I can’t believe how much in detail these guys remember the race
They lived it, day in day out. It must be close to their hearts and minds, such things are difficult to forget.
@@architranjan2361 Well when the drivers have raced 100-300 races, one would imagine that looking back; the individual races would blend together... They likely rewatched the race to jog their memory before being interviewed.
@@ballaking1000 I agree, I'm league racing and there are some outlier races I can remember easily and fondly, but most just blur themselves

If something happens out of the ordinary, you remember it, especially a chaotic race like this.

He was famous for commentating standing up, pacing excitedly around the commentary box with his old school "lip microphone", pointing at monitors, pointing at the windows... quite the sight to see! lol

And Gasly was Born the year Olivier Panis won his only Grand Prix. Interesting enough the same thing happen in MotoGP. The last French Grand Prix winner Regis Laconi won his only Grand Prix the year Fabio Quartararo the next French GP winner was born

Me too Buddy. Though why they even bothered to include Villeneuve in this, he had little to contribute to the race standings really.. though I guess he was in Monaco at the time and if I had the chance to meet with him and chat, yeah I'd do it too.. he's a colorful character.

I can't believe this video misses out the incredible record associated with this race: only the top three were classified finishers, giving this Grand Prix the highest rate of attrition of any F1 race ever.
7 drivers were classified (because they completed enough laps), but only three finished.
Frentzen was running fourth and last, so he pitted on the last lap.
Nice series! I guess Panis was not in Monaco this weekend: would have made this small documentary complete.

This actually might be my favourite ever F1 race. Had a bit of everything: Collisions, spins, tragedy, triumph and attrition. Still has the record for the fewest ever finishers with three.
Mine too actually. In a very well deserved tie with Belgium 98. Another equally bonkers race
1999 European GP was crazy too
I can remember watching this Monaco GP live, it was amazing. For me personally, it was Malaysia 2011, especially as I was a Verstappen senior fan, that race was crazy. And Brazil 2016, same reason, but jr. working the magic.

@@cereal-killer4455 Yeah. Not the person, but the driver. Was all-or-nothing, which was always fun to watch. And very gifted rain-driver (Schumacher himself said Jos was better in rain than Schumacher himself) By the way, love your internet-name, haha.
I remember watching this race like it was yesterday, Panis thoroughly deserved the win, from 14th to 1st, and he made quite a few passes too during the race. Probably not given enough credit by Coulthard. Panis had a habit of finishing races with attrition, he had a couple of 2nd place finishes in his career as well.
I was half expecting a “My name is Michael Schumacher and I have raced for Ferrari in the Monaco Grand Prix several times”
Oh and may I say Jean Alesi now looks better than I have ever looked in the peak of my life

Unfortunately they won't be able to interview Ayrton Senna. 😔 But you have just reminded me of another Brazilian Grand Prix story... I'd love for them to interview Nigel Mansell about his 1989 win. That was a bonkers race!

@@Cancoillotteman Yes, but A. other than Monza 95 this was the closest he was to the finish when retiring in the lead B. a win in Monaco will ALWAYS be considered legendary, no matter how lucky (i.e. benefiting from Hill's engine failure), unlike, say, a win in Canada.
@@alesi257 true on both accounts, but still if there is a legend attached to your name, you have to roll with it. Alesi was destined to "almost" win so many races ^^
I was sponsoring the Benetton that year, was the closest we came to a win all year. Still feel sorry for Jean ...

To be fair there were so few cars left towards the end of the race that there wasn't much to miss!
Not really. At the start we didn‘t really get to see Damon Hill passing Michael Schumacher for the lead.

@@Iggy3 Yeah, in those days TV directing was left to local teams of the countries F1 visited, so very often it was *much* worse than what we have now.

I think I'm going to like this series. I love hearing from past drivers. Formula 1 has such an interesting history. I'd love for them to interview Nigel Mansell about his 1989 Brazilian Grand Prix win. I never get tired of hearing about how he booked an early flight back to Europe because he was unconvinced about this weird new technology that Ferrari was trying to introduce where you change gears using a paddle on your steering wheel. That car hadn't lasted more than 20 laps during testing without breaking down. Annoyingly, as the race went on he drove past his team mate, who broke down as expected, but Mansell's car kept going! He ended up missing his flight because he had to stay until the chequered flag.... which was waved to him in 1st place. Then he cut his hand on the trophy. Also, Derek Warwick (who sometimes works as steward these days) nearly won that race in a mid-field running Arrows (designed by a young Ross Brawn). Warwick had a pitstop disaster and ended up only 5th. And Johnny Herbert finished 4th in his first race back since smashing up his feet in a bad accident. Crazy race! The three drivers are still around and I think they would make an interesting episode.

Kimi might still be racing in 30 years.
No matter how much it is impossible to overtake in Monaco i will always love it for races exactly like this.
The suspense of the possibility that a driver can bin it at any moment from the first lap till the last is fantastic.
Imo, don't change anything about the track.

I thought the TV director at Monaco was bad this year. In 1996 they missed Hill's overtake on Schumacher for the race lead at the start only to show cars zooming around at the back.
at least they didnt cut off middle of the overtake lol
Quite common back then, the director would have the whole field cycle through and then cut back to the leaders.

I had this race in VHS. In this race Alesi was spectacular. A pity his suspension. It would have been a brilliant win. But happy for Panis. It was his D day...
If you're only ever going to win one race, Monaco has to be the one. Well done Olivier. I remember this race as if it were yesterday.

It was Ligier I believe who stopped the earliest for dry tires which paid off. He's team deserve full credit as well

Monaco 82 is like the 92 edition, it's only memorable for the final five laps or so
Monaco 96 on the other hand was nuts from the lights to the flag with 8 drivers retiring in the first three laps to only three drivers taking the chequered flag

well back then that wasnt that surprising. different strategies, refueling was allowed. 90s had lots of races where the guys fighting at the front would be 20-40 seconds apart, only to come together in the end when the strategies were playing out. damon could have been going with lesser fuel than alesi.

The 90s really is the dark decade of F1. Aside from Suzuka 1990, San Marino/Imola & Adelaide 94, and Jerez 97, the entire decade is often ignored in conversations of great F1 seasons & races. In fact, it really was a great decade with some of the closest championships in F1 history, as well as two of the greatest wet weather drives in the history of the sport (Senna at Donnington 93, and Schumacher at Spain in 96).
The 1997 season was particularly remarkable: first year of a tyre war, last year before big technical rules changes, 6 (!) different teams in the position of fighting for a win at least once during the season (Prost and Arrows helped by Bridgestone), the two drivers in the fight for the championship never once on the podium together...
I love that Alesi was always the first driver to ask for slicks on a drying track, such an exciting driver to watch!

Nah. He'd have won a few races he should have won, for sure, but he was never in the position of fighting for a championship, performance wise.
@@Olivyay in the early 90s williams also offered him a contract, but he refused and went to ferrari, he could've won championships if he went to williams

Mansell then announced his retirement from Ferrari, leading to Ferrari needed a new driver
Alesi, who Williams hadn't announced as a driver, was getting edgy about why they had yet to announce him, found out Ferrari were interested in him
Williams, meanwhile, started talking to Mansell about a return
Ferrari offered Alesi a contract, which he signed.
Williams, sensing easy money, took Ferrari to court over the contract for a driver they didn't want, and won an out of court settlement to "allow" Alesi to go to Ferrari
Williams then sign Mansell.
We want these more often!!
Coulthard lost the race because McLaren choose to pit Mika Hakkinen for slicks before him,Irvine Panis pitted on lap 28,Hakkinen on lap 29,Coulthard on lap 30....well done Ron Dennis :(
I was born in 1991 I started watching Formula One at this very race grown-up listening to Murray Walker every weekend brings back memories of this race and many more what a legend rest in peace we all love you

Panis is one of the greatest "what if"s in F1 history imo. He was mighty in 97 until his accident, and then the Prost cars were awful thereafter.
