    A few weeks ago I purchased a used 2007 Toyota Highlander Hybrid(202K miles). It had no problem making it the 3+ hours from
    South Carolina to my house in North Carolina. Both propulsion sources were stellar from my amateur viewpoint. I bought it as
    much for a learning project as for a keeper or a flip; perhaps
    even more. It is presenting some challenging issues & however painstaking these may be, it does open the door to
    enlightenment.
    A few words about me may be in order at this point. I have an Associates in Electrical/Electronics & considerable
    industrial exp. at the 480volt level. I have PLC training & Exp. & much exposure to both digital(discreet) & analog field devices
    & instrumentation. I have had much electrical & other safety training to include formal arcflash.
    I got this for a song because it had developed a Check VSC/ Check Hybrid system alarm that flashed on my multi-info screen all
    the way home. As I said above it ran great. But braking was extremely labored. It needed a very hard press on brake peddle to
    cause a stop. A wise old instructor of mine used to say that when you don't know what to do, do what you know how to do.
    The owner had informed my that the brake fluid, pads, rotors etc. were all good. When I got it home I inspected anyway &
    found that the inboard pads were extremely worn. I ordered new pads. I also hooked up my OBD 2 checker & there were absolutely
    no codes(Green check mark).
    So the car sat in my garage for 7-10 days while I did some research & ordered parts. The 4th holiday passed & on July5 I decided to drive up to my local AutoZone to get a more in-depth code check. So I got in the Hybrid, pressed the brake & turned the key & the READY light came on & as in other timed the combustion engine started automatically after several seconds. I pulled it out of the garage(detached) & drove the 50ft or so up to the house. I needed to go inside & get my wallet. While in the house looking for the wallet the gas combustion engine turned off but the ready light was still on. I pulled out of my driveway & onto the street on battery power only(1st time doing that). I feel quite sure that the combustion engine came on when I got on the road but the 2-3 mile trip never needed more speed than about 40MPH. When I got to AutoZone, the first lady came out with a reader & there were no codes. But then a man came out probably with a different scanner & it rendered some ABS codes as I has expected. They are C1252, C1256 & C1259. But all that was to become my secondary problem. Because when I pressed on the brake & turned the key the red battery lights did not go away & thus no READY light. CRAP!!! I did not know what to do & it was about 95F here in Carolina that day so I called AAA & had it towed to the house. His ETA was about 45min late. I was hot, bothered & embarrassed; rotten day! My Hunch- The traction battery has discharged just below the threshold where battery alarms are not toggling away
    to give a READY signal. My next step is to remove the back seat & figure out how to measure & charge the traction battery. Preos info is all over the place. What charger do I need for my 2wd Highlander?
    Given Wednesday morning over again, I would have never have pulled out of the driveway powered by the battery only(combustion engine off).
    Can Maintenance Mode help? If you have any tips to help me recover please text Keith @(252)904-0365. Thanks!

    Hello Jose,
    I'm ecstatic over your exceptional videos! I'm a Prius 2012 owner and have just encountered Hybrid battery issues. I'm an inventor of multi-disciplined interactive museum and science center exhibits. I will be pulling my main battery assembly next week. I have a fair electro-mechanical understanding and will fabricate a paralleling rack in my prototype workshop. I look forward to bringing you onboard as I expand my familiarity with e-vehicles. I have a 12 volt digital variable power supply but probably need to purchase a Maxx Volts EL-1 or the Prolong product that you are using.
    Thank you so much for being out there.

    Thank you for the idea of connecting the batteries in parallel. ❤ I used bare copper ground wire found in electrical wiring to connect the batteries in parallel using the nuts. I was surprised that I could charge the whole pack using a SKYRC B6 AC V2 NiMH Battery Charger. I could apply as much as 4.8 amps to charge or as little as 0.3 amps to apply a trickle charge. I could also attach one or two headlights to discharge in parallel. I only discharge down to about 6.4 volts as I have found discharging a module lower than 6 volts tends to hurt the module. BE VERY CAREFUL TO NOT TO CONNECT THE BATTERY POLES TOGETHER WITHOUT RESISTANCE (SUCH AS A LIGHT) BETWEEN. You can use your tester to test voltage, however I would not risk testing amperage, especially with the whole pack connected. I'm surprised I could charge the whole pack this way. I like to charge it up to 8.25 volts. BE CAREUL when charging in parallel. When a NiMH module is fully charged, a Delta V (voltage drop) will occur somewhere between 8.58 v and 9 v. If the batteries are connected in parallel and a Delta V occurs in a module, a fire 💥 may occur because all of the other modules may transfer their amps into the module with the Delta V.

      Hello, so if I am charging in parallel, how can I prevent a Delta V?
      Also, hooking cells in parallel will only balance their output voltages, it will not balance the state of charge which is what is desired to be balanced. It's a huge misconception that the battery voltage indicates how much charge a battery has left (this will only provide one a rough estimate). So would doing this parallel charging really do a recondition?

    • @GaryMarkowski
      @GaryMarkowski Год назад +4

      @@josuemolina4377 The Delta V is triggered in each module somewhere between 8.55 v and 9 v (approximately - so I've read). To prevent Delta v, charge the modules to no more than 8.4 v. Charging to 8.3 v may be safer. If you charge past 8.58 v you may notice it is difficult to charge much higher than that. Note that when charging at 8.58 v, the charging voltage may be something like 9.25 v or 9.5 v. When you stop charging the battery voltage will drift down to the 8.6 v range. If you charge the modules at around 8.6 v for 20 minutes or more, you may be damaging the modules. Specifically, you may be using up the oxygen or whatever they insert into the module to trigger the Delta v and the Delta v will no longer be triggered. I suspect I may have damaged some of my modules by doing this, so the Delta v is not triggered and the Prius battery manager CPU is not detecting Delta v and allowing the modules to be charged up to 9.5 v (or so it appears). I think I may need to buy a new HV pack because of this. So... don't charge higher than 8.4 v to be safe and maybe just 8.3 v. I have noticed many modules will drift down to about 8.11 v when resting after being charged up to 8.25 v, and some will drift down to about 7.88 v. When new, the modules will drift to about 7.20 v (so I have read). When the batteries are connected in parallel, to recondition the modules, you can discharge them down to lets say 6.20 v and charge them back up to 8.25 v. You can do this 3 or 4 times (I would suggest 2 or 3 times). It may do more harm than good to go lower than 6.20 v or higher than 8.40 v. Some people do this at high amps which will likely cause the batteries to heat up and expand. I discharge a module using 2 headlight bulbs (about 9 amps), and charge at about 5 amps (for each module). When charging the whole pack in parallel, I found 4 amps was good and I sometimes charged at around 5.2 amps. You can also discharge the whole pack in parallel at once using 2 headlight bulbs. Charging and discharging refreshes the modules (kind-of). However eventually the old modules don't work the same. The modules need to have a similar resistance, which varies in a module depending on the voltage of the module and will change in the same day in a module. Attributes such as resistance, how much a battery can hold a voltage when charged up to 8.20 v and allowed to rest. When charged to 8.10 v and connected to a headlight, how much the voltage drops in 2 minutes is a factor. When the battery is at 7.80 v and connected to a headlight for 2 minutes is another factor Some modules appear to last longer, however this can be misleading because if the resistance is high, then the module is not putting out the same amps at the same voltage. My latest strategy is to pair up modules using voltage drop and resistance as guides. Some modules may do well between 8.10 v and 7.20 v, but then drop off quickly below 7.20 v. There are 6 cells in each module and you cannot balance these. I think there is merit to balance the whole pack for at least 24 hours. But when put back in the car, they will likely unbalance in 2 seconds. I think the battery manager CPU balances the blocks though (2 modules are in each block). Another attribute is battery memory. When you discharge a module from 8.10 v down to 7.80 v and let it rest, it is likely the voltage will increase up to 7.88 v within seconds or a few minutes. If you discharge a module down to 6.40 v and let it rest overnight, it likely will drift up to 7.10 v or so. Note: by design the batteries when new will have a charge of about 7.20 v (the chemistry does this). When the voltage is above 7.40 v, I noticed the modules will drift up or down (usually back up). Some people think these are bad modules and replace them. This is too complicated and I ignore this behavior. I think allowing the modules to be connected in parallel for 24 to 48 hours is good, and you can use this time to charge them up to 8.25 v and discharge to 6.40 v for at least 2 cycles does them good.

      @@GaryMarkowski I have been trying this.. I connected them in parallel with soldering wire(as a safety precaution is a Delta v gets triggered, the solder will heat up and melt and disconnect).. But for some reason, the cells don't seem to want to balance, as they stay in different voltages.. It has been over a day since they were connected in parallel and I have been charging them too at 1amp..

    I have a 2022 Ford Escape Hybrid (not a PHEV). I notice when the car is remote started and allow to warm up for 5-10 minutes I get way better eMpg than if I drive from a cold starry. Obviously the remote start start / idle process charges the much smaller hybrid only battery. Are there any aftermarket solutions that would allow me to charge the smaller hybrid-only battery over night to have a fully charged battery in the morning? Running a hybrid only (especially in the colder months with short trips) keeps the hybrid battery and 12V system at a reduced charge. Ford turns off battery features (like lock / unlock from passenger door handle) when battery charge is below nominal. Being able to “top off” a hybrid vehicle over night would be nice. Only 120V would be needed. After market charge solutions to attach to non-PHEV?

    • @chuksjossie
      @chuksjossie 2 года назад

      I actually built your balancer and connected all modules in parallel. I was able to charge and balance all the modules at the same time using my RSC Ring charger but at 2A charging rate. Before servicing, my battery expectancy life was 32% however after cleaning the bus bars and fan, it went up to 44% and the battery has been performing better, however I still have one weak module according to Dr Prius app. My next plan of action would be to get an Sky RC charging because I can use it for 3 charging cycle in order to improve the capacities of the modules and eliminate the modules that reduce instead of increase capacity during these cycles. Notwithstanding we are glad for this video for the knowledge.

I have seen posts that recommend doing this instead of the typical 50 W lightbulb test. Apparently you apply this large load for only 30 seconds and observe how quickly the voltage drops. they claim it as a more realistic test because it is much like the kind of large load that is typically applied to these batteries.
