Thank you so much for mentioning things like seeing the battery voltage while charging get up to 9v as this was also making me question the process but you have given me a baseline to work from, thank you!

Quick little hot tip. Make sure the wires you use are of good quality. I jacked around for months trying to figure out what was wrong with my charger. The charger was fine. When I finally checked voltages under load at the battery terminals, then at the charger terminals, low and behold, they were different. Changed out the wires and everything made sense.

What brand wires did you use?

@Miami King, I initially ordered and struggled fruitlessly with YXQ wires. Don't get those. Finally I got some new alligator clips and banana connectors, and used some pretty good speaker wires I had laying around to make my own. I had to do some soldering because the aligator clips I used weren't quite big enough.

@@billmansikka4100 I had the same issue Bill, and I can't stress enough how important it is to have good leads for this type of project, don't go cheap here. I thought it was my charger, many bad battery modules, but then finally looked at my new cables. The wire gauge was way too small (20 or maybe less), and both the plug and clip ends were just pinched on, badly at that. I was able to salvage the clips and plugs, used good 16 gauge stranded wire, then soldered all ends. Low and behold my numbers looked like what they should be, much bigger discharging and charging numbers.

Hello, for hybrid or nimh batteries to work for many years, they require passive and permanent balancing due to their low cell tension, they will not be the same. This is solved by connecting a shunt zener diode with its current limiting resistor. It balances all the cells at the same voltage. It is not perfect and a small percentage of capacity is lost, but it is better than a dead battery after 3 years. This method is highly effective, reliable and easy to integrate, achieving triple the useful life of a battery.

All the milliamp numbers and readings you’re getting is the basically in the term to be explained the fuel capacity of each sell the ones that hold larger numbers called larger charge ones that hold lesser numbers probably should be replaced or matched with a different pack I like what you were doing here because this is something we did during RC racing we would take packs and match them with the cells that match the best and even if we had a low number cell as long as it was matched with sales just like it it would be a really good pack

Back when we used this Battery make up and material to race RC cars we would use tail light bulbs soldered together to fast drain our packs before recharging them before the next race.. This could speed up your process if discharging is taking up a lot of your time

Fun fact: if you read the Venom ProQuad charger manual, you will see that the default setting for NiMH sensitivity is 7mv, not 5. That being said, is it better if it is set to 5mv? Then you are potentially at a risk of under-charging due to early termination. Maybe set sensitivity to 5mv and charge at 4A instead of 5? Idk… I’m new to all of this.

What is the amperage capacity on 34 cell NIMH Camry - 1.6kWh … I set the capacity at 7200 & on EV Peak charger & it appears that the machine cutoff at 7200 flashing as if the cell had more amperage room available- than the 7200….I would want each cell to be at full capacity-it has more power for our Camry & battery - overall ….does anyone have the right figures?? THANKS…

I do this with Tunigy Reaktor Charger. (iIam from germany, i hope you can read my comment). Some modules from my 2006 Lexus GS450H also sweel up. Which one you declare as bad?
I found some bad (very big) swell modules and i stop to charge. But other modules swell up to the sides for 1-2mm (german metric). What is your key swell for the modules.
And the final question: I have modules with discharge results from 5400-3500 mA/h. What is your target to replace a modul?
    Greats from germany

Steve, very helpful. I purchased the same Venom charger. It took me quite a while to figure out the programing. I'm now using the exact same settings but having very little success moving beyond only a cycle and a half. DCHG-CHG-DCHG then aborting. With your experience do you have any ideas? Also, even at 5 amps I'm feeling almost no heat in the blades and zero evidence of swelling. I've only had one cycle that reached the 7250 mAh. Hmm. Watching again, I see my NiMH Charge on Manual not automatic. I'll try that.

    • @preludethomas1061
      @preludethomas1061 Год назад

Old comment. But for people in the future, this could be corrosion in wiring between the HV Ecu and the modules. If your copper bus bars were significantly corroded it is highly likely the corrosion traveled up from there. You can replace these wires as a whole unit. Also, cells too far out of balance could cause this I believe.

My charger keeps stopping at the 1st D>C, it doesn’t run through the second and third.
I have to keep restarting it to get a second and third discharge then charge.
Also, the top number reaches 7500mAH but the second number is always below 5000mAh but only goes up 100-200mAh at t a time. It’s taking forever to complete the first 4 cells.
    Is this normal?

If your discharge number is above 5,000mAh, then I consider it a good cell. You may have to run multiple cycles. After 3 cycles, if it doesn't reach 5,000mAh, replace.

Buying a whole pack with known mileage on it gave me a bit more confidence that the new modules would match the old ones in my pack. I couldn't tell you whether charge cycling really helps or not. I don't know that anyone really has a perfect way to do it- even the well known companies have modules fail frequently on their rebuilt packs. Swapping in a $20 ebay module is cheap, so it can't hurt much!
