I tried out a camping quilt for the first time last weekend, up in Snowdonia. Without a doubt the worst bit of equipment I have ever paid for, and I've bought some stinkers! Freezing cold air creeping in all around the sides, no thanks, back to my mummy bag.
@@TheCarmacon I use the Thermarest X-Therm (R value of 6.0), which is excellent but does have horizontal baffles. I have flogged my quilt on eBay now, I'm very happy with the cold weather sleeping system I have and will not be going back!
I'm glad you didn't mention pack weight, because it's a bit of an obsession & I used to be obsessed myself, until I realised I can tailor my walks (to camp) according to weight. Long hikes in summer. Short hikes in winter, when we carry more gear. Sorted.
Hey Paul. It's so refreshing to see a RUclipsr not care about weight. The obsession over a few grams we see with so many is getting ridiculous and rather boring now.
@@markcooke5270 Absolutely spot on buddy. I watched a video yesterday and they mentioned taking a small elasticated strap off their blow up pillow to save weight. It's laughable.
suggestion for your sleeping mat, stack it flat and put against the back, usually easier to ram other stuff in front instead of around it. I can suggest the Nemo Tensor Insulate which is around 500g for the regular and 675g for the biggest wide-long version and packs quite a bit smaller (3.5 R Value). I Slept comfortably on that till -1 c. Otherwise tensor alpine is at 4.8 R-value for super cold nights.
Great video Paul, you’ve been busy since I met you in Whitby yesterday! A pleasure to meet you and love your videos. I use a Sigg aluminium bottle as a hot water bottle, boil up the kettle and put the Sigg in a dry walking sock! Although usually I’m motorcycle camping so the weight/bulk isn’t often an issue. Look forward to your next video.
I usually struggle to get all my gear in my pack but it does go in. The only thing I can think of after this is my tent is too big and I use a camelbak for drinking water which might be a bit inefficient space wise. Really useful for me personally, nice to see what I take isn't too far removed from whats carried here.
I find that my sea to summit ultralight pillow folds nicely in with whatever sleeping pad I use. Free comfort without the space penalty and ready to go when I get to camp!
Spot on Paul. I feel the same. Take what I want and what I'm prepared to carry. 16kg the other night but I absolutely didn't care as I covered all eventualities and was comfortable 😊
Have you heard of the concept of weight distribution packing? It’s where you pack the heaviest things in the middle of your pack so it aligns with your own bodies Center of gravity? So when you’re hiking, the weight being even with your own centre makes for a more comfortable hike. I’ve done a lot of portaging and backcountry and I’ve found it useful.
I use the Osprey Exos 48. I put my tent in a stuff bag and put it with my waterproofs in the kangeroo pouch on the outside of the bag.I put my sleeping bag into a stuff sack loosely and clothes into another stuff sack. I have a large stuff sack to put all my gear into. I use the Sea To Summit Comfort Plus Insulated Sleeping Mat, it's double sided, it's like having two mats, so if you get a leak you can still use it.
For me a v helpful video because it establishes that its possible to get a full winter load into a relatively small pack and the practiced techniques for how to do it. However I am troubled that I can not put this into practice for my benefit. Firstly I feel that stated pack sizes are not consistent or fair. You can see in the video that the Gregory is a medium size but it is only declared to be a 58l pack. But I have just tried on the osprey kestrel 68l and felt it was visibly too small for a two day camp and strangely smaller capacity than the osprey aether 65l. Looking at the video I would guess the kestrel is only a 58l pack.
Amazing how that lot disappeared into that bag! I like the idea of the big dry bag to stuff the fluffy things into - I've tended to use the individual carry bags / stuff sacks for things like sleeping bags and jackets but they are just so bulky that you end up with items hanging on the outside of the rucksack which is not ideal. Great video Paul!

I've read multiple reports the X-therm is noisy, that alone pushed me away from it when choosing recently. I contemplated the Nemo Tensor insulated and Alpine versions but ended up settling on the Sea to Summit Ether Light XT Insulated Air Mat (Large). Yes the R-Value of this pad is only 3.2 (-5c), however, the reality is how often are most of us (based in the UK) going lower than this - Answer; very rarely. For the times I am, I decided I can either double up (stacking r-value) with something like the Thermarest Z-Lite, or, take a heavier winter ground pad with a higher r-value. That additional 400g of a Z-Lite (etc) on those very rare occasions wouldn't be such a big deal. Cheers for all the content Paul, wicked to have seen your channel grow over the years.

I was saying the same thing to myself , the pack is so stuffed and compress it must be impossible to access something in the bag without cursing 😅 . But I did too leave a thumb's up for the effort 👍
I have to agree, this goes against everything I've ever practiced. Yes,it all goes in, but do you really want to drag out lots of kit in the peeing rain, possibly soaking it (down bag, down jacket, etc) to get to something tucked away near the bottom. For me, it has to be bag it, and tag it: a small series of waterproof coloured bags which can be easily identified and sorted whether in the rain, snow or even in the dark. Hi another excellent video Paul. I wondered may I ask what radio 📻 you take on your camps please. I am going to buy one but if you someone who got one always ask lol 😆
Went on a hiking holiday past October and one week before we took off I did the same thing. Spreading out all my gear and toys for what was supposed to fit into my backpack. Tbh, I did shit my pants looking at everything . But to my surprise it all went nicely into my Osprey Levity60 including plenty of food worth for one week. Including 3L water the whole lot was just under 15kg 😅
I practise packed all my winter kit into my Osprey Atmos 50 AG and glad I did a lot of similar things so that's made me feel pleased. Still had some room also. Brilliant video as always Paul straight to the point and still learnt a few things. Bang on 👏🏻👍🏻 Take care mate... Chris ✌🏼 🏕🏕

Hi Paul, great video! I was wondering if you've done a video talking about walking poles as there's so many out there and some really expensive ones, I would love to hear your opinion on different walking poles please! Thanks! I've subscribed and liked :)
People don’t appreciate how small you can pack a Soulo when you separate the pegs and poles from the tent.. it may weigh 2.4kgs but it packs smaller than most of my 2 man tents
Hi Paul. I have the Hilleberg Soulo tent also. Hilleberg recommend you don't compress the tent due to possible damage to the zips, I find this a real negative when space is an issue. I notice you have compressed yours, so what are your thought on this? Also thanks for another great video. 👍

I forgot about hotukdeals! Love it.
That's a great bit of packing. Cramming in is the way to go even if loading a sleeping bag into its squash bag. The rucksac looks well thought out. Worth paying for quality if you're serious. Never head of hotukdeals before so I'll look them up. Thanks for a useful video!
Hi Paul, I have the x-therm regular, and whilst I am not able to directly compare it with yours, it would appear to pack down to half the diameter. That said, I use my eitherlite XT more often.
Fair play getting all that kit in ur bag and carrying it 2 👍
Think that's fantastic how you get that all in.
I've just bought an Osprey Zenith 105 litre as i was starting to struggle to get all my kit in my old trusty 65 litre from Tesco.
Yet to try it on the hill but I'm hoping i don't fill it too much 😂😂😂
Hi Paul, brilliant video as normal.just a question where did the thermal blanket/mat come from please as this is exactly what I'm after.thanks.
Very impressive packing 👏
Hi Paul, great video!
I was wondering if you've done a video talking about walking poles as there's so many out there and some really expensive ones, I would love to hear your opinion on different walking poles please!
Thanks! I've subscribed and liked :)
People don’t appreciate how small you can pack a Soulo when you separate the pegs and poles from the tent.. it may weigh 2.4kgs but it packs smaller than most of my 2 man tents
Can you please come and pack my backpack!!! OMG 😧 😧 AMAZING!!!! Well done!!! 👍 👏
Hi Paul. I have the Hilleberg Soulo tent also. Hilleberg recommend you don't compress the tent due to possible damage to the zips, I find this a real negative when space is an issue. I notice you have compressed yours, so what are your thought on this?
Also thanks for another great video. 👍
QUestion for you Paul, when you camp in the rain. When you pitch the tent, how do you then get in the ten without the inside of the tent getting wet?
I’d like to see how you fit the Scarp in, I find the end poles mean you can’t squash it down like my other tents
Awesome mate
Good one, very helpful.
I have a garage sale 70 liter pack and fit a whole lot less in it than what you did just now. I need to up my game.
