Seeing Miraidon disintegrating everything even with not very effective damage was insane
I imagine how weird it must be for a singles player to see a Pokémon like Miraidon be considered mid in VGC, while Zamazenta is one of the stronger ones.
It is weird. Wondering why seeing a Miraidon win is surprising
Yeah it’s so weird
Especially considering I've been hearing the opposite from vgc players talking about it before it was legal
When you can bring Calyrex-Shadow instead, it's hard to compete.
@@VegaPhil It’s as Freezai said: opportunity cost. Sure, miraidon has an insane amount of power, but so does calyrex shadow and ice. Not to mention but, like Freezai showed, rillaboom is on 1/3 of teams. That a 1/3 of teams that not only drastically weaken your miraidon but also take away the passive effect of denying sleep moves like amoongus’s spore. On top of that, it’s vulnerable to priority. More specifically, fake out which is one of the best and most important moves in VGC. Not to mention that all your electric types moves, your most powerful moves, are all completed negated by simply being a ground type. So why use miraidon where calyrex has so much more to offer, is easier to use, and has about the same if not more power? The reason why this team won was because no one expected anyone to seriously use miraidon and, therefore, a lack of ground types. It was an anti-meta pick and it worked perfectly. Of course, with this miraidon victory, much more teams will be picking up more ground types and respecting miraidon.

Funny thing I'd like to point out is in the same weekend over japan there was a huge Pokemon TCG tournament where in a new format, an underrated miraidon deck, went and won the entire tournament.
"The future is now old man"
Wait was it a deck based after the Miraidon ex league deck??
@@jr.c.4250 It used that Miraidon ex as like the main card of the deck, but the rest of the deck was mostly filled with cards outside of the deck. Stuff like the Regieleki VMAX were taken out in favour of other powerful lightning ex’s and V’s such as Iron hands ex, Raikou v and Raichu v.
You should do a video over why Zamazenta is better in VGC than Zacian, I bet that the graphic at 0:41 brought a lot of question marks to people not super familiar with doubles
Probably because Zacian was hard nerfed coming into gen 9.
@@whalerwhaler2759 Zama got hit with a nerf also, reason is mainly just that its body press hits super hard and intimidate/snarl/parting shot etc dont effect it, meaning it can pump out way more damage while also being tankier
fr, as a singles player I was so confused looking at that
I believe like a lot of it is because Body Press can one shot Incineroar, and not much can do that
Zacian being forced into rusted sword means it cant run clear amulet, so it has a much worse time against incineroar compared to all of the other physical restricteds, e.g. calyrex-ice, groudon, ect zamazenta has that same weakness, except it uses iron defence + body press so it doesnt really care, instead it can boost in the face of multiple parting shots and intimidates, and is still really fast and really strong, and boosting its defence means it’s really solid into all of the other physical restricteds, where its teammates can cover the special restricteds
Miraidon: "How many layers of damage are you on?"
Calyrex: "Like, maybe 5 or 6 right now my dude"
Miraidon "You are like a little baby. Watch this."
*Recreates the big bang with a +50%STAB, +50% electric terrain, +33% hadron engine electric move backed by great SpAtk* (and i forgot terra electric and choice specs)
Electric terrain sadly isn’t a 50% boost anymore
You forgot terra electric for double stab-
@@helion_ut Also choice specs
Its around 433 base power if ur using choice specs(with electro drift). Ye, 433, i tested it on an applin woch is 0.25x effective and it died 36%.
Yea, with +100% STAB from double electric type with Terra, +50% from Choice Specs, +30% from Electric Terrain, +33% Hadron Engine (all of these stacking multiplicatively except the Terra but that is why I put those into the 100% package) we have a multiplication of:
5.187 times the damage.
Meaning Electro Drift which has a nice 100 BP to work with you are staring at the equivalent of a Pokemon having to use a 518 BP move to get the same damage without STAB.
So yea, even hitting a 4 times resist, that is still around 129 BP in damage.
Meaning that Tera Electric Choice Specs Miraidon still does the same damage to a Raging Bolt (with 12 EV's in SpD to make it a nice clean Def/SpD of 111) using Electro Drift than a Kingambit using Kowtow Cleave on the same Raging Bolt with no Supreme Overlord buff, no Black Glasses and no Terra obviously, but having the same investment in it's attacking stat.
So it was worth it to let him steal my sandwiches after all

I love Ogerpon's little skipping animation while using Ivy Cudgel
Who could have thought that using the power of switching made Miraidon OP.
This feels like looking at Singles.
Its getting banned in singles apparently from what I've seen 😭😭
Not a single calyrex in finals, nice to see it
Still deserves nerfs
Everyone was overprepared for it, which in turn made the miraidon break trough easier since players had to allocate a lot of resources just to counter both horses.

Honestly, I'm not surprised in the slightest. Miraidon has been proven to be one of the strongest Pokemon to date since Day 1, and even considering VGC landscapes, it has so many multipliers that a lot of its weaknesses can just be muscled through. In the future, I'm expecting to see a couple more Ground Teras on restricteds, or maybe the rise of Raichu/Pachirisu

I find competitive Pokemon absolutely and endlessly fascinating, it;s just the most insane thing you'd never even remotely consider as part of your own strategies, while I'll never play it I'll always respect those who do
0:50 One big thing to notice - out of just restricted Pokémon only Miraidon and Terapagos affect the Terrain, which - obviously there are some other Terrain Setters out there, but it is interesting factor when you have Koraidon, Groudon, Kyogre and Terapagos affecting the Weather. And it's notably the one Terrain that has extremely good synergy with Rain.
Like Electric mons will always be good in Water/Rain dominated metas. And with Pelipper also being common here - this is just all stacking up for Miraidon. I wonder also how much Rillaboom's nerf was factoring into it, because I probably would expect it being more common in this meta, if Grassy Glide stayed the same power.
3:00 But it does kinda make Calyrex somehow predictable. Just being weak to Wide Guard, creates some openings to defend against it's signature moves, allowing to chip away some damage, with good prediction. Similarly to how Koraidon probably gets partly checked by Rain and Miraidon slows down with its damage output with Rillaboom being present. And obviously Terapagos shuts almost all top restricted Pokemon, with its immunity to Shadow-Caly and Teraform-Zero.
6:00 On the side note - I love how commonly used Farigiraf is used. Very Mega Mawile, Mega Kanga, Pelipper, Torkoal vibe, where seemingly underwhelming forgotten Pokémon becomes usable. In this case we have some presence of good old Girafarig through it's evolution.
6:55 With how uncommon Hazards are these days - you should never overlook any Pokemon that can swap tbh.
7:45 It is nice to see a tournament without Landorus being common in the top.
Seeing Miraidon win isn’t a surprise for me tbh, I have seen its sheer power in online tournaments so I wasn’t surprised to see it doing well. (I did expect Calyrex-S win so bit surprised on that but seeing Miraidon win wasn’t the most outlandish thing for me.)
I'm not stunned, that thing is Tapu Koko and Regieleki on steroids.
I'm very happy to see such a creative format take shape. Can't wait to see what else it has in store

"The future is now, old man." - Miraidon
It's cool, but it would have been so fitting for Rajan Bal to use Raging Bolt
the choice specs stab spam at it again
bro ting-lu boutta come back with a vengance
Whimsicott
I think ppl are gonna respect Miraidon more, and this will put it on its proper place upon players’ perceptions. Imo, Ting-Lu is gonna rise, because of it’s excellent matchup against Miraidon, Calyrex-S, and even Terapagos due to it’s enormous special bulk. Meanwhile, I believe Koraidon will rise, as it having what is essentially 3 stab options without the need to Tera for that is incredible. Add on to that the variety in sets and itens Korai can use, from Sash, to Clear Amulet, to Scarf, to AV, and perhaps even Covert Cloak, and I think Koraidon is gonna dominate later stages of Reg G
I feel like Miraidon is still underrated, even with this showing, because it also has defensive synergy with another Pokemon that used to be a VGC Staple, Iron Hands.
Sure, it might struggle against Incineroar, however that's where Miraidon comes in. On top of this, there's one defensive dynamic about this that people aren't considering, their differing speed stats.
Because Miraidon is fast and Iron Hands is slow, the opponent has to take into consideration who to go after with their ground type attack. Sure, they can use Earthquake, but there aren't many Pokemon who can Ohko them with their naturally high bulk, then there's the matter of speed. Iron Hands is fast in Trick Room, while Miraidon is fast outside of it, meaning one of them will always be a threat, and Ursaluna, one of the better Ground Type Pokemon right now, doesn't even beat Iron Hands in trick room, at best it speed ties.
And this isn't even considering their options for Tera. While Miraidon will almost exclusively go Tera Electric to become a bigger menace to society, Iron Hands is much more difficult to lock down because it has so many functioning Tera Types to use, since it prefers defensive tera types.
And simply going "Tera Ground, easy fix" doesn't work either, as Iron Bundle exists too, as you mentioned, and it threatens both Tera Ground and one of the "counters" to Miraidon you mentioned, being Rillaboom.
I can totally see Iron Hands, Iron Bundle, Miraidon, and Farigiraf becoming a common core.
Hands and Bundle fell in usage for a reason. If you want Fake Out support for your Mirai Incin is better. If you want speed control you run Whimsicott. Having more pokemon on your team that rely on eterrain is just not good.
@@eldegoss32 Actually, the reason for their inclusion has nothing to do with their abilities, it's merely an added benefit.
Iron Bundle has good Offensive Type Synergy with Miraidon, BoltBeam is an infamous type coverage term for a reason, and Iron Hands is Bulkier than Incineroar, hits harder, has longer longevity due to Drain Punch, and, more importantly, is slower than Incineroar, as Incineroar can almost never outspeed either Ursaluna in Trick Room, which Iron Hands outspeeds one and speed ties the other, giving it better odds to threaten them. If you were to compare Iron Hand's role in the synergy to any Pokemon, it would be Amoongus
Miraidon is truly the king in Singles and doubles.
I can't wait to see how great the mon goes.

The callback to false swipe was nice
As a Gen 9 Balanced Hackmons player, one of the few things I try to do is make sure that the pokemon I'm using has a different ability than it's supposed to have. In my mind, if I have to use an ability that originally came on the pokemon (as long as that ability isn't banned), I'm better off using another pokemon.
Miraidon was the first pokemon that took that formula and broke it in half. Still to this day it blows my mind that the only thing you have to do to base Miraidon to make it broken in BH is give it Rising Voltage. The ability was banned mostly for that reason (and Tera too to some extent).
Gg on the random bats success, but these style of videos will always be my favorite
I was always a believer in the beginning
Love my motorcycle alpha dragon
During the first preview of Rajans Team I remember thinking to myself „this team might be the one to win the whole thing. It’s a very good anti-meta call“. Watching Aaron and Wolfe have fun while commentating added a lot to that matchup, and I immediately had my favorite for the tournament, rooting for him whenever he came up on stream.
I’m also very happy that the first tournament of Reg G didn’t even have a Cali form in the finals. This might help with ensuring variety in the rest of the format.
I'm gonna need someone to explain to me how Zama is used more than fucking Groudon lmfao. I'm assuming it's because Koraidon outclasses Groudon as a sun setting physical attacker restricted mon, but what makes Zama appealing?
Body press doesn’t get affected by intimidate and with an iron defense you immediately get to plus 3. The when people lower stats they rely on intimidate for physical attack or ion deluge for special attack and besides chien-pao’s ability, who has a horrible matchup, nobody uses defense lowering moves in vgc meaning it’s gonna be there a while.
@@trainerrichard6859 did you mean eerie impulse not ion deluge lol
Groudon also has the big issue that it NEEDS to run Clear Amulet (like all the phisical attacker restricteds) to not get completely neutered by Incineroar, meaning it's now stuck with no AV, no recovery, no wide lens to get an accurate Precipice Blade, no scarf to fix its speed tier either, and a pretty awkard mono-ground typing that leaves it weak to a bunch of top meta threats including the aforementioned Rillaboom.
The added issue of Groudon (and to some degree, Koraidon as well) is that you set Sun. "But that's good!" you will think, until you remind that Flutter Mane and Raging Bolt are commonly used by non-sun teams as well, and you're giving them their ability for free.
Incindentally, due to how mediocre most future paradoxes are, you don't run into this risk using Miraidon, and Kyogre also doesn't care much as the only water type people run "off rain teams" are Ogerpon (which shuts Kyogre down regardless) and Urshifu (which you can neuter with your own Ogerpon or Amoongus)
@@worldiefeard8396 the other thing about groudon is that it's just a strictly worse koraidon for all intents and purposes. sun setting is one thing - you can play around it to give yourself a slight advantage by allowing your flutter to hold sash or specs or scarf instead of booster. the other thing is just that koraidon does an obscene amount of damage compared to groudon. if groudon were primal it'd be a different story but groudon gets massively outclassed in terms of stat spread, matchups, and moves. (relatively) slow earthquakes don't do anything when rillaboom and incin are around. the only two pokemon groudon has some advantage against are bolt and miraidon, the former often terastalising to water or fairy and the latter being an off-meta pick.
ogerpon and urshifu rapid also block out groudon HARD with their faster stab supereffective moves, and there's no good offensive tera for groudon to really make an impact. it'd a good all-rounder and has decent supportive potential, but in restricted vgc formats, mons are picked based off slim margins. calyrex-s is top tier because of how faster and powerful it is (+spread), calyrex-i is top tier because of how obscene it is in trick room. that's the two main meta forms of speed jostling between restricted threats. fast + tailwind, or trick room. groudon doesn't do either.
zacian is unviable rn bc as a physical attacker it gets screwed by intimidate. zamazenta doesn’t have that same problem since it’s mainly relying on body press for damage
I’m glad Miraidon is getting more recognition in VGC competitive. Even though Calyrex is definitely more powerful I like using Miraidon more.
Tbh "VGC players say this pokemon will not be good. That pokemon is good anyways" has to be my favorite genre. First happened with Amongus after Ogerpon came and now Miraidon😂

Dracovish be like “look at what they need to mimic a fraction of my power”
1:13 Wolfey is the only one who predicted that Miraidon would get any love. Because the man loves making weird teams.
I think its so cool how there's this whole meta since the beginning of SV, with stuff like Flutter Mane, Ogerpon later and even Urshifu-R after that that you can 100% count on them to be in 100% of tournaments, but the strats that keep having the best performance are stuff like FUCK IT WE ICE STAB Articuno and the "oh no they have a ground type" Miraidon, which funnily enough, works because they usually don't have a ground type (F Ting lu)
That really showcases the beauty of competitive pokémon, which is heavily defined by a very strict, and after some time, pretty laid out meta, yet upsets like this can and will happen, not only on current metas but on old metas as well. People out here saying GAME FREAK can't balance the game but honestly, they're just missing the best part of competitive pokémon.

Lmao I didn't watch the tournament but seeing Wolfey making memes about Miraidon makes me somewhat aware of it's uprising. 😂
something i'm curious about is whether miraidon could bring iron hands back into the meta. it's main weakness was that it basically didn't have an ability, so it was objectively worse than incineroar in every way, but being an electric type with quark drive gives it a nasty damage output so i think it could work as a highly aggressive fake out user on offensive teams (you could maybe run it slow as a trick room sweeper). terrain + quark drive boosted stab wild charge from adamant iron hands is pretty terrifying
Oh sure, but when I use volt switch spam in doubles I still lose.

I’m a little surprised that Zacian hasn’t taken off yet. Given it’s great typing, move pool, and stats, it seems like a good anti-meta threat.
I wonder if Lightning Rod Raichu will make a return to the meta just as a means of dealing with Miraidon? Between Fake Out, Nuzzle, and its other status moves, it’s a great support mon. And Tera Fairy would make it immune to both of Miraidon’s stabs. Togedemaru might also be a decent option.
And maybe something like Assault Vest Groudon will rise in usage? It would pair up well with mons like Flutter Mane and Roaring Moon if those still get any usage? We’ll just have to see how things play out.
The issue is incineroar nukes the attack stat of Zacian and Groudon. Neither can take off with that intimidating menace running around.
if zacian-crowned can held a item it would be a good anti meta but it doesn't
it loses to incineroar who's on 60% of the teams
groudon also loses to inci without clear amulet
Incineroar gatekeeps so many mons and people still refuse to admit him and intimidate need nerfs/reworks in pokemon. GF must have been high on drugs when making incin and a lot of these new mons cause powercreep is insane gen 9 and incin is unaffected.
