The '97 Hungarian GP remains the most painful moment in F1 I've ever experienced, Damon was in a league of his own in an utter shed of a car.
Да, не повезло Деймону но именно тогда он доказал что чемпион мира просто так не бывает.
It hurts me now as it did then. But what a drive.

18 minutes of my childhood hero. I've just realised that this season I'm the age Damon was in 1996.
I just read your comment and realized I’m turning 36 this summer, if I’m correct Damon also did in September, 1996. That was the first complete season I watched on TV, times flies so fast
And the first race of the season began on my birthday 10/03/1996 !
One of the most seriously underrated drivers ever IMHO. Given his lack of experience, his 1993 season was actually outstanding. He should have been a two-time champion - and would have been if the 1997 outcome had happened in '94.
I remember his first win - I cried. I also cried in Spa '98, Hungary '97, and of course, Japan '96. These races still choke me up.
His treatment by Frank Williams is the one thing I couldn't forgive him for. Yes, I'm still a Damon fangirl after all these years lol.
Spa 98 was mine first race i visited
He started at 31, that’s 2 years younger than Ricciardo is now
I'm still a Damon fan girl too 😂. No shame. He was the best.
What a career considering he started his F1 journey age 31!
To put this into perspective. had Damon made his debut at the same age of Verstappen (18), he would've began his F1 career in 1978.
And had Verstappen made his debut at the age of 31, he would've start his career in 2028 (the same year his actual contract will expired).
It's proof that you're never too late (or too early) to start your career.
@@Abbaschand if Damon Hill joined F1 in 1978 so which F1 team would he joined at the time ?
341 F1 race entries by Damon Hill more than Alonso/Barrichello race entries if he entered earlier
Probably backmarker team
@@Abbaschand Verstappen debut was not 18 yrs, it was 17 in 2015 with Toro Rosso Renault
@@Abbaschand I know, but typical stereotypes from commoners that it's too late to become an F1 drivers.
To old for this sport! In that times they race until 60 age..
Not to mention each legendary moment underscored and heightened by the equally legendary Murray Walker
One of the best and most charismatic drivers ever. His duels with Schumacher remain unforgotten and are part of my childhood.
Same!
Will never forget this. He was my favorite Schumacher rival
I was 17 when Damon won the championship in ‘96. Got up so early and burst into tears and then ran laps around the dining table in celebration 😂
Damon was my hero growing up and I have so many fond memories of being little and watching him on TV with my Dad. The way he held his own against incredible teammates like Prost, Senna and Mansell was amazing in itself, and then to win the title in 96 was well deserved. So glad he’s a commentator and still around
For me, one of the most underrated drivers. Teammates with Prost Mansell and Senna, Hill was never that much slower than them. Had some amazing results in the wet too.
I rarely cry, but Damon made me cry twice. First in 1997 in when I was 11 and he lost the Hungarian GP, and one year later when he won in Belgium. No regrets, and he'll remain my hero no matter what :)
One of tne reasons I like Damon is that he's very honest and eloquent in the way he speaks. A lot of drivers, at least in English, seem to struggle to fully translate their feelings in and around the car, or just don't speak honestly or openly. Hill does on the other hand. Plus, I love when he's paired with Johnny Herbert, they make a great duo
His father was also an elegant and classy gentleman. It runs in the blood
Hill was the first driver to make me an F1 fan as a kid, along with the iconic Rothmans/Racing livery on the Williams. I was too young to appreciate the pressure Damon was under when he stepped in as Williams team leader, wrestling with the combined legacies of both Graham Hill and Ayrton Senna on Damon's shoulders. In retrospect, to come out of that pressure with a world title is truly impressive. And to then prove himself with that Hungary '97 drive for Arrows was one step better than being world champion, even if it must not have felt like it for Damon at the time.
F1 has never again got close to the excitment of the Hill years for me. Hill vs Schumacher felt like the most important thing in the world back then.
As a youngster here in the US, I remember cheering on Damon Hill in the 90's. Although, I didn't get a chance to watch very many Formula 1 races, his was one of the few names I remember from that era. I was one to cheer on the underdog typically. Michael the top man of the era, and a name I grew tired of hearing. Damon was the antithesis of Michael, probably why I liked him. I enjoyed this one!
My dad once told me that the moment Hill proved to be a great driver was when he managed to get that Arrows to the podium.
It's a shame that he was in F1 for only 8 years, he could've left much bigger impact in the sport.
Oo
The rest of his 1997 season was utter trash.
@@sanfordcurtis8242 Hill did wonders in that Arrows. Their last ever F1 podium, delivered on 100% merit.
His QALY in the season finale at Jerez is kinda legendary 😎
@@bfapple if the car wasn’t breaking down, he was crashing it. He only had one decent race in 1997.
Always my hero and such a fantastic bloke to meet no airs and graces no ego and considerably better than he was ever given credit for
Between 1992-1996, Damon Hill won 21 races. Michael Schumacher won 22. Respect Hill.
Hill was in dominant machinery in all these years 1992 to 1996. Schumacher was only in proper race winning machinery from 1994.
@@hishamhilal8332 Only 94 and 95 at that. That 96 ferrari was a dnkey of a car
@@hishamhilal8332 so you literally just skipped 92 and 93 when he was on the podium several times and so on?
@@hishamhilal8332 AG ASSEBLIEF. Schumacher was in an equally competitive car if not the most reliable car for all the years he won his championships.
@@TRTHSofficial Clearly not because of the car
The 1994 Williams has to be arguably the most beautiful liveried car, ever.
All time favorite F1 driver, loved him all the way!
My childhood hero. Still my favorite as a 35 year old. Love the work he does for disability awareness as well.
He was my favourite driver back then I have a signed Hill shirt from when he became world champ
One of the most underrated drivers from the 90's.
He was one of the most underrated f1 drivers ever, his father would have been so proud of him.
I remember screaming at the tv in ‘97.
One of my most favorite drivers.
though his post-racing opinions may not be as reputable, he is an undisputed talent for a late bloomer like him
I've only been following F1 for a few years. What opinions exactly does he hold that are unreputable? Not trying to detract from his great achievements, just curious.
@@jorgeayala1992 yeah I’m a bit confused too haven’t really heard much about this. Isn’t he also still a pundit on sky?
@@jorgeayala1992 nothing as far as I can tell... Bean is probably just virtue signaling.
@@jorgeayala1992 He is super Hamilton biased and super biased for all british drivers in fact. That alone would not be a problem if it wasn't because he shares all his biased opinions on the Official F1 RUclips Channel, a channel that should be internationalized and where there shouldn't be any bias.
@@benkmarchant Have you ever heard of the F1 podcast featuring him by any chance?
Why is Brazil 96 always overlooked? Dominant win in wet to dry conditions and one of Hills best wins
Legend and a lovely bloke too. 👍🏻
A very underrated champion
I love how obvious Hill's passion/excitement for racing is. I get the same energy from Pato O'Ward
Top 10 Ron Dennis moment next please, do it for the team principals too!
This would be pretty cool actually. Frank Williams, Ross Brawn, Flavio Briatore, Enzo Ferarri, Colin Chapman, Jack Brabham, Ken Tyrell, Eddie Jordan - lots of huge characters there!
@@samacw SO TRUE MAN i hope they hear us!
And while they're at it they should do a "Top ten moments of Brilliance"of the bloke who drives the transporter........
Damon Hill winning the British Grand Prix in 1994, a very special moment for him. To make it even better, Princess Diana presented that Golden Trophy to Hill on the Podium that day.
My favourite driver growing up - crazy that he started so late
About that 1995 Australian GP win, there's a video somewhere of 3rd placed Gianni Morbidelli (driving for Footwork) in the press conference joking about smelling something burning and he was praying his car kept going before realising it was 2nd place Panis' Ligier that was starting to blow its engine. Pretty lucky for him to get to the finish line in time as you can see in this video his car was puffing smoke quite frequently
He's a legends and he become a world champion
In the last round in Jerez in the 1997 championship Hill qualified P4(just 0.058 off Pole) behind Schumacher and the two Williams drivers on that Arrows(Bizzarely all 3 set an identical time). That was another moment of brilliance from Hill!!!
Actually it was shoving purple for Damon but then something happened, I don't remember what. Propably someone who wasn't pushing blocked or something like that
@@janiandelin93 the memory is vague , but pretty sure it was Katayama off the track near the end of the lap - he lifted slightly for the yellow as he went by.
My favourite f1 driver. I was so upset at the end of 94 when schumacher took him out in the last race. Then in 95 he lost mostly due to slower pit stops by williams crew.
At Spa in '98 both Hill and Schumacher proved three-time world champion Sir Jack Brabham correct: you win the race at the slowest speed possible.
What a lovely tribute to Damon... thankyou formula 1... a true great whatever the naysayers say.
We all love us some Damon !
Specially the fact that he started so late makes him such an impressive driver. People might easily dismiss him but that's just because they don't know the whole story.
Hill said in his autobiography that he sensed Senna was driving the car at Suzuka 94 for him…!
possibly my favorite champ. nice guys DO finish first sometimes.
He is definitely not a nice guy.
@@Qsrjeiwjwj you are probably right, I was referring to his image.
@@jordanimatedstreaming are you deluded?
You always knew the drivers Schumacher was intimidated by when he went into destruction derby mode.
Today my son asked me who Damon hill was. Very excited to show him this and make sure he’s got the right appreciation
1994 moral champion
Damon was amazing and still his love him
Absolute legend. World's fastest geography teacher. Criminally underrated.
Damon at his best was the best 😎
I started watching F1 in 94 as a 11y old. Only knowing Senna i supported him but after that cheered on for Damon. And been a fan of Damon since that first season.
That Hungarian GP in the arrows showed me why i was such a big fan of him!
Moments in my life that will never be forgotten... a sunny day at Silverstone watching Schumacher and Hill, with Murray Walker in my ear on the radio.
...and of course....Michael Schumacher! * goosebumps*
Can F1 Do a Moment of Ronnie Peterson brilliance
Damon hill is an iconic driver he is truly one of the greatest driver in F1 Suzuka 1994 just the fastest lap race fight for win unbelievable, who was hill teammate after the tragedies lost in F1 of all time Señor Senna,? Jordan first and only 1-2 in f1 was Iconic hill leads Schumacher 2 for comfortable legend 1-2, thanks for such an iconic F1 career 🤩🤩🤩
Jordan's, win was lucky !
also Eddie Jordan gave orders for Ralf Schumacher to not fight for the win. It's one of the reasons Schumacher left Jordan, he always felt sour over it. I don't blame him, I would've fought and disobeyed team orders, winning is the only reason you exist to be told you're not allowed to fight for 1st is very disrespectful to a driver to the fans
@@speedmann194 The conditions in Spa 98 were extremely awful with tons of cars DNF and the biggest crash ever at the start. Being 1-2 was miraculous for a team like Jordan, it would have been suicidal to let the drivers take the risk to crash themselves in the end of the race.
Graham Hill was the first driver I ever heard of, so I always had this thing for Damon
1997 Hungarian GP was the best finish on 2nd position for Yamaha as engine supplier in Formula 1 World Championship until now. I think Yamaha's already said thanks to Damon Hill and Arrows F1 team.
Japan was even more remarkable knowing that the team couldn't change all his tyres
96 season was my favourite, the most underated world champion ,people forget he was also the test and development driver for williams
My favourite of all time.
Suzuka 94 was one of the greatest wins by any driver!
115 starts 22 wins 42 podiums gave schumi a great battles
i really like him
Massively underrated driver. He's up there with the best of them. That Japan 1994 drive was on another level considering he did it on only three new tyres because the pit crew couldn't get the fourth one off. He was robbed of the title in Adelaide in 94. I remember feeling sick to the stomach about that race.
The question was asked to Prost: for him Damon Hill is an underrated driver..
14:03 If hill didn’t have the electronic problems of his arrows in Hungary 1997 he would’ve won his first race for arrows and his first as a defending world champion
“Raceday brought classic spa weather”

One of the most deserved World Champions
I defy the F1 production to make a top 10 moments of brilliance for Ralf Schumacher or Heinz-Harald Frentzen!
Or Eddie Irvine😎
He is the founding member of TeamLH
He was my favorite...
Blaming Schumacher for every Hill's misfortune in 3..2..1..
Damon Hill blames Michael Schumacher for the Ukraine conflict probably
Maybe not the greatest of champions but that race in the Arrows is stuff of legend.
1998 F1 season with modern points
(6)Hill:93 points
(7)HHF:91 points
(8)Fisichella:88 points
(9)Wurz:87 points
Please do a top ten moments of Eddie Irvine Brilliance😎😎
Yeah I remember that Spa race, when Ralf was charging Damon but Eddie stopped him from overtaking Damon.
Some of these are arguably forgettable, but the clear top three in my view are Suzuka 94, Interlagos 96 (not mentioned in the video, surprisingly) and Hungary 97. While the 1995 season was poor overall, his victories in Argentina and Hungary that year are impressive (more so than Adelaide), and he also had an extraordinary pole position in Monaco. Speaking of Monaco, it's the reverse of the British GP: the latter he accomplished what his father didn't, whereas he didn't win Monaco where his father was a legend (despite the 95 pole and a dominant drive in 1996).
This is my childhood hero.
Hill wasn't the best driver. No one would claim he was, he was inconsistent and prone to mistakes but he competed with Schumacher, Prost, Mansell and Senna and could at least challenged them. But on his day, Japan '94 for me is best proof of this, he could beat them and that for me is why he remains my favourite.
making F1 debut at the age of 31 is inspiring
1994 Australian grand Prix drove brilliant to put Michael under so much pressure, people forget mansell last ever grand Prix win
Hill was the most underrated driver of his era, he was a brilliant test driver by the time he started racing for Williams in 93 after nearly two seasons as a test driver and he knew the nuances of car set up and how to get the car to do the work and not have to throw it around like a go kart. He won races in 1993 and led others convincingly and lost through mechanical failures and team orders and could have won the title, 1994 was maybe his best season in the context of what happened after Ayrton Senna died and taking the challenge to Schumacher with a difficult handling car and was robbed at the last race after driving his best ever race at Suzuka in the wet. He did make a mistake or two in 1995 but the car while quick wasn’t reliable and Williams weren’t sharp enough with strategy, Hill was actually leading many races and Schumacher didn’t pass him on the track but in the pits, that side of it is often overlooked. But Hungary 1997 was his best drive in the dry, the Arrows was six seconds slower at the start of the season and just a few races later he led by 35 seconds, that was where his car development and testing knowledge had came to the fore and his smooth style and he was so unlucky not to win and then did win with Jordan who’d never won before. It’s just a shame his career ended poorly, 1999 was a difficult season with the harder Bridgestone tyres, he couldn’t drive as smoothly as he wanted as he wasn’t getting the feel from the tyres, his motivation died as he knew it didn’t suit him.
He got outpaced by Ralf Schumacher in 1998.🤷♂
Deserved more titles as so many champions do. Incredible pressure with an already champion last name. Another loyal driver shafted by the cunning frank williams.
If Only Damon take the offer from Ferrari or McLaren and sign with either of them, he would have another championship.
Would have been beaten by either Mika or Michael so no.
@@Qsrjeiwjwj neither of them have won the championship for the team at that point. Mika didn't even won a race yet at that time. So Damon have a real chance to being a number 1. And Michael was out for almost an entire year in 99.
Mika and Michael would’ve absolutely trounced Damon.
@@rockzs74r Mika would have completely humiliated Hill. Since his accident in 95, Ron Dennis felt super close to him and would have always made him the number one, or let them fight.
He retired many years ago m8.
Excellent driver
"Classic Spa weather" 😂
Underrated driver. Class act.
Damon is one of the reasons why I love F1. He´s such a character. Charismatic, lovely, talented, respected king and more. I´d love to see him in the padock in Brazil someday. He´s my favorite.
A childhood hero and really fortunate to have met him at Autosport and his Book signing. Really nice guy and his Book "Watching the Wheels" is a great read going into things which happened behind the scenes. Would love to have seen both him and Jenson Button racing together. Also that Spa 1998 race was magical
The 1998 Belgium Grand Prix will always be my all time favourite ,GP, it's become a legendary race , tho I don't think David Coulthard will quite share the same enthusiasm , after Michael stormed into the McLaren pits threatening to lay one on him , but Damon winning , both the Jordans taking first and second place what can you say , Absolute Classic.
Criminally underrated driver
Nah he's overrated
It couldn't have been any other race but Japan '94 as no. 1 in this list.
Hill only got into car racing in his 20s, he was on bikes before. If he got into cars at the same age as Schumacher, Hamilton or Max he would be a scary talent.
Smoothest operator
Hockenheim 1993: nearly the whole grandstand felt with Damon.
Hockenheim 1997: he pulled out an amazing overtake on (I do not remember, sorry...) into the Nordkurve. Not the best overtaking spot, but he did it.
Under-rated. The end.
#1: Being the son of Graham Hill
Damon...... RIU!!!!!!!
It's kind of insane that a guy with that few races managed to compete so well with Prost in 1993. He was a COMPLETE rookie. I genuinely think he had a few moments (Japan 94) where he was better than the best, but he certainly lacked that cut-throat attitude and maybe the ability to perform like Senna or Schumacher week-in, week-out. Brilliant driver, nonetheless.
I'm pretty sure that with today's reliability requirements and overall strong pace baseline of the different teams/cars, that two clear laps win will never be repeated.
Well it did happen then olny because of some chaotic stuff. So even then it was unimaginable.
I still count Hill as the true champ in 94
And the true winner of the Hungarian GP in 1997.
Should show that even older starters can do well in F1. Too much emphasis on young drivers nowadays
You sure? Kimi retired at 42. Alonso is still going at 41.
