good advice at the end in dealing with gassiness from beans. I've been vegan for 50 years and we need to learn how different foods affect our bodies. We need to learn how much to eat also. My problem with delicious food is eating too much of it. I could handle it when I was younger and was never overweight, but as I get older I eat a lot less yet still have plenty of energy due to eating healthy food, exercise, fresh air, and a happy outlook on life.
Wow!!!! 50 years! This makes my heart smile! I've been vegan almost 7 years. Have you experienced any dental issues? I love my life as a vegan, but lately I've had so many encounters with others telling me that I am prone to dental issues in the future.
@@kimberlycastleberry3448 I've been lacto-veg for 56 years, vegan for 10. My teeth are super strong. I think the key is a well-balanced diet of whole foods and a B-12 pill.
Wish i would have gone vegan 50 years ago like Cliff!
One spice to add to the beans while cooking is ground Asafetida. It is an Indian spice that takes away the gas byproduct from the beans. All you really need is a pinch.
Add asafoetida to your a pot of lentils or beans with one of these two methods:
1. Sauté a pinch of asafoetida in your preferred fat over medium heat for one to two minutes (until it smells onion-like), then stir in the water, legumes, plus any extra ingredients and cook.
2. Cook your legumes as desired. In a separate small pan sauté a pinch of asafoetida in your preferred fat over medium heat for one to two minutes (until it smells onion-like) then stir into your pot of beans or lentils.
Thank you!
I clicked on this video from my feed yesterday and I’m glad I did! I’m a New Orleans native and red beans is always on our dinner menu at least twice a month on a Monday baby (in my NOLA vc 😆) Well I tried your vegan red beans recipe today…literally just finished an hour ago…it came out A-MAZINGLY DELICIOUS 😋! Thank you @SweetPotatoSoul for sharing this recipe!!! 🫶🏾
This and collard greens are actually on my New Year’s menu 😊
Stay tuned for my collard greens video this week :)
💚 I can eat this once a week as well. My go to food as a vegan.
Girl come feed me 😏
Another thing you can do is take a non-slotted spoon and mash the beans up against the wall of your cooking pot to give it some thickness. My ex mother-in-law taught me to do that when she cooked her Cuban black beans and they were always amazing.
Just made this but used Beyond Mild Sausage. What an amazing dish! Will be a repeat in my kitchen for sure!
I just made a pot of Camellia Red Beans Monday. Yes, soak the beans overnight. I follow the recipe on the back of package. That’s the brand and flavor of sausage I use for my red beans. Also, I add liquid smoke.
Uuhkkk
Looks so hearty and comforting ❤
i'm surprised how simple this is to make. Thank you!
Red beans and rice are delicious. I remember your older video on the red beans and rice that recipe was delicious. The vegan smoked apple sage sausage is also delicious with it.

Just made this and am truly in DISBELIEF at how good this is!!!😳I knew it was going to be yummy- but I didn’t expect so many smoky flavors to explode in my mouth! 🤯 The texture of the broth in this recipe is phenomenal -not too thin/runny, not too thick. Just right. My new staple. Anyone reading this- PLEASE try it! It tastes even better than you would already expect it to! 😍 Thank you Jenne for this recipe’
I will be making this very soon. Thank you. 😋

Looks so good 😊
Oh it looks delicious, I am going to try it.
That looks amazing! I found myself eating less and less meat and this looks filling and right up my alley! Definitely ordering the cookbook.
I love making this when i have people to share it with. Was a wekly tradition my whole life and then until my son moved out. Just made a big batch in my instant pot on monday. I usually make beyond sausage which also pairs incredibly well and crumble whatever is left after dinner into the red beans. Delish. I also have a bay leaf tree in my back yard!
This is not traditional, but i usually add a carrot to my trinity. My moms bayou born and raised bf says mine are the best he has ever eaten. Total pride moment for me on that one. He is far from vegan and still thinks fish is vegan. Always wants to send me home with some.
Wow, I'd love to have a bay leaf tree!!
@@SweetPotatoSoul you can grow them in containers and they stay small or you can plant them in the ground and they will grow up to 40 ft or something like that. Mine is still in a small pot.
Amazing, I will try your recipe
Hey! Thanks for this! I was searching for a vegan red beans and rice recipe when I found your website then found your channel - subscribed! Just made this recipe and it’s delicious! I’m new to Creole cooking so this was really helpful!
Yum, yum, yuuuuumm!!! These are amazing!!!
I was just RUclips searching a vegan red beans and rice recipe and im so glac that the FIRST result was someone I already subscribe to that i trust when it coems to vegan recipes!
recommend taking out half your cooked beans, pulse a couple times with your blender then add them back to the pot. Makes them creamy and closer to real New Orleans red beans and rice.
Everything you say is yes rihht !! American people make fun of us because we eat lot of bean and rice ! But when I fed then . omg this is amazing lol god bless you Jung pretty awesome ladies 💜💛❤💚💙💘
I love that you give so much instruction and tips. This is perfect for those who want to go vegan but don't know how, aswell as a great source of recipes and ideas for those of us who've been vegan for a while. Great!
I love soups delicious and hearty
Yummy thx for sharing 😊
Well Done. Will fix very very soon!!! Thank You@@
Looks yummy
I always get veggie chili when I eat out. I like this recipe and will give it a try.
Hello, nice to meet you! I love red beans and rice.I just made some a couple of weeks ago, actually! I use to buy it in the box but it seemed like the beans NEVER get done,so,I now prefer to cook them from scratch.I'm going to try this recipe,it looks delicious too!
This is SO much yummier than the boxed one!
First tIme listener. I've been so missing Popeye's red beans and rice. This is a recipe that gives me hope. It's not Monday but I'm giving it a try today, Friday. I don't usually subscribe after one video but I'm doing it now. Thanks
Enjoy!! And that you for subscribing 💗
This dish looked so delicious 😋 Janae u are so beautiful 😍
Gratitude
My introduction to Red Beans and Rice was when I was at an IBM Common User's Group conference in New Orleans. I asked a local at the conference where was a good place to eat and it was Monday so he said I had to have Red Beans and Rice and he recommended Mothers. Over the years I have made it quite a few times and I even made it for my grand children (toned down a bit) and they loved it. I look forward to trying your recipe. On Beans and Rice, combined they deliver the complete set of necessary protein amino acids. My recipe differs in that it has Italian canned tomatoes and a bit more heat as I through in some chipotle. I had an optional ingredient, really smokey bacon, but I like the idea of a vegan sausage which are available up here in The Great White North. I am going to make that tomorrow night. Personally I always thought Kidney beans were one of the easier beans to cook, where as Black Turtle beans are one of the toughest (though I got that one down pat now) beans to cook. Thank you for your recipe.
Here I am on a Friday (defying your Monday challenge) with a cup of red kidney beans soaked overnight, and checking back for ingredients.
Great!! Recipe on mi blog
I would like to Gi e this a try!
❤❤❤
Thank you so much for sharing your simple vegan recipes from your part of the world. I’ve always liked the sound of the food from this region, but I’ve only seen huge portions and loads of meat and additives, etc. so I knew I wouldn’t be able to digest the food! However, your red beans and rice look and sound amazing - I’m off to soak some for tomorrow 😊
I always cook my beans after overnight soaking for the same reason as you do - they do taste more creamy and rich. I also add kombu to the pot because I feel a vegan needs to make sure of getting lots of micronutrients in an intentional way.
There was so much helpful advice that I’ve just subscribed- I look forward to more delicious recipes! Thank you for keeping it calm (I hate lots of shouty stuff and too loud music😢) and relevant to modern living.
Plus I loved the accidental spill - it was so cute. I’m always doing things like that too! Thanks for sharing. Bless you ❤
I hope you were able to try this recipe, how did you like it?! Thanks so much for the sub and support :) cheers!
Yummy
We love using Camellia beans! And the Colgin smoke flavor. Also like to add a jalapeno. We haven't tried adding the Sage Field Roast sausages, but will next time we make them, which is often. I like your recipe!
Enjoy!! We love the same products 😄
It is truly amazing that you can cook a meal wearing all white 😂
Did you see me throw a whole cup of liquid on my floor?! I don't know how I don't spill on myself either 😂
Rice and beans, one of my favorite comfort food. Just curious, what kind of rice did you use for this recipe? 😊
I like using medium-grain brown rice :)
Do you use the Camelia brand of beans? I've used them once before because they're supposed to be the ideal for RB&R, and I soaked them, but they fell apart. Any advice? Btw, I adore your cookbook, and I've used it for ages and enjoyed everything I've made!
Yup I had bad luck with that brand too.
I do use Camelia! Hmm, I've never had that issue. It's possible your beans were older, but I'd contact the brand if you keep having issues with that particular type of bean.
Beans and rice: Two amazing starches (aka complex carbohydrates). 👍
Thank you for this video. I am eating more beans and want to see more vegan videos. Do you have any tips and tricks for making vegan lima beans? I only have had them with ham hocks and now that I'm vegan I would love to make them vegan.
I have this recipe that uses lima beans! sweetpotatosoul.com/southern-buddha-bowl-green-limas/
Thank you so much!! I will try them next weekend. Making black eye peas from your cookbook for New Years.
Can I substitute canned kidney beans for this dish? And if not - why? Thanks so much - looks delicious
Absolutely you can! You may need to adjust the water amount since this recipe is for uncooked beans that will end up soaking up the water. Start with less and add more water as needed.
I’ve grabbed the wrong thing before while cooking! I know how you felt when you grabbed your drink by mistake 😂
😋🤭
Great bean tips..I'll try it, beans arent usually kind to me 😄
Yes, do try. I hope these tips make it easier for you to digest.
The sodium in the field roast is very high. Any suggestions for substitutions?
I linked to a sausage recipe in the video/description, and I have another homemade recipe in my cookbook! For store-bought, just check the sodium content and use whatever vegan sausage you like, but I recommend something similar in flavor to what I used here or vegan Italian sausage.
... Wait... Brazilian here... IS THAT FEIJOADA?! ❤
Oh, I just looked it up. Super similar. What beans do you use for it?
@@SweetPotatoSoulnext time you can complement it with kale sautéed with garlic, make a "vinagrete" and "farofa" made with corn flour or cassava flour and a slice of orange or fried banana and you will have a complete "feijoada". Feijoada is beans (usually black or brown) with bacon, sausages and usually pig parts. As vegans, we replace it with vegetables such as potatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots, smoked tofu, vegan sausages, seitan, mushrooms, etc. In Brazil, rice and beans are the basis of most everyday dishes and feijoada is normally eaten on Wednesdays and at the weekend.
Thought you said you were done... :)
Great video!! For those on Weight Watchers, this recipe without rice is almost zero points. Video doesn't have measurements but I'm going by sight. I got Salvadorean red beans, that's all the store had. Cooked for 2 hours, still not edible. What went wrong?
The full recipe is linked in the description and on my blog :) sweetpotatosoul.com/new-orleans-red-beans-rice-video/ Hmm, did you pre-soak your beans? If so, for how long? If you did soak them and they still weren't cooked after 2 hours, it's possible they're just old beans.
I’m not vegan , just wanting to eat healthier . This looks delicious !
I'm here to help you with that, too!!
I can eat red beans but not I can't eat pinto beans. This recipe was too good. I gave some to my neighbor whose from New Orleans and she was amazed that the fish was vegan. Delicious.
Can I use canned beans.
Yes! Just reduce the water/broth amount by about half and then add more as needed.
Is there an actual recipe for this somewhere in this video?
Link in the description!
Hi, could I use pinto beans instead?
Sure, but the texture will be a little different. Let me know how it is!
The recipe online shows to add kombu, but you didn’t add kombu here, why?
I couldn't find any at the store the day I made this! It's to help tenderize the beans and eliminate gas.
I very much like that you are transparent about your "bias" if you want to call it that. "Pro democracy" these days equals "Liberal" when it really should mean "pro democracy"
Isn’t this Rajma Chawal? A very popular dish in India
The spices are very different, but yeah, I guess the concept is the same!
Red beans can be replaced with any other bean. And rice can be replaced by bulgur, millet, quinoa, polenta. Vegan cooking is easier than you think. And those processed sausages are not necessary. Just add some different vegetables to the beans, like leek, spinach, kale, chard or any other vegetable that is in season. Keep to the seasons!
Page 140 if you have the book
Thanks for sharing!!
@@SweetPotatoSoul Thanks for making the book!
The printed recipe doesn’t include the bell pepper.
Add one diced green bell pepper. Will update the recipe. I was making the recipe from the cookbook, but the blog one was missing that :) Enjoy!
Another plus for beans is their affordability
Absolutely!
I thought red beans and rice was already vegan.
Not down south! They usually add bacon or another type of fatty pork & pork sausage
I think its better without the garlic. The garlic will dull the onion flavor.
Red beans and rice are already vegan. So why call it "vegan red bean and rice"???
Og suggests beef or chicken stock that's why
I thought red beans were a bean all their own. Why do you use kidney beans , why not use red beans for your red beans and rice recipe?
There are different types of red beans, but I prefer red kidney beans.
Diabetes in a bowl.
There’s hardly any refined sugar or dairy 🥛 in it. Try again.
@@kida758 Beans and rice turn to sugar the second you put them in your mouth.
Her saying that holy trinity is silly just say what it really is
It is actually called the holy trinity in cooking :)
Please stop using holy trinity so loosely
Er this has always been known as a VEGETARIAN DISH! Let’s have no more of this nonsense of calling everything vegan.
Traditionally it can contain ham hock and/or non-vegan andouille sausage. :) If there's no animal products, it can be called vegan!
