I remember in 1963, when that Skeeter Davis record was released. I was a late night DJ and Ms. Davis called me on the request line after she had just performed in a concert. She wanted to tell me about her new "cross over" record that was coming out - "The End of the World." Remember too that she was DJ Ralph Emery's wife at that time and was considered totally "country." But I encouraged the head DJ at the time to make "End of the World" the "pick it of the week" on our Top 40 station in Fargo, North Dakota. He laughed and said I wanted to do that because she called me. No, I told him, this is a really good song! Turned out I was right. It was the song of the year in 1963 and is still being played and performed in 2020!
Excellent story! The fact that this song was released the same year as the Kennedy assassination adds extra poignancy. It's a total tear-jerker on multiple levels. Allison's version is easily as good as the Skeeter Davis version. Beautiful, gripping tune.
Thanks, Harold! I agree with you that Allison's is as good, if not a little stronger - in a different style - than Skeeter's. Ms. Davis was trying to "cross over" to the Top 40 charts and this release did, in fact, bring her over. Despite my fellow DJ's laughing at me for suggesting it be our "pick hit of the week," it went to #2 on the 1963 pop charts. Quite an accomplishment. Allison is a real talent and does pop tunes and the Great American Songbook so doggone well. I'd pick her as a future pop star if she isn't one already on RUclips.
@@haroldclark1787 Especially poignant because the Kennedy assassination was the end of a world or at least an era in American life. What we call the Sixties really began then.
I'm old and live alone and am just about totally quarantined but discovering you is a difference maker. I love this song and all your videos . I especially love your selections from Charlie Chaplin, Patsy Cline, Buddy Holly, Smokey Robinson and all the rest.. I've loved music since I was 7 and Buddy Holly was the first 45 I bought when I was 7 it was "Everyday". Ive got to believe you are "Magic". I discovered your music just when I needed something to cheer me up. Please keep posting these incredible videos and your also a very fine musician and whistler!!!!!
This song was written long before you were born lovely woman, but it was created to be sung by YOU!!!! I absolutely love the way you sang this. The guitar and voice overs are also well placed and well done as well. I love this song, you, and your lovliness. Crazy is still my favorite as you killed that also but this song by Skeeter is precious and I LOVE you for doing this. You are a GIFT Allison. A true gift to the human ear and eye. God Bless and best of good fortune to you my dear woman. XXXXXXXXOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Ray C. Florida P.S I also love the ways you dress and your appearance. JUST WONDERFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's nice to see someone bring attention to an old song I never listened to growing up. I can really appreciate the lyrics and music now that I'm older. Especoally when sung by someone with such a beautiful voice. Well done. :)
Being a person who struggles with strong anxiety issues, Alison's singing never fails to calm me down and reminds me that life isnt that bad. Thank you so much, your music is incredibly beautiful. ^_^
I'm so glad that I can give you some peace. I am also a person who struggles with anxiety, and sometimes it gets to the point to where I can't go about daily tasks, as they become almost impossible. Music is one of the only things that makes me feel grounded and calm; it's been that way since I was little. There truly is healing in music.
@@allisonyoungmusic I totally agree with that. I really feel this deep connection to music, like I need it no matter what. Cant realty put it in words, it's like my soul yearns for it. I've put is as one if my goals to learn how to sing one day, took some singing lessons in the past and I loved it :) Hope you deal with your demons Allison! You are the best! ^_^
Yes. Songs are one of the best cures on those ugly issues. You all here are not alone. Also vintage loving gentleman as me can have such anxiety issues. And Alison is just amazing. I wish I met a girl like her and spent the rest of life with her. Such beautiful, talented, sensitive and loving soul with passion for vintage clothes. And I love her hair as well :-D.
Absolutely gorgeous. The song, the voice and the singer. I cannot for the life of me figure out how you're not a huge star by now, or how some of the singers who are got there.
🥰🥰🥰My granddaughter will fall asleep with me humming this song. Thank you Allison!! You have a mature soul. Love your choice of songs. Don’t stop singing for us. You are a blessing during these crazy times❤️ +
I remember this growing up. We'd just had the Cuban Missile Crisis and then JFK was assassinated a year later. It was played a lot during Vietnam. I know it's in sentimental fun, but you can't forget lost loved ones or lost love. Especially when they need us to go on, same as we'd want if it were us. Like in the great movie Titanic with Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio. This is a great song you've made greater Allison, helping us all thru, together.
I like to imagine that somebody is lucky enough to hear that velvety voice humming throughout your home; that they smile at their fortune while washing the dishes, listening to you practice songs in the other room.
I was sold when you got to “Why...” . Some singers perform the song, while others (yes you Ms Young) become the voice behind the lyrics - they understand how the song speaks to us:)
Allison. Don't change. Stay just the way you are. You have tremendous talent, tremendous presence, but don't get rich and famous. Don't get any older. You are absolutely perfect the way you are. Keep on keeping on. Just continue being who you are. You have a wonderful life right now. Enjoy it. God bless you.
I really appreciate singers who can sing with such quality in the lowest part of their register. Few can do it and this is one of the best examples I have heard.
I have loved "The End of the World" since I heard it at the first time. Your cover version is so beautiful. Every time I listen to this song, I can't help crying. Thank you for singing!
Allison's cover is better than the original, which I remember well. The original was a nice song, which I liked, but it seemed a bit trite. With the richness of her performance, Allison just gives it a depth that Skeeter did not have, imo. Not that Skeeter did not bring the passion. Allison brought the passion and, also, a reality and immediacy might be the way to say it.
Allison, your rendition of this song is haunting and brought back the images of my youth. Growing up during the Cold War after the Cuban Missile Crises and waiting to be drafted to go fight in Vietnam at age 18, us teenage boys fell in love quickly and lived a fast life. Having a girlfriend gave us hope of marriage before being drafted, unfortunately once drafted we often got a Dear John letter, inform that our girlfriend or young wife had moved on.
Seriously doubt you read comments on old videos, but its important to me to tell you that I was having a seriously rough day yesterday. I was at work trying to focus on my job and stay calm, knowing that a bunch of shit was going wrong in my homelife. I was really anxious, and I'd already had an anxiety attack that morning- I really didn't want to have one at work. Your music helped me to ground myself again and calm calm. I'm truly very grateful for your art, and grateful that you share it. Thank you.
Glad to see you did this cover for "The End of the World" There have been some good renditions I came across. Yours is the best and a wonderful cover for this beautiful song. Peace to all.
I'll never forget listening to this song when it was a big hit with my friend Leigh Gibson. We were both sitting in a garage with the door open, not saying a word. I knew at that moment that I loved her more than anything in this world. We were 11 or 12 and I never told her how I felt.
I remember when Skeeter had this out and a few others have to. This is the most beautiful version that I have heard. Such a good singer with a beautiful voice.
As good as it gets. Thank you.. I just listened to this three consecutive times. Skeeter sang this when I was 9. I remember it. Every time I hear it, her version or yours, I'm stuck thinking that I'd so much like to be the one that picks her up on the end of of her hurt and makes it all better. Alas, that can't happen because reality sets in and life has shown me how totally inadequate I am. I'm just not right for the part. I guess it's going to be someone else to do it.
Been through three wars, under two flags. Here to tell ya sweetheart, it aint the end, not by a long shot. Thanks for the grace, elegance and harmony. Those things will and always have, saved the world.
Allison, thank you for yet another beautiful song, sung as only you can. I remember listening to Skeeter Davis on AM radio when I was 13 years old. Thanks again.
Allison... bravo. Great rendition of this song from my younger days. I'm so glad you show an appreciation of music past. I was 11 years old when that song was released. Cheers.

I put up my own post above but "gorgeous" is the word. Such depth and richness and musicality...just blew me away.
It's happening, but at just the right pace - watch how Allison's views are increasing at a steadily rising rate!
How did people get there? Sex and Disney Channel and boring bland music that sounds like everything else on the radio. Also connections.
@Fred Kardin I think her performance style is what makes her unique and is never anything short of captivating. Please don't change, Allison!!
