3 years ago-ish, you said one of the most profound statements I ever heard re: photography: "A magnificent view does not necessarily make a great image". This video reminded me of that quote - which, incidentally, completely changed my thinking when traveling and "seeing" things.
Couldn’t ask for anything more, these are always the best videos you do. You are by far my favourite youtuber and i don’t think there isn’t a video i don’t watch
Bought the calendar already. Love the fact that there aren't a million obnoxious ads in your videos, just nature and good photography (and squarespace, which isn't intrusive). If buying a calendar a year keeps it this way, I'm all for it.
I like how your content remains focused on photography and has not turned into ads about a particular brand. So refreshing. That being said, I think comments about how a piece of gear worked for you is valuable. The focus is still photography, Thanks Thomas.
This is the type of photo content i was looking for, not those behind the desk but with a backpack and mood inside it, trail and self confidence. Inspiring otherwords.
Thomas, I have been a fan of your videos for a long time but these newer extended hike adventure photo trips are by far my absolute favorites. Looking forward to seeing many more!
Well Mr Heaton, for a man of many words (!) , I must say that you have captured some truly magnificent images. The kind that vastly deserve to be printed VERY LARGE. In this time of quarantine, it was nice to see this for the first time - to have a bit of escapism, so thank you for that. .... NOTE: 1.5 servings is for the hiker who is doing the WHOLE PCT.... hiker hunger gets pretty serious by the time you get to Washington!!!! It would be easy to eat 2.5 servings of nice, warm eggs in the morning to start day 155 of a hike, trust me.....
Stunning location Thomas, beautifully edited video to 👍I really enjoy your extended hiking videos well worth missing your Sunday video for,That pano image you captured is stunning!!! Thanks for sharing your adventures with us all 👍
And absolutely beautiful photography Finally there is somebody that's actually taking professional photographs of the trails to see the beauty and show the beauty
Thomas, what an absolute treasure this series has been! It doesn't hurt that I was born and raised on both sides of the Cascades in Washington and hiked some of these same trails with my father and brothers. Such memories! We didn't have single serving spam though. had to carry the whole damn can. ;-) Didn't filter our water either. Just drank straight out of the creeks. Good old days, eh?
Thank you for that calm and beautiful video. Very much enjoy the longer videos. In a world that time flyes and everyone is running and gunning it is relaxing to watch you hiking and enjoying yourself.
these are the videos that remind me as to why i enjoy your channel the most. you were the first photographer i subbed too a while back, you're still number one in my eyes brother.
Idea for you to lighten your pack more: grab yourself a camping tarp, and spend a bit of time learning how to set it up well. The reason I mention it is because I’m in the military, and spent the better part of a week recently under a tarp and I had a great time. I was surprisingly comfortable, adjusting airflow was very easy, and I was able to accessorize and modify the shelter to meet whatever new requirements I wanted. For example, by the end, I had it set up so that one side would open up to vent out during the day, I had a clothesline running right over top of it, holding my pants and my shirt for when I got out of bed, and I had wooden toggles attached so that everything could be very quickly buttoned up and detached without having to tie or untie more knots. What you’ll need for this: a camping tarp A mosquito net Sleeping pad Sleeping bag, or blanket A ground sheet only if the forest floor really bothers you A bunch of paracord or other cordage. Ideally, the more you have, the better, especially while learning A big beastly camping knife for carving tent pegs and other woodworking projects (and cutting your cordage) You may also want a waterproof sleeping bag liner, but your new quilt seems like it should do. Camping like this is a good learning experience that will help you to be (and feel) more self-confident, builds your competency and will lighten your pack since you won’t have to haul a tent with you.
Agreed, I never once backpacked with a tent. A tarp with my hiking poles or staff was all I ever needed and consistently was drier with that set up than anyone around me in a tent. also if bugs bad a very small net can be hung from the center line of the tarp and fit over upper half of body outside the seeping bag or quilt. No mater how light weight the tent is, this tarp set up will save over half a kilo. maybe a full kilo. Less material, fewer stakes and no poles needed. Also is much more flexible in terms of where you can fit in a place to sleep.
You know why I loved this video more than your other hiking posts? Because it was 41 minutes....and I love listening to you talk. It's the accent ;) I always learn something when I watch a video of yours and I am eternally grateful. It was great to see you finally capture something I am familiar with, something I have seen with my own eyes. Glad you came to the states and are sharing your hiking experiences here! Thank you for all the knowledge and inspiration you give me :)
Just got back from a 2 month trip to Washington state, Mt Rainier stole my heart. Amazing area and decided to move there in a couple of months. Your video captures the essence of the wilderness in this area. Thank you for making it.
i have no problem waiting for a week or so to watch something beautiful as this.. fantastic .. feels like watching a wilderness movie or travel blog. keep going .. on words and upwards.
To be fair, the hike alone would be worth it without any photography. It surely won't feel like you are just hiking to get a shot. It's more like you experience something amazing and then get some fantastic opportunities for photographs which you don't get anywhere else. =)
Absolutely fantastic. Love this Thomas. Super inspirational. An example of what brought me to your channel. Amazing shots too, as always. Thank you. 👍👍👍👍
I truly miss these kind of videos Tom. It's a beautiful reminder why I started watching your videos in the first place. Thanks for sharing man. Really appreciate it.
As someone who’s a landscape and nature photographer and a backpacker this episode made me very happy. Thank you for it.🙂 I’m planning a thru hike of the Appalachian Trail in 2021 where countless photos will be taken.
Yes to wilderness adventures with an umbrella! I never go without one :-) Yay light weight sleeping bags! They are a back saver, and so cozy. Love feathered friends. So for my backcountry photo trips I take a Micro 4/3rds camera and 2 or 3 light lenses with an ultralight tripod designed for cell phones and light cameras. I am very interested in what you end up looking at!
"Looks like I've added too much water." Well, now you have TWO servings! So that must be how it's done :) Thoroughly enjoyed this nice long video Thomas - thank you for sharing this wonderful experience with us. Loved the colours in those last couple of shots. The pano was magnificent.
Watching this video while being stuck at home in HomeOffice. In my country you can't "wild camp" but it seems so amazing and frightening at the same time. Wish I could give it a shot with someone and just have an amazing weekend.
While i was watching your video the calendar got delivered. It's so beautiful. I love all of your videos and they motivated me several times to go out and shoot when i didn't want initially. Keep up the good work and i hope you keep your love for photography forever. Cheers
Your campout videos have always been my favorite. I was so excited to see your recent few in my State. Cheers, Washington is magical for outdoor enthusiasts and sightseers.
I love these last few videos, Thomas. Makes me want to leave work tomorrow and experience this for myself. Great combination of learning, inspiration and humor! Thanks!
Those clear sky crepuscular photos are too often ignored in favor of big vibrant clouds. But that hazy pink and orange sky with blue to black foreground layers is something I just can't pass on. Glad to see you recognize and execute that on this trip. Keep up the good work.
Just received your calendar in the mail and --- WOW!!! -- it is INCREDIBLE!! Thanks for making it -- I will enjoy and be inspired by it for all of 2020!!
40 minutes pass quickly when it is your video I'm watching. Canada has some nice trails too.Makes me want to experience them for myself. Thank you for sharing your experience.
Thomas: Pleased to know that you have spent some time in my part of the world, the Pacific Northwest. I was amused to see that your English heritage shows. Not many folks hiking in wilderness areas around here would be packing an umbrella! I'll pass on your comments re your tent to my son who is living and hiking in Norway. It looks like a great product.
Back in my adventure racing days I bought a Ptarmigan bag from Feathered Friends that likely saved my life in Alaska. So glad to hear they’re still doing well and that they took care of you.
My son’s doing the PCT for the second time and is in Northern Washington right now. That was a strange encounter. One of the best things about the PCT according to my son is the people you meet. Great video Tom. Kit weight is crucial. Well done
Hello Thomas.. have been watching you for quite some time, I'm an avid hiker .. nature lover! and nature and landscape photographer myself not quite to your level.. but love to see you in my part of the world and enjoying the BEAUTY OF THE PNW!!!!
Love watching your videos when I'm feeling kind of down. Its almost therapeutic and definitely inspirational.
Same here! Thank you Thomas.
Loved the "magically self-deploying tent" editing :)
I think those campers that made you feel unwelcome wanted to take drugs under the stars. They did you a favour because you'd have gotten no sleep. 😉
And this is why I bought your calendar. To keep you on the trail. I love your work!
you're a good man!
Thanks a lot, James. Without your support, I couldn't do this sort of thing 👍
Thomas Heaton- the man who listens to sights.
You are by far my favourite youtuber and i don’t think there isn’t a video i don’t watch
he was the first photographer i ever watched on RUclips, and he's still my favorite.
Do you guys know what’s soo special about this RUclips channel, it’s actual substance & adventure!
That's very kind, thank you.
Thomas Heaton Thanks for responding, made my day
Bought the calendar already. Love the fact that there aren't a million obnoxious ads in your videos, just nature and good photography (and squarespace, which isn't intrusive). If buying a calendar a year keeps it this way, I'm all for it.
“There’s always the odd one”, good view on life
I dont mind missing Sundays upload for this long upload today! Love your videos !
i concur!!!
Thanks a lot. I do enjoy making the longer videos. Maybe I will adopt this in the future 👍
I like how your content remains focused on photography and has not turned into ads about a particular brand. So refreshing. That being said, I think comments about how a piece of gear worked for you is valuable. The focus is still photography, Thanks Thomas.
Love these long videos. Gives you so much more of an in-depth look at landscape photography :)
I like your long videos, they are fantastic. Keep more of these coming.
One of my most magical evenings was spent on that section of the PCT. No photos but a memory I will always old in my soul.
beautiful!
What an amazing trip. Loving the longer format and the relaxed nature of it all. Now THIS is what I do landscape photography for.
I really enjoy these hiking photography videos Thomas, appreciate the effort you go to producing these.
Well Mr Heaton, for a man of many words (!) , I must say that you have captured some truly magnificent images. The kind that vastly deserve to be printed VERY LARGE. In this time of quarantine, it was nice to see this for the first time - to have a bit of escapism, so thank you for that.

Yes Thomas I will be watching this later on tonight
Have yourself a fantastic day
I'm watching it now myself. waited for a relaxing moment to enjoy.
You guys are awesome. Hope you enjoy the film.
And absolutely beautiful photography
Finally there is somebody that's actually taking professional photographs of the trails to see the beauty and show the beauty

Love these longer videos! Perfect excuse to sit and chill with a cuppa while the wee one has his nap 💕
C'est la vidéo au complet qui est une pièce de résistance! Bravo!
I have to say I thoroughly enjoy the way you depict setting up your tent 😀!
What, you mean my new Pop Up tent? 😂
Thank you for that calm and beautiful video. Very much enjoy the longer videos.
In a world that time flyes and everyone is running and gunning it is relaxing to watch you hiking and enjoying yourself.
You are so calming to watch. 41-minutes of relaxation.
I’ve been waiting for this feature length trek! Just going to brew up first ☕️
the SPAM can in a wrap was a 'lil off-putting haha
ill take one with cream and sugar please
these are the videos that remind me as to why i enjoy your channel the most. you were the first photographer i subbed too a while back, you're still number one in my eyes brother.

"It's raining, it's (BOOGIE)." Welcome to the Cascades! Glad you made the trek!
My Spooon! My.... Precious 😀
It's gonna be another day of sun and shameless blue. (Mark Knopfler) I do like that last pano of Rainier, clear sky notwithstanding!
You know why I loved this video more than your other hiking posts? Because it was 41 minutes....and I love listening to you talk. "You're not camping here are you?" - Translation: We are busy doing sex and drugs in the wilderness. ;)
Love the mountains, hiking and photography. This had it all! TY!
You will love having a camping quilt. I love mine. It is so much more comfortable and versatile than a sleeping bag.
Fantastic hike, scenery and photography. That’s what it’s all about 👍🏻
Blue, blue, blue sky...time for a little astrophotography?
Ha, no chance. Not after so many miles. Sleep is what is needed, not astro 😴
Thomas Heaton Ah, yeah...kind of forgot about the miles of hiking 😴
his lens isn't fast enough for astro, he neads at least f2.8
@@RoGameReview The lens he used is f2.8.
Eastern Traveller im sorry for asking this but, why do we need at least f2.8 for Astrophotography? I never done one and i tried to in the future
Just got back from a 2 month trip to Washington state, Mt Rainier stole my heart. Amazing area and decided to move there in a couple of months. Your video captures the essence of the wilderness in this area. Thank you for making it.
A wonderful adventure. A great follow up to receiving your calendar.
Thanks for a wonderful video. I must have missed this. Really enjoyable and interesting and lovely images.
i have no problem waiting for a week or so to watch something beautiful as this.. fantastic .. feels like watching a wilderness movie or travel blog. keep going .. on words and upwards.
I love so much your choice for taking photo in blue hour and golden hour
I Have to admire you Thomas for the amount of hiking you do for single shot, absolutely brilliant 👍🏽
To be fair, the hike alone would be worth it without any photography. It surely won't feel like you are just hiking to get a shot. It's more like you experience something amazing and then get some fantastic opportunities for photographs which you don't get anywhere else. =)
Nah, there's not much else to do out there 🖐️
Absolutely fantastic.

I’m planning a thru hike of the Appalachian Trail in 2021 where countless photos will be taken.
These are for sure your best videos and totally your best.
One of my favorite of your videos this year ...
i love how real you are. it's a genuine, nice quality to have. you're great. love your videos. thank you for them.
Yes to wilderness adventures with an umbrella! I never go without one :-)
Yay light weight sleeping bags! They are a back saver, and so cozy. Love feathered friends.
So for my backcountry photo trips I take a Micro 4/3rds camera and 2 or 3 light lenses with an ultralight tripod designed for cell phones and light cameras. I am very interested in what you end up looking at!
This is awesome especially now. Traveling without stepping out. Good photos n explanations.
Thomas' video is here, where is my cup of coffee ?!
Hey my kids !, I don't want to hear any voice!!.
where is my headphone ? 😂
So cool to see you in my home state. Mt Rainer is so beautiful. Glad you could see the Beautiful state of Washington!
I'm commenting I haven't even watched this yet and I'm super excited and guarantee it will be awesome.
"Looks like I've added too much water." Well, now you have TWO servings! So that must be how it's done :) Thoroughly enjoyed this nice long video Thomas - thank you for sharing this wonderful experience with us. Loved the colours in those last couple of shots. The pano was magnificent.
How well I know that lost-spoon-replaced-by-bit-of-card feeling.
Watching this video while being stuck at home in HomeOffice.
In my country you can't "wild camp" but it seems so amazing and frightening at the same time. Wish I could give it a shot with someone and just have an amazing weekend.
Thanks for taking us on a trip with you !
Beautiful nature and beautiful photos. bravo Thomas.
While i was watching your video the calendar got delivered. It's so beautiful.
I love all of your videos and they motivated me several times to go out and shoot when i didn't want initially.
Keep up the good work and i hope you keep your love for photography forever.

Tom. A true inspiration you are. Thanks for the fun!
Really enjoying the longer videos seeingbtge hikes.
Your campout videos have always been my favorite. I was so excited to see your recent few in my State. Cheers, Washington is magical for outdoor enthusiasts and sightseers.
And that’s why I live in the PNW. Thoroughly enjoyed this series Thomas! Well done.
John Sholian It’s pretty fun seeing Thomas wander in our neck of the woods. Not sure how i feel about others learning about our natural wonders. :-)
It is cool too see him explore in our neck of the woods. He needs to come back and catch the coast sometime.
Really like the silhouette shot, looked like a family of trees watching the sunset :)
That first image is beautiful, I love the blues.
Thanks for this long video Thomas! I really enjoyed it!
I love the fact that you do not over edit your photos Thomas! Thoroughly enjoy your content sir. Keep it coming!!!
I love these last few videos, Thomas. Makes me want to leave work tomorrow and experience this for myself. Great combination of learning, inspiration and humor! Thanks!
Loved this extended video every bit as much as the last. Nice images too.
loving the back to basics kind of feel of the channel now Thomas
"Listening to the sights.." That's an interesting one! Sorry! There's always one smartarse and it's usually me! LOL
hahaha
What a great wilderness hike and vlogg.
another really nice video, educational and the outdoors too. Inspirational
Just found your channel and it’s quickly become one of my favourites.
confirmed Thomas Heaton set fire to the states for good looking haze
Finally some old style Thomas Heaton video! That last Pano is amazing! Great video!(almost half a movie in length)
Fabulous stuff Thomas. This is what you do best.
That would be a dream journey, Mexico to Canada along the Pacific coast. Superb video yet again Thomas.
Great job! I'm about to spend Thur-Sat hiking and shooting. Can't wait. This got me in the right frame of mind.
Another great video Thomas. Excellent work.
Those clear sky crepuscular photos are too often ignored in favor of big vibrant clouds. But that hazy pink and orange sky with blue to black foreground layers is something I just can't pass on. Glad to see you recognize and execute that on this trip. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for bringing us along!
Those bag filters are by far the best option. I'm loving those gob held gropro clips. I need to do some of that.
Just awesome hike and photos... amazing trip video
Next time you are in Washington, I can show some amazing amazing places!!
Ton of great compositions along that stretch of trail! Great episode! Come back to Washington when this bug is gone!
Just received your calendar in the mail and --- WOW!!! -- it is INCREDIBLE!! Thanks for making it -- I will enjoy and be inspired by it for all of 2020!!
Glad it arrived safely.

So enjoyed you vlog Thomas. The pano, to me is the best. You realy are the master of panos’s. Thank you Squarespace!!!
