I hope so... Until now his best performance on a DT album was on the self titled one, sadly fucked by the mix.
I guess this is Mike Mangini completely fused with DT. The sound's so solid and I think Mangini really opened his wings and flew higher than ever.

@@ewitsdonovan But for several albums and quite a few years, he didn't really write as a part of the band. Petrucci demoed stuff up pretty fully, rather than bringing half-finished songs in and working with the others to finish them. Mike M. based his parts on the programmed beats. And he didn't just replace a drummer - he came in on drums, but DT had in some ways lost their leader. Portnoy had the strongest personality in the whole band, and was their only real Rock Star. Without him, they had to reconceive their whole internal dynamic, and their whole way of relating to fans.

hypersonic isn't that jaw dropping in terms of the drum parts by portnoy. he has been using that lick for 30 odd years.

Still sounds fake to me. Listen to Virgil's, Simon Phillips or Vinnies snare. They sound authentic. This doesn't to me.
Listen to Mike's drums on the instrumental album Into The Great Divide. Much better.

Finally the drum production sounds similar to the Portnoy DT albums we're all used to. This is the most DT sounding music I've heard since Mike left.

The one @0:05 ? yeah. I had to slow it down because my ears were telling me his left hand went from a tom to the snare in a 1/32nd at the end of it, and I would probably break my arm if I tried to do that. No...his last two 32nd notes of that 17|16 measure were on the bass drum, which allowed him time to reposition his hands to hit the snare/crash at the same time on 1.

@@DanielSantosAnalysis Here's hoping, I want to try and avoid the single releases and listen to the album as a whole - I lasted 30 seconds when the teaser was released! Haha.
@@RazorEd11 same here, but I feel like it's not necessary to deprive myself entirely lol. Maybe listen to one or two singles only a few times and then wait until the release? Or only listen to the songs very sparcely so we don't get too used to them.
@@RyanxDunn When Distance over time finally dropped I already feel as though I'd become completely familiar with nearly half the album [Untethered Angel, fall into the light & paralyzed] so what was left felt more like an EP than a full album, haha. I think I'm definitely going to be more self disciplined and avoid all spoilers! We'll see....

@@TrebleForTheBass Ehhh, I very much disagree. I really don’t like the way his drums sounded on the new LTE, pretty flat tone with little power compared to his drum sound on the older LTE releases and DT releases imo. I feel like his drumming still shines through the not so great sound, which is entirely evident during Portnoy’s incredible live concerts. I definitely love Portnoy and his drumming, but I don’t think his drum sound has been that great for a while. Most releases of Portnoy’s after DT have had a disappointing drum sound in my opinion. I miss the days when he constantly changed his drum sound from album to album (specifically every album from Images and Words to Octavarium). After that, it was just okay. I would love if he used the Train of Thought or Awake drum sounds some time again.
While fanboys endlessly debate over MP vs MM one should know that this drum score was written by Lars Urlich.
