    Love the sharpener & especially Heinz's improvements. I find it interesting that those that complain about the cost of power tools probably spend thousands on electronics (TV's, smartphones, etc.) that become obsolete after a few years but the money you spend on power tools not only provides quality tools that last decades but keeps you doing creative, productive activities making beautiful & useful items that bring great personal satisfaction while most of the complainers are sitting on their butts getting type 2 diabetes.

    Awesome work on the knife sharpener, its always nice to see ppl taking so much pride in their work.
    add a strip of leather to one of those sharpening blocks with a bit of buffing compound and you can even polish the edge on the sharpener.

    I'm making a guided sharpener. One idea I was given was to use glass to spray-tac my sandpaper to. Wood is soft and 'can' become uneven, it may not, but the glass is flat and rigid. I had our neighborhood (old school) hardware store cut me a handful of 1" x 6" pieces of 1/8" glass. Plus, you can clean the adhesive off with some acetone or xylene then stick on a new one. In case it's not clear, I use a can of 3M spray adhesive on the glass then stick on the sandpaper.

    Great video and a fantastic job done.
    Allmost as good as mine... Well some parts is better then my homemade system.
    Anyway its not complete! U need a stopbar so the knifes dont slide down while u sharpen them. No matter how strong the magnets r the knife will move ( 11:37 ) . This will allso set the knife on the same distance when u turn it. Its an easy job. Get a wingnut and a peace of thin plastic. Make a slide hole in the plastic. Drill a hole in the wood and screw the plastic in place. Now u can adjust the knife depth aswell.
    It will make the job easier for u.

      Dangit, I just posted my comment before reading the other comments and found your post, I had just thought about that very issue! That fix resolves both of the questions that I had asked since the knife is being held in place, but not fixed or fastened. Great idea Ayata Halit!

      There is nothing special about them. And the finer stones are not supposed to be used like that. You need to make a slurry on the surface, using a nagura stone or something similar, it's this slurry that polishes the edge.

  • @TerryPullen
    @TerryPullen 7 лет назад +2

    This is a great design. I would add a jig for referencing the blade edge to the fixture and a backstop to steady the blade and I would use diamond plates instead of stones because they will stay flat. To each his own. With this design you can start simple using scrap wood and sandpaper and as you are able to spend more money you can add stones and diamond plates. Now that I think of it, this would be a complete fail on ceramic knives but not many folks have those.

    The only issue I see is that you still need to soak and occasionally flatten your stones.
    Which the rods and handles will probably be cumbersome and eventually need to be removed.
    A clamping mechanism for the Stones would probably work best.

    What is the "liquid rubber" product? Brand name & wherr obtaigned? Same questions for the magnets and two part epoxy?
    Admiring the skill and craftsmanship your friend has, very impressive. Very much liking how sturdy and strong the final product is, will probalby last a few lifetimes, not the typical cheap commercial "planned obsolescence" products. A suggestion for future improvement/upgrade, or separate rig - something that can sharpen serrated, recurved, and/or Tanto style blades.

    2 angles involved,wouldn’t the knife clamp being horizontal make it easier to select angle?

  • @maniacallyhappy
    @maniacallyhappy 7 лет назад

    I love the design and look of your guys sharpener! If it was on the market I would definitely purchase one. Couple of questions though, does the angle of the edge profile make that drastic of a difference or is symmetry more important to the sharpness of the blade?
    •If you're looking for symmetry, how can you fasten the blade to make sure that both sides of the edge are symmetrical? Maybe it may be a good idea to add a guide below the holding magnets to have the spine of the knife be aligned in the same position on either side of the knife when its placed on the magnets?
    •If its more important to have an accurate angle for the sharpness, how can you make sure that the angle is True with knifes of different width? I'm guessing you guys measured the angle from the apex of the fastening board, but the knifes with varying width will have their edges sitting at a higher point than the board apex because it is at an incline, so I'm guessing that since the guiding hole sits at a fixed point there will be a variance in the actual angle of the blade profile.
    Main reasons I'm asking is because I can see myself using this sharpener, but I can imagine myself being a goof and possibly accidentally finding different ways to use it improperly.
    Its looking phenomenal so far guys, I love your videos!

    • @frenchriversprings
      @frenchriversprings  7 лет назад

      If the angle is 20 degree or 25 degree it does not matter that much. If one side of the knife is 19 degree and other side is 24 degree it's also ok. What is important is to stay consistent with you angle when sharpening. I can sharpen a knife free hand pretty good and have it razor sharp but it took a lot of practice. I had to sharpen my friends knives to get more practice. For most people, a guided knife sharpener is the way to go.

    So, basically it comes with slots for the tools required to fix it WHEN it wears out. Instead of using a stone. Which would last a hell of a lot longer AND produce uniform weight on the blade. Also, why not adjust the last hole for 30* instead of 31*? Having a rounded remainder that accumulates just shows bad precision measuring. I have a general question. Who's the market for this product? I came across this video when I was looking for people using a laser to sharpen a knife.

    I am not sure if you still monitor your comments since this video is almost a year old but I will ask my questions and hope for the best.
    First Question: With your knife resting plane sitting at an angle, doesn't that throw off the contact angle of the sharpener or did you take that into consideration?
    Second Question: Did you consider some type of clamping system instead of magnets so that you could be sure the knife does not move during the sharpening process?
    Third Question: Did you consider putting some sort of safety ring on the rod that extends from the sharpening rod in order to avoid accidentally going to far in either direction?
    Lastly, I love the work and craftsmanship that went into both of your builds, I am a home woodworker and am really looking forward to getting this project on my work bench. Thank you for sharing this wonderful piece of work and I look forward to your reply.

    • @frenchriversprings
      @frenchriversprings  6 лет назад

      1. Did not take the knife angle into consideration but it is minimal.
      2. One of my first knife sharpener had a clamp. The magnet is faster especially when you switch blade sides all the time when going through your grits. Yes the knife can move a bit and that throws off your angle but it is very minimal.
      3. I would only put a safety ring if I would sell the system but I won't.
      Thanks for the compliment. :)

    • @NoWokeSpeak
      @NoWokeSpeak 6 лет назад

      Thank you for your reply, I am going to try and make one for myself, do you have a recommendation for the angle of the plate that holds the knife? I was thinking about just making it a flat plane so I could just rely on the angle markings for the sharpener. If it doesn't matter then I will just go with the aesthetics or the one you guys made because it has very nice lines and has a better overall look to it.
