Watching videos like this gives me a whole new appreciation of cars: the complexity involved in designing and assembling/maintaining them versus the simplicity of driving them. Those people are smarter than me by orders of magnitude.
Sorry to be a downer but there's no way for metal from under the piston to get into the combustion chamber without causing massive damage to bore, piston and rings... that metal must have come from valve guide because that's the only thing with access to top of combustion chamber and clean oil... unless there's no relation between bits of metal in the sump and combustion chamber in which case potentially a failed spark plug or debris coming in through the inlet manifold from something... internal casting or inlet manifold perhaps?
Small independent garages are the lifeblood of owning cars like this. I had a 166V6 for 6 years and was fortunate to have an independent Alfa specialist close to where I lived. Not sure I would have had it so long if I hadn’t had their expertise on hand. Nothing major went wrong on it, but I could rely on them to keep it in tip top condition. Still miss that car 10 years after I sold it.
I changed the gear box on my 156 GTA with the engine remaining in the car by loosening the sub frame and dropping it out the bottom whilst on axel stands. I envy your car lift and fork lift Undoing the bottom starter motor bolt was pure and utter torture. Great video. 👍👍👍
I changed the clutch on my 2.5 156, i can only agree about that starter bolt! I could never get at the oil filter either.....I paid an expert to do my cambelt, no bloody space there either!
So, given your comment about excess sealant on the sump, is it possible somone has already been in there and the metal was left from a previous failure not properly cleaned out ?
@@ItaliaAutos Ugh, I just hate it when someone else has already been meddling with things and not put things back right or left traces/created more work 🙄
Hi, I'm in Australia I want to ask you something, my 147 GTA has Gunk in the surface of the expansion tank just on the corner where the main hose comes in, the coolant is clean, car runs beautifully no overheating, no oil consumption and doesn't use up any coolant, my mechanic who is one of the best indi in Sydney says to leave it and he'll clean the tank on my next service and see how long it takes for the it to come back, he says they all do it and if it gets worse probably have to have to do the head gasket, as it could have a small seepage, car doesn't get used a lot its more of a weekender, have you come across anything similar? Want to get some more feedback, maybe you can do a video on the subject. Cheers.
Is the piece stuck to the head a collett piece thats broke off and dropped down out of the valve guide? (Sorry for my ignorance but not sure if these engines have them) Unless somebody has dropped something into the spark plug hole and not realised......I cant think how else a piece like that can find another way into the chamber.......great video. Certainly putting in the wrench time on this.
Think its to large to be a collet if it was id imagine compression would of been down on that cylinder. I think something was dropped in when the last garage did the cambelt change shortly after we had an engine knock
That is a VERY nice car. As beautiful as they get, and that engine sounds sweet. It's a true beast to drive, absolutely hilarious. But....it must surely be the only Alfa ever born with poor handling. They say to there is no such thing as too much power..... 😁 Definitely a car bringing a huge grin on your face !
@@ItaliaAutos I hope you can sneek a ride in it when it's done. It's unforgettable. But be careful, it won't drive in a straight line when you put your foot down 😁
Could you have just taken the sump off in situ without taking the engine out to see the potential damage to bottom end? or as you would need to take the engine out to repair anyway, was it best to inspect with engine out? Great video as usual! Also looking forward to the punto gt update
Italia Autos okay but it will fit? My dad and I want to do that to a 1.6 147 FL because its gonna be our project ca. Will be our first ever project tho, what would we need?
Big thanks to all Alfa mechanics who keep these wonderful cars on the road.

Marvellous to see an expert showing his expertise !

Really interesting video. Thanks Neil.
My pleasure!

Great video.
👍👍👍
pretty used to removing these engines now.

This is exactly why I bring my car to you mate.. Skills
nice.
Great video again, very intriguing,my money is on someone having dropped something in the engine prior to you seeing it.
Looks like it doesn't it. Thanks
Sempre ottimi video, complimenti anche per le varie spiegazioni durante i lavori, grazie per condividere la tua esperienza 👍
thanks for watching.
Curious to know what happens. Keep it up Neil! Thanks. ;)
Going to be a bit of a gap on this one now until I get engine back and rebuild it.
Enjoying seeing how this project is going. Great video 😁👍
More to come!
Great video Neil, I enjoyed it. I wish I had so much space to work and especially a car ramp haha. Top work 👍🏼
yeah saw your little garage for the gearbox on your gtv. glad my days of doing that are long gone.
Italia Autos haha I bet! Thanks for your videos BTW they help me out no end
The same reason why I bought a 24mm ratchet spanner... Just that single bolt! :D Nice Job!
Good choice!
You make it look so easy. Really interesting.
Thank you! Cheers!
So, given your comment about excess sealant on the sump, is it possible somone has already been in there and the metal was left from a previous failure not properly cleaned out ?
highly possible. something is a bit funky about it.
@@ItaliaAutos Ugh, I just hate it when someone else has already been meddling with things and not put things back right or left traces/created more work 🙄
Thank you 👍
I think that shard is from a valve stem . I have the same issue with my 75
Fantastic stuff, hope the Punto Gt work is going alright too..
Not touching that until the gta is finished.
@@ItaliaAutos Cheers Neil, great video watching with interest..

The diagnosis will be interesting. May never know exactly what that foreign body is then......
Never watched this bloke b4 , ....... knows his stuff , I like Alfas too, think I'll sub
Thanks.
hello
please i would like to see the liners you're talking about not to lift with the head
thanks
So what did the engine dude say? Maybe it was a piece of spark plug?
Hello thanks for the video. Could I ask if the 3.2 or a 3.0l be swapped into a 2.0 selespeed?
Personally not with the effort
Really interesting thank you 🤔
Glad you enjoyed it
I wish i afford to buy this engine
how did that metal part end up in the cilinderhead is what i'd like to know!
same here.
How much would it be to put the V6 engine into a GTV or a GT
Neil, do we get to meet the “Engine Guy”??
Prob not.

Don't forget to clean the oil channels to the hydraulic tappets! And unfortunately, many new hydraulic tappets are sold defective...
Its all being remanufactured so it will all be done for me.

due to the knock there was not point just removing the sump. id rather just do it with engine out and get it sorted.
Hi Nell good Job thats have a 2.0 the 3.2 Busso is pig to work on 😁😑
thanks
Its for us Alfa romeo youmens.
top job!
Thank you! Cheers!
Where are you based ? I’ve been looking at the GT model V6 but they are hard to find with low milage
Walsall West Midlands. There will some out there
That's a really odd one I especially find puzzling where that shard of metal in the head could have come from makes no sense hope it all gets sorted !
Yeah its all a big puzzle. Hope to find all of the peices and get it running like new soon.
What oil would you use in a late Busso? I have a Alfa 75 with a 1996 3.0 24V engine.
Any 10W60, if you are on the track make sure the oil is Ester based
Nice
Thanks
pls make a vid..howe to cang timing belt of thr 156 2.0 twin sp pls
Already have
Selespeed gear?
Great video. So in real time, how long does it take to remove the engine?
If nothing is seized about 3-4 hours. But it can vary
I have a 159. Is it posible to swap the 2.2.jts for a 3.2gta ? and the dream : put a maserati v8 in it?
lol. no
Hi Neil hope you are well any news on the 147 GTA.
Still waiting on engine to come back.
@@ItaliaAutos thanks for the reply looking forward to seeing it come back. I am seriously considering one as my next car.
Is there a follow up video?
It’s being filmed right now.
8:54 - Fiat Barchetta detected =)
yes done a series of videos on it.
Could that piece stuck in the head be a spark plug tip that broke off?
to big for that, but good idea.
valve guide failure
possible. will see once the valves get taken out
What was the outcome?
Hopefully another update before the new year.
yo man, is it possible to do a 3.0 v6 busso swap into an 147 facelift?
If you have enough money parts and knowhow.
Italia Autos okay but it will fit? My dad and I want to do that to a 1.6 147 FL because its gonna be our project ca. Will be our first ever project tho, what would we need?
Be careful, the ecu is the weakest link.
So where on earth did that large piece of shard metal imbedded in the cylinder come from then? Weird.
Yeah its all very weird.
156 selespeed sorry
