Traveling Iceland by tent, photographing Iceland with film camera. One of the best photo trips in my life 17 years ago! Looking forward to next of your vids (and Adam's vids)! Just it was done with own 4WD car (ferry line from Europe)
My 26L Mindshift Backlight bag was technically too big for hand luggage on United Airlines last year!! I have the 50L Action X bag and wouldn't have even thought of trying to take it as a cabin bag....until now lol! Oh I agree about the Shimoda pouch. i have one for various bits and pieces and love it.
Top tip for travelling with film: Chuck one or two rolls of Ilford Delta 3200 into your bag... Some airports will only check your film by hand if your film is ISO 800 or above.
This is indeed a good call, but I will say that I've had some grumpy security personnel at London Heathrow ruin some rolls of Delta (among other film) because they weren't willing to hand check *anything*. But most of the time, this does the trick!
@@gabrielstroup Because their fancy X-ray scanner is now approved to scan film upto ISO 800. If you don't believe that, then do as the OP recommends. Toss a really ISO roll of film in the pack so that they are forced to hand check the film.
In recent history, two of my most uncomfortable nights "sleep" were due to air mattresses on a cold ground. Gah! A comment on your emergency beacon. A buddy that rides like the devil, dirt and dual sport bikes; mainly in the wilds of Nevada carries a sat phone, cell phone and the In Reach. He used to carry the Spot (much like yours) but it had two glaring faults. One: it was one way so he had no way to know if the beacon was received. Two; No way to tell the receiver what level of emergency you were in. Maybe he was in a real mess with critical injuries, or maybe he was in a mechanical fix and needed a tow truck. So aid may come, but perhaps not the correct aid. He carries three methods of contact because they each have their faults so with coverage over lap he's pretty sure a call will actually go out. All three are two way. Something to consider.
Ronald, the next PLB from Orolia has a ReturnLink powered by the EU's Galileo satellites. It will flash to let you know your distress beacon has been seen. Additionally its MUCH more accurate than the current system and also MUCH faster. I'll be sure to do my best get one in Thomas' hands when they come off the production line to so to speak. As a long time subscriber to Thomas' channel and very much admirer of his work, you cant imagine how pleased I was to get this to him =D
Hi Ronald, good points. PLB's aren't based on the same technology as Spot or In-reach as it uses the free to use, dedicated 406MHz frequency which is monitored by global search and rescue a call centre. Your right to highlight the level of emergency, PLB's like the FastFind are only to be used when a person is in distress and needs external help. It combines the alert signal with GPS & Galileo receivers to pinpoint your location, has a guaranteed 24h activation time and has global coverage, so help is a button away. It is a one way device, a new version call the FastFind ReturnLink will be available in November which includes a return signal confirming receipt of your call and that your location is known.
Hi Thomas, firstly total envy that you are in Iceland. It really is an amazing place, as you already know, having done several trips there. The people are fantastic, the scenery knocks you out, the weather is on constant change. So, yes, I am totally envious of you right now. And I am looking forward to lots of great videos from this particular tour. Secondly you mentioned the X-T4 and the video issues. You might like to take a look at Pal2tech’s latest RUclips Vlog which came out yesterday. Fujifilm Video Tips ruclips.net/video/P5BX0FZQfhY/видео.html which even though it says beginners, we can always pick up some useful tip or trick from anything we watch. Tip 5 at 8min 12 sec might be handy. OK, well enjoy your time in Iceland. Looking forwards to seeing all your Saga. Richard.
Greetings Thomas from Mexico. It is good to mention the things that work well and are suitable for photographic trips especially because of your experience, I found your comments honest and the needs involved in taking pictures in rain, heat, cold, wind and snow that you have experienced. I am very pleased that you are using your hasselblad again and hope that your shots will turn out well in your learning phase in negative film color and positive film. Excellent presentation was not boring as other commercials all this based on the experiences lived. Take care. All the Best.
Thomas, thanks for the mention of the FastFind PLB. The new Galileo version you have was released last year and is around £200. Unlike other tracker devices a #PLB uses the dedicated, free to use, 406MHz frequency monitored by search and rescue coordinators. There are no subscription fees, no call centres and unlike phones a PLB offers 24h activation power, 6 years shelf live and global satellite coverage. Only to be used in emergencies that require outside assistance, 406MHz devices like the #FastFind have saved over 43,000 lives. Enjoy your remote camping.
Standered focal length is the diagonal of the film /sensor so for a square format the sqaure root of (60*60) + (60*60) = sqaure root of 7200 = 84.85mm or 85mm
Of course it makes the wind loud - that’s it doing it’s job correctly. If you tell it to auto gain then when it’s quite and wind is the only noise it will boost the levels.
Mervin Rowland. Hi Tom, I also have a Hasselblad with WLF but to gain height I use a L bracket to turn it on it's side, although the image will be upside down ,like a large format you will at least have close focus,All the best Merv.
That’s great news regarding Iceland being open! A lot of our travel plans this year got cancelled (we were actually stuck abroad for a while due to lockdown) but now that we’re back home in Canada, the wife and I can’t wait to travel again! For now we’ve rented a camper-van for a trip to the west coast in a week, looks like Iceland is next on the list! 😃 Love your channel, thank you for your art and the inspiration! 🙏🏼
If you want a magnifier for your new prism finder, you maybe able to source a Hasselblad V view magnifier for PME51 prism finder. It attaches to the diopter on the prism and allows me to focus on eye lashes for head shoulder portraits. I have been using one for portraits for over 20 years. Couldn’t focus without one these days. Try eBay or KEH. Cheers.
I've heard that if you have one of those reflective space blankets, put that under your pad and it helps reduce heat loss at little to no weight or space taken. However, if you want to reuse it, the cheap ones are difficult to refold and might tear, get a Sol brand which are designed for reuse.
The ground beneath you is a cold sink and will ’suck’ the heat out of a body/mass in contact with it. (You’d be warmer with actual air between you and the ground). The thin pad wouldn’t stop the thermal transfer to the earth. Like night to day switching to something similar to the Thermarest Xtherm.
For a cold weather inflatable sleep pad take a look at Klymit or similar. You will compress your sleeping bag underneath you when you lay on a flat or slightly ribbed pad like yours. You lose your insulation that way because you can't trap any warm air in the down of your bag underneath you. Klymit pads allow for gaps in their design and let your sleeping bag fill them, trapping warm air and thus insulating you better .How on earth though you can fit all that in a 70Ltr I'll never know, I can fill a 120Ltr Bergen and still need a carry on for my trips.
Its always amusing to see young photographers going "back" to film, having come from film to digital myself 6 years ago. I must say though, it would be money better spent to shoot 4x5 field camera than medium format. Coming into digital from film was a learning curve, but much of what I did printing in the darkroom transfers well to Lightroom and Photoshop. It seems most who try to go the reversed path, seem to have difficulty getting film right. Exposure is the biggest stumbling block it seems.
Interesting video. Lots of gear. What I would tell everyone watching this video is that Thomas is "Car Camping". He's not "Hiking and Camping". You can't bring all that gear if you are hiking 10, 12 KM each day over rough terrain before you camp for the night. I went on a 75 KM hike last year and my companions failed to understand the difference. They were wonderfully set up for camping but had WAY to much gear. 55 Pounds each before counting the camera gear. Just something I feel I must mention.
Sweet. Sitting on my balcony, sipping a coffee and being excited for my upcoming vacation. Reading through your book to get inspiration and then a Notification for an upload of you hits me. Nice.
It's nice that Thomas and Alister Benn finally joined Adam's workshop. I feel those lads are learnings so much from such a legend as Adam. Maybe he is giving tips how to win any international award 🙌😅🥇
Here's a little tip, grab an emergency blanket, you know the silver ones, they pack down to super thin, lay that under your mat and it helps reflect the cold back down. I thought it was a gimmick but works pretty well.
Nice. I've started to take a foam mat and air mattress, foam helps keep the air matress warm and acts as a backup if you get a puncture too big to repair ^^ always a pleasure touring with Thor!
As a old pro. That’s a couple of days worth of film on a commercial shoot when clients want col, B/W, and trany my apprentice days started with Processing for our four photographers shooting maybe 80 rolls and 20 to 30 sheets. All by hand and printing upto 8ft b/ w printsprints
That Hasselblad takes me back to my student days in the '70s. I couldn't afford one then, and I still can't. I heard some audio clipping on the XT-4 even on manual. The AF problem is a well documented flaw, which is sad because it's almost perfect otherwise.
Great choice Thomas, I got the Air 2 about a month ago, is my first drone and I just returned from a camping trip to Utah and I absolutely love the images I captured with it.
Sound like this will be just the type of trip to recharge the batteries, hang out with mates, enjoy the the freedom to do what you love doing and if you come back with some keepers then thats the bonus too
Love the update to the kit. Great choice opting for the X-T4, makes a ton of sense. Look forward to seeing how your film photography develops on this trip, pun intended! Just a quick note, if you edit the time stamps in the description to include one starting at 0:00, intro perhaps, it will bring up the chapters feature in the video. Have a great trip!
G'day Tom, thanks for sharing all of the gear you are currently using, I have been using RUclips Chapters for my timestamps, simply put "Intro - 00:00" above your current timestamps and RUclips will add chapters automatically. Cheers, Duade
if you are looking for a good insulted pad then consider the Nemo Tensor Insulated, you can get it in all kinds of sizes, i got it in a regular length (183cm) but wide so i have more room and it only weighs 580g and even less for the regular height/width model, and its comfortable as hell, no crinkle since the insulation is suspended internally, and comes with a pumpsack so it doesnt develope mold and is easier to blow up.
Made the mistake once to camp with a sleeping mat without any insulation. My wife and I fled into a hotel after 2 nights :D. Took her camping again two years ago, destination: Skye. So we got ourselves some very well insulated sleeping pads. They were quite expensive, I went for the minimalist size, my wife got the huge comfy size :D. No regrets of that purchase, we slept really well, nice and warm. Also got myself a Garmin Inreach. Yes there is a subscription, but you can put it on hold when not needed.
I've been building my camping pack up for a while too. I went with Dyneema tent and pack. And I found insulated dyneema bags that can carry lenses on Ebay and provide protection. It's like bubblewrap inside. They use them for coolers. Anyway, Dyneema tent is around 1.2lbs or so. And the Dyneema backpack is around 3.5lbs lighter then the Shimodo. It is expensive, but not compared the the price of that Shimodo. Gear to heat up for food stuff is all titanium. Water bottles are all cheap plastic ones as they're super light. For hiking a sawyer water filter screws on the top of the water bottles so you just fill and go. No pumping. The quilt is the way to go like you have. And the great pad. The reason I spent so much on ultralight gear is so I could bring camera gear. Without an insane pack weight. My pack with camera gear weighs what my old pack with old technology gear and no cameras weighed. I hate lugging heavy packs and it just makes it so much easier on you when you get old. Like I am now at 52. lol Enjoy, Iceland is absolutely amazing.
I'm glad you are taking precautions and being safe on your travels. You never know. I think every third video you put out you catch yourself on camera almost dying. haha
My sister got me one of those fast find locator beacons for Christmas a couple years back. have not had to use it and hope I never need to! It's supposed to be registered to your country I believe... I should get around to that.
I cut my teeth on medium format. I do the conversions the other way... 80mm is normal - I convert in my head to 50mm for 35mm full format. In the 1980’s I shot over 1000 portraits on a 500c/m and 500 el/m. So happy to see you using classic equipment.
Funny. I just bought a Garmin Inreach. PLBs are fine but you cannot interact with rescuer giving information like how you are, what your problem is, which is your state and so on. Plus, battery is not rechargeable so every now and then you have to send it in to get a new battery. But, I surely agree these devices, also the ones subscription-based, for whoever find himself wandering around alone, are a priceless peace of mind. And happy you finally switched to Fuji, I feel it :-)
Why not try (on next trip) one of those aluminum mylar sheets to provide a barrier between your sleeping bag and the air mattress? Many years ago in winter car camping I used the skirt portion of a woman's long fur coat, purchased at a rummage sale, to provide perfect insulation from an air mattress in sub zero weather.
It won’t be long before you change your 35mm photography camera for a film camera. Rangefinders are great for travel. I was surprised by the xt4. I though you would have moved to the canon m6 mark ii. I’m looking forward to seeing your film images.
Trading proper focus for a little dynamic range? I wonder what viewers would notice more? But like you said, you can always focus manually. Sort of like the old days of shooting film, so it kind of fits the subject matter.
Looking forward to see the shots you get with the film camera. I've just about finished my film series and although it was a massive learning curve it was good fun. Good luck and enjoy!!
Just a quick comment: it’s never easy but to shoot down you can invert the camera (use the camera upside down) or to shoot at eye level, you can use the camera on its side (winder facing down), for example. That’s the beauty of square format, there’s not one way only to hold the camera. I usually try stuff like that with my TLR and it works after fiddling with it a bit. Have fun. ;)
You put the segments in the video by putting timestamps in the description. The rules to make it work are: - The first line has to start at 00:00 - Put the timestamps first? e.g. 00:00 - Intro 02:08 - Tripod 02:42 - Camera bag 03:40 - Hasselblad 501cm
Great reviews Thomas! I am definitely going to get that tent. Have a great time, and tell the guys I said hello. (Not like they know who the hell I am) 😂😂
This video makes me sad, I was supposed to be in Iceland right now for 10 days doing the ring road. But sadly being an American we aren’t allowed to go out and play right now, hopefully that will change soon. I can’t wait to see your upcoming videos, I hope you have a great trip
All three shooting film? (I just watched Adam Gibb's latest)... It sounds like a real retro themed outing. Would love to grab my Yashica Electro 35 and stand next to you folks for a couple of hrs. Enjoy the trip and the (I'm assuming) great company. Looking forward to the photos/video from you and Adam regarding this trip.
I'm considering buying that drone, but can't decide whether to buy the Air 2 or the Mavic 2 Pro, or whether I should wait for the Mavic 3! Lovely video as always ... enjoy!
Eh, not too interested in that old-timey cam/film stuff that cost a bundle and made you get all those options to see "through" the camera and sloooow down your photography but (here's the good news) still watching the whole video because you're just so darned entertaining. 👍😁 And I know, regardless of your disclaimer about this being solely a see-what-all-I-brought video, that you will slip up and show a few images. And you did, yea! Cool upside down rainbow shot! Thanks and have a fun, safe trip!
I just want to say thank you so much for all of your videos they calm me down so much it's now became my favorite thing to do ever is to wake up in the morning and drink my tea and eat my breakfast while I am watching your videos old and new I don't care all of them makes my day 100000000000000 times better so I truly want to say thank you so much please keep up your beautiful work and I wish you a beautiful days forever
Picked up the F4 Road trip full version, a birthday present to myself. Just started watching, very well done and worth the money.
Another really useful video Tom. Wasn’t expecting the shout out so that was a nice surprise thank you. I thought the same about the pad....if only it was insulated. Need to pick up a gps communicator myself. I was looking at the garmin inreach. Enjoy your trip mate.

Like I am now at 52. lol
Enjoy, Iceland is absolutely amazing.
Thomas, I am a Fujifilm fan myself, but I’m convinced their company mantra is “We do everything good, but nothing great”.
Just the Films they made were the best on the market.
I should get around to that.
exact same one as you've got too
I would have suggested the 45° prism, it's much bigger and brighter than the 90° Prism viewfinder.
I cut my teeth on medium format. I do the conversions the other way... 80mm is normal - I convert in my head to 50mm for 35mm full format. In the 1980’s I shot over 1000 portraits on a 500c/m and 500 el/m. So happy to see you using classic equipment.
WOW! That's a lot of gear :)
It would be nice if you could make a video on post processing rainbows, thanks.
Good luck with the film camera.
And happy you finally switched to Fuji, I feel it :-)
Congrats on getting out and about mate looking forward to upcoming vids from the area.
So nice to see you going all in in film
Why not try (on next trip) one of those aluminum mylar sheets to provide a barrier between your sleeping bag and the air mattress? Many years ago in winter car camping I used the skirt portion of a woman's long fur coat, purchased at a rummage sale, to provide perfect insulation from an air mattress in sub zero weather.
It won’t be long before you change your 35mm photography camera for a film camera. Rangefinders are great for travel. I was surprised by the xt4. I though you would have moved to the canon m6 mark ii. I’m looking forward to seeing your film images.
Iceland! Cool! I really want to go there someday myself. Looking forward to your upcoming videos!
Domhnall Gleeson of photography returns!
Another Heaton video, nice!
What is the brand name of that solar panel power grid you had?
Great kit. Curious if a mylar space blanket would isolate and reflect body heat on top of pad. Stay warm.
Have fun. ;)
I hope despite your frustrations with the X-T4 that you enjoy it, it really looks like the camera I want to get.
FYI you can create segments directly in the video to avoid having to put timestamps in the description ;)
☝️
You put the segments in the video by putting timestamps in the description. The rules to make it work are:
- The first line has to start at 00:00
- Put the timestamps first?
e.g.
00:00 - Intro
02:08 - Tripod
02:42 - Camera bag
03:40 - Hasselblad 501cm
6:54 you could be the first man ever that did a "timelapse" with all those films ;) I know i would !!!
Congrats on the XT4, on my wish list for sure, love my XT30 and that would be a nice upgrade. Enjoy the trip and thanks for sharing.
Thomas, you gotta try Nemo Tensor Insulated. Very light, very warm, yet super super comfortable
Guess Gavin could not get the permit approved by Amanda. . Ha ha.
Great reviews Thomas! I am definitely going to get that tent. Have a great time, and tell the
guys I said hello. (Not like they know who the hell I am) 😂😂
Sleep with a mylar sheet between you and the mattress / ground and you'll fare better. Thanks Tom looking forward to the followup episodes.
I have that same pillow - love the versatility in it. Sometimes I inflate and sometimes I just use the memory foam without any air
Daniel may i ask what the name of that pillow? TIA
Tony Dinh it is the Nemo Fillo I believe
Daniel thanks mate 🍻
Great review........the only thing missing ........ the weight of all of that kit!!! Not a fast light setup......
Have you tried putting a foil blanket or any other insulation under your sleep pad.
Looking forward to your updates - if you get time.
Remember to keep hold of the van door this time !!! Have a great adventure
What happened last time?
Melani Wright the wind caught the door and it snapped the hinges
Note you can actually run both of your Fuji's off the USB power bank, so you don't drain your batteries when in a static setup.
This video makes me sad, I was supposed to be in Iceland right now for 10 days doing the ring road. But sadly being an American we aren’t allowed to go out and play right now, hopefully that will change soon. I can’t wait to see your upcoming videos, I hope you have a great trip
Yes, PLBs are great and you really hope you don't need it.
HA I also just got the McMurdo 220. Solid choice.
Excellent as always
as always you do a great job. LOVE to see when you bring the Hasselblad out I wish I had mine back
All three shooting film? (I just watched Adam Gibb's latest)... It sounds like a real retro themed outing. Would love to grab my Yashica Electro 35 and stand next to you folks for a couple of hrs. Enjoy the trip and the (I'm assuming) great company. Looking forward to the photos/video from you and Adam regarding this trip.
Funny I was basically looking for this video yesterday and now you've released it today!
I'm considering buying that drone, but can't decide whether to buy the Air 2 or the Mavic 2 Pro, or whether I should wait for the Mavic 3! Lovely video as always ... enjoy!
Waiting for a new Heaton video is like waiting for a new movie
Eh, not too interested in that old-timey cam/film stuff that cost a bundle and made you get all those options to see "through" the camera and sloooow down your photography but (here's the good news) still watching the whole video because you're just so darned entertaining. 👍😁 And I know, regardless of your disclaimer about this being solely a see-what-all-I-brought video, that you will slip up and show a few images. And you did, yea! Cool upside down rainbow shot! Thanks and have a fun, safe trip!
1st: Iceland, brilliant choice!
next steps:
#2: clicking the like
#3: watching the rest of the video
Adam with you, even better!
