A couple months down the line, the engine is starting to grow on me a little, but that gearbox….it’s so notchy and the throw is so long, it takes so much from the experience
I get it. It's a cliche, but Alfas have that special Italian spirit. As a friend of mine said, they make a car dance, not merely accelerate, turn and stop. And they understand aesthetics: the Italians have this view that it's just as important that something be beautiful as functional, if not more. Isn't that sort of what life's about? It's kind of the automotive equivalent of economics or art and poetry. The former is about how we live, the latter is about why we live.
It’s now 2019. A well maintained 147 (btw you can easily fix in a Q2 differential) is worth considerably more than the Golf or the Ford. Easily EUR 12‘000 for a good one. So much to loosing value...
The RS is like a trackcar for the road, its horrible to drive. Cruisign on the highway in the RS is a disaster. Every little crack on the road pulls you to the sides. The Alfa is build for the road, and is softer and comfy to ride.. and it have a GREAT engine sound as well. I would rather have the VW, but the Alfa is still a more usable car than the RS
I'd also get the Alfa. VW hasn't changed the look of the gold since the 90s, and they still look too boxy in my opinion. I wouldn't mind the ford either, but the Alfa just looks unique.
Surely you could get a decent after market LSD for it? I don't know how Alfa ever thought 250bhp and fwd without one was a good idea. That engine though, what a stunner!
Alfa went even further, introducing a 3.7V6 328 bhp version later that year, as for Autodelta, they've managed to improve that already insane performance upto 422 bhp.
Razor Ramon, how can Clarkson complain about wheel wobble after he has wrecked the tyres burning it around the track like that? At least the car tells the driver he has wrecked the tyres!
It's funny that it should have been under 11,000 pounds in three years based on what Jeremy said but this thing is still around 10,000 pounds 17 years later
Hehe, mine does that too, and it's only an 80bhp ford fusion :). Seems to be the eco-friendly rubber ford uses for the tyres. I can even lock all four wheels under heavy braking (the ABS doesn't work) and it doesn't even leave skidmarks! Regarding slicks, they're much worse in the rain because the grooves in normal tyres push the water away from underneath the tyre whereas with slicks the water just stays there & separates the rubber from the road so you get less grip.
Geremy says the interior of the alfa will fall apart but 15 years latter every piece of plastic of any golf IV and V had melted down by now and there are parasite noises everywhere on that car.
still love my 147 :p its a blackline not a GTa but still kinda the same as it has no locking diffs etc. :) but i have to say i have it now for 3 years and still no errors to report, its just such a good car, it feels diffirent then other cars :)
Mine has a 1.4 litre duratec petrol engine. Dual overhead cam, four valves per cylinder, and the book says 80bhp (60kW) at 5700rpm. The logbook says it was manufactured in 2005. The tyres are Goodyear (or maybe michelin, can't remember) with the word "eco" in the name. I bought it second hand so I don't know exactly how long they've been on the car, or even whether they're the stock tyres hehe :)
Hand stitched just means the seats is going to disintegrate. Anyway, is a Alfa romeo really so bad, as they say? i heard that a German boss, obsessed with quality, lead the development of the 159. i never actually driven a Alfa, but the prices for a 159 1,9 diesel seems reasonable enough, to try them out. and i havn't heard anything about them having engines replaced, not any of the 1,9 diesels anyway.
Everyone complaining about the audio issues. It's not BBC's fault, RUclips converts the audio to one channel-sound, so everything gets messed up. At least someone said that on another Top Gear video, and it kinda makes sense. If you wanna watch Top Gear for real, do like every sane person would, and download it with Torrents :P

93000 in 15 years. Even if that's miles (160000 km) i assume you just drive it and from your mechanic. My Ford Falcon is 13 years old and has 347000 km on it (215000 miles).
R.I.P Top gear and the Grand Tour. Umm... 2019 anyone?
They have specials still.
@@hendo337 :(
Is nobody going to make a GTA joke? Ugh.. fine.
Rockstar should skip all the Ferraris, Lamborghinis and Corvettes and just get Alfa Romeo in their game.
Lol
Beta Juliet or Julietta
Mikael Soltaniha if rockstar actually added this car, would they legally be allowed to call it the 147 GTA? 0_o
It would probably be called a crazy name in italian or latin.. CERBERUS, I could imagine :D
Mikael Soltaniha GTA means Gran Turismo Alleggerita (with less weight)
2019 and dang the 147 still looks good. The other two... not so much.
Love my 147 (and my GTV). Only 2.0 TS but still so much fun. Surprises me more and more.
Twin spark motor is a classic!
i bet it fell apart a few weeks later
@@notfound3358 Nope,its a strong motor if u care for it-I have AR 147 with 2.0Ts :D
@@-chytrus-4474does yours leak like crazy from the valve cover? 🤣. I got a 147 2.0TS a couple months ago. At first, I wasn’t really convinced, but then again, the car was dirt cheap. A couple months down the line, the engine is starting to grow on me a little, but that gearbox….it’s so notchy and the throw is so long, it takes so much from the experience
@@MrPrajitura a little wet but not that bad, about the gearbox maybe something is bad?
I want both the R32 and the GTA. They both have nice sounding engines.
Davide Cironi's Drive Experience brought me here
Midnight Club II OST huh? Nice.
I reckon the terrible sound is deliberate in order to push you to shell out for the DVDs
I would love to have a GTA. When you put an LSD in them, they are absolutely perfect.
Not bothered much about the Focus, but the Golf and the 147 seriously captured my heart. Cannot decide which one to take between the two.
jokes on them while those r32 and focusRs is probably already been scrapped for making soda cans, Alfa gained collector car status.
@@razorr_o That was Autodelta, all of theirs 156/147 came with LSD
1:00 what's that music called?
ruclips.net/video/NQqcyDOwsEs/видео.html
It's funny that it should have been under 11,000 pounds in three years based on what Jeremy said but this thing is still around 10,000 pounds 17 years later
Apologies if this has already been discussed, but with a LSD, what's the educated guess in closing up the 3 second gap to the Focus?
future classic. a mint one is worth nearly 20 grand now
Great great car. A legend at this stage. And in a few years worth more than new too. All time classic.
Deft Audio Editor strikes again.
Late 2020 and The 147 still Banging
true, true
im going out to hug my italian beauty
Hehe, mine does that too, and it's only an 80bhp ford fusion :). Seems to be the eco-friendly rubber ford uses for the tyres. I can even lock all four wheels under heavy braking (the ABS doesn't work) and it doesn't even leave skidmarks! Regarding slicks, they're much worse in the rain because the grooves in normal tyres push the water away from underneath the tyre whereas with slicks the water just stays there & separates the rubber from the road so you get less grip.
innamorato della 147 grande alfa....
e l'ho comprata dopo questo video ma non gta per colpa dello stato
@@turic95 io l ho comprata 3 anni fa ' ma e una 150 cv m blu elettrico molto bella
@@mikmich4721 fatto bene
Geremy says the interior of the alfa will fall apart but 15 years latter every piece of plastic of any golf IV and V had melted down by now and there are parasite noises everywhere on that car.
2019 still a great car
still love my 147 :p its a blackline not a GTa but still kinda the same as it has no locking diffs etc. :) but i have to say i have it now for 3 years and still no errors to report, its just such a good car, it feels diffirent then other cars :)
Got it wrong with the Alfa’s depreciation
Somehow he was wrong! Today it costs way more compared to mk1 RS& Mk4 R32 Golf! And its a nicer place to be in!That interior is absolutely fantastic!
I couldn't hear anything because of the music
It's still hot in 2019 ;)
Mine has a 1.4 litre duratec petrol engine.
Funny how he mentioned the depreciation but they're no worth more than they were brand new lol.
Really? You couldn't pay me to own one.
now they're worth up to 16k in Italy
Hand stitched just means the seats is going to disintegrate.
Anyway, is a Alfa romeo really so bad, as they say? i heard that a German boss, obsessed with quality, lead the development of the 159. i never actually driven a Alfa, but the prices for a 159 1,9 diesel seems reasonable enough, to try them out. and i havn't heard anything about them having engines replaced, not any of the 1,9 diesels anyway.
***** So basicly, a alfa is kinda like.. choosing between style and comfort or comfort and reliability!
They're not that bad, I've owned three.
Just make sure you buy one that's been well cared-for.
JTD/Multijet engines are bullet proof
If only Clarkson would have punched the sound producer
As a Focus owner I'd rather have the Alfa too
When a 147 GTA now costs £10k... Oof
Alfa 147 is, unarguably, the best looking hatchback in history (especially the 2006 version).
Change my mind.
look today at alfa and look to anothers!!! lol
What?
Does Christopher nolan make the sound mixing? Couldn't understand a word.
I can't hear a damn thing he's sayin
What is it with early 2000's tv audio ? the WRC youtube channel has also a problem with sound mixing in their season reviews
Ford Focus to go on a track
Alfa for daily life
VW Golf piece of shit
nou790 someone’s having a tantrum, golf is more than you can afford haha
Everyone complaining about the audio issues. It's not BBC's fault, RUclips converts the audio to one channel-sound, so everything gets messed up. At least someone said that on another Top Gear video, and it kinda makes sense. If you wanna watch Top Gear for real, do like every sane person would, and download it with Torrents :P
VW Biggest SHIT - Alfa Romeo Is THE BEST! ;-)
what have you been smoking, because i want some.
+Based
You?
Alfa is shit
Ahah sto alfista
Ah that sound of the car's exhaust falling off while you look over the stuck-open window
Alfa 147 is still one of the most selled in Italy, even Police used in its early years. It is a crazy car for crazy drivers. Just like an italian woman, Alfa 147 requires a proper italian attitude be handled...
focus rs is the best.
SimpleStyle the Ford is a economic and shit american car without emotionals. Alfaromeo is sinphony of italian art sportcar. Focus? No thanks...
I agree the Focus is brilliant
focus rs is the *fastest
change the diff and put some anti-roll bars if you decide to buy one and i'm saying this because one of my friends had one (with a new diff and anti roll bars).
This is what I Like so much about Clarkson. I totally agree with him in his choice of cars now looking back in my old age the Only real classic cars I love are British n Italian cars with the exception of the golf n Peugeot 205 GTIs n of course the AC Cobra, who doesn't Love a Healey 3000 an MGA or a classic Lancia n an Alfa maybe a fiat 124 coupe?
