Sleeping in my Car for Landscape Photography

- Landscape photography requires a certain amount of commitment whether it is a long hike or an early start. In this video I aim to photograph sunset and sunrise in the lake district national park, however I have nowhere to stay for the night. Wild camping is out of the question, campsites were full and hotels are too expensive. My last option was to sleep in my car and it paid off as I woke up to beautiful mist and fog which made for some great landscape photography.

With this video, I would recommend watching until the end. It's a great example of how quickly things can change. Enjoy👍
P.s. My 2021 calendar is now available: thomasheaton.co.uk/product/2021-calendar/
Thomas When you are up in the Scottish highlands next, i would love to join you so you can teach an old dog how to do decent images.. ;)
Cake - stop eating cake. Sugar is bad for you.
Thomas Heaton Excellent video as always. So very glad the mist came through for you. Torn between the colour and black and white, but I do love the lone sheep in the dark area of the B&W shot. Ordered both your book and calendar and they just arrived two days ago. Love them both. JoAnne
Definitely the colour version Thomas, I like how you can see the blue water in the foreground and to the left rear of the image, it's a nice contrast of colours.
Hi Thomas, if you are looking for more separation in BW photo use color filters. It is of course possible simulate in post process but not everytime because color filter alter how much light of given color is touching sensor. I thought that color filters are obsolete in digital era but they are not.
Tom, there's a gentleness to your videos. There's an integrity, a respect and a simplicity. I would rate you as a bloody decent film maker at this stage. Also the music that you choose and how you use it. These videos are beautiful and an art form all by themselves.
All well said ♥️
agreed - enjoy them enormously here in Australia - longing to get back to UK
I love when you explain what is and isn't working in a composition. I sometimes find that Thomas Heaton voice in my head when out in the field.
I used to sleep in my car on travel assignments so I didn't have to pay for hotels. haha This was my life.
Its not a bad thing! car or cheap motels ftw!
Sounds like a good idea.
The one attentive little sheep absolutely makes the black and white image work. Really highlights the dark band of grass and provides a great counterpoint to the raised group of trees.
Soft colour image for me personally, just gives it a bit more atmosphere and it's what the eye would see - great video.
Both are great images but I think I prefer the soft colour shot. It really conveys the morning light in a way that the monochrome one doesn’t so much. Fantastic video as always! I learn so much from you, thanks.
Black and White is my favorite. I love the higher contrast and the quiet that it lends the photo.
I like the B&W image because the single sheep lower in the frame draws the viewer in to the composition, and then the eye just follows into the trees and the mist and the hill behind.
B&W really brings out the main copse and the sheep is the icing on the cake.
Thomas should borrow Morten Hilmer´s camouflage dress to hide from other photographers
and a wooden coffee cup.......he’ll need one of those too 😬
@@andyprime56 ahh mortens wooden kuksa coffee cup
The black and white one is looking good to me. It is just the right amount of calm and contrast.
I think it is awesome the way you recognized the potential of that little mound with trees given the right conditions and doggedly pursued it until you were there at the right moment. Bravo!
The colour one, most definitely. It adds smoothness and a touch of serenity, wonder and mysticism. Reminds me more of a painint too. The B/W one is just harsh and hits me in the face.
You could have stayed at my place. It’s a 5 min drive to there. Was there myself the other morning in the same conditions. Good work. I also shot the spider webs. Fantastic.
You should drive there and bring along some beer. That will be more fun.
@@esphilee lol!
I dig the black and white version for two reasons. The fog separating the tree and background and the lone sheep in the shadows making for a second nice subject separation. Nice work
B&W does it for me, the white sheep welcomes you into the scene like a master of ceremonies. Lifetime ski bum here, sleeping in a car, no problem. Great vid!
Have to say the colour version is doing it for me. Softer and more natural - Great video Tom 👍🏻
The higher contrast B&W version wins, I'd be curious if the trees in the background change a different color in the fall (autumn?) and provide that separation too.
The white cow in the dark grass in the foreground puts the higher contrast photo on top in my opinion. It's one tiny detail that seems to make the foreground feel "whole", though if you were lucky enough to have it standing more towards the left it'd possibly be more balanced. Regardless, wow.. I love that photo. The enormous roots hugging the rocks give the tree on the right so much character.
Black and White. I prefer it because the subject is so timeless and pastoral that I feel the b/w speaks to that.
Really like the black and white. The tree gives the image depth when it’s in B&W
Black and white for me. Love the contrast between the copse of trees and the mist!
I love B&W photography, but the softer colored version is the winner for me. It brought me to the place a lot more. Fantastic capture!
The B&W one. The other one looks a bit empty without the sheep now. It's more dynamic and keeps the eye moving from the sheep to the trees to the background and back.
6:17 that horizontally blown tree thing is a square composition if ever I saw one! That jumped at me from the background, there was no way I was casually walking past that.
Winter 👍
@@ThomasHeatonPhoto yeah will look great in winter
I can't pick between the two, I love them both. In this case the deciding factor would be decor and where the picture will be displayed. Can't go wrong with either. ❤️
You truly capture the essence of landscape photography in your videos.
The old Thomas is definitely back and appears to be enjoying his photography .............. Great video BTW and as for the image, I prefer the colour shot ............... For me, it has a more autumnal feel to it 📷👍
YES!! EXCITING ISN'T IT!!
I love the color version! It’s so soft and atmospheric. I feel like it puts me there. Another job well done mate!
B&W all day long - contrast, mystery, sheep. Actually, it's all about the sheep. She makes that shot!
Both are great, and I like the colour one more. For me, the coloured light is more relatable and I can easily picture myself walking through the scene.
Tom: it's not working, it needs separation
Mother nature : there you go Tom
😁
Lol. That's exactly what happened.
As much as I love black and white images, the colour one is for me. Looked like a painting.
The single sheep makes the B/W version. Adds further depth and leads to the wall. Terrific shot.
Great video again. Wow, it was tough to choose between the two. Both of them had a story to tell but I was later inclined towards the soft color version as I felt it had a more profound story to tell. The choice of going with a soft color gave it a deeper meaning. Simple but strong. Thank Thomas.
The color version is missing the sheep in the foreground :D
Usually I'm not a B&W person, but I think here the high contrast BW fits better with no mist in front of the tree.
I wish the people 'sleeping' in cars round where I live were landscape photographers filming brilliant videos 😬
More will appear with the looming unemployment and Brexit. Sad.
@@an1_uk I was on about doggers not homeless people though you are correct and something really needs to be done about it.
lol!

I think the sheep in the foreground of the black and white image really completes the composition. Great video and images, thanks for sharing.
Softer colour for me. I think colour helps bring the scene alive and separates it even more oddly enough. Love the colour one.
The black and white image for me. However would love to see the scene with full autumn colours as well! Great content as always....keep up the good work!
Hi Tom! I really like the spider web photo! Regarding the last image the monochrome does it for me, the coloured one would be nice later on the fall when the leaves change, just to add that little extra to the scene.
First of all, this was a classic Thomas Heaton video. Out and about in the UK, a little drone footage, love that, and a little vintage music, what can I say - Three cheers! That said I prefer the B&W.
Both versions are lovely but I think I prefer the colour one , it just speaks of a beautiful Autumn in the lakes ,
Which of course it is !
Posted 23 seconds ago.. Well... first we like, then we watch it... :D
Honestly mate, have you ever felt the urge to press "dislike" on a T.Fuego production? I think not 😅 You´re better off just slamming that like button asap.
I agree..like first
Camping in the car: Hey Tom! Great to see your getting out'n'about, post-lockdown. An idea for you: I've been considering something similar, for the sake of birdwatching and perhaps some photography, too. What I've done with my old Saab estate (5'7" boot with seats folded down. I'm 6'3" but this is okay if lay diagonally) is to use a sun-screen for the windscreen, and for the other windows - I pushed some stiff paper into the window apertures to make a template, and used these to cut out some foam-board from Hobbycraft (£10 for four A1 sheets). The cards just push into place, held up with some white-tack. I still need to think about ventilation (I see, you used wind-deflectors in your van, one video says - a good idea). These cards also make great sun-blinds when I leave my car parked in the open in full sun-light. Saves the car's interior overheating and the seats fading!
👍👍

I usually prefer B & W, but in this case I feel the colour option looks much better - it adds the extra punch in the image with mist all around. Even the light feels more enhanced with colour adding its touch & feel to the whole image. Colour has added a punch :)
I honestly cannot say which I prefer. Both are quite different in their own way and both work beautifully. Sorry to sit on the fence but I like them both
B+W version is better for me.
Did you really have a 150 second exposure for the spider's web or was that a typo?
Great video. I have shot that spot in the lakes many a time.
Lol. Typo.
Was wandering the same, it didn't look like a 150 seconds exposure :-)
I usually prefer color images, but in this case, the B&W is my choice.
Same for me strangely enough
I have to go with the black and white image. I think that sheep adds so much to the composition, and breathes extra life into the scene
I love the separation that you were able to get with the black and white shot. The tree steps off of the page to me and really catches my attention. Great shot!!
Had no idea you sold the Van, would love to hear some background, why you’re switching and all that. Very much considering getting a van and convert it myself as well
That will all come once I get the new van 👍
From a woman's perspective, getting caught peeing in the bush is definitely worse. A pose with the right amount of contortion necessary to not pee on myself is way more embarrassing than talking into a camera!! :D
👍👍

Hahaha love this answer 🤣🙌
I am a huge B&W fan. I would personally choose the B&W; however both are amazing !!
You are my favorite person to watch Sat & Sun mornings :)
I prefer the B&W version. Not only for the mist which better defines the trees, but also for the single sheep that adds a key point of interest.
When you get your new camper I would like a tour of it.
Richard Briscoe Absolutely, I loved the tour of the last campervan!
👍👍

I prefer the colour version, its' softer and warmer, almost cosy feeling compared to the B&W image. Did you have a car full of condensation when you woke up as i's something I've wondered about trying myself, but think I may end up with a soggy car interior?
Yeah, it wasn't too bad. It soon dried out.
👍👍

These videos are so cozy and soothing for the soul. Thank you so much.
Tom, for the first time in my photographic years I have to say that BOTH images work for me. As much as I love a mono landscape image which in a majority of cases will ‘fix’ that colour scene that just isn’t working, your final image pays homage to both genres perfectly. The pastels in the colour image and the tones in the mono creating the layers and separation.
Sublime.
19:56 I think you meant the shutter speed is 1/50sec.
The Black and White one, but only because of the sheep.
Same, the sheep adds a touch of foreground interest that is lacking in the colour one.
Love the black and white - the tree in the color version - while dramatic with the mist - is not quite as separated as the tree in the black and white version. Well done.
I like both photos for different reasons. The color image has a pleasing painting sort of feeling to it. The black and white has an artistic photo quality I like. Thank you for sharing this experience.
Prefer the colour version - has more interest for me, personally.
I’d rather get caught having a pee as it is a more natural thing to do than filming a piece to camera!
Soft colored one for me. With the BnW white one, its kinda like what you would normally expect when you want separation. On the colored one the mist only softens the copse of trees itself and not the surrounding foreground and it gives it an ethereal and is a truly lucky turn of events.
again - Heaton + Canon Mark IV = poetry. Lovely.
I think getting caught having a "pee to camera" is infinitely worse : )
Ha, Theres no way my Ford Fiesta is as big as that Volvo and Ive slept in the Fiesta and you cant get the seat down as flat as your Luxurious camp ;)
I just filmed a video about my Fiesta micro-camper conversion which I will be releasing in a couple of weeks. At 5'5" I still have to sleep diagonally
Back in the 70s I had a Mini Minor van. I could take the two pins out that formed the hinge for the rear of the passenger seat and remove it, then I had a floor long enough to sleep on while away surfing weekends here on the east coast of Australia.
While living in the UK for some years in the 80s we (wife and son with me by then) had a Ford Escort van with a pop-up roof camper conversion. Folding the rear seat right down and clipping in a floor extension out the back made it long enough to sleep two, with out son (age from 5 to 9 through that time) slept in a roll-out stretcher up in the roof. It was a piece of steel pipe that clipped into sockets at each end and canvas between that and the side of the van. Somehow we managed to spend holidays all over the place in that van, and it had a little gas stove and sink built in there somewhere as well.
@@WilderhopeAdventures be sure to let me know when the film is going live

B&W easy. The separation you were talking about is soooo pronounced. Plus that sheep is mad cute 😂

I am drawn to the B&W image more. I think the contrast throughout really pulls me into the image and makes it feel dreamy and ethereal. Lovely photos and another great video. Thanks for sharing Thomas!
I've been recommending Thomas to my friends recently...his videos are so raw and real, they share his appreciation for the art of photography, the ups and downs...its unfiltered....we need more of this
The softer colour image for me anyday....a great end to your morning
The Black and White. Just a more enjoyable experience looking at it. Thank you for the most enjoyable hours in this covid period watching your videos.
Endless pleasure knowing that at the 11:00 point in the video he struggled to get in the car and close the boot...only to have to get straight back out again to fetch his camera 😂😂😂
I sleep in the car-I reckon its just fine. Beautiful drone footage and photography. Love the coloured photograph -beautiful.
you're right, the mist made all the difference! I like the bnw.
I prefer the soft, colour version of the last image. To me it looks like the perfect scene I'd like to see in a morning.
I prefer the color even though I simply love black and white photos. Your talk on the contrast and separation of the photo is a great analogy for life. It made me think of the experiences we have in life and how they can bring focus and clarity to the present moment through the mist of time. Top Thomas Heaton moment for me. 🥂
For me it’s the colour version. That may be because I’m not a fan of black and white images but the soft light on the colour really makes me feel that I was standing there when the shot was taken. Great work as always Thomas.
Both are awesome but definetively for me the winner is the black and white one that has something extra that draws my attention more than the softer with color. Great job! Keep it up!
I think I do prefer the soft colour image. I am a fan of black and white, but in this instance the softer contrast and subdued colours really work well.
That was definitely amazing luck having that late mist roll in!!
Definitely the softer color image. The way the light hits the tree and the overall surroundings makes more of an impact in the color image than the black and white.
I love B&W images but on this occasion the colour won it for me, just loved how the layers and separation was defined. It great when Mother Nature keeps you hanging on for that one brief moment
Stumbled over this video because I was on a campervan trip in Scotland back in October and thinking about sleeping in my Hyundai i30CW for 1-2 day phototrips. And what a surprise: my favourite Landscape-Photography-RUclipsr/Photographer has a video where he sleeps inside his Volvo 😂
Awesome video as usual ❤
Your videos make life look much better than it has any right to be.
I like the B&W. Monochrome is , for me, always the best.
Black and white does it for me just that bit of extra POP. Superb video 👍👍👍
Great work Tom and I love the black and white. There is more separation, and detail in the tree. The subject is clearer and I feel more drawn to it.
Not only like the B&W the best, BUT! it has the single centered sheep looking straight into the camera!!!!! How’s that for luck? And I think if you’re talking separation then you could not have wished for more, w/ the sheep up front and all the rest in steps back. Wow, love that. The colored version seems lonely by comparison. Great video Tom, thanks.
Black and white image at the end of the video is the best ❤️
I really like the B &W version. The sheep adds a bit of a secondary subject and I really like the lighting in the foreground more than the color. It looks like the foreground started coming into a bit of shade as you took the second shot for the color image. The B&W has wonderful contrasting bands that leads my eye from the white sheep in the dark foreground through the brightly light hole in the fence up to the contrasting main subject of the trees. Long story short, both images are wonderful but I really enjoy the light and contrast in the B&W
I like the color one. Such a soft palette and you did a great job retaining the true interaction between the light and subject in the color one as well.
The B&W version is my favourite and that sheep in the foreground in the shadow add some more interest to the image.
Color for me. I've never been to the Lake District but the image I sort of envision seems really close to what you shot there and rendered in color. Just makes me happy thinking about it. Thanks for what you do. We all enjoy it so very much.
I take my hat off to you for the amount of effort that you go to capture 3rd person footage of you going to your destination or at the site. The night shot with you walking with a torch was superb. I feel that it is one of the elements that differentiates you from the others.... and the reason that I keep myself subscribed and coming back to watch your vlogs when with others I eventually get bored and move on. Well done... and thank you. Your videographer/story telling skill continues to influence my own approach... with my kids memories videos. PS. This week I also got the bonus about the separation lesson... I’m a new photographer and that was a great insight
Great video, for me the soft colour.
Loved the image of the ghostly trees in the fog. Fantastic. Well done
