tones better than the clean. The clean tones sound....like every other Epiphone LP. Listening to them at that point, I asked what's so special about these pickups. But with the crunch, it's like, "OK, there's what it's supposed to do." This guitar isn't made for anything except those chainsaw overdrive sounds. If you play loud 'n' dirty - and want to make sure all eyes are on you - this is definitely built for it.
I really liked the sounds of this Les Paul! Full, warm and rich and with very harmonic distortion sounds. Don't know why you were not a big fan of the tones... And I think you played more fluent, easy and faultless on this guitar than on many other tested guitars.
I have one of these and absolutely love it, it definitely rocks! I'm no expert, but I really don't think mine has a D shaped neck, it feels like a 60's slim C to me. I got mine earlier in the year.
Mine sounds exactly the same, I got mine a few years ago in white. They really cheated out on the screws because they have went rusty when all my other guitars screws are shiny.
I bought the Silver Spaceman back in 2014 mainly just to sell down the line to a KISS fan once they retire. Now, it's one of my top 3 guitars!! Mine has Gibson 498's in it, I thought it had CTS pots but when Austin was talking about his not being CTS that made me look at mine and no they are not. It is pretty much the same guitar only silver with black sides and back and neck. The neck on mine is baseball size and the guitar is very heavy, I think it weighs almost 11 pounds! But Tommy said he had them put a larger than usual neck on it and the body is also a bit thicker than your typical Epiphone Les Paul, someone told me that this body is the same size as a regular Gibson, I guess usually Epiphones are a touch smaller? I have had people listen to my guitar playing when I use this one and they are wowed by the tones I get from it and I must say it does sound great! I saw several reviews of this Blue one last winter and I have to say I don't see myself ever buying one, mostly because of the finish, it's just too much for my taste. His white ones though I do want to get, both the LP and the Explorer versions.

I was hoping you would review this dazzling blue beast! I own one of these guitars and have had it for a few months. Sweetwater had these on back order till late October but i found mine at American Music Supply. Beware on the pickups. Mine were wired wrong and had to be fixed when I had it setup. The case goodies were missing too. I called Epiphone and they sent me my certificate of authenticity and Tommy Thayer booklet. The person I spoke with at Epiphone said they had issues with the missing paperwork and bad wiring on some guitars. Beside these few fixed issues, the guitar is beautiful and plays great!! I love the 2 tone color change and the sound is awesome! Thanks for your very informative channel!
Check out their early tracks, especially ones composed by Ace or sung by Peter. Songs like "Strange Ways" (the solo is sick!), "Shock Me", "Black Diamond", "Hotter Than Hell" (Pauls riff is one of the best riffs on the planet and Ace's solo drops ceilings).
@@shaunw9270 The paint guy is a drum kit paint specialist, Eric Singer told Thayer if he wanted an eye popping finish then he was the go to guy. I think he came through with that finish.
Johnny Douglas who is the drum tech for Aerosmith came up with the color He paints drum kits , cars & motorcycles and is good friends with Eric Singer.
So after watching the vid, bought a brand new one. Played ok, took the suggestion of changing pots to CTS. That was a waste of time and money there was no significant noticeable sound difference. The guitar original wiring is a 50s style, if you want different sound response try modern wiring with a treble bleed circuit, otherwise leave as is factory wired. I own 2 Gibson LP standards, a 60s and a 90s, non modified original pick ups. They sound somewhat similar, although at higher volumes they produce a sharper “bite”. I play through two different rigs Marshall and Mesa. The Epi is still fun to play and gig. Yes a custom factory Gibson wound be nice, although the price would be at the 8k$, out of the range of most players.
Great video. I'm hoping you get a chance to review the Bonamassa Black Beauty. I'd love a black beauty that doesn't require selling a major organ. Slight nitpick: some metals are not attracted to magnets in normal situations (for example copper and aluminum). You can induce a current through the lenz effect, but I doubt you'd notice any sort of interaction with the magnet on your screwdriver . Anyhow keep up the good work!
I got the white Lightning LP off of a craigslist trade recently. What a great guitar, I know it's just an Epi, and the white sparkle is a little um... my 6 year old daughter loves it! Very, very happy with the guitar. Great neck, weights all there, killer pick ups. And I am not even a Kiss fan. For my money, I'm down with the Misfits as far as dressing up as a ghoulish rock and roll character.
Too bad about that delay. I sent you a link for this mmoonntthhss ago!! I thought you forgot. But I'll tell you what...the video link, as far as I remember, did not feature a scratchplate!! I LOVE that case! The sound is really "beefy," unlike most Epiphones.
I love your channel Trogly and love learning about vintage guitars, taking them apart, checking over all the specs and history, but your opinion or your viewpoint isn't fact and it feels like that's creeping in a lot lately. Honestly with how much of that I hear in these videos, it's making the videos hard to watch. And again I really do enjoy them at their core. Agufish (who also reviewed this guitar) reviews more from a players standpoint and doesn't care much for brand, and confesses when he's biased. Mostly. Also hell yes this finish
That guitar is seriously gorgeous! 😍 Not a huge kiss fan but that id rock it in a heartbeat, though I swap out all the chrome plastic for some cream white colored ones.
Minor word of advice. If you want to get better color registration, most modern cameras have auto white balance. To make it do a better job of finding a real white, you need to give a white reference. I recommend a big sheet of actual white to put on the workbench to set the white balance. Your countertop is too tan for the the camera, so the camera is doing the best it can. You can also calibrate a white reference with your studio lighting, but that is more work. I'd suggest something like an 11x17 sheet of like poster paper or construction paper. Get a bright white. You can use whiteboard film too, which is more durable. Put that in-shot beside the guitar body, get a couple shots, then move it out of the way to get the rest of your video
I was reading through the comments to see if i should post this. Very few people like the JB with 500k pots it’s just too bright. This pickup was made to add a humbucker to a stock strat without having to change the pots
@@tedtriestech8864 Ah, I see youre a man of culture as well! Haha but yeah. Even Seymour says it sounds best with a 250k pot. I love how it sounds in an alder strat or a Mahogany LP. But only with a 250k pot. Same thing with the Dimarzio super distortion.
The JB pickups are not a favorite of mine and they're not cheap either. They can be very piercing with the wrong speakers, one trick is to set them low. They are not ideal for blues and classic rock- I'm not sure how they became the"industry standard". With different vintage wound alnico pickups this les paul would sound very different-and by different I mean better.
My 2020 '50s Standard didn't come with an allen key, either. They must just not include them. Strange. But, fortunately, I've no shortage of them here, so it wasn't a problem. But, still. You'd think they would give you one!
If they make a black sparkle (looking like those rolls royce linings) I may have to buy my first epiphone. The glitter is amazing, I just wish it wasn't blue!
Hey man, blue and red makes purple. Those glitters change color based on how the light is hitting them. So when the light hits it right it appears purple to the human eye. It doesn't show up on camera because your camera is higher resolution than your eye.
This is certainly an attention-getting piece! How do you feel about the finish?

Johnny Douglas who is the drum tech for Aerosmith came up with the color
He paints drum kits , cars & motorcycles and is good friends with Eric Singer.
'm considering this guitar. I keep hearing mixed things about it. Is it that Bad?
If this came from Melody Music shop in Bloomington, they are great people over there. Love visiting when I get over that way.
I feel like I've been waiting so long for this😂
Great video.
WOW ...listen to Trogly ripping out some Hot for Teacher....you go boy!!!!
I never thought I'd see an Epiphone I'd like but I think I might like
Oh man that guitar looks freaking awesome!
Sold!
I bought a Dot Deluxe a few weeks ago and got the poster, but no truss rod key. I think you're almost certainly missing pieces.
Damn...That case alone is BEAUTIFUL 😁😁😁...The Les Paul isn't too bad either...
Too bad about that delay. I sent you a link for this mmoonntthhss ago!! I thought you forgot. But I'll tell you what...the video link, as far as I remember, did not feature a scratchplate!! I LOVE that case! The sound is really "beefy," unlike most Epiphones.
Love it ! I will have to look out for one, but I bet they get (more) expensive real quick.
Trogly's always in corpsepaint and he just takes it off for facecam 💀💀💀
That guitar is seriously gorgeous! 😍 Not a huge kiss fan but that id rock it in a heartbeat, though I swap out all the chrome plastic for some cream white colored ones.
Oh yes I’ve been waiting for this one!
I like that strawberry color under the black light much better than the blue. And I loved the blue!
Got one. More a display thing if you have actual gibsons. Nontheless amazing thing.
Trogly there’s a reverse explorer for sale of reverb currently for $2,443. Cheaper than a couple of modern explorers I’ve seen atm
I have a feeling that this will be worth a pantload of dollars sometime soon.Very collectable
Great Show Trogly ,good looker,I would switch out the pots.
I wish this was a “Gibson” vs Epiphone. 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻
Nice to see you review a guitar that i've got too & that only arrived on Monday.
This looks like the same flake that was used on my 2018 Gibson Abalone Sparkle Custom. Tons of ads on this video.
250k cts pots for a JB....Change everything. Love those for that.
MAN I'm an Ace Frehley fan but I'm so excited about this one because I never though I'd see it here, cool!
I wish it had binding on the headstock like a custom. I wonder what it would look like with all gold hardware? Probably like a pimps caddie.
I wouldn’t mind having one of these.
Its ok looks like something from the glam rock years the glitter band or t rex or the sweet
Drum kits from that era were painted in the sparkle metallic finish like that guitar.
Hey man, blue and red makes purple. Those glitters change color based on how the light is hitting them. So when the light hits it right it appears purple to the human eye. It doesn't show up on camera because your camera is higher resolution than your eye.
RIP Eddie van Halen. Nice tribute to Eddie. Hot for teacher.
They've dropped these to $549. I'd say a steal at that price.
Snagged one. At that price, couldn’t pass it up.
Dang! They went up to $899 now!
Dang where were they 549???
