  • Before I can prepare the doors for epoxy primer all of the hardware/workings need to be removed. In this video I'll show you in a step by step way all of the parts and how to remove them. Remember to label everything and keep it all safe for easier re assembly.

Thanks John for taking the time to film this and great explanation and techniques for pulling the parts off without damage. Be doing similar tasks shortly so will greatly help.

Glad it will help you. Are you dismantling for a repaint or other reasons? Good time to inspect for rust areas in the door bottoms. Cheers John.

Great video, John, thanks. I would have left that wind lace in place- it's gonna be a bear to replace it. To patch the costly door seals I use 3M super strength molding tape with 3M black super weatherstrip adhesive to blend it all together- works very nicely, I'm impoverished but it looks pretty good afterwards and seals well. nice work.

Thanks Walt. Yeah I know its going to be a devil of a job. But I wanted to dismantle everything for the re paint process. Glad you're enjoying the videos. I have found Oem door seats for around 700 for the set. Due to the weak euro I may jump on those now.
      Cheers John 🍻

The regulator chassis are made from a light alloy called "Mazak" if I remember correctly, and is not easily prone to rust. A steel plate chassis is a good idea, however moisture can still creep in even with the inner plastic cover and the outer frame rubbers. Zinc treatment and then a coating of paint may keep rust at bay.

Very true. I was intending to zinc plate then yellow chromate for rust prevention. It would also give it a more factory appearance. Cheers John 🍻

Hi John. The chrome edge strips on the door window frame are not actually glued on, but do have a white putty-like seal, which stays soft for the most part. The hard part is removing the small screws! Your door locks have almost no rust, unlike the UK! Richard.

Thanks Richard! I'll take a closer look and see if they'll come off. Cheers John 🍻

They made those doors to hold together forever. Maybe that is why they
have that lovely sound when they shut.

They are built incredibly well. With a little servicing, they'll last indefinitely.

I can't wait to get them all stripped down and in primer. Cheers Mark. All the best John.

Everything you show on stripping the door is very basic, what you should show is how to take the internal door lock handles off as there is no screws visible.

Good point. Are you referring to the hidden screw under the plastic cover behind the handle? If so, on rebuild I will certainly go into that. Possibly sooner as my w108 is experiencing some trouble with the window regulator. Cheers John.
